Full Version: New Shimmer's a floorwax *and* a desert topping : Advertising Overkill

Of course, advertising is all over the place in general, but there's enough excess on TV alone to be worth discussing. Reruns are edited more and more to fit in more commercials; Ads overlap closing credits, including promos for other shows, which are also popping in at the bottom of the screen during the show that's on at the moment; and, on top of all that, they need to put in product placements inside the shows themselves.

I know the by-now old saying that TV exists to sell product, and programming is there to get viewers to watch commercials - but if that's true, then it's true of anything containing ads, including radio, the internet, sporting events, buses, etc. On TV, the commercials seem to be taking over at an alarming rate.

Just so long as we never see the day when it becomes necessary for the Commercials subforum on TwoP to be TwoP!

Ugh I know exactly what you mean. I hate it SO MUCH when a commercial comes on, then one commercial later, it comes on again! Or when products do back to back ads -- two different ads for the same product, shown in succession. Ugh. I hate commercials.

Last week they showed a 15 second yogurt commercial (already annoying) at least 6 times within a one-hour show. At one point they showed it twice within 5 minutes. Only the Mute button kept me from turning the TV off altogether. At least it gave me the illusion of some kind of control over what they were trying to drum into my brain. (Yogurt is good. Eat it! Eat it! )

My advertising peeve is commercials for upcoming movie releases. These ads start airing a month before a film is scheduled to open and the frequency of airings goes up and up as they get closer to its release date. It gets to the point where I wind up saying " Oh man, I can't wait until " Fun with Dick & Jane comes out ! " -- not because I want to see it, but because a movie doesn't get advertised once it opens !

This seems especially common during sports events. During the Olympics, I swear NBC showed the same 10 or 12 commercials for two weeks. During the NCAA tournament, I think CBS showed the same eight or 10, the most annoying being that stupid State Farm ad with Chris Wyle as the painted fan boy. Grrr.

Yeah, I hated that State Farm ad!! How annoying, seeing it played over and over and over again!!!

Hello, Victoria's Secret "Fashion Show!"

Speaking of, someone should really declare a moratorium on their use of the word "sexy." Every ad it's the word "sexy." Half their products have the word "sexy" in their names. And I bet I'd end up with alcohol poisoning if I decided to play a drinking game during the "fashion show" broadcast - I'd get drunk just by looking at this picture: The word "sexy" is displayed at least twice on the catwalk, and Justin Timberlake is probably singing "SexyBack." Which doesn't make sense, because VS had sexy all along. I know because they say it all the fucking time.

I always hated the word "sexy" - to me it sounded silly, even before I knew what sex was. "I'm Too Sexy" didn't help, either.

This kind of overkill advertizing is why the mere words "Ditech" and "Geico" are enough to drive me into a homicidal rage. I change the channel the instant either comes on, and I would never do business with either of these companies as long as I live.

It's not just VS...I've heard the word "sexy" used to describe way too many things. I make it a point to try and avoid at all costs anything that uses that word to describe their product. It is way out of hand.

It seemed like every time during report card season when I was in high school, they would overplay Sylvan Learning Center ads, in which parents would inquire about their kids' report cards, and they were bad, but that was before Sylvan! Well, in high school sometimes I didn't do so well, and since I was the only kid at home, I tried hiding my report card until my parents figured out that it should have come home a month ago. Sylvan almost blew my cover like 25 times. If I had a dime for how many times I'd change the channel, and my parents would go "Why'd you do that?" Oh, sigh. I hate you, Sylvan!

Nip/Tuck OWNS this thread. It makes me not want to watch any FX shows because they run the same promo during each and every commercial break.

Shouldn't it be "dessert" topping?
