A place to continue discussion!

An end of an era. Wow. Maybe B/M will get the hint and stop this trainwreck with season 20 (20? Ridiculous.). The relevance of the show left a long time ago. To Laguna Beach with you, B/M and MTV!
Dbrain2004
Wow. I honestly never thought I'd see the day when the show would be PH'ed. It seemed like a staple, like Survivor or 24.

Well, at least it should be interesting, having everything in one thread.
Mita_Jo
My heart dropped when I saw The Real World here. I can't believe there won't be anymore recaps. Is there no way to make this thread like the Real World/Road Rules Challenge thread, where we can still have individual topics, or does the thread have to meet certain requirements for that? Just curious.
cooter
Holy cow!

I blame Wes for this.
Lantern7
I blame Tyler. And Tyler. Oh, and Tyler.

*sniff* No more Ghost Bunim summaries? I'm...I'm sorry, I just have *sniff* something in my eye...

Okay...so...last great RW season? I say NOLA for the oddly compelling cast of characters.

ETA: Not to dispute you, EarthMomma, but the Miami kids had to go on a "business venture" or some shit like that. I'd put 'em in the top third of RW seasons, based on Cynhia and Sarah alone. Mmmmmm....Wildstorm bricabrac everywhere....
EarthMomma
The last great season was Miami because the housemates had to hold their own jobs outside of the b.s. B/M assignment.
Cessilina
No more? Awwwww.

Lantern7, I blame Tyler too. It's all his fault! This past season sucked like no other sucky season has sucked and he was at the helm of the U.S.S. Suckage. He's now in my top 5 most hated reality TV contestants. There's now 2 out of 5 from the RW. I'm sure that will grow as time goes on.

I'm bummed. Maybe, hopefully there will be a section like RW/RR challenge because with 20 seasons and counting, there's just too much yummy goodness to pack into one thread.
Lambot Leg
I blame Wes for this.

So do I. Wes is the reason that I didn't watch Key West, and Fresh Meat was the first challenge I didn't watch.
michaeldh8
I'm confused. What happened? Why this thread?
Mita_Jo
San Diego is the last great season for me. There were some bad ones before it and some bad ones after it, but it was truly the most fun season (for me) after New Orleans.

michaeldh8, most shows get PH'd because there isn't a lot of interest on the board for them. I believe the show threads have to be 20 pages long each week (to keep the seperate threads and to be recapped) and this last season barely broke 10 pages most times. I'm actually suprised it wasn't PH'd a couple of seasons ago. Still doesn't make me any less sad.
nicepebbles
I second that michaelhd8. I'm in shock. Shock I tell you.

Anyway, now that I think about it, it's about time. Everyone should be moving on from this show. Like thejt said, relevance is over.
ambystone
Damn, first Whitney and Bobby split and now this. Whatever happened to staying together for the children? It really is the end of an era.
skittishkitten
Damn, here I was thinkin' someone started a new RW thread on accident...until I glanced over a bit and saw Glark's name. I'm not surprised (and like you, Mita Jo, I thought it was gonna happen a bit sooner than this), but it would be interesting to have 3456 different RW topic discussions in one thread. Assuming this next season isn't completely unwatchable.
tanyak
This saddens me, too. I admit, Real World hasn't been don't miss TV for me since San Diego, and I'm actually surprised the PH didn't come sooner. Still, the end of an era (sigh).
MultiColoredGal
What does PH'd mean?
Porky
PH'd means they're not doing recaps anymore :(
(To be more technical PH stands for Permanent Hiatus.)

Everyone should be moving on from this show. Like thejt said, relevance is over.
The relevance may be over, but unfortunately my obsession is not...
Mita_Jo
The relevance may be over, but unfortunately my obsession is not...
Mine either. I will watch the show until they no longer make them. Even if I hate every single person on the cast (like with the Las Vegas cast) I'll watch every episode because I won't want to miss anything.
aleeshie
Wow. The end of an era.

I can't say I'm that surprised, though. There seemed to be a pretty big drop-off in the forums from Austin to Key West. Entertainment Weekly used to do a TV Watch recap for The Real World, but they've stopped, too.
MaxPower
Shocked, but not surprised, to see RW get PH'd.
San Diego was the last season that I was really into, though Philly had its moments. Austin was the last straw for me.
ishcabibble
Wow, I haven't posted over in the RW board for a few seasons, but was shocked, shocked that it was PH'd! Like someone said upthread, it seemed like a staple.

For me, the Chicago season was the last relevant one. It was the last one to not focus almost exclusively on drinking and sex, and with the Kyle/Kerri, Aneesa/Tonya, Cara/everyone interpersonal drama, it was still about them interacting with each other. Although Philadelphia really wasn't bad also.

I still miss the good old LA, SF, and London days, though! **sniff, sniff**
Newhope
As Flavor Flav says.., Woooooow! Operation PH'd is in full effect!

Last one I watched on regular basis was Chicago.
duck soup
I actually discovered TWoP because of the Real World! It was in the dark days of grad school when I lived alone and couldn't afford cable (shudder). I think it was the Chicago season and those recaps were all I had for almost an entire year.

Seriously, I am on board with the not being able to move on due to my raging obsession. I know the show lost all of its edge a long time ago but it is reassuring to know that every week seven strangers will solve all of their beefs with one another in a half hour.

Now that I think about it, without the recaps I might be able to resist watching this crap.
Porky
I still miss the good old LA, SF, and London days, though! **sniff, sniff**
I cannot believe you just listed London as a "good" season! It was practically as bad as Paris.

If you asked me to explain the London season to somebody who hadn't watched it, my recollections would be something like "this fake punk guy got his tongue bit off and basically nothing else notable happened." Because really: RW London = total snoozefest.

Word, this sucks. Heh.

Stupid fucking Wes and Tyler. Dammit!
Stinger97
Is it wrong that I'm actually glad that all the discussion will be contained in one thread now? I've never been a fan of recaps and rarely read them, so the PH doesn't really affect me. I often find it more enjoyable to have one thread where all discussion of the show takes place. I think it's easier to make friends, and to discuss things. I definitely understand how some might be upset though.
Kim
Aw. The end of an era. For your TWoP historians, I think it was the 3rd show added to the site, and the only one that's still airing new episodes.

I'm proud to report that the last episode of the show that I watched was the last one I recapped, and I never looked back. But I do still watch the Challenge.
MegaJ

I hope something like that is done, it's a nice and neat way of keeping things organized.

I'm still shocked, I thought this show would be recapped forever...

Here's the description from the PH site:

There was a time when people could not stop talking about The Real World. These days, however, the reaction is usually closer to "That's still on?!" Sure, Bunim/Murray created a pop-culture phenomenon when they stuck seven strangers together in a house, and made way for the reality-television craze we're still being skated and duetted to death with. But things change, and with the death of Mary-Ellis Bunim, the franchise began focusing more on casting shallow drunkards to interact with products such as Ford cars or Pepsi than real representative young people with opinions, true individuality, or something to say. In the age of MySpace and bling, cute and bratty seemed like the way to go, rather than interesting and multi-faceted; TWoP readers disagreed, however, as the oldest dog on the site (perhaps?) is put out to pasture. Run free, old trope. Run free!

It's for that reason I assumed it (TRW) would always be a part of MBTV/TwoP (aww MBTV....). But, like The Woman and The Woman once sang, "Enough is enough (is enough)!" New Orleans was the last whole season I watched - and that was only because I lived around the corner from the Belfort.
michaeldh8
Thanks Mita JO and Porky for your explanations, Ph'd is a new concept to me. MegaJ can you give a link to the "PH site" I tried googling with no luck.
Mita_Jo
michaeldh8, its actually this site. The link above that says "Shows" takes you to the listing for all shows that are and have been recapped on TWoP. Here's the link though.
MonyMony
I enjoyed the London season. Yes, it lacked the drama of recent years, but I liked the cast and I appreciated their interactions. I'll take Mike's Ranch dressing quest over Melinda's blurred asshole or Tyler's bitchface any day...
alliebear
When does the new season start? And where is it taking place?
IcyLuna
I loved the episode from the London cast where Jacinda made the crank calls. If nothing else, that alone made the season worthwhile for me.
mayaroo
alliebear, the next season will be in Denver and it premieres on December 5th.
paradig_m
I loved the episode from the London cast where Jacinda made the crank calls.

Me too! Jacinda was such an imp. I actually really liked London.
EarthMomma
I think I saw Jacinda in the trailer for the Billy Bob Thorton/Napoleon Dynamite movie.
mooncreek
I don't know about that one but she's definitely Zach Braff's girlfriend in The Last Kiss.

I too liked the London season because that was the last season the gang had lives (and jobs) that didn't revolve around the other six.
aleeshie
Yeah, that's her. It's called "School for Scoundrels."

I'm glad that she's having a successful career, but she'll always be Jacinda from the Real World to me.
Inflated Ego
Wow...I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. Real World still gets good ratings but it's just not as fun or "water-cooler" as it used to be.

For me, it was the Vegas season with all the whoring and drinking that started making it not fun for me. The Paris yawnfest just killed it. San Diego had its moments however.

For me the Miami, Hawaii, Seattle, and Chicago seasons were the best (and of course NY1 and San Fran). The worst one by far was Back to New York. Annoying useless people + gimmick RW/RR casting intermingling/interwhoring was just embarassingly bad.
Cherry Wire
Well, it may have been posted but since the forum disappeared, here's Denver's cast.

Hard to believe, but if this thing goes on for a few more years, they'll cast someone who wasn't even born when the series started.
Jet Black
I'm also shocked and not surprised to see The Real World PH'd. The show doesn't seem the same since Mary-Ellis Bunim died. I fell competely out of love with this show after Las Vegas (can't stand seeing Trishelle on other shows). There's only so much one can do with a recap if the show isn't that good.
miiiike
I actually thought Key West was the best season in a while. I liked that this cast wasn't wasted the entire time; it made their interactions seem more interesting. This was the first time since New Orleans that I genuinely really liked more than two people. And I liked that a lot of the dumb ass staple episodes were absent, like, "Young inexperienced cast member gets a crash course in race relations from black cast member", "The one where the sort of-significant other (they're on a break, naturally, because there's some in-house hooking to be up) comes to visit", and "Watch these two dipshits falls in love" With the exception of Jose and Zach, who just got no storylines, everyone seemed to be multi-faceted, and I prefered this group 200% over Austin and about 1,000% over Philadelphia.

I'm not surprised that this show got PH'd, though... I think a lot of the dwindling interest can be chalked up to the fact that BMP kind of cheapened the show by putting seasons out fast and furious. A few years ago, Back to NY was coming out and as MTV promo'd the shit out of it, everyone was all excited because Real World hadn't been on in six months and all that jazz. But after Back to NY and really after Vegas, it seems like a new season comes out every 20 minutes. Key West just finished airing, Denver just finished shooting, and they're already in the process of casting the next one. I think that when Denver comes out in a few weeks, there won't be too much interest for most people because it will be like, "Didn't we just say goodbye to Svetlana and them last month?"

I still watched and usually liked this show, but I think it was at its best in its middle years, which I would classify as Miami through New Orleans. Hawaii is my favorite for life and I think I'm the only one, but I hated San Francisco. She was a pain in the ass, so I'm not sure if I could go as far as "I like her", but Rachel's "party girl"/"conservative priss" dichotomy made her very interesting to watch, for me. Everyone else? Snore.
Sonicmat
Holy shit! I was completely shocked to see this show was ph'd. Like most of you, I always thought of this show as a permanent staple. Few other shows have characters vary enough every season to really snark on. Tear....

And, MitaJo:

San Diego is the last great season for me. There were some bad ones before it and some bad ones after it, but it was truly the most fun season (for me) after New Orleans.

WORD.
Jeannine8
I actually thought Key West was the best season in a while.

Yep, me too. The seasons had gone downhill, I was suprised at how 'good' the Key West season was. It kind of reminded me of earlier seasons, before it started stucking really bad.
paradig_m
I really enjoyed Chicago for some reason. It's one of my top five seasons (I loved NY-1, San Fran, London and Boston). I think I enjoyed it so much because of and not in spite of CJP's, Kyle's and Tonya's delusions!
19bored
I thought the last good season was Philly. I know a lot of people didn't like that, but I thought that season had interesting people with decent personalities. I thought Austin sucked and Key West was too same-y from episode to episode and was a little bit boring.
thecakewitch

Honestly, I'm not shocked. I could see it coming. I can't even remember the last time I'd visited the RL boards here, which only proves it's been a very long time since I've bothered watching.

I agree re Mary-Ellis. I don't remember in which cast book it was in, but I recall Jonathan Murray saying something to the effect of M-E being the "mom" and the "nurturer" of all past and present RWers -- she was the one who pushed for the "real-ness" and the diversity and the "there's more to life than partying" angle. He was the opposite, which is why he claimed they worked together so well.

The trainwreck that was Las Vegas was the last season I watched in its entirety. I saw a few episodes of San Diego, but outside of that, I've had absolutely no interest since.
SassandtheCity
I went to go see The Last Kiss and Jacinda from the London season was really good in it and actually one of the only reasons I didn't walk out of the theater because I really despised the movie. A lot.
tribefreak
Yeah, I'm kind of weary of that movie too. I think it has more to do with Zach Braff and all his "thoughtful" staring off into the distance he seems to be doing since "Garden State". It seems mighty pretentious, especially the soundtrack.
