Thanks to huge publicity by Channel 7 that airs Betty here in Australia, Betty beats all the competition last night, taking in 2.03 million viewers, and peaking at 2.13 million. Very impressive. The premiere more than matches the combined audiences of Nine and Ten in all audiences (Betty doubles 60 Minutes and hammers Loser).

does it seem odd that they left it on against survivor premiere and then gave me no new eps forEVER? Maybe they know i do not watch the first few eps of survivor-- too many people. I appreciate ramping up my Hetty interest, but I am not sure I will remember being interested in this long into March.

There is light at the end of the repeat tunnel! According to ABC Medianet, there will be a new episode on March 15! Hooray!! :)
That's still 23 days away, which is 21 days too long in my book, but I'll take what I can get. At least it's not mid-April as Wikipedia has been reporting.

Anyone besides me a lil upset that this is on the same time as American Idol? I will def watch UB but I wish I could watch both, I am very surprised they would put AI against another ratings powerhouse.

Someone who's more familiar with American Idol than I am, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't AI go down to two shows a week (Tues and Wed) after awhile? Maybe the reason that there's such a long hiatus for UB is that ABC is waiting until there's no more AI on Thursdays to have new UB episodes.

UB is on hiatus? I thought there was a new episode tonight. You are absolutely correct about AI scheduling, which would make the UB hiatus make sense. HOw long is it on hiatus?

Nope, tonight at 8 pm is a repeat of last week's Grey's Anatomy. Then UB is repeats March 1 and 8, with the next new episode March 15.

This isn't the only show opting not to fight the ratings giant that is American Idol. Supernatural (Thursdays at 9:00 eastern) isn't showing a new episode again until March 15 either. While I'm going to be having serious withdrawals from both shows, I get why they're doing it.

Feb 22, 2007 @ 9:40 pm
It's also natural for them to take a break after February sweeps. March is notorious showing repeats, at the time because no one wanted to compete with March madness. With timeshift and Tivo, however, that's less of an issue, but old habits die hard. Plus, we started earlier than everyone else and we've already burned through 16 episodes, so they have to spread the last 6 episodes over the March, April and May.

I agree with you, but probably for different reasons. Shows I like and love always get cancelled (RIP Arrested Development). Which is why I am shocked that the two new shows I love (this and Heroes) are doing so well.

Last Thursday's results:
The time period premiere of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader opened the evening on a winning note, with a comfortable 12.18 million viewers and a 4.5 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that beat ABC’s competing Ugly Betty (Viewers: #2, 10.77 million; A18-49: 3.4/10) by 1.41 million viewers and 32 percent among adults 18-49.
I believe that is the lowest numbers of the season.

They dropped the ball on advertising last week. They lost 3 mllion viewers. But, I think they're concerned now because I heard they changed the schedule so a new Grey's airs this week so UB has a lead out this week when originally it wasn't going to have one.
anyone else hear this?
If so, they better promote it because I'm not sure people know even now that there will be a new episode this week. I haven't seen any promos and I haven't heard about any either.

Mar 19, 2007 @ 10:14 pm
I haven't heard about the Grey's schedule change but ABC really needs to keep their viewers better informed about the status of their shows.
ABC didn't even mention that UB was going on a hiatus last time after Derailed. After it had aired, some of my friends were confused as to why there were no promos for the new episode. Since I read the boards and such, I knew it was going on hiatus and told them. However, other shows I've watched, like House, always say that they are going on a three-week break or something so that their viewers know what's going on. ABC should really do the same.

Weird, I heard they made the Grey's change to give a lead-
in to October Road.
I had a feeling we lost a little steam this week when there wasn't a lot of episode thread activity, so these numbers don't surprise me. I'm sure it's just this whacky time of year (the reality show season, sweeps is over, lots of serials still *are* on hiatus, etc).
Probably due to the previous two week's repeats.
I think it was actually a month-long hiatus.
It looks like 'Swag', the first new episode after the winter hiatus, had a similar downward turn, followed by a bump back up the following week:

According to
Televisionista, ABC are considering moving UB to Sundays, before Desperate Housewives:
The broadcast networks in the US are scrambling to put together their new fall grids ahead of the Upfronts event in New York City next week where all schedule changes are unveiled. As TV Guide reports, one of those changes at ABC may be an "Ugly" one.
According to Michael Ausiello, the network is considering moving the critically-acclaimed comedy to Sundays at 8 as a lead-in to "Desperate Housewives," perhaps a more compatible pairing.
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" would, under that scenario, move to 7 p.m. replacing "America's Funniest Home Videos," while "Men In Trees" which gets an extended 27-episode season would anchor Thursday nights from 8 p.m.
There is no indication yet if "Brothers & Sisters" would remain on Sunday nights at 10 p.m., but there have been rumors in the past the show could move to Monday or Tuesday nights.
The network will of course have the final say. ABC is presenting its new schedule on Tuesday, May 15 at 4 p.m. EST.

and as the finale approaches the show continues to drop... Under 10 Million and a measley 2.9? What happened to the show? Ugh.
ABC’s declining Ugly Betty finished second in the hour in total viewers (9.39 million), but a fourth-place 2.9/ 9 among adults 18-49 could be a concern.

The marketing of all the shows have been kind of weird this year. At least to me. Usually, the ABC promo department gets all "This is the best episode ever" when it comes to the finales of the show and it just seems so weirdly lowkey.

What happened to the scheduling for the repeats during this summer? I never get a chance to watch these TV shows when they first air, so I will rewatch them during the summer. ABC was repeating the episodes in chronological order from the very episode, and then suddenly they skipped ahead a number of episodes. That totally ruins the buildup for these episodes, and now I've been spoilered. They did that with Gilmore Girls this summer as well.

Jul 20, 2007 @ 6:31 pm
I'm pretty sure it has to do with the premiere. I've heard several people cite September 27th as the start date for season 2. They can't be confirmed yet, of course, but from the episode that aired last night, if ABC then continues to air all the remaining eps in order, the repeat of East Side Story would show the week before this proposed date. Which seems ages away, I might add. *sigh*

Buy the DVD of course.
I never buy DVD's of tv shows, because well, why? The humor is neverlasting and the story had been recycled over and over again.
but Betty, poor sweet Betty, is the one show I will buy. I am probably going to rewatch every episode in the series at least 15 times to catch all the inside jokes and banter.

Week two of CBS’ Survivor: China opened the evening with a first-place 8.4 rating/13 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. -- two percent above the second season-premiere of ABC’s Ugly Betty (8.2/13). Comparably, Ugly Betty debuted with a much healthier 12.2/19 on Sept. 28, 2006. That’s a loss of a hefty 33 percent.

Before anyone gets too alarmed, it's also way up from where it was at the end of last season. The viewers from the very first episode are bound to be higher than those for any other- everyone checks it out and then those who like it stay and those who don't leave. Look at at it this way: two-thirds of the people who watched just the first episode of this show have liked it enough to still be watching it now. Plus, if ABC MediaNet is to be believed, these are the highest ratings they've had since February. Still, we need more viewers. Survivor over UB? Now that's a travesty.

Dont feel bad. It could be much worse. Big Shots I hear bombed!
Bionic Woman did 13.9 million
Private Practice (with super hype) only 14 million (and I see it not even making it to S2.)
Greys did 20 million but down 23 percent from last yrs opener.
DH well see this week, but I see it between UB & Greys. Like 16 million. This coming from show that used to do 25 million regularly the first two seasons.
I think it be mistake to move the show.
