He's my favorite on the show. Thanks to him, I now tell people that they're wrong to the tune of Big Ben. :)
Anyone have a list of all the girl names that Cox has called J.D. over the years? I love how that came from John calling Zach girl names on the set. Sonds like a fun place to work.

I cannot believe that John C. McGinley has never won or even been nominated for an Emmy for his work as Dr. Cox. Unfathomable. He does a consistently awesome job and completely embodies the character.

This is probably my all-time favorite Dr. Cox moment. In fact, this whole episode (My Blind Date) is one of my favorite Dr. Cox episodes. I just love his help me to help you speech to Elliott, and I love it when we get to see his crazy amount of passion for his work, which was so evident in this episode. I also love it when he's mean, which is also represented quite well in this ep.

I would have to say my favorite moment of Dr. Cox is his Payback is a bitch dance. That had me cracking up. ITA that John C. McGinley does do an excellent job as Dr. Cox. He is one of my favorite characters, but I also love the Janitor.

I just rewatched 2.15 His Story and it's honestly one of the best episodes the show has ever done. The whole Carla/Turk proposal storyline is a big part of it, but most importantly the glimpse we get into Cox is just so real.
Hosting the party with no one there, but still being too arrogant to reach out to JD encapsulates his character perfectly. ("Well, tears-&-hugs, there, Katie. But, unless you want to come inside, here, and give one of the fellas a lap-dance, I'm afraid I gotta say Sayonara.")
As much as I love the humour (and irrational hatred of Hugh Jackman) that Johnny C. brings to the show, the reason Cox works so well is that he's not a collection of tics, and his over-the-top ego and ranting cover up a severely screwed-up person. And as much as I'm wary of Cox losing his edge, I'm still very pleased with the fact that they seem to be exploring this more in Season 5 (his sister, abusive dad, etc.).
Plus, the scenes with his shrink? Classic.

Oh most certainly. It's the especially springy hair which I love.
And his relationship with Jordan and the love he has for his son are two of the most awesome, awesome, awesome (Hee I'm sounding like Doug) facets of the show. Speaking of Doug - Cox's liasons with *whistle* Nervous Guy are always hilarious. I love how much tormenting other people makes him happy but at his core he is just a big softie - with a dash of crazy.

He makes this show for me. I nearly fell over and died when he came in from jogging with his shirt off (I can't remember the episode title, I think it was first season.) Spontaneous nosebleed.
But oh God what has happened to him in the past two episodes? Someone please help him control that beard. And when he was sitting on the roof in his sunchair it looked like he had lost most of that oh-so-yummy six pack I remembered so fondly.
Oh yah. Uhm, he's a really great actor too.

Awww, I like the beard. But I'm a fan of well-groomed facial hair in general, so maybe I'm not the one to say anything. :)
On the other hand, it does make him look older...and not really in a good way.

I completely agree. And the usual excuses don't apply. This isn't a sci-fi or teen-themed show or any genre that usually gets overlooked, it's a medical comedy. It's not buried away on cable or some fledgling netlet, it's on NBC.
McGinley is not only hilarious, but he can then spin on a dime and bring real heart to the show. He's the best comedic actor and the best actor in a comedy. And he's never even been nominated.
The only remaining conclusion is that the Emmy awards are a complete sham. I'm glad that last year they finally recognized both Zach Braff and the show as a whole with nominations, but missing John C McGinley year after year is a huge oversight.

We were flipping around the channels yesterday afternoon, and caught a bit of "Platoon". I was watching, and was like, "Hey, it's Dr. Cox"! Not being a fan of Vietnam movies, I hadn't realized he was in it! His character was very similar to Perry's... I think it's Johnny C's facial expressions that really do it!

Au contre mon frer. YMMV, of course, but I draw your attention to the man I always imagine is Dr. Cox's long lost non-identical twin: Dr. Greg House. Now that said, I don't think it's a good look for Perry. Maybe he's trying to make the connection more obvious. If he suddenly needs to use a cane, we'll know something's up.

My boyfriend and I watched seasons 1 & 2 over the course of a week. By the end of season 2, we were both suffering from raging Dr. Cox crushes.
I give a hearty word to everyone who has mentioned the way he has been overlooked by every major acting award-giving group. He is easily one of the most underrated actors on television today (and that includes the non-nominated castmembers on Arrested Development). I can't believe that anyone gave a better performance than his in "My Screw-up" the year it came out.

Bill Lawrence actually said something to that effect in his commentary on "His Story." He told John C. McGinley (and us viewers) that there was a clear reason for the name Perry (Percival): Dr. Cox is an Alpha Male, but yet he has this girly name. It's a cool contrast. Some would even say he is an Alpha Male because he's overcompensating for his name.
Another funny moment came in My Interpretation (2nd Season), when Jordan asks Dr. Cox to watch the baby for one hour, 3 days a week while she gets a massage. He asks her if she named him yet, and she said she was thinking about naming him after her father, Quinn or something like that (I can't remember the exact name, but I know it starts with a Q). Dr. Cox replies "I have an idea, why don't you name him a heterosexual name, like Jack?" To which Jordan replies, "You're right, Percival..." (emphasis on Percival).

Reading over the article, I noticed a line or two where John C. McGinley is talking about the need for a director (whether in theatre, television or movies) to have a strong vision - without that, he says, "it's a frickin' train wreck."
I choose to see this as an example of Elliot's favourite cussword taking root among the cast.

theobviouschild, even though this thread is small, I think you'd find a great deal of the viewers find Dr. Cox hot. Anyone who I've ever gotten to watch the show on a regular basis has walked away with a Coxcrush. As they should.
I've had a huge crush on him from Day1, even if I did see John C. McGinley in Intensity (my sister is the only person I know who doesn't have a Coxcrush. She did have a huge Edgler Vest (sp?) crush, and that is something that one
should seriously question. Liking someone old enough to be your dad? No problem there (It's Dr. Cox!). Liking a serial killer/rapist who was sick on so many levels? Very wrong. I know it was still John and he did do a great job in it but

Actually--if you remember--in season one Jordan runs into Dr. Cox for the first time in front of J.D. and she calls him Perry. J.D. looks at Dr. Cox and says, "Perry?" and Dr. Cox says something like "Not a word." I can't remember exactly what Coxy says, but it shows both J.D.'s realization that this man that has been calling him by girl names has a feminine name himself and that Dr. Cox has an issue with it.
I actually rented season one of Scrubs from Blockbuster on a whim one night. Dr. Cox sold me on it immediately. From his very first long-winded sarcastic monologue I was hooked. I'm sarcastic myself and can only dream of being able to spout something so funny and cruel at a moment's notice. :) I can't even memorize his monologues well enough to quote them at whim. Oh, how I wish I could.
Dr. Cox is my favorite character on Scrubs. I'll find myself growling at things now and then. ;)

I thought Perry was actually a nickname, and that his first name is actually Percival, (isn't there an episode where Jordan calls him that?) which might be even worse...

Yes, from 2.20, My Interpretation:
Dr. Cox: Waaaah! [to Jordan] Now, have you bothered to name this thing yet?
Jordan: I'm thinking of naming him after my father.
Dr. Cox: "Tax E. Vader"?
Jordan: Quinn.
Dr. Cox: What about a heterosexual name, like Jack?
Jordan: You're right, Percival, "Quinn" is a foofy name.

Yeah, Perry's just short for Percival, but that's still a feminine name so my point still stands. I don't believe J.D. ever hears of "Percival" though.

For what it's worth, I never thought of "Perry" as feminine. I guess I associate it with the comic book character "Perry White" and also a male acquaintance of mine, not to mention that it sounds like "Harry" or "Terry". "Percival" isn't feminine either, but it is foofy... foofier than "Perry" in my opinion.

I posted this a while ago on this thread--Bill Lawrence said in one of the DVD commentaries (I'm pretty sure it was in "His Story" because he was talking to Johnny C) that he purposely gave Dr. Cox the first name Perry (short for Percival) because it's supposed to contrast with his Alpha Male personality. He even said that Dr. Cox might be overcompensating for his name and that's why he's such an Alpha Male.
