The latest story I've thoroughly enjoyed is nostalgia's
Notes on the Domestication of Birds, which manages to take the dodgiest of premises (the Doctor and Rose settling down) and actually make it work in a way that is utterly heartbreaking.
Also, for all the recs I've been colelcting for the last 10 months, I've been posting them
here and
herewho else has recs?

Moi! They're spoilerific for those who haven't seen the 2005 series yet, though. So be careful out there, folks!
Thanks for starting this thread,

Ok, I'm going to try this again as the computer ate my first try.
For fans of the Third Doctor I'd recommend Jeri Massi's
Always the Third Doctor page. She has quite a few stories and covers his entire era as well as some spinoff stories starring Liz Shaw. She has a great grasp of the characters, especially Jo and the Master. I only wish she had an interest in writing for some of the other Doctors.

Back in the day, there was some fanfic that paired off Romana and David Letterman. Anyone else ever see this? It was a decent entertaining series written script style, that kind of petered out as the author moved on to other things. Very satirical.

Ah, that's you? I love "The Dangers of Exceeding the Blinovitch Limitation Effect", as well as any story with the Master in it. Well, all your stories well reward reading.
On a separate note, can any one recommend any good Fourth Doctor fanfiction. I seem to have the hardest time finding good stories about him.

New series rec:
Closet Idealists, by
chicafrom3 over on LJ. It's kind of a character study of Jack through time (and space!), and it features two of my main fic-reading dislikes-- introspection rather than plot (if there's no plot, I'd damn well be getting some porn out of it instead) and a paucity of dialogue-- and yet sucked me right in. Beautifully written and pitch-perfect emotion and so very, very
Jack.
ETA: Spoilers through the end of the first season.

Here's a pretty neat crossover with Firefly, though it seems to be discontinued. It features the Seventh Doctor and Ace, and the two universes fit together perfectly.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2709807/1/Also, this is a great one with Two, Five, Seven, and Ten meeting the various Blackadders.

This is possibly the best piece of fanfic I've ever read. Normally, the topic might make me a little queasy(don't worry, not graphic sex or violence, if that bothers you), but this....just perfect. Made me cry, and I don't often say that.

Jackie Tyler in the Fourth Dimension by Cryptile is wonderful. It's a rather hilarious and very touching look at the Doctor and Rose and the messiness of time travel throughout the years through Jackie's eyes. Definitely a classic.

May 8, 2006 @ 9:27 pm
I have to second the rec for Jackie Tyler in the Fourth Dimension. Knocked me off my feet with its subtle nature and hidden meanings. I liked it even better on the second read; knowing what I suspected the first time around made it seem that much more cruel and beautiful.
And I've gotta rec nostalgia's
The Short Revolution of TimeDoctor/Reinette. Series two, episode four, so for the Americans, stay away or something equally forbidding. Steve managed to steal all the best parts out of the episode that didn't happen and make them BITE me on the shoulder. It felt captured and reused and torn to pieced and finally pasted back together. And it was only PG-13, the whore.
and while I'm here, I'd like to rec
Barry Rowland Saves the World by Kremmen.
AMAZING humor, fun, out of the world dialogue, and an interesting plot. Fourth Doctor, Romana -- who needs anything more?

I thoroughly second the rec for wmr. Brilliant.
I've spent many happy hours trawling whofic. Does anyone have rec for some good angsty fic?
Raksha
May 9, 2006 @ 9:49 am
Heh. It seems all I can find anymore is angst. I was just coming here to ask if anyone has any happy, funny, or just plain fluffy fics to recommend!
If you like wmr, she's got a nice angsty post-Girl In The Fireplace fic up
here. Made me want to die, so you know it's good!
ETA:
A Sort of Man by Kate Andrews is 10 kinds of awesome. After she saw the Christmas Invasion special, she wrote this about Ten figuring out what kind of man he is and renegotiating his relationship with Rose. I think this characterization of Ten is quite interesting, although non-canonical at this point. Also, it's kind of hot. I wish this author would write more.
thedorkygirl
May 9, 2006 @ 4:44 pm
Hehe. wmr's fic mentions famous blondes.
Aside from that, well, I don't know. Is the fic in character for Rose? Maybe in a few episodes when she's been dumped on a bit more, but this fic feels far more like foreshadowing than current. It seems like something that could happen by the end of the season, which is suxxors and still goes with the whole all companions leave idea that is a D'UH that most people seem to forget.
I do like where she finishes up. Staying with Jack while bringing Mickey is an interesting idea! Or does she just dump Mickey? I almost would prefer that Mickey had *stayed* or even considered it before she was all, "Yeah, and I'm going off with this old time traveler friend I had to fight, like, evil things."

A Sort of Man really is awesome. I think it's one of the best fics on this fandom. This: "He remembers wishing her good night, then pounding his fists into the walls until his skin split. He remembers that wanting that with the ache of a stiff, angry red scar." is hot. Really hot. So hot that I wish she'd write a fic about it. Hee.
Raksha
May 9, 2006 @ 10:28 pm
Speaking of hot, I found Kate Andrews' other Doctor Who fic. It's a Ten/Rose smut piece called
Give and Take. By the time she wrote this, she'd seen much more of Ten, so the voice is spot on. So hot. And so cute! My favorite bit is at the very end:
"We're going to be good, Rose. We're going to be so good," he says as if it's a wonderful secret meant only for her.. See? Cute! And hot!

There was also a strange and almost constant singing noise, which the Doctor eventually identified as the greatest hits of Barry White on continuous play.

Raksha, thanks so much for the rec! It made me miss S1 all over again, and I had to rewatch
Boomtown. A part I loved?
The Doctor shifted aside, leaning his hip against the counter. He caught her hand and swung it. His voice was deliberately jocular, completely at odds from what he was saying. “You have the most kissable mouth I’ve seen in 900 years, Rose Tyler. And it would be a bad idea for me to ever do anything about it. I wouldn’t be able to stop with kissing. So–completely impossible, out of the question, will never do it.”
Adorable. My sentimental shipper heart can almost
hear Nine say this, grinning all the while. Aw! And hee, Jack. The whole thing is just spot on.

Kate Andrews (aka svilleficrecs) has done another fantabulous Ten/Rose story
here. It's the Doctor and Rose at the running of the bulls in Pamplona in 1921. Sweet and intense. It's part of a set of stories on a theme (the other two stories are set in the Life on Mars and Veronica Mars fandoms).
Thanks to Chenoeh on the VM boards for rec'ing this.

Okay, I can't believe I've done this and that I'm telling people about it. I'm pimpin' my fic,

Er, I had a whole review for Caffienejunkie's story, but the page randomly reloaded on me! I cry, I cry.
So, I really liked how you took the idea, twisted it around, made it happy, made it bitter. And...*thinks* I got pwned 'bout underwear in 'la joie de la vie' -- apparently, they didn't wear any.
OH! And -- a smut-free post GitF?! insanity! I had no idea that there were any.

May 19, 2006 @ 9:39 am
Thank you both, thedorkygirl and TartanTart. I started writing teh smut and it just read so very, very badly... awful stuff! So I left it out. I haven't written fic in years!
eta Anyone else with a whofic.com account - Do you find that you get huge numbers reading the first chapter and then only a third of them moving on to subsequent ones? (Noooo, I'm not sensitive and needy at all!)
Raksha
May 19, 2006 @ 9:50 am
I wouldn't worry about the numbers. A lot of things happen to make them like that. For instance, you got three hits from me on the first chapter, but only one each on the others. I kept getting interrupted when I tried to read it, so I would have to shut off my computer and go do stuff before I tried again.
But I liked it a lot! Mickey cracked me up (calling the Doctor "Bridget Jones." Hee!). You should definitely write more DW!

I recently stumbled across whofic and my free time's been flying by ever since. wmr is definitely bookmarked as one of my favorites. I think the first fic I read there was
Downtime by Cryptile. Takes place right after The Christmas Invasion and it made me laugh out loud.
And
Caffeinejunkie, I really liked yours. It was lovely. I liked the dynamic between Mickey and the Doctor and the parts with Reinette were beautifully done.
Raksha
May 25, 2006 @ 9:04 am
Ooh, yes, Cryptile's "Downtime" is priceless! The
staring contests with the graffiti face was hilarious. This is probably my favorite bit:
He fixes the face with his deadliest of deadly stares. He knows it is deadly because he has been practicing. He's had a good run with deadly stares, lately, barring that unfortunate period in his life when everyone thought he was just too romantic and sweet.
"Doctor!"
And then he'd blown his planet up. Well, that had shown everyone.
Heh.
