Because he, above all else, deserves one.
Glark
You have admire a man with an army of stuffed squirrels -- I mean that!
bookcat
He traded away the squirrel army, though. Just to help out Carla. Which means he's awesome nice, to boot.
RainIsBeautiful
I love Janitor so much, I bought "Mean Girls" on DVD just to support Neil Flynn's career. (I hope it worked!) One of my favorite tricks he played on JD was the blue paint hands all over the hospital.

His budding friendship with Dr. Cox is going to be awesome, too. Love!

(I can't seem to say "love" enough in our new forum!)
LilJen
Yeah, it's been said before, but: I want a castle like the palace of the King of Janitoria!!!
MelfrmMd
In an episode, it's shown in one of the janitorial closets a poster size picture of JD with "HIM!" scrawled on it. I believe it was the one where the Janitor is running for shop steward or something, and loses to the little person janitor. Cracks me up every time.

From "My Butterfly" when Elliot needs to find the pink stuffed doggy and the janitor helps/doesn't helps in the two realities.

The Janitor truly does rule. Was just laughing my ass off at season three episode two where J.D realises the Janitor is afraid of Carla and "uses it to his advantage." Neil Flynn's delivery of "Mentiroso!" (LIAR!) had me in hysterics. But I have to say the squirrel army scared me a little.
jcpdiesel21
Man, I love Janitor. There are so many different facets of his personality that come out during the course of this show. Neil Flynn does a great job of playing this character.
ScotLot
I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe at an eppy I say today where the Janitor persuades Kelso (by "waxing your world") into getting him a new uniform and then looks so damn pretty in it that no-one respects him. This guy rocks.

My purchase of Major League on DVD may have helped to. He's one of the guys at the beginning that comments on how bad they are and we see him in shots of the bar everyone is in watching the game(s).

Eeek. Potentially Unpopular Opinion Time:

There isn't a character I dislike in Scrubs-verse, don't get me wrong...but Janitor isn't what he used to be to me anymore. Neil Flynn is fantastic, of course, but I think Janitor could be used a bit more sparingly (on screen no more than Kelso, perhaps along the same lines as Ted) and he would seem a lot more fresh. Just me?
guppiechic
Nah, I don't think that that is an unpopular opinion. I used to love the Janitor, and now, meh. Just like I love The Todd, but I think that if he were in every ep, he would get a little old too.
OverTheTop
I just have to say it:

DR. Ján Itor !! hehe
kezwick
Janitor is awesome!!! I loved the episode (don't know what it's called) when he convinces Kelso that he is losing his memory. So cute and diabolical!!!

Gotta love the evil!
guppiechic
Keys. To everything.
SacredFart
Why is your Lake Titticacca not filled with boobs and poop?
kezwick
I think Janitor is just plain brilliant. And his crush on Elliot, or 'Blonde Doctor' made me tear up is was so cute!!!
jcpdiesel21
What happened with Janitor's crush on Elliot? Did he just lose interest? I don't remember there being an explanation after their "date" last season.
skillzdatkillz
jcp, if I recollect correctly, Elliot found out about it and Janitor told her the truth about "setting up a fake date". But Elliot didn't make a big issue out of it, just told him not to do it again. But he actually did try on another ep later on hehe (he took an old lady from the mall to woo Elliot), but she said "I thought we went over this Janitor, it's not happening!"
RainIsBeautiful
Best. Neil Flynn screencap. EVER. Check it out, check it out!

ETA: Before anyone asks, that's from the pilot of Doogie Howser, which is now in my Netflix queue. This is gonna be awesome.
jcpdiesel21
RainIsBeautiful, that is one fantastic screencap! I think I may need to put that show on my Netflix queue as well.

TV Guide says that we are getting an episode from the Janitor's point of view, entitled "His Story III" on April 18th. I am so excited to get an episode from Janitor's point of view!
PoisonRain
I loved his baby blue uniform.

Neil does an amazing delivery with whatever he's given. The squirrel army though? I'm really glad that was dropped. I really liked that he liked blonde doctor. It was cute how he'd do stuff to impress her, do stuff to help her, go to great lengths for her, etc. But I'm pretty sure if they drew it out, it would get old fast and just kind of weird. Janitor is comic relief, not part of the drama.

And I like calling him Janitor, as if that's his name. It's mentioned in season one commentary that if we ever find out Janitor's name it means the show is over. So let's hope we don't find out his name any time soon. :)
RainIsBeautiful
I can just see them having a Sex & The City-style finale -- JD walking away from the hospital, and his phone rings...the caller ID says "Max" (or whatever they decide Janitor's real name is), and JD doesn't answer. He merely shakes his head and sighs, "Janitor". Heh.

ETA, because no one else has posted today!

I got the Doogie Howser, M.D. pilot from Netflix this afternoon. Neil Flynn was Policeman #1, and thankfully, was at the end of the first scene. I used to love this show, but I couldn't bring myself to watch more than an episode and a half. Now, if Policeman #1 had made more appearances, maybe. ;)

And yes, he was rockin' the 'stache. I'd love to see Janitor grow one! *snerk*

Oh, here's the Janitor thread. From my comments on "His Story III":
I know the goings-on at Sacred Heart are surreal at times, but almost everybody in the cast is fairly grounded in the real world. J.D., Turk, Carla, Elliot, Cox, Kelso, and the rest all went to med school or nursing school, survived their internship, struggle with their love lives or impending parenthood, and generally live their lives the way us normal folk do.

The Janitor is different. First of all, he has no name. He has no past. Everything we've learned about him previously is (to put it mildly) in dispute. He's iconic. He embodies the slightly weird environment of Sacred Heart and Scrubs. For the most part, Bill Lawrence and the writers have handled him perfectly: he's not so much a character in the sitcom, but a meta-character, able to slip in and out of the plotline and comment on the characters without revealing anything about himself.

(Somebody on the old Scrubs thread once said that the Janitor was an unemployed actor named Neil Flynn impersonating a hospital janitor, and his employment at Sacred Heart was a gigantic acting exercise. I love that idea.)

Exploring the Janitor's sense of inadequacy doesn't feel right to me because I think--as a "meta-character"--he has more power than anybody at the Hospital could possibly suspect. When the touching finale played out and the Janitor was walking down the hall, I expected him to turn around, face the camera, and sneer: "You BOUGHT all that?"

And then he'd smile, secure in his secret knowledge, and continue sweeping.

Azamiryou added:
In some ways, I agree with this. But this show is not one to shun experiments, and they've already had episodes where other main characters get passed the voiceover baton. Exploring the perspective of a meta-character is rather interesting. And, frankly, I think (much like the squirrel army) this look into the janitor raises more questions than it answers. Interesting also to note that as much as he wanted to make a difference in the hospital, that's not why he was talking to the paralyzed patient. That was out of boredom and loneliness.

And finally, sandman:
I hadn't considered the idea of Janitor as meta-character before, but I like it. I like the idea of him as a kind of Greek chorus, with mop. It makes sense of the idea that not only does JD not know his name beyond "Janitor", but no one else does either, because his identity is generic, rather than specific. (What do we do, then, with his tendency to consider others in much the same iconic way - as Blond Doctor, Scary Nurse Wife, etc.?)

One more fascinating tidbit: Bill Lawrence said if the series had been cancelled after S1, The Janitor would have been revealed as a figment of J.D.'s imagination.

So what do you think, folks? What is the Janitor's role in the narrative?
sometimes
but the idea of the Janitor nursing a longstanding feeling of inadequacy just didn't ring true.

I don't know about that. The guy is a jerk to almost everyone. Why? There has to be some reason for it. No one is a jerk just to be a jerk. His bizarre childhood, perhaps (flashbacks which are possibly in JD's mind). It makes sense to me that someone with feelings of inadequacy would act out by being a jerk all the time. Maybe even to prove himself right. I've known tons of people like that. I like when the characters have some kind of, I dunno, psychoanalytic development to them? Is that the word I'm looking for? It makes them more real, more relatable, and less like a cartoon, which gets me more involved in the show.

I've mentioned elsewhere that one of the things I appreciate about this show is that the characters are three dimensional. We've all seen the soft sides of otherwise tough characters, like Cox and Kelso. Why not Janitor?

That being said, the meta-character idea is intriguing. But in the end, this show is grounded in reality. Much of the absurdity takes place in JD's mind. I'm not saying absurd things don't happen at Sacred Heart, but I don't think the Greek chorus idea - while a good one - fits in with the show.
clarkins
After he reveals to whoever it was that he was the cop in "The Fugitive" , I figured we'd get some story about drugs or alcohol causing his acting downfall and ending up here at Sacred Heart.
Flying Penguin
Janitor's facial expression in response to The Todd's answer to "What the hell are you?" was so Chandler Bing. Loved it.
skillzdatkillz
When Janitor said to Turk "don't worry I practised on four mop heads already" and then they showed all four mops had the head broken off, I couldn't stop laughing! I love those simple visual gags.
sometimes
This looks terrible but I couldn't help thinking of our own beloved Janitor when I saw it.

I don't necesarily see the Janitor as being a jerk all the time, he has his moments (alot of them for/with blonde doctor) where he is very sweet and helpful. Plus it must suck going to Harvard and then ending up a janitor, anyone would be kind of jerkish after that.
sometimes
Having to go through Cambridge all the time I must say, some Harvard students are born jerks. At least he learned some discipline in the Janitor branch of the armed forces.

And how do you get to an Ivy League school and not learn how to cross the street? COME ON!

edited because I clearly never went to an Ivy League school and cannot spell
Azamiryou

What's wrong with being a janitor? -:(

"I shouldn't be mopping here, cause this is a carpet"

Splotch, splotch, splotch. Heh.

I thought of Janitor yesterday while I was at work and just needed to share. I work for a hospital and we have an employee who absolutely never smiles. I've never seen him speak. I have no idea what his name is. And frankly, he scares the hell out of me. He has this dead, cold stare that creeps me out. (Although I go out of my way to smile at him and give a perky 'Hi!' every time I see him just to piss him off. I like to think that he secretly starts laughing after I do that.) Anyway, I realized yesterday that there really are some pretty quirky people out there like Janitor. Mine happens to be...a janitor...at a hospital.

And now I'm thinking that if I ever see him fixing something, I'll have to say, "Penny stuck in there?"

Sign for the Janitor

I saw this and wondered if the Janitor has this in his house somewhere. :)

I am so delightfully confused.

There is one word for pretending like mopping is like a bear attack, and it is BWAH! That was hilarious, and insane, and janitory.

The mop attack picture however, was scary. Ghost mop.
Azamiryou
Whoa.

I hadn't noticed this before, but the Scrubs transcripts are on a web site called My Own Personal 'Net Thing, or.... MOPNT.

Which came first, mopnt.com or the Janitor saying, "mopn't"? Clever reference or shout-out? Or is it just a bizarre coincidence?
Bb
Sorry I can't find the link right now, but she purposely chose words that would create MOPNT.
Azamiryou
Thanks. Guess that makes it a "clever reference" - and a slow Azamiryou.

Here’s the way I see it. Scrubs is about the education of J.D. (and to a lesser extent, Turk and Elliot). Every year, they learn more about medicine. They become better at handling the patients and the staff. They also grow personally, and in their relationships. J.D. passes along the lessons he’s learned in voiceover.

But – there’s something totally random lurking in the halls of the hospital. It’ll usually mess with you, although sometimes it will be helpful, and once in a rare while you’ll be able to outwit it. It seems to prey on younger doctors; the more experienced doctors try to avoid it. But no hospital worker can avoid it completely. No matter how much J.D. learns, he will never, ever be able to understand it, because it doesn't follow any rules but its own.

It is a complete mystery, unknowable and unnamable. The only mystery that it can’t solve is how The Todd swings.
dcalley
Huh. If I knew this before, I forgot.

I saw a dog carrier in someone's yard and I immediatly thought of the Janitor's "Baby Cage".
GoldfishGirl42
Bumped for vjd42.
Turcote
Sorry, I accidently posted this first in the other Janitor thread...My bad.

Okay, can anyone verify this:

I heard that, in the episode where everyone's parents (including the Janitor's) show up, that in one scene, in the waaaaaay off background, the Janitor and his dad can be seen doing a dance with the mops. Supposedly, it's very hard to catch, but it's there.

Has anyone else heard of this?
