In the media thread there was an article about the show flirting with setting a story thread elsewhere, even abroad. But I felt my post was starting to get a bit far from the actual article under discussion and there doesn't seem to be a better thread so I'm starting this one to discuss location shoots that are, new locations that may be, as well as the genius of the set designs and general professions of love for Joseph Hodges.
We've seen a few alternate locations. Kuala Lumpur and Seoul briefly glimpsed in Seasons 1 and 2's premieres; DC in the vice-presidential plots in Seasons 2 and 4; and of course FauxMexico in Season 3.
I think a DC location shoot could be particularly interesting. What I really would like is if the producers buy some of the sets from "The West Wing" to use next season. At the very least, the Oval Office -- things like the situation room could be given much more of a Joseph Hodges workover because they're less familiar. A major plot in DC, combined with occasional location shoots (and let's face it, the vast majority of the time the stuff can be shot on set or in "LA doubling for elsewhere" a-la Mexico) could be absolutely excellent. The White House apparently loves the show...
I liked the presidential bunker last year. Although I assume it's probably been torn down to create the president's new pad this year. Although they kept the Division set between seasons 2 and 3...

I liked the presidential bunker last year.
Either on the DVD commentaries or........ somewhere else, Joseph Hodges said the Presidential bunker was the same set as the Araz house. I'll try and find it because he was explaining how it matched up.

gallimaufry, I think you mean they kept the set for District between S2/S3. District is the place where Palmer hung out at the end of S2; I don't remember, but I guess it probably was the same place where he stayed in S3, after the debate. As far as I know, we've never actually seen Division, the mysterious organization that sends a constant stream of pointy-headed bosses to get in the way at CTU.
(I would have liked to see S4 take place at Division instead of CTU LA, but that's for another thread.)

I meant to check this, but I'm sure the set has been called Division (e.g. by Jon Cassar on the S2 features) -- though it's certainly been called District as well (e.g. by Sherry in 315). I don't actually remember whether it was called Division in the show, admittedly. I figured they just conflated them. Then again, it explains Ryan's non-presence in 217 and 218. Besides, you know, the bomb threat was over and his grandmother in Florida suddenly recovered from her deadly illness after all.
On another note, the gas company station looked cool. Although it amused me that CTU was monitoring the pressure with high-tech computer equipment and the gas company place had all these analogue indicators.

According to Variety, 24 will be filming in Washington
Kiefer Sutherland and several other thesps will make the trip, shooting scenes from eight different episodes over this weekend and the next.... Show will shoot around the city, including in Georgetown neighborhoods. Gordon hopes to also capture a D.C. politician cameo or two.
Does anyone know specific places? I suspect the usual locations. Haven't cased the city for filming since West Wing...

For all my criticisms of the trailer on the relevant thread, I got a good vibe from the FBI set. I was hoping for more office-based than CTU felt - if that makes sense - and this is kind of what I had in mind. I would have liked individual offices with maybe a main meeting room to really alter the dynamic from the open-plan of CTU, but hopefully this will still go some way to freshen things up.

I miss CTU actually. Joseph Hodges would design these crazy, futuristic, open sets in the early years. Last year's White House set was fun for five minutes but ultimately, it wasn't nearly as fun as the Palmer and Logan complexes in years 2 and 5 (although the bunker was fun); and I'm not really keen for another 'realistic' set. Hopefully it'll look better when we get a good look. Or maybe they get blown up in hour 4 and have to move to a slicker setting.

gallimaufry, if I'm not mistaken the White House set was leftover from another show, not built specifically for 24. As for this set, while looking quite different from CTU it maintains a very Hodgesian feel, what with all the foreground, the frosted glass, etc.

They originally intended to use the White House set from I think either Dave or American President, but the rental was so high that Joseph said he could build one for the same or less...... and he did. That is directly from Joseph at the last LCA. BTW, he absolutelly hates White House sets because they're so prescribed and "boring".

According to today's (Friday's) The Washington Post, shooting here in DC starts tomorrow (Saturday) in Georgetown area and will go to other 'un-named' locations in the city. I'll be checking out the Georgetown shoot to see what I can find, but if 24 is anything like The West Wing when shot here (or The District if we want to recall Craig T Nelson days of TV), the shoots will just pop up ont he streets and you just seem to bump into them. I'll let you all know what I find!

There are reports and photos on a couple of other sites about filming in D.C. According to security personnel, they started at about 4am around the Smithsonian museums on the mall. The day was spent in Georgetown at 33rd and N which in the townhouse that was JFK's when he was a Senator.
Kiefer ate dinner Friday at night at
Cafe Milano. Sat a table in the middle of the restaurant and signed autographs for anyone who asked.

marbethofpob,
Just wanted to drop back in to add my experiences this weekend and back up your reports.
I heard the reports of Mall shooting from crew that backs up your early morning claim, as well as some panoramic shooting to get the Mall, Captiol, etc. for later green-screen use. I was also told they were filming a drive-by shooting earlier this weekend along the Mall as well as various driving shots along M Street in the heart of Georgetown.
I'll move my more spoiler-filled breakdown to the spoilers forum, but the JFK house was used because the 24 producers liked the historicla value and implication of the house. Scenes were shot outside the house many times, and Kiefer was on set. Please see a more detailed breakdown in Spoilers.
Also, personally, two friends actually bumped into Kiefer and Carlos at Nathan's in Georgetown (perhaps after your referenced dinner marbethofpob) where he bummed a cigarette off them and bought them all drinks. Here's to hoping Kiefer made use of a cab or driver that night.
I have a few pictures to share that'll I'll try and post up on flicker, but nothing of note outside of the above actors on set and all.

Thanks for the info! Someone on Fox reported the following about today's (Sunday) shooting:
24 was filming today at The Willard hotel in downtown Washington. It is very close to the White House. I was able to watch Kiefer film a scene where Jack Bauer comes running out of the hotel, gun drawn, and aims his gun at all the local rooftops. Then he hopped in a parked gold SUV. The crew broke for lunch, and I was able to speak with Kiefer and get my picture taken with him. H ewas very gracious and offered to take numerous pictures with fans. He was awesome!

I live in Central Virginia, and I was thinking of going to an event in Adams Morgan in D.C. Friday night, and spending at least part of the weekend in D.C. Does anyone know if the filming will still be going on, and where (i.e., Georgetown, the Mall, etc)? I would love a chance to see some 24 being shot. I've been a fan since Day 1 Ep 1, and chances like this don't come along that often. Thanks!

In early October when I spoke to Nicole Burke and Brad Turner, they had just moved the dates to November 1 - 5 from the previous week because some of their locations were on the course for the Marine Corps Marathon. They did do some 2nd unit photography the last weekend in October that will be used for establishing shots and as greenscreen.
Subject to the strike, they are also due to come back for another week in the spring.

marbethofpob,
Thanks for the information. I am a complete novice as far as TV production goes. Does this walk-out by the 24 writers mean that all shooting immediately stops, or does it mean that they will keep shooting everything that's been written up to this point, and then stop shooting? I've spent time on film sets, but TV seems to be a completely different animal. I hope there is some more shooting in the DC area at some point, so I can have a chance to drive up there and take a peek.

Seemed time to bump this up.
They filmed some S7 scenes in downtown L.A. on Sunday and at the old
St. Luke's Hospital in Pasadena on Tuesday.
The prequel will be shot primarily in South Africa.
