The first episode just aired. The script was pretty routine, but Brad Garret really elevated it. I'll probably keep watching.

It seems to me like it's one of those shows where you have to relate to the material to get it. My dad has been married for twenty years and found it hilarious and I thought it was mildly amusing probably because I'm not married. I'll stick around for the next episode but it seems like the schtick will get old after awhile.
Rinaldo
I was relieved that it at least had some sort of plot, and wasn't just about "this is what new couples are like / this is what old couples are like" contrasts, as the promos suggested. But it seems like it'll wear thin awfully fast. We'll see, I guess. (Or rather, others will see -- not I.)
Teagan1
It wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but there have been a lot of sitcoms over the years that I haven't liked in the beginning that stayed on the air for a long time. I can relate parts of it because I've been married for 11 years now. I'll watch a few more epidsodes to see if it gets any better.

The "Woodcock" bits are going to get old fast, though.
smarty marty
The New York Times really panned this show yesterday. We watched anyway and thought it was hilarious. But I'll concede to the other posters who said maybe you have to be able to relate---five years into marriage, we really related to this.

I thought it started out slow, but picked up the pace a little at the end. I really like Joely Fisher in this (MUCH better than in Desperate Housewives), she is a good pairing for BG. AND she was able to pull off some of her lines better, too. I don't like the weasle-y looking guy playing half of the young couple, though. Too milketoaste.

I'll probably give it another shot or two.
gsheerdt
I turned it off halfway through.
GuyInGA
That weasally guy is Eddie Kaye Thomas, who played Finch in American Pie.

I liked the show, but looking back and thinking about the episode, I don't think the series will last. Usually the stuff that I like on FOX never last. I was a fan of Life On A Stick but of course FOX cancelled it.

And the premise of the show with BOTH male characters being teachers is too coincidential. The show almost lost me when they discussed sex at a high school. Most teachers I know in high school usually talk about how they hate the kids and their lives. I kept waiting for some old, grouchey, tobacco infused female teacher to walk in, hear their conversation, misconstrue it and get them both fired.

Still, the last bit on the show (where Brad Garrett runs out of the house to play pool and can barely fit in the pool room) was hilarious.
Eegah
Woodcock was the vice principal, actually. I was really expecting some In Good Company-style jokes with Garrett stressing about having a boss half his age, but thankfully they didn't go there.
Silparcan
I'm hoping someone with a slightly better memory than mine can confirm this but wasn't this a remake of the pilot episode of Married with Children? Or maybe an homage?
Skotodes
No, Silparcan, it was totally different. Sure, both shows are about a perky couple of newlyweds moving in next door to a cynical old married couple, and getting corrupted by them. But there's a simple way to avoid confusing "Married with Children" and "Til Death": "Married with Children" was funny.

Yeah, I thought this sucked. It relied too much on the comedic "talent" of Brad Garrett; too many scenes were just him mugging or talking in a funny voice or doing physical comedy. The material was bland, and has been done a million times before. (Remember the "Seinfeld" episode where George's father puts a pool table in a room that's too small? So do the writers of this show!") The only joke I found remotely amusing was the Kool-Aid packet at the end. Besides that, this was just another boring sitcom about how men and women are different.

I was looking forward to this show b/c of BG, my fave on ELR. I'd give this show 2.5 out of 5. It could be much better and hopefully it does get better. Or else MNiE is going to kill it.

I agree that the premise could get old real quick. I mean how many times has this type of thing been done to death? About a show where the newlyweds aren't like the Woodcocks b/c they've been together forever so it's not all warm and fuzzy but still good anyway. I got married 2 years ago and Mr. Nice and I were not like the Woodcocks. We dated for 5 years before hand. The same goes for some other couples I know.

And how about a couple that has been married for years and are like the Woodcocks? I don't know any but I'm sure they exist.
Rinaldo
What I am wondering is: why the silly contraction 'til in the title, when we have the perfectly good word "till"?

Yes, I know they're both permitted by the dictionary, but the former spelling just annoys me.
ElGato
I thought the show was so-so. I'll give it another few episodes to see where it goes. Joely's character seemed a little like a carbon copy of Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond. Joely managed to call Brad an idiot at least once, just like Debra. That was the one thing I didn't like about ELR, Debra always telling Ray what an idot he was, so I hope this show doesn't go in that direction.

I've got one question though, my TIVO cut off too soon. I saw the part where Brad went next door to play pool, the room was way too small, then it cuts to Joely answering the door.... Can somebody please fill in the blanks here? I'm assuming the younger wife came over and said/did something that would've been the entire punchline for the ending. Thanks.
Eegah
While trying to set up a shot, Garrett knocked down the cue rack which hit him in the head. He then went back home so his wife could drive him to the hospital, as he said earlier is the real purpose of marriage. The two of them had a sweet little moment after he got stitched up, interrupted by a call from the young guy, asking how he can get rid of the pool table. Garrett tells him to get his wife pregnant, then turn the room into a playroom.

Boy, I just did not get anyone's names.
ElGato
Thanks a million Eegah! The only name I remember is 'Woodcock' since it was mentioned at least 50 times!
writebabe
I thought Brad was chewing scenery big time and he should just chill and let Joely participate rather than hang on. A "classics" cable outfit is Canada is airing the old Ellen sitcom and Joely can hold her own. With Ellen and Jeremy Piven, so they could easily have the acting partnership the younger couple has.

I did not watch it, but that's the exact impression I got from the ads, except there were no children.
mooncreek
You can tell FOX picked it up for the Married With Children-like beginning. That channel loves that as evidenced by the fact that The War at Home is still on the air. Brad Garrett was interested because he wanted to be part of a modernized Honeymooners - remember, this is the guy who recently played Jackie Gleason in a tv movie.

I admit that I liked the first episode and will give it another week.

One bug: the Woodcock thing. If you are a male with that last name, you really should have heard the jokes before - like in the twelve years of school. It shouldn't be a shock for the young guy. It would have been funny for the wife to just realize it, as the name is new for her.
TheMents
I liked it better when it was called "The Honeymooners."

The jokes seemed fresher then. Maybe they should shoot it in black & white.
JackiFL
Was I the only one waiting for Joely to crack a joke about "Ellen" when Brad G. was watching it? Seemed like a perfect set-up... sigh...

Probably right, lambertman. I guess I've fallen into the typical sitcom "fever" and look forward to being beat over the head!
lambertman
I think the "oh, is that Ellen?" line was enough of a joke. No need to beat us over the head with it...
Skotodes
I figured out what this show reminds me of, even more than "Married With Children." Anyone ever read "The Lockhorns"? (If so, I'm sorry.) It's a single-panel newspaper comic about two married people who absolutely despise each other. It's completely devoid of humor, repetitive, and extremely dated. The resemblence to "Til Death" is astounding.
VersesBatman
I guess I won't make this show part of my line up. I hate The Lockhorns.

My husband and I have almost been married 1 year, and we relate more to the older couple than the newlyweds. I think that's why we find it amusing.

Joely's character seemed a little like a carbon copy of Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond.

I thought the same thing! She kind of looks like her and they speak in the same way. However, I haven't watched that many episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond, so I only find it funny, and not annoying.

I watched it alone (forget where Mr. Nice was) and I related more to the older couple as well.
Jake
On the whole, I thought tonight's episode was significantly more funny than the pilot last week. I actually LOL a few times...That being said, however...

WRITERS...show a basic understanding of reality...only an IDIOT pierces steaks to turn them rather than using tongs, which we know he has, since he went to get them to move the corn.

lambertman
Oh yeah, i did post in this thread. :)

I had exactly the opposite reaction as did Jake - my enjoyment dropped massively from the pilot. I'll gigve it at least another week, though.
Unraveled
I watched both of the episodes, and was kind of meh about the whole thing. Both of the couples are such exaggerations that I couldn't really liked either of them. I do like the three actors (I've never seen the younger woman before).

The one thing I would like to see is Eddie and Joy's daughter that is in college. And don't they (both of the couples) have any other friends?
ElGato

Ditto, except that I won't be tuning in again. This episode just didn't seem to flow very well and the jokes seemed forced. I also have a hard time seeing Brad Garrett as anybody other than Robert Barone. "Sex for Furniture" just wasn't funny to me, but as always, YMMV.
auanha
They cancelled Arrested Development for this?
Corbinxxa84
I hate The Lockhorns.

Am I the only one whom finds that name bordering on insultingly stupid?

Kind of like having mean dentist charachter and naming him "Dr. Payne." Like... we get it. The name doesn't add anything.
Worleybird
I preferred this episode to the pilot. And looking back at it, it was very cheap for FOX to produce. It was only the four leads, not even an extra used during the show.
mooncreek
Corbinxxa84 - my dad has cut out the strips for years. Yet I never thought about the name meaning anything until just now. off to Moments that Went Over Your Head thread.

I thought the second episode was funnier. Even though I do see the resemblence between Joely Fisher's character and Debra Barone, Debra was my least favorite character on ELR but I enjoy Joy.

And where is this forum located? (sneaks away)

I really enjoy Brad Garrett and think the show is a decent vehicle for him (hate the Woodcock dude) but I am pretty sure My Name is Earl will crush it in the ratings when it returns this Thursday. I don't watch Earl (most of the characters seem to be morons) but lots of people like it.

What about the untouchable kid on his scooter in the hallway?
Worleybird
The untouchable skateboard kid was in the pilot. He wasn't in the second show. You see how forgettable this show is ?
LAgator77

I'd watch My Name is Earl over this dreck any day of the week.
mml78
From what I've seen, the writers on this show kill the jokes by beating them to death. Like, in the preview for this coming episode when they're talking about whether BG's character's proposal was romantic, he says something like, "We were coming out of Top Gun, I was emotional." OK, that's funny. Chuckle. And then he just has to continue on by saying, "And I asked you to ride into the danger zone with me." Not funny. Contrived.
Worleybird
This Thursday, (now with the 'hiatus' HA! of 'Happy Hour') they will be showing TWO episodes of this show. One new, and one repeat. This is only show #4. Do any of the first three deserve an 'encore' showing? Don't think so.
Gypsie
The fact that this show only has 3 pages of posts does not bode well for it. I can't say I'm sorry about that.
Capt Clownfish
Agreement here, Gypsie.

I almost posted something after last week's episode, but why bother.

Hackneyed, formulatic pablum. Nothing interesting about it at all.

It will probably run as long as "Yes, Dear."
irishlulu
I only watched one episode, the engagement ring one, and I found myself feeling angry through the whole thing. I love Brad Garrett, but I sure do hate this character he's playing. He's so negative and MEAN!! I'm wondering why his wife has stayed with him for 20 years.

Guess I'll stick to ELR reruns...
mooncreek
No, this is the bad sign. It's more than 24 hours after a new episode and nobody has commented on it.

Either that or the viewers are still recovering from the image of the two guys having their shirts off.
JackiFL
Going to have to wait to see that one in reruns since I had to DVR Ugly Betty and Survivor. Only two shows at a time can be "taped". Since I wasn't home, 'Til Death lost out.
Worleybird
And yet another rerun Sunday night! Jeez!
Cione
This show is sincerely and truly awful... and somehow I think I've seen every episode, as they keep managing to put it on between shows I do watch. Whatever time of the week I turn on the TV, there it is.

I really detest shows where husbands and wives don't even seem to like each other.
Jenn211
This show and Happy Hour are the worst of the new bunch shows. Why any network green lights them is beyond me. Standoff, Justice and Vanished are next on the hiatus list.
LAgator77
Hmmm... this is interesting news:
Meanwhile, the industry trade claims that "'Til Death" is taking a longer-than-expected break after star Brad Garrett wasn't enthusiastic about the most recent script.
It must suck to go from one successful, celebrated comedy to this crap.
