Every year Americans sit together in front of the TV watching football. They also wait anxiously for the commercials, knowing they'll likely see scantily clad celebrities, models, and even puppets.

Which ones do you remember?
Dilandau
My favorite this year was the Whopperettes. That commercial was hilarous, and I wish they would show it again.

I also liked the Magic Fridge ad.
Angora Deb
Cat herders!!

Best part was the guy sitting by the campfire, applying a lint roller to himself.

I remember an E-Trade ad that consisted of about a minute of footage of two old guys sitting in a garage, and a chimp standing on top of an overturned milk crate; the chimp then starts dancing poorly as one of the guys played "La Cucaracha" on the accordion.

Cut to a title card that read, "Well, that was a waste of a million dollars. Fortunately, we do better at investing your money."

I remember a beer commercial(forgot the name) where a man is taking skydiving lessons, but is too nervous to jump. Tha instructor grabs a six-pack of the beer, and asks him if he wanted it. He then proceeds to throw the beer off the plane, thinking he will jump after it. All of a sudden, the pilot runs to where the two guys are, and jumps out of the plane, after the six-pack! There is a quick silence, then the instructor says, "see ya!" and jumps out, not wanting to die. My dad and were laughing for a long time! Its a shame I've only seen it once. It has not benn aired since, at least I think so.

Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (from 2003) has to be my all-time favorite Superbowl ad. There are so many great ones, but when he stops to say "Hey, Janice!" in the middle of yelling at Richard for not having a cover sheet on his TPS reports, I still lose it.

Superbowl ads for the past 5 years
zoidbergMD
My favorite Super Bowl ad is probably the one for NFL Network a few years ago, in which several players whose teams didn't make it to the final - plus Bill Parcells and Jerry Jones (!) - sing "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow" from Annie. The tag line: "tomorrow, we're all undefeated again."

I don't know if they aired during the Super Bowl or simply during the playoffs, but I also love the commercials which show people "four months ago" making hilariously wrongheaded predictions about the upcoming NFL season. ("Look, I love the Bears, but we're only winning four games this year." "Chad Johnson? Never heard of him.")

I've think they've run that one a few years now with different/ players coaches. Hopefully there will be a new version this year (and it won't feature any Chiefs players - wishful thinking, I know).

This version features Joe Montana and Ben Roethlisberger in Jamaica. It's not as funny as the Jerry Jones one, but I did like John Gruden singing a verse and then screaming "knock it off!!!" at his kids.

Curiously, Big Ben won the Super Bowl the following year. Maybe this could be a reverse version of the Madden curse?

Angora Deb I'll second cat herders. I remember the guy with the lint roller and the cowboy going out on a limb to get the cat.

<BUMP>

The Superbowl commercials thread is hereby made obvious, so no one mistakenly opens a new one.

Personally? The game leaves me cold - it's the commercials - particularly the ones during the first half of the game.
ThatPoshGirl
I hate that K-Fed is getting paid for being an idiot loser and I hate how much media attention he is getting as a result. Boo media! Boo insurance company I forgot the name of!
missbianca
I LOVE anyhting to do with the Clydsdale Horses! I'm a horse lover and I watch for them. I think my favorite ones are the one with the little donkey who wants to be a Clydsdale, and the little colt who's trying to pull the Budwiser wagon.

But apart from those my second favorite was the Master Card commercial when all the food mascots were having dinner together.

That Dove add made me cry th first time I saw it, mostly cause I felt EXACTLY like that in grammer and especially High School. (they should put warning labels in High School!) I wish there was a fund like that when I was growing up! (does anyone know who sang that version of 'True Colors'? It's one of my favorite songs!!)

What I don't understand is why are most of the commercials seen during the Superbowl only seen during the Superbowl? I mean, besides maybe a Mountain Dew or Pepsi commercial, you really don't see them again on tv. Why spend all that money on making the best, funniest commercial, and not replay it for a few months?
Halloween Mojo
Not only is Kevin Federline getting paid to do a commercial (it's for Nationwide, BTW, which happens to be my insurance agent, so maybe I should rethink that) but he's also getting shit from the restaurant workers association because they don't like the way they are portrayed in the ad.

Which is actually kind of amusing, because no one's even seen the commercial yet.
ThatPoshGirl
I saw the commercial on the news this morning.
Halloween Mojo
Oh.

I thought it was supposed to be debuted during the third quarter. Were you offended on behalf of the Restaurant Workers Association?
ThatPoshGirl
If someone compared me to Kevin Federline I would probably be offended, so I guess I get that.

If we are going to talk about Super Bowl commercials than we have to bring up the best of all time; Mean Joe Greene and the kid with the bottle of Coke. They even made a movie out of it.
ajra
The ad to announce Prince as this year's halftime entertainment is funny. I think it's the sound effects that really do it. Along with Prince's facial expressions, of course.

Budweiser will probably have a sappy Clydesdale-centric ad again, and I will cry. Happens every year. I think my favorite was the one where you see a man getting called away from a black-tie dinner, and he goes off with his doctor's bag, and ends up at a stable, where he helps deliver a baby Clydesdale. Baby horsie! Then, he goes out to the field, where there's this enormous, gorgeous Clydesdale, and the vet says, "Congratulations, dad." Awwwwwwww.

The cat herders were awesome, too. I loved that ad.
BenPanced
You know what? I'm not a football fan, but last year I decided to try and see if I could see some of these ads everybody's going on about. You know what? Every time I flipped over to the game, they weren't even close to running an ad or I'd come in during one of the Not-Special ads. I guess I'll just wait for the ads to show up on YouTube the day after.

I've been asking this for years. Anyone? Anyone?

In some cases, companies blew all or most of their national adverting budget on those Super Bowl spots. It was most notable during the dot com boom (companies used to brag about blowing their budget), but I remember that Master Lock's national budget was one ad every year on the SB for a long time.

I also think they might be shooting for the same kind of cachet that the Apple ad had back in 1984. It ran once and the pre-internet era, that was the only time that anyone ever saw it anywhere, yet people talk about it to this day. Over twenty years later Apple is still getting free pub off that ad.

For me, that ad is still the ultimate SB ad, I saw it when it first aired and absolutely loved it. Didn't see it again until probably 15 years later and was surprised at how well it still held up.

Has anyone seen the ad for some company (insurance? banking?) where they talk about their upcoming Superbowl ad? Something about showing guys wearing thongs, and not knowing if they can pull it in time. Have any other companies made an ad about a Superbowl ad before? Kinda meta.
WampaLord
cal331, I have seen that ad. It's for Rolling Rock, and I'm not sure if they're serious or not. It seems pretty serious, but it's also a good marketing scheme to make us look for their ad in the Superbowl and remember it.

My favorite commercial? The one the NFL has done for the last couple years where all the players/owners sing "Tomorrow" and it ends with a screen saying "Tomorrow, we're all undefeated again." It's always hilarious, and the ending shot is the commissioner of the NFL and whatever coach he was talking to doing BACKFLIPS down a field. Cracks me up everytime.

I was so disappointed to hear this morning that Revlon, who's running their first-ever Superbowl ad this year, has chosen whiny-ass Sheryl Crow for it. Revlon, you are dead to me.

Well, I know that careerbuilders.com has been running ads saying that their commercials will be "evolving" as of February 4th. (They're the ones with the ads about a guy who works in an office full of monkeys.)

I just accidentally saw the Federline insurance / fast food commercial. It scares me that I think this, but this is probably the smartest thing he's ever done in his life. I mean, his prospects are probably pretty poor at this point, why not grab the last shred of his fame-whore life and make a buck?
greybear
Link to an article about Superbowl ads past; includes a link to this year's hottest [in somebody's opinion].

You know you've plummeted off the lower end of the dignity meter when you're merely collecting face time hoping to be picked for The Surreal Life 47 hosted by whichever Corey paid the most for the gig.

Well, the Greatest Super Bowl Commercials 2007 that's on right now had on from eTrade a while back, with two guys clapping as a chimp "dances" to "La Cucaracha." The tagline is "Well, we just wasted $2 million. What are you doing with your money?"

I think that comes close. :)
emma675
I adore any of the Budweiser spots with the Clydesdales in them but the one right after 9/11 made me bawl at a Superbowl party, which was really embarrassing.
It was the one featuring the horses pulling the Budweiser wagon through all kinds of weather for miles and miles until they finally ended up in front of the NY skyline, missing the twin towers, and the horses all knelt down in front of it in silence. I was a wreck.

I know what you mean. It does that to me, too.

Did anyone else see this show Friday night?CBS Airs Super Bowl Commercial Show It featured the most popular ads, with a vote-off between the Mean Joe Green Coca-Cola ad and the "Super Fan" (streaking sheep) ad. My question: what's happened to Daisy Fuentes? She co-hosted the show; time has not been kind to her. Topic: they did air snippets from the KFed ad, as well as another installment from GoDaddy.
Shelwood
Ugh, GoDaddy. They sell breast implants, right?
TheAngleMan
One of these days i will actually get to see a superbowl commercial.

Stupid Global. At the very least they shoud insist on higher quality commercials instead of the same crap you can see any other time.
Halloween Mojo
Aw man, I thought we were done with Jessica Simpson. At least she wasn't singing this time.

And that cheesy bites thing looks gross. I've had Pizza Hut's stuffed crust pizza before, and I took it back for a refund, it was that bad.
FrozenBlueberry
That weird ass Sierra Mist commercial with the whackalicious beard-hair was pretty awesome.
VeronicaNC
I liked the "Rock, Paper, Scissors," commercial for Bud Light. The Sierra Mist commercials have been awesome too.
ThatPoshGirl
Hated the auctioneer wedding commercial. Loved the Blockbuster commercial with the mouse.
FrozenBlueberry
Hardy har har I liked the Snickers one. I loved how the other guy just randomly looked up and started chomping on the other end of a candybar that was...already...being chomped on.
Halloween Mojo
Loved the Blockbuster commercial with the mouse.

Heh. Me too. How cute.

I liked the Budweiser auction one only because one of the brothers from The Amazing Race 7 is in it.

I thought the Bud one with Carlos Mencia was dumb and a wasted opportunity to do something funny with him.
Cherry Wire
Ugh, GoDaddy. They sell breast implants, right?

I thought they made soft-core porn?

My least favorite Super Bowl advertiser again this year has to be Bud Light, which just comes up with more Super-sized, unfunny versions of their usual meathead jokes. But the rest have been fun!
Bill C
Coke at least gets originality points for their Grand Theft Auto III-themed ad...
Halloween Mojo
That last Bud commercial was cute, with the white poochy who gets splashed, so he turns into a dalmatian and gets to ride on the wagon with the real dalmatian.

It didn't hurt that the white dog was adorable.

Oh, I forgot the Doritos commercials. The two that I've seen so far (the girl and the guy in the car lane, and the supermarket one) are really really stupid. But...I have to admit that watching the commercials makes me crave original recipe Doritos.

So even though they suck, they work. Damn advertisers!
Kiwi Kath
Hated the Snickers commercial - yuck. So far my favorite is the auctioneer wedding.
darkguardian
The Blockbuster ad with the mouse was by far my favorite so far. Probably one of my favorites in the last 3 years.

Also I liked the GM ad with the suicidal dream by the production line building machine.
Halloween Mojo
Ok, so I'm a Chevy girl, I always have and always will drive Chevy's. But fuck you, GM, parent of Chevy, for traumatizing my nine-year-old son.

He was extremely upset that the yellow robot was going to commit suicide by jumping off of the bridge. When the robot jumped, he nearly started crying. I was glad to tell him that robot was dreaming.

I know, the robot was an inanimate object, but it's GM's fault for making him so damn cute.
