I liked it. I actually found myself laughing out loud at some parts.

The super hero perody was kind of funny...but I love the little girl trying to win over the father for Shin's hand.
Leaper
Oh, Lord. Case Closed gets yanked, my favorite mystery manga (Kindaichi Case Files) can't get an even break, but they bring over CRAYON FRIGGIN' SHIN-CHAN??!

Arrrrrgh!
Clockstomper24
Just a note, this was episode 3. They'll start airing in order on Monday, in it's regular weeknight slot. Well, as regular as "on the air for two weeks before the slot returns to Inuyasha repeats" is.
mangaqueen
I'm still surprised though that someone picked this up. Normally the US companies would never touch something this old.
Vermicious Knid
Was there even a point to this? I was bored.
vcalzone
I also liked it. It was random and witty.
Lantern7
Very funny stuff...and that was before I found out that Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer are "punch-up" writers. Sick stuff all around, but in a good way.
lathspel
I thought I wouldn't like it, but it turned out to be very very funny.

Were some of the English interjections more topical than the original Japanese? The bit about internal spying, for instance, seemed very on point. In general it seemed to have references that would make more sense for the U.S. market.

I know there are some shows that ad-lib or only loosely approach the original script; is this one of them?
Clockstomper24
I think after the failure of the boring and incomprehensible Super Milk Chan, they decided to go heavy on the americanization. It's working so far...
vespa
Surprisingly, I found myself laughing out loud as well. I think my favorite was the whole "gotta get 10 green pepper sausage wrappers in order to get the Action Bastard, Bastard Belt".

I rather have dog scrotum.
Thank you, Action Bastard!
It tastes like crotch.

It's like old South Park humor cut up into little stories. I like this much better than Super Milk Chan.
lathspel
I agree, I couldn't make it through more than one ep of Super Milk Chan. This one is far superior, at least for my dumb American tastes :) .
Lantern7
Apples and oranges, my fellow otaku. SMC was supposed to be absurd, what with a young heroine who's too lazy to fight crime most of the time, a caterpillar that broke in for monologues, the quarreling ant couple living under the house...it was supposed to be weird. Shin Chan? It's supposed to be insane, and that comes through even with the heavy-handed dubbing. Of course, even if liberties were taken with the script, I can't get it out of my head (e.g., "Whooooores!").
Vermicious Knid
I would bet the English version bears almost no resemblance to the orginal dialogue.
Lantern7
While I'm thinking of it...

"It's like the spotlight dance at a comic convention!"

"I just like to imagine that the pigs are Nazis."
Clockstomper24
Seeing episode 3 in proper order helps make sense of why Shin's father kept talking about being beaten by his wife whenever Ench-Man showed up.

I would bet the English version bears almost no resemblance to the orginal dialogue.

No doubt, but at least it's tolerable to sit through. And it is fun to hear things like Major Armstrong's voice wailing "Lessssbians!"
Nimberlane
Oh god. The way they treated the bunny punching like a terrible drug addiction had me rolling on the floor laughing. This show is just too funny! Also the commentary of the poor bunny wishing for death choked me up too.

Action Bastard All-Men-Are-Bastards-Don't-Touch-My-Happy-Cake!!!!!!

O lord. Shin Chan is the funniest shit I've seen in quite some time. I do hope more people get on board for this one. I love the direction they took punching up the script. It fits the American mentality of an off-the-wall show better that the origional would have by itself, I'm sure.
caffinated
I don't care if the dialogue has any relation to the original or not - this incarnation is damn funny. As soon as I saw it mentioned upthread that Evan Dorkan was helping to punch up the scripts, I knew I'd like it.

"Who knew green stamps went so far these days?"
MrBananaGrabber
Woah, all anime should be non-sensically redubbed if the writing is as good as this.

Remember Most Extreme Elimination Challenge? This is what that could have been.

Action- BASTARD!
Lantern7
caffinated...let me guess...you get steamed up anytime you remember that Welcome To Eltingville didn't get picked up by CN. Am I right?

"Soft, brown and succulent...that's how I like my balls." - Ench-Man
caffinated
Not so much steamed, but disappointed, yes. I thought it was hilarious, but I can see how the nerd in-joke quotient was a bit too high even for [as]'s tastes. ;)

Luckily, it looks like we'll get some of that Fun with Milk and Cheese style insanity with Shin Chan.
mangaqueen
"Open up, it's the ass police!"
Vermicious Knid
Two of the people behind Space Ghost: Coast to Coast are responsible for punching up the dub. That explains a lot.
BenPanced
This is the replacement for Stupid Milk-Chan?

Works for me.

Hee. "Action Bastard".

Get. It. Out. Of. My. Head...
Clockstomper24
Yes, I've got it my head too.

Although, now I'm sad to see it all end. I hope CN orders more episodes.
ghettofabman
Sadly, I am kinda hooked...terrible graphics and all.
Lyle Lyle

When I lived in Hawaii, I used to watch a subtitled Shin Chan. It was okay, but strangely compelling in an "Everybody Loves Hypno Toad" kind of way.

Dorkin & Dyer's punch-up dialogue gives the show exactly what it needs to be pitch perfect.
Orion7
Holy Mary, Mother of God, I love this show! Everytime I allow the animation to lull me into thinking it is just about schoolkids, along comes some obscene line to make me laugh. "It's like Brokeback, only with ugly boys," or "A kiss is the best thing a girl can blow." Yikes. The punch-up writers are doing a great job.

It was the bunny-punching episode really sold me on this show, though.

Which character is Armstrong's VA (Christopher Sabat) voicing? For the life of me, I just can't hear it.

In the interest of full disclosure, I also loved Super Milk Chan. I just wish I understood more of it.

All this and the first Bleach promo, too!
Lantern7
One problem...repeats already? Surely there are more episodes out there, right?
ParasiteTwin
I want more episodes, too. I loved when the grocery store sample lady called him a little Emeril. The resemblance is there!
davidmello

It was creepy, yet very funny. You'd never see this on Billy and Mandy.
Supposedly Funimation made 8 episodes, but we're getting six right now. Hopefully, we'll get even more. It's pretty surprising this show has been on Japanese TV almost as long as The Simpsons.
Dariendude15
WHAT!?!?!? Only Eight eps!? MORE! I DEMAND MORE!!
blank stare
I've managed to miss every episode but I did see a bit where someone was playing one of those dating type (aka porno) video games and one of the options was to "treat her like crap". I really need to see the rest.
Vermicious Knid
I'm now intensely curious what the original context of all the bunny-punching was.
Clockstomper24

He plays Ai's bodyguard. Also, he used the Armstrong voice for the annoucer in the Enchman sequences. "Lesbians! Schitzophrenia! Tomatoes are fruits!"

I'm sad this is the end of Shin-Chan on weekdays. Two more Saturday airings and it'll be off the air for good.
Dariendude15
DAMMIT! Why cant Adult Swim give anime more of a chance!? Is there some really really really logical reason why they can't just sneak Shin into the 10:30 slot!?!? You know, other than potential ratings loss?
Coolsnesses
Shin Chan.. in English? Wow. I have to download the episodes!

I come from Malaysia, and Shin Chan is like the funniest shit around here. Little kids (although Shin Chan is not such a good example for them) and teens like myself love it. The comic and TV series are hilarious! They were dubbed in the Malay language though, it was so lame, yet still funny. I used to have a stack of them before my mom threw them away (saying something like, "useless crap!").. Hee.
vcalzone
I don't think it's off for good, is it? They only had a few episodes for that test run, I thought. From the ratings results I saw, I thought it did pretty well. I'd find it hard to believe they would pass on more episodes of this show. Everyone seemed to like it.
lathspel
@vcalzone - yeah, that's what I heard as well.

Where did you see the ratings info? On the [AS] site?

I am so hoping it comes back for a more complete run - my wife and I both love the utter zaniness!

I can't believe I missed the Armstrong-ness of "LESBIANS!". Must've been the lack of sparklies.
vcalzone
Well, all I remember is vague from bumps and/or hearsay, but I'm pretty sure I saw that it was considered relatively successful. I find it hard to believe that it wouldn't be, since it's one of the only shows that both anime and comedy fans seem to both enjoy equally.
Dariendude15
A bump last sunday said that they want to bring more Shin Chan, and that phone calls would be made. For their sake and for the sake of their famalies' safety, let's hope their successful.
Dariendude15
Yes. YES. YEEEESSSS!!! Sweet Hesoos YES!!!
Spudlett90
Thanks for the link Dariendude15. I can now sleep with a smile, this is excellent news! Ass Dances for everyone!
MrBananaGrabber
Nice, I'm surprised how much I missed this show on Saturdays.

"Action Bastard!"
Pat Agonia
Boo-frickin'-yah! I hope this means newly dubbed episodes. And hopefully that Adult Swim doesn't pull a Case Closed on it.
Lantern7
Thinking of you guys. If any of you are going to the con, maybe we could meet up. Also, I just checked Evan Dorkin's page, and he and wife/writing partner Sarah Dyer will be coming as well.
Orion7
Now, meet the people who made it all happen, and ask them how they can sleep at night.

Ha! I can hardly wait until this show comes back.
Lantern7
It wasn't much of a panel...just some marketing lady, the voice of Shin (nice lady), and some poor bastard dressed as Shin with an oversized head. There is news I have to share: Shin Chan has been picked up by Adult Swim, and episodes will air in April; the show has gotten a merch license from Balls Out, which handles South Park; and a DVD will come out this September with 14 epiosdes. The material will be in English, since the Japanese release isn't that good in terms of quality. Also, click here if you'd like to join the Bastard Brigade.
Orion7
...and some poor bastard dressed as Shin with an oversized head.

Poor bastard is right.

Thanks for the news on the April airing. They're half hour episodes, right? So they can replace both Tim and Eric's Crapfest and Assy McGee. Sweet.
