Twiggy might not have the driving need to demonstrate how much better she is than the neophytes. Personally I think Tyra often looks desperate to be looked at on the show and desperate to hold onto the whole supermodel persona. Twiggy is a little older and perhaps a little wiser.

What was the runway protocol back in Twiggy's day? Was it as "THOMP THOMP THOMP THOMP FIERCE FIERCE FIERCE FIERCE GLARE-AND-TURN-AND THOMP THOMP THOMP OUT" as contemporary modeling or was mod time an era of more gentle walking? Because that may have something to do with it.

You're right! The models used to kind of glide then. They looked cool and uninvolved rather than 'fierce'! I've never understood why the carthorse stomp has become so popular. But then I am old...(exactly the same age as Twiggy, in fact.)

As a dentist, I can only add that I am horrified that they are going about fixing Joanie's teeth by removing what appeared to be 4 incisors (front teeth). This is ethically highly questionable and has doomed Joanie to forever more requiring very extensive prosthetic work (I might also add the 12 hours in the chair has nothing to do with the time needed for the extractions - probably under half an hour - but rather the time necessary to fabricate her some temporary prosthetic teeth). You are better off keeping your own teeth if they are in good condition - no prosthetic/fake tooth is ever a perfect replica or replacement.

Obviously I don't know the exact details of the state of Joanie's mouth, however the likely ideal treatment would have involved orthodontia (braces) with possibly the extraction of 2 or 4 bicuspids so that the crowded canine would have space to be pushed back into. Unfortunately this is a lengthy procedure timewise and does not have the same dramatic appeal for Tyra and Co. I feel extremely sorry for Joanie that being on this show has resulted in this permanent change - after all hair grows back!

=( Good post ... and good point. I was wondering that myself ... I still like Joanie, but the pannel has been complaining about her teeth from the start ... so why put her in the house in the first place?

As other people said earlier in this thread ... when did this show become "The Swan" ? If they need surgery of some sort to turn them into a "Top Model" (or even a MLAACG spokesperson) , then why have them in the house in the first place?

ETA: I also thought that it was strange that they took off Norelle (S3) 's braces during the "makeover" part of that series too. Sending YaYa (S3) to a dermatologist was one thing ... but cutting off Norelle's expensive braces seemed a bit much. Was it even time for the braces to come off yet?

That reminds me of "She's Out of Control."

"Now Katie, these braces aren't supposed to come off for _____ months."

"....Yank 'em, doc."

See? Ami Dolenz just wanted to be fierce and fabulous. And if that's what you're after, it's okay. :)

On another note, did anyone notice the Evil Look of Death Brooke flashed at Nnenna when Tyra called Nnenna's name? Ha.

I thought they gave her the clear plastic ones.

Does anyone else feel like they don't want ANY of these girls to win? Like there's no one who really stands out, no one to root for, because, well, they all kinda suck? Not one of these girls even seems of above-average beauty to me, let alone have modelling talent. Is it just me?

No, it's not just you. This cycle has quickly become as bland as Cycle 5.

I don't think so ... I don't think that's possible. but maybe you're right ... maybe it is. = ) You'd have to ask the dentist on that one. My cousin has the clear plastic ones, and my sister had the metal ones ... and when you take the metal ones off, they give you some sort of retainer you wear so your teeth will stay straight. I think they do the same thing after you stop wearing the clear plastic ones. The retainer is different than the clear plastic braces.

At any rate, braces are expensive, and uncomfortable, and your teeth can move back to where they were before ... that much I know.

So it seemed to me to be wrong that they would remove Norelle's braces too early just for the show. It could undo all the years she wore them and all the money her parents paid to have them put on her in the first place.

No, I agree ... it's not just you. I think that's why we're all so indifferent to this season. Unlike past seasons, I really don't care who wins anymore ... I only care about my least favorites ( like Jade ) not winning.

But, with the possible exception of Nnenna (who I no longer think will win) ... I don't care about who wins. I just hope that she's not unbelievably annoying during her "MLAACG" segments, and that the next cycle's girls are better.

I think that's why "American Idol" is so popular ... I've never watched a single episode, but I've still heard of many of the people from that show ( like, say, Kelly Clarkson ) because they've gone on and done other things after the show was over. So there's a sense that you are watching someone who might go on to be big someday.

Me either, and I'm about Tyra's age. But your comment cracked me up because I started thinking about that scene in "Singing in the Rain" where the announcer is talking about the women's seasonal fashions and how the ladies are all posed in their tennis outfits and ball gowns and whatnot and they look straight out of PG Wodehouse. It had nothing to do with looking "fierce," but the women all looked perfectly competent and relaxed and ... dare I say glamorous?

Topic?

Maybe for Jade's makeover they should have done something about those eyebrows. They look like an old woman's who had tattoos put in where her brows used to be, or is so old she can't see what it looks like when she paints 'em on. Girl looks ridiculous with them old lady eyebrows. Not like she needs to look any older ...

This may not be the place for it, but all I have to say is that I miss Nole Marin so much (and his little dog, too). I rewatched Cycle 4 and thought afterwards that he really added to the panel. If we can't replace Miss Jay with Simon Doonan, can we try Nole? What happened to him anyways?

I love that Danielle isn't afraid to give Jay shit, like when he told her to "make her sisters proud" (asshole), and she replied that all her friends called her a "white girl." Honestly, Sara, Joanie, Danielle, and Furonda really seem to be quite mature and comfortable with themselves, which is a rarity on this show.

She [Leslie] can come live with me, and we can have half-naked fashion shows in my living room every night. You're all invited!

Oh, I'm so there, Potes! Maybe Joanie, Sara, and Sara's luscious mouth can visit, too.
RockChalkJayhwk
agreed. Its weird, the girls from this cycle seem pretty mature compared to earlier seasons. They are relatively older...but then again, Jade is 26, and she ranks among the most immature IMO.
Tenille75
Ha! Good recap Potes.

I had totally forgotten when Jay said "If you think about a white girl, at least think of Irene Cara." When he said that, I was all "But...Irene Cara is a black Latina, and has been marketing herself that way since the 1970's..." I mean she was in 'Sparkle' for God's sake! And she's 'Coco'! Glad I wasn't the only one who had a WTF?! moment over that.

I think a Top Model field trip to Beaver County would be the best. It is certainly uncharted territory for the Jays

This was the best. I can't wait to re-watch the episode now that I have read the recap - it just adds so much more zing and zest to it.

OT: I want Potes to recap a day in my life. That would be an awesome Tubey contest/auction prize.
DarkCorner
I'm still cheering Danielle. I think she can go far especially if the gap will gone. I'm even cheering on her bosom buddy Joanie even though I still think she's a drag queen.

I'd put Leslie in there as well (of course, you've also got Gina which balances out all the girls who've got their shit together.) Potes' recap reminded me that Tyra said that she marches to the beat of her own drummer, which would be a criticism I'd happily receive from Ty-Ty if the alternative is how she broke down Toccara, Brittany, etc. BTW, another interview with Leslie where she says that Joanie was the one who finally (maturely) sorted out the phone issue with Nnnena.

...we can have half-naked fashion shows in my living room every night.

Is that what the kids are calling it now?

Jay "Immanuel"s life is one long 'WTF??' moment. Maybe he meant Jennifer Beals, but like the rest of Hollywood apparently, couldn't quite recall her.

Also it seems that in Jay's world, racial and cultural stereotypes are not unease-inducing remnants of a less-enlightened past, but guides for living. How do you know you're white? You can't dance!! But I love Jay. He reminds me of Sydney (Oz).

Jennifer Beals and her show the L-Word got a pretty big shout out from Tony Soprano in the most recent episode of the Sopranos. An HBO show gives a shout out to a series that airs on it's competitor's netowork. Jennifer Beals is still pretty relevent. [/off topic]

I still don't know what krumping is.

I was at a couple of Hip-Hop theatre panels and workshops and krumping came up. One of the panelists described it as an instinctive outburst of repressed emotions. He said it was like testifying with your body, hip-hop style. It's pretty amazing to see and kind of hard to actually do even if you can kind of get to the surface movement vocabulary. It just doesn't look the same unless you're really feeling it. BTW, there's disagreement amongst krumpers as to whether Tommy the Clown really "invented" the genre.

And I was traumatised by Tyra and Miss J.'s attempts to krump. They shouldve just brought in one of the krumpers to explain but then, it wouldn't have been about Ms. Banks.

I actually thought Jade, Joanie and Leslie got closest to the idea of movement, even though Leslie's expression was rather dour. Nnenna got the clown make-up right and that's about it. I hate to admit it but Furonda's wack weave is growing on me... I liked her picture.

It finally, finally came to me who Jade reminds me of. The turbanned church fashion show did it. She's so completely Norma Desmond!

I am kinda sorta looking forward to tonight's episode -- ANTM is a drug, I think--but the prospect of seeing Joanie suffer tooth extraction on national TV doesn't appeal. And I was horrified by the shot of her last week, bloody-mouthed, talking about having endured 12 hours of dental procedures.

Thanks, too, to the dentist who posted upthread.

Bread and circus, anyone?

But Jennifer Beals is black, too.

Anywho, krumping and clowning aren't exactly the same thing, but if I was Tommy, I wouldn't bother to correct Tyra and Co., either, because ANTM is good exposure. I was a little disappointed that Jade was the only one that actually attempted krumping, but I must give her props on the usage of the water bottle.

Both Jade and Joanie rocked church fashion show, but the only finished photo I liked was LaBrooke's.

As for the Aswirl Twins, I kept thinking about the boys of D-Squared for some reason, then shaming myself for putting them in the same thought as those two.
