What? Someone had to do it and that someone had to be me.

Simon loves Mal. Discuss.
Fig in Mouth
Am I the only Firefly fan who really never saw much HoYay! going on? It seems like a lot of people who have watched the show have picked up on it.
cutecouple
I've been collecting fan vids for a bit (hmmm, need a fan art thread). Believe me, many, many people see the HoYay!. A lingering look, a subtle touch - it's not hard to make a Firefly vid that supports a specific relationship.
chunkyrice13
The best part about rewatching "the message" with people: I get to use my favorite joke: "It's cool, this isn't the first time Simon has been slammed up against the wall by a naked dude."
tinangel
I've always thought Kaylee seemed a tad bi-curious. Which explains why she likes pretty, pretty Simon so much...
Suburbia
Hm, Mal/Jayne seems more likely than Mal/Simon.

Mal/Jayne's just plain fun to think about.
Untitled
Jayne IS HoYay!

hehehe
tita
I know everyone sees something different, but Mal and Simon are totally hot for each other.
I think especially of that scene in the movie where they're all assembled in the mess, discussing how River is more dangerous than they realized. When Simon mentions the 'safe word', Mal realizes he obviously knew in advance that River could go batshit at any time, and he leans in to Simon so close that Simon backs right up into the table. Mal stares him down for what seems like an eternity, and I swear they're both imagining kissing the other. There are sparks, people, I swear it!

Sure she is, she seemed to think Inara and her female client were a pretty couple.
JerseyGirl291
I thinkk there is the most evidence for Mal/Simon within the series, although I like Jayne/Simon best. The conversations at the end of "Serenity" and "Safe" really seem like there could possibly be something going on. Mal didn't really coming back for Simon because he is part of the crew...
chunkyrice13
I like Jayne/Simon the most, fanfiction-wise, because it's entertaining. But I think Mal/Simon is practically cannon. It makes so much sense.
shamoogity
I see tonnes of Hoyay in the show and I get a real kick out of it, but somehow I have no interest in reading any slash pairings. I think I much prefer them as subtext. It's strange that in this fandom one can be in the minority for preferring canon pairings.

My favourite instance is probably in Jaynestown when Mal says something about Simon being soft and pasty all over. All over! The writers just loved to tease us.
skripka2
Oh my God, the Table Scene, hereafter referred to as OMGTTS.

I know that not everyone sees the hoYay, but man. In what 'verse isn't Mal/Simon the next best thing to canon? (says the unrepentant slasher and rpser)

I like this thread. Can I live here, Q? Please?

Nope, add me to the list. But I never see much HoYay! in anything so I could be missing the totally obvious...

Hee! I think Kaylee just like pretty things. So once she finally realizes that Simon loves Mal, she'll just go get her hair brushed by Inara and everything will be all better.

I love that there is a whole lot of subtext for Mal/Jayne, Mal/Simon, and Simon/Jayne. I think a lot of Jayne's initial issues with Simon had to do with jealousy that Simon was taking away Mal's attention from Jayne. I suppose if you wanted to do, you could see the resulting tension as more of a sibling rivalry, but it's way more fun to see it as sexual tension.

Mal/Simon will always be favorite though simply because their relationship was just so intense. There were a lot of fun little flirty type moments, but I also just loved how fascinated the two of them seemed with each other. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with their relationship on the show. And though I enjoyed the movie, I was kind of sad that Mal and Simon's relationship in the movie had taken a step backwards. On the show, I think they were beginning to push each other in very interesting directions and though I really don't think they were ever going to have an actual sexual relationsip on the show, I think they were headed towards something very unique and amazing with lots of punching and yelling, but also a truly complex and interesting friendship.

And now I'm all sad.

(and of course you can live here Skrippy - Mi perverted casa es tu perverted casa.)

I've already unpacked my bags, skripka2. I'm lounging around in Kaylee's room trying to get her to see that Mal's the one for Simon.
skripka2
And River's the only one for her? :)

Nathan kissing Jonathan Woodward.
stoutheartedmin
As long as someone's manhandling Simon, I'm a happy fangirl. :-)
queenb
Oh Nathan. You adorable whore.

Have I seen that picture before?
JerseyGirl291
Oh my God, the Table Scene, hereafter referred to as OMGTTS.

Now I'm feeling all ignorant, but what episode is this in?
queenb
The table scene is in the movie. It's when Mal pushes Simon on a table and then they have lots of sex. Well, the second part of that sentence possibly didn't happen, but in my heart in did, so that's really all that matters.

I just realized I forgot the comma in 'Homoeroticism, yay!' I lose at life :(
chunkyrice13
This way it's more like a command. I think it works.
dimples1
Oh Nathan. You adorable whore.

Have I seen that picture before?

I know I haven't seen that photo at all. Was that from a fan convention? I must say that Jonathan's the whore. He'll kiss anybody and I love him for it. ;-)
tita
Oh Nathan. You adorable whore.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we've found ourselves a title for the Nathan Fillion thread!
shamoogity
If you liked that picture of Nathan and Jonathan kissing, but you would prefer enough shots to make a flipbook, see this lovely lj post of pretty much all celebrity boykissing ever.

[OT]I finally get why so many people think all those LoTR actors are gay. They sure do make out a lot. [/OT]
sf fan
As much as I love OMGTTS, skrippy, I have to say the scene that really gets me in the movie is the one where Mal's got River locked in the cupboard and he and Simon are all done yelling at each other over it and Simon stands really close to Mal, looks up at him from under his eyelashes, and says very softly, "Can I see her now?"

And Mal just steps out of the way.

That scene is pure sex the way they play it.

*gets out the comfy chair and cushions* Ahhh, it's good to be home.
skripka2
Dude. 90% of Simon's and Mal's interactions are pure sex. They just can't help it. *passes out cocoa*
chunkyrice13
Mhm. So among those of us who see the Mal/Simon subtext, the question for me is: is there something going on, or is it all just unspoken simmering tension?

Myself, I think it's mostly subtext, or else I have trouble justifying Simon's behavior towards Kaylee. I like the theory that Simon was gay in his old life, and now he's trying to make a fresh start, for River's sake. Or something.
kirstenj2076
The biggest subtexty ship I see on FF is definatly Kaylee/Inara, there is just waaaay to many scenes with them that really jump out at me. The hairbrushing scene from "The Train Job" I think was all kinds of HoYay-riffic.
skripka2
I just like thinking that they're all bi. Or that labels don't exist in 2517, and it's no big deal.

Sex for all!
chunkyrice13
There are labels, at least to some extent: when they're at that brothel Mal is asked if he's "sly" or somesuch when he doesn't seem interested in the ladies. But just because those labels still exist doesn't mean the categories couldn't be flexible.
queenb
Also, when asked if he's sly, Mal says he leans towards women which really isn't a no and suggests that he could easily be pushed in the other direction by persuasive, pretty doctors.

And on the subject of whether something was actually going on between Simon and Mal during the show, I say mostly no, but I am totally convinced that Mal and Simon had sex before the episode Safe. To me, both Mal and Simon's actions in that episode make way, way more sense.
mollyann
Didn't you write, like, an entire thesis proving that theory, queenb? You probably don't have it anymore, but hey, it convinced me.
Unusual Suspect
Oh Nathan. You adorable whore.

I just wish the picture went a little lower, I'd swear Jonathon's grabbing Nathan's ass.
enness2000
I'd actually say that Firefly ranks 3rd of Whedonverse shows in terms of HoYay (although, objectively, that's still pretty damn hoyayriffic), but there's still some to be eked out. I've never found Mal that attractive (*ducks in preparation for the violent abuse guaranteed by this comment*) so I tend to ship Simon/Jayne, on the grounds that Jayne seems like he'd have sex with anything given the right circumstances and Simon is very clearly gay. (Session 416 and the ending of the BDM not-withstanding)
skripka2
For a long time there, you couldn't read fic for Firefly without coming across slash every second or third click. Now, of course, it's Jayne/River that's taken over that popularity. (notwithstanding the fact that I wrote one J/R fic, just. *shudder*)

I'm all about the Simon/Mal. Although, Simon/Jayne and Jayne/Mal work for me, as well. Of course, I don't have too much problem with Simon/Inara. Or the River/Kaylee, or the Kaylee/Inara. And I've read convincing Saffron/Mal and Saffron/Simon.

Um. I may be 'shipping whore.

Book/Jayne, anyone?
sf fan
Simon/Mal. Although, Simon/Jayne and Jayne/Mal

I think I wrote that. those. them. *grin*

But you forgot the best one: Simon/Jayne/Mal.
queenb
Mmm Simon/Jayne/Mal... of course the proper order should be Simon/Mal/Jayne. Because Simon belongs on top and Jayne always belongs on the bottom... in my world at least.

And yes, Molly I might possibly have written a thesis like thing on Simon/Mal during Safe, but I didn't want to scare the new people so I didn't mention it :)

Book/Jayne is a beautiful thing. Theirloveissoallaboutthebibleandweightlifting.

If we're ranking Whedon show on the hoyay scale, I'd probably have Angel and Firefly tied for the lead and Buffy in second. I never really saw all that much hoyay on Buffy. I never saw the Spike/Xander (though I did see Angel/Xander). Faith brough some hoyay. So did the initiative. And Angelus too, but in my mind the Buffy hoyay never compared to the Angel lovefest (Angel/Spike. Angel/Wes, Angel/Lindsey, Wes/Gunn) or all the Simon/Mal/Jayne of Firefly.

If you'd be willing to call it, "Oh my God, the incredible Table Scene" (or "incomparable"), we could have OMGTITS.

'cause I'm 12.
antelogi
Mal/Simon was definitely just UST, because I doubt that if they made sweet sweet violent love, Mal would hide it from the crew. Or if Simon asked him to keep it secret, he'd at least make lots of thinly veiled comments about it during dinner.

The most HoYay!riffic couple in my opinion, was Mal/Jayne. I mean, admit it Jayne, it wasn't the money that prevented you from turning on the cap'n during the pilot. It was the sex.
Suburbia

I just choked on a Dorito... and now I can't stop giggling. Curse you, QueenB.

Wasn't it decided once that Simon needs to be the buffer between Mal and Jayne? The way I see it, someone is going to get seriously injured if Mal and Jayne are too close together.
sf fan
Oh, yes. Simon definitely has to be the buffer. If that's what we're calling it these days...
skripka2
Buffer, filling... who cares, it's hot.

Too bad Wash was married. Something about him being married to Zoe (who could kick anyone's ass) severely limited the WashYay.
chunkyrice13
That's funny. Now that I think about it, slashing Wash has never crossed my mind. I think it's partly because he so seldom fights with anyone, getting way too close while yelling.

Exception: that torture scene, which may be the best blend of funny/emotional/hot/scary I have every seen.
vampirefan
Sf, thanks for pointing out that these forums had come back to life. I really wish some of the original, extremely interesting conversations were still available to read, but I can't really complain.

We'll just have to analize every second of the HoYay all over again!

So, on topic. In Serenity (the movie), when Simon and River were leaving the ship and Kaylee was instructing Simon on what to and not to do, despite there being a ton of room in the doorway, Mall had to force his way between Simon and Kaylee 'cause he was totally upset that they were standing so close together.
Kris_AB
Wasn't it decided once that Simon needs to be the buffer between Mal and Jayne?

If Simon indeed needs to be the buffer/filling (I favor "monkey in the middle") and it's a train-style three-way, who's at the far receiving end, Mal or Jayne? 'Cause it's funny either way. Though I do think it's a bit of a cliche having Simon playing bottom at all, so maybe it should go
Simon --> Mal --> Jayne -->

(are the arrows too crass?)

Or would it be Mal and Jayne DP-ing Simon instead? (ow)

I swear I'd never thought about it much beyond "hot" until this thread came along.
Vercingetorix

I'd never thought about it, but now that I do, it wouldn't take much to come up with a Zoe/Kaylee d/s scene that, while a little obvious, would keep Jayne in his bunk for life.

Mwahahahaha!

To steal a theme from Star Trek: IDIC (Infinite diversity in infinite combinations), my dear.

Tenth Muse wrote one of those. Her website requires a password, but it's worth joining the yahoo groups she has listed because of the sheer amount of fanfic she's written.
