I'm terribly excited about this show. So many actors I like!

Me too! I like the premise, but I'm mostly excited because I get so many of my favorite ladies all at once.
I'm so happy TWoP picked up the show - it seems perfectly recappable.

I nearly prayed TWoP would pick this show up... is that terribly sacrilegious?
As one without HBO (heck, without Basic Cable), this is the only way I can get my fix (and keep myself busy between Amazing Race recaps at work. Heh.)

Do we have a recapper yet?

Co-starring another great Canadian actor, Shawn Doyle. You may remember him from "24" season 4 as the agent who had taken over for Jack Bauer and was subsequently killed in eps. 2. He's hot and he's good.

I'm also excited that TWoP is recapping the show. I don't get HBO anymore (sigh, stupid money) but, being from Utah and LDS, am insanely interested to see what the show is going to do with the subject matter. Unlike a lot of people I know (who even know about it), I'm looking forward to it.
Speaking of which, any other Utahns out there watching?

I am, BatFantastic. In fact, I live in Sandy so I guess the Hendricksons are my new neighbors.
Actually, when I say I'm watching what I really mean is that I'm going to read all the recaps. But, you know. Close enough.

If our recapper sees this, I would like to know if YOU decide you which shows you recap, and if so, why did you choose this particular one. Did you see a preview?
I am very interested in seeing this show from the beginning, since I miss old favorites like Dead Like Me and Six Feet Under and I am thinking this will be that same sort of dark humor.
Just curious. Thanks.

Hi everyone. I, too, am really excited for this show. Mostly because of the fantastic cast and the fascinating premise, but also because I'm sick and tired of Grey's Anatomy. Gave that show a shot and while it was alright, I'll happily substitute it with a quality HBO original series.

Yay! I was hoping TWoP would pick Big Love up! Such an interesting concept, and thankfully this show is on HBO. Having a religious and controversial setting, it likely won't face the same ratings dangers that The Book of Daniel did. I'm looking forward to it!

Greeting everyone.
I find I am only interested in the show due to the Lead actor and Actresses. The subject matter seems interesting. I fear it is too easy to turn the subject matter into a train wreck of a show. I hope my fears prove groundless.

Hi all! Nice to meet you, don't know if I'll be here very long.
If you could ask me to name ten actors that I hate and think are so noticeably terrible that it is one of the great mysteries of life why their careers approach anything close to a modicum of success, Bill Paxton, Chloe Sevigny and Jeanne Tripplehorn would be on that list of ten.
So why am I just so gosh darn curious to watch this show? Three wrongs + Ginnifer Goodwin do not make a right. Am I that interested in polygamy?
I think I just miss SFU so much that if there is a drama about a dysfunctional family with a disturbing gimmick airing on HBO, then I have to watch it.

Hey all. I am LDS and really looking forward to this show. Mostly for the in-jokes and references like "Oh my heck." I have never been to Utah though, so some of them may go over my head.
And I love the idea that this family's lifestyle is too extreme for the "mainstream church" yet too conservative for the cult the dad used to be in, so they have nowhere they fit. I can see this being relatable to many viewers.
I love Veronica Mars and am also excited to see so many casting crossovers. Yay!

I don't mind Bill Paxton or Jeanne Tripplehorn so much, but Chloe Sevigny must have the worst PR person on the planet. Every interview with her that I read I find her more and more unlikeable. The best I've seen so far is how she admitted to still, to this day switching tags at a Salvation Army to pay a cheaper price for clothes. If she'd admitted doing that as a teenager, that could be written off as youthful stupidity, but she said very plainly that she still does it regularly. How nice.

Hi all. I've been interested in seeing this show since I heard Amanda Seyfried was going to be in it. (Fangirl squee: I finally got her autograph last week when I went home for spring break and found that the nice lady that I met in December when I saw Seyfried's film Nine Lives {directed by Rodrigo Garcia, just like Big Love} in her hometown {aka where I'm going to college} indeed kept her promise to me and got me Seyfried's autograph.)
Very pleased that I know more of the cast as well through my intense love for Veronica Mars (3 others not including Amanda that I know of) and many other things I have seen throughout the years.

Hi, everyone!
I'm glad to see forum activity for this show, and am very much looking forward to tomorrow night's inaugural episode.
(And yes, I adore the banner art too.)
Judfer, how a recapper and a show get together is one of those behind-the-scenes things best left to one of the head programmers here to explain -- I'd suggest asking them via e-mail. For what it's worth, one of the reasons I'm looking forward to recapping this is because I'm curious to see exactly how well-rounded the depiction of
polygyny will be here. (NB: I'm not using "polygamy" yet, as that specifically refers to having more than one spouse, and until the show depicts someone with multiple husbands and/or multiple husbands and wives ...)

Heh. I hear what you're saying
IseutLaBrune. Although I keep thinking that Tripplehorn has potential. I have this weird love for Ginnifer Goodwin, and there's never been an HBO series that I didn't dig, so I'm super excited about this show.
I'll also be curious to see how the LDS TWoPpers feel about how the subject matter is handled. I haven't seen or heard any background on how the show did their research etc., so it'll be interesting for me.
Is it March 12 yet?

You should see her in
Nine Lives. Definitely not the sexpot there. I hear she actually didn't really like her part in the film, how she looked. But I did, of course I like anything she's in so I might not be the best judge.

Hey everyone. I cannot wait to see this show just because the premise is so unusual and polygamy has facinated me for a long time. I haven't had anything decent to snark on since tptb here locked the "16 kids and pregnant" thread. Bring on the religious weirdness..

Hello, all! I'm also excited for this show because of its premise (I don't think I've ever encountered a show centered on polygamy) and the cast, although I'm not exactly fond of Chloe Sevigny. I'm glad it was picked up by TWoP, so now I also have the recaps to look forward to.

I'll also be watching because I love the idea that HBO is doing a series about nontraditional marriage with a nonjudgmental approach, rather than doing a miniseries or movie of the week dropping anvils that anything besides serial monogamy is OMG!evil and must be stopped. Hell, I'd love to see them do a series about group marriage, which is more my preference, but this series will do nicely. Also, I've loved Paxton ever since Aliens, and I think his ability to do both bland and quirky makes him ideal for this role.

I'm interested to see if this show will be a total trainwreck or something brilliant, since the only actor I'm really rooting for on this show is Amanda "Lily Kane" Seyfried. I get the feeling it'll be somewhere in the middle.

I'm torn! But I think I'll give it a shot, since Sobell is recapping. Amanda Seyfreid has come a long way since All My Children. I just wonder if they'll do the concept justice. The whole idea squicks me out, kinda. Especially with that recently aired docu. on the way they kick the teen boys out so that the old men have more young teen girls to marry and fuck. So gross.

Hello! I'm here because of the cast; whatever you may say about Chloe Sevigny as a person - and I've haven't read much on her, except a piece where she said she hated making Palmetto because Woody Harrelson was the only one who treated her like a human being - I think she's very talented. Boys Don't Cry wouldn't have been nearly as affecting, IMHO, without her performance.
Anyway, I like what I saw so far. Wonder how Sobell feels about going from a show that fetishizes violence to one that does the same for sex?
Also, it's to see people I know from other forums here (Hi Edwin, Maxy, and Moony!).

Just wanted to say HI to everybody. I've been in mourning since my beloved SFU went to the big series ending in the sky.
I hang around ER, The Closer, L&O and Sopranos boards, mostly.
This show has promise, I think.

Hi, I'm here due to HBO's history of quality TV and I liked the show enough the first time to keep watching.
One of my cousins (on the Jewish side of my family) married a Mormon and converted. I went to the wedding in Idaho (a few weeks after Sept 11, 2001 actually), and her whole family and all the other people I met out there were so unfailingly nice, normal and happy. My point is that I'm not for a second mistaking the characters that appear on this show as typical or average Mormons. I hope that even if I hadn't had direct contact with Mormons I could have figured that out. It's just TV, entertaining distraction, but not reality.

Hi Everyone!
I rarely visit MeetMarket, but I am for some reason totally intrigued by this show. I think the interest stems from my desire to understand what I inherently dislike. This past fall someone totally blew my mind when they argued that skinheads were not racist. I am struggling, but I am trying to understand some of the opposition to my long standing prejudices.
I have never been to the Utah, Colorado, Idaho area and I am really enjoying the views.
Learned Hand
Mar 14, 2006 @ 3:00 pm
Hi, I'm Learned Hand and I'm a wannabe Mormon. Well, not really, but I have a bunch of Mormon friends, I've spent lots of time with them and their families, I've been to Mormon church, written articles on proposed temple sites, been to Salt Lake and all around Utah, done a lot of research on polygamy, especially the Short Creek raid as well as later legal research on the Green case, and once broke onto a polygamist compound and had a look around and talked to one of the zillion granddaughters of the creepy prophet.
So, yeah. I loved the shots of the downtown office building with the view of the temple -- it looked like it was shot from an office I've been in, actually -- and the Utah scenery and I love Salt Lake.
So ... much draws me to this show. Hi, everyone.

Mar 14, 2006 @ 6:12 pm
Hi folks! I'm so excited! For 2 reasons, really. 1) Because I haven't felt the draw to the forums since Angel went off air, and now I feel like I have something that deserves the speculation, chat and introspection that makes a quality show. 2) Polygamy whee!
Just for background, I've lived in Idaho and Utah, and nearly converted to Mormonism, but didn't for reasons that should probably be kept to myself--or at least not discussed on this topic--all of my best friends growing up (and 2 still today) are Mormon--one Jack, one Molly--and I actually had a friend in 7th grade who left school when she married at the end of the year.
I think that the casting is very intriguing--I was shocked to see Bill Paxton, although it makes sense with his "nice guy" persona. And Jeanne Tripplehorne and Clhoe Svegniy (I'll get them right eventually) are just the right oil/water combination.
Yay for HBO! Yay for TWoP! *waves*

So glad to be here!

Hi all! I really loved the first episode of this show and I'll be curious to see how it plays out. I have a few friends who are polyamorous and their household dynamics are interesting; I can see a few parallels already.
Also, it's so nice to see the VM cast members. I'll watch Tina Majorino and Amanda Seyfried in anything.

Well, when the three of us go out together, we generally act "couple-y," and it hasn't been an issue (no one staring or pointing or anything). And I've brought my partners to a few TWoP events, and everyone was cool. We've told all of our siblings about it, too, and they were supportive.
Right now, I'm wrestling with how to tell some of my friends, because I have a feeling they'll be judgmental. My girlfriend told friends of hers, and they reacted badly. Like, "the only way we can be friends with you now is by telling you how wrong you are." Asshats.
For the most part, when I've told people, they ask if I'm happy (yes), and ask a lot of questions. I enjoy educating people about it.
Go ahead and email me if you have questions you're embarassed to ask on the board.
