Hey maybe you guys could help me out on the commercial for Saturn Aura midsize sedan. Its got a song that, after every 8 beats, I find myself going "whup-whup"..... and my husband said to me the other day

"what are you doing? you have the hiccups?"
And I said, "no that's how the song goes in the commercial....
he's like, "No it doesn't"...
and i'm like "omg.... why am I whup-whupping, it feels so natural with this song?!"

So i'm sure this song must be on the radio--but I can't even muster a single lyric, and definitely don't know the group. Can anyone save my sanity? (whup-whup)

Thank you, dunvegan948. I've been trying to figure out the song in that Bones ad for months. I agree that it was a great use of the song.

Usually, I hate classic songs in commercials, and even more when they're bad cover versions (the MSN commercial cover version of "Homeward Bound" a few years ago made me want to shoot someone), but the Target ad is surprisingly tolerable.

ETA: On that note, one I haven't seen mentioned is the use of "All You Need is Love" in the commercial for some credit card (could be AE) that has great rewards. I find it ironic, because if, in fact, all you need is love, why do I need their credit card and all of its great rewards?
Paxton

I actually really like it and could see listening to it as a whole song, "off" the commercial.
Stella MD
Which Target song are we talking about? Please tell me it's not the current "buy buy, credit-card debt, buy buy buy buy, Target" ditty that's out there now (Ok, it's actually "want it gotta have it gotta get it right now", so clearly the point isn't meant to be thinly disguised) with images of the mile-high tower of crap that you didn't need or desire until you went nuts at Target. Please tell me this isn't the commercial and song we're all lauding, 'cause then I'd have to weep softly for humanity.

No, we're talking about a nice cover of the Beatles' song Hello, Goodbye.

I was just coming to post about the striking contrast between the two Target commercials; it blows my mind they are from the same campaign, and created by the same people.
Two completely, polar opposite ads - one peaceful and relaxing, and a beautiful cover of a very hard act to follow (the original Hello, Goodbye); the other yappy, abrasive, and so very STFU it took several times of noticing it onscreen while my sound was muted, to figure out it was also a Target ad.

And I'd like to second that! I came to this thread to figure out that song, and lo and behold, here it is!

(And may I add that I'm glad it saved me from having to write out the whole "bom, de bom, de dang, de dang, diggy" chorus...)

TWoP is great :)

Because of this thread, I was inspired to search for the name of the song on that Pampers commercial with the ukelele and the person going "ooo", as I had been wondering for months. I haven't seen it mentioned, so here it is:
It's actually the introduction to a version of "Over the Rainbow" done by a Hawaiian guy named Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

Another one that's bothering me: Last week, TBS and TNT were running ads promoting the SAG awards, and they used a parody of some hip-hop/rap song I know I've heard before. It was also used in a Monk ad a while ago. This version contained the lines "They say this show SAG has........". Just wondering. Now off to go listen to Cobrastyle again.
Stella MD
It's the Shaft theme!

You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother--
(shut your mouth)
talkin' 'bout Shaft

That's a really lovely cover. He also did "What A Wonderful World" along with "Over the Rainbow" in the same song. I think the song is also used in a Cheerios (?) commercial. It's very sweet though. My friend used it at her wedding so I'll always have good memories associated with that song.
Halloween Mojo
I love the fact that Bones is using "The Diary of Jane" in their other set of ads.

Does anyone know which version of "I Fought the Law" is being used in the Reno 911 Movie previews? It's not The Clash's version and it's kind of quiet in the commercial so I can barely hear it. I know every punk band and their mamas have covered the song, but I can't tell who it is. It's not the Green Day version either, I don't think.
xaxat
Does anyone know who does the song used in the Second Coming ad from Nike? The google is not being kind to me on this one.

ETA, thank you makelikeatree! I think that's it. It won me over with the Voltron reference
makelikeatree
Is this the Nike Commercial you are talking about? Someone in the comments section says the song is called "The Second Coming" by Juelz Santana.

It might be Die Toten Hosen, which sounds awfully similar to the Clash's version but with slightly different voices, just like the one in the previews.

For reasons known only unto God, I have periodically been getting an old Bumblebee Tuna jingle from the Seventies stuck in my head for the past month:

"Yum yum Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna,
I love Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna..."

Help.
deadmallsanita
Help.

I can't help you for I have the Manwich jingle stuck in my head!

Oh mamma don't make me another meatloaf!
Forget the Mac n Cheese!
I want some fun piled on a bun
I want a Manwhich please!
ah-ah-ah!
I want a Manwhich please!

UGH. Shoot.me.now.
smittykins
But...didn't the last line of that jingle used to be "I want a Manwich meal?" (I also think the second line went, "I want a bigger deal.") Owing to the fact that their slogan at the time was "A sandwich is a sandwich but a Manwich is a meal."

Craving Manwiches now...*sigh*

Edited to close quotes.

Need a little help. I have the song from the latest M&M's commercial stuck in my head but I have no idea the name or the artist. Any help would be appreciated.

I know the first lines are

This is the day, your life will surely change

Anyway, I love the song and it has brought some new life to the M&M characters.

I'm remembering both verses are correct, either they played in separate commercials or both in an extended remix type commercial. And then--

....Oh doncha bring me no boloney!.....

reggiejax, The song title is "This Is The Day" and the band name is The, The.

Is anyone else as glad as me that All Spice is back to using their all familiar jingle? Love this new commercial!

I was just making a mix tape from iTunes and I needed some more songs to fill my CD. I don't really listen to the radio, so I needed some ideas, and their Top 100 songs list either sucks or I already have the songs that I like.

So I figured, hey, why not come in here for ideas? So I did. I think I got five songs that have been mentioned here (like the Geico commercial, and the Cheerios one with the Donovan song).

Of course, reading back through the thread, I realized that I am a complete cultural buffoon, because I always thought that the United ads were written for them. Who knew it was actually a famous composition? (Everyone except me, of course).

To anyone who answered a question about a song used in an ad, thanks for the info. It was kind of amusing, because when I would see an artist or song listed, I would look it up on iTunes, and almost every single time the song that I was looking for would be the first one with the largest relevance to my search.

Also, who knew that Peaches was so dirrrrty?

I've just turned 40, and to further my utter incredulity that I could actually be 40, I hear the Buzzcocks' classic punk song "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" on an AARP ad.

And I smiled.
makelikeatree
It's just so fitting, isn't it? The Buzzcocks and the AARP and Iggy is taking cruises.
scotti
Halloween Mojo, may I make another suggestion?

Million Miles Away by J. Ralph. My link is a re-recorded (and better) version of the song in VW's "Big Day" Jetta ad from 2001.

The ad is found here (click on reel, and it's the second ad).

Just a tremendous song.

Selling Caddies, too.

Aagh -- somebody has retrieved and posted the McDonald's jingle from 1971. And even for an old-time musical-comedy fan like me, it's packed with extra cheese. I remember my friends and I used to take turns making fun of the manager's impossibly-high-tenor "Tell me what does it meeeeeeeean?"

Now if someone would only find the "boy in cowboy hat moves to big city and makes new friends as McD's" one. Boy, that was so effective, it used to break my heart.
Halloween Mojo
I have no idea what product this ad was for, because I heard it while not looking at the television, but someone has recorded the worst possible cover version of "Melt With You" ever in the history of time.

It's some chick, and the tempo is way slow, and it suuuuucks.

Thanks for the tip scotti. I checked it out.

I completely agree. The first time I heard it, I was like "What is this sh*t and why is it on my tv?"

GMC Trucks.

I'm not sure if it counts in this thread, but I like that singing telegram in that cell phone commercial...

Happy Valentines Day, your boyfriend has something to say
You're not in his network and it's costing him a fortune
So he wants to break up today, he wants to break up today...

I get a chuckle out of that song every time.

"Yum yum Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna,

Damn, I remember that! Dear God, what have you done to me?

Oh I know. I heard Siouxsie and the Banshees in the Food Lion last week and stopped in my tracks. Time, Time, Time... see what's become of me. :)

KUNM, one of the NPR stations in Albuquerque, used to do something extremely evil during pledge week. They got all of the staff in the studio at once and they all sang the Bumblebee Tuna jingle over and over again for literally like an hour at a time, saying they wouldn't stop until they received X amount of pledges!

It is beyond hideous! It could even ruin the song for me if I get ambushed too many times out of reach of the mute button.
I seriously think William Hung could've done a better job.

I've always thought they should advertise the annual Muscular Dystrophy telethon well ahead of time. If they don't make their pledge goal, hold the telethon.
If they do make it, televise the Super Bowl. (and yes, I'm a huge football fan; that's why I see the earning potential of such a move. :D)

I'm looking for the name of a song that is used in a car commercial. It's a Canadian commercial (I think) and it features some guy sitting in his car, which appears to be moving. Another guy comes up next to him and asks him for his ticket, and it pulls back to show that the car is actually on a train. I love this commercial, and I especially love the song in the background. Does anyone know what it is? Or was it just generic music made up for the ad?
xaxat
NPR ran a story about the use of prominent rock tunes in advertisements featuring Randy Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. He makes more off of one ad campaign using "Taking Care of Business" than he did with all of the royalties he earned on it during the seventies.

He was also approached about using it for a toilet paper add. He had the good sense to turn them down.
Decormaven
Thanks, xaxat, for that link. Interesting that he named Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits as the last holdouts. Guess we'll know to saddle up the Four Horses when we hear their work commercialized.
TarHeelTeacher
The song title is "This Is The Day" and the band name is The, The.

I knew I knew that song! It the song at the end of Empire Records when they are all dancing on the roof. Now I'm going to have to watch the movie again and eat M&M's.

That's why I know that song! Lord, that has been driving me crazy since the first time I saw the commercial. I love that part of the movie. Renee looks happy, healthy, and remarkably unsquinty.

I liked the commercial with all the people singing all the songs about Chevrolets. I've been walking around singing, "No we're not the jet set. We're the Chevro-let set," since the Super Bowl. That might not be how the song goes, but that is how I'm singing it.
Decormaven
That Chevrolet song is a fresh take on "We're Not the Jet Set," made popular by George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

Why is Wendy's using 'Blister in the Sun' to peddle triple cheeseburgers?
Halloween Mojo
The commercial for something-or-other that uses a beautiful version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" is playing again.

I don't know nor care what they are peddling, I just like listening to it.
daisycat71
OMG, I just heard what sounded like munchkins singing Led Zeppelin's "The Immigrant Song" in an ad for the new Shrek movie.

What is the song in the new iPod commercial?

Same thing I asked myself back when they were using "Satisfaction" by Benny Benassi for their commercials.

"Push me and then just touch me 'til I can get my satisfaction."

Makes you wanna go and get a cheeseburger real bad, doesn't it?
Zambonie
Pete Ell-is Dodge, Long Beach Free-way, Lake-wood ex-it, Bell-flow-erAh yes, but I remember it slightly different: Pete Ellis Dodge, Long Beach Free-Way, Firestone Exit, South...Gate.

I remember it as
91 Freeway....Laaakewood Exit, Bellllllllllll-flower!

Ah, spring of '89!

As long as it's just a cheeseburger, maybe. Don't need any special sauce.

What gives Branson the right to have some hack murder the Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music"? I've been to Branson and enjoyed it, but this is almost unforgiveable.

Why is Wendy's using 'Blister in the Sun' to peddle triple cheeseburgers?

The funny thing about this commercial is that the first time I saw it, I was paying such close attention to the music (waiting for the vocals to start...which never did) that I completely zoned out on what the product was. It wasn't until I saw it a second time did I even realize it was for Wendy's!
