I had the pleasure of first meeting Couch Baron on the pages of the Buffy Quote game when that show was still on air. Many a happy, if frustrating, hour was whiled away trying to work out the current round. No doubt in a fit of nostalgia, CB has allowed me to introduce it here.
The rules are fairly straightforward. You get a point each for the speaker, the person to whom they are speaking and the episode. If the setter has done a theme, there are bonus points for getting the theme, which are announced at the start. Usually, bonus points are reduced if a hint is required.
The theme can be anything that links the quotes together. People can get very devious!
The person who tallies up the most points, gets to start the next round.
That's it really. Want to try? I've prepared one to get us going.
One point each for speaker, speakee and episode. There is a theme. Fifteen points for the theme.
1. For the past three months, we've been grieving, trying to put our lives back together again.
2. We gotta go now, or things are gonna fall apart.
3. You must be really unlucky in love.
4. Stay right here.
5. You said the whole night was a blur.
6. Let it go.
7. [Name]! What’s happening?
8. Nice ride.
9. Do it now.

Quick question, indigo---if you only know the speaker/speakee of a few of these quotes, can you post only those answers, or do you have to take a stab at labeling the speaker/speakee of EVERY quote? Also, once someone lists the speaker/speakee of a certain quote, does the next TWoPer ALSO give his/her guess for that quote, or only for those that haven't yet been guessed? And, finally, am I really dense for not getting the rules to this seemingly simple game?! Yes...yes, I am! Can't wait to play.

Jun 4, 2006 @ 4:11 pm
Yes, you can post as many or as few as you know. The setter keeps a running tally of the points. If you're the first to get a point for a right answer, then you get the point, further correct guesses of that particular one are discounted. You can post as often as you like too. These are fairly benign. On the Buffy board, we used to get things like "Hey" to identify!

I'm sure as the game goes along I will understand it more. So right now I can post the answers to the quotes that I know?

Is it characters with an (in)ability to move on? I...am guessing.
In the Buffy game, didn't the original quotes link to a particular scene? Is that where this is eventually going?
InigoMontoya
Jun 4, 2006 @ 5:01 pm
It varied, atropos116. It could be anything that linked them, the scenes, the people, the words, the locations, the sentiments, the...anything. Oh, and for the record, it's not 'characters with an (in)ability to move on.'

I'll give you a free clue on the theme, because it is hard. The answer is a song that is heard in one of the above episodes.
Peg Amy

Is it "Now is the Time"?
InigoMontoya
Jun 4, 2006 @ 5:23 pm
Care to explain?
Peg Amy
Jun 4, 2006 @ 5:25 pm
Sure. Each clue matches up to each line of the lyrics of the song "Now is the Time", the song Logan uses for Lilly's memorial video. Like so.
I could put your pieces back together
And take the rest of you apart
I didn’t think my luck would last forever,
So I think right here is where we’ll start.
When the lines of the past have been blurred
It gets much easier to tell those around to let go.
Now is the time, now we find out what’s really happening
How was the ride of your life?
Now is the time…

Jun 4, 2006 @ 5:28 pm
Ta-da! Fifteen points to Peg Amy who takes the game in a last dash for the line.
Okay, that's the basic game. I'm remembering some other bits as we go on. I believe you can't start to guess the theme until a good proportion of the quotes are identified, and I'm sure there are a few more, but perhaps some of the old game hands can pop along and clarify.
Peg Amy, are you happy to set up the next round?

Peg Amy, are you happy to set up the next round?
Sure! Just give me a few to think of something. It was a great theme, I would never have figured it out if I didn't love that scene so very much.
Here goes. There is a theme.
1. You need to stop.
2. They certainly are.
3. Wanna hear something sad?
4. Don’t call him that.
5. Do you know how to get back to your hotel?
6. Because “I’m sorry” is so helpful.
7. You couldn’t shut up about him.
8. I did try.
9. And the feeling is mutual.
