New Series: If super-attentive-cops are your thing like Monk or Detective Goren, you just got lucky again. More details
HERE(Los Angeles, CA - Feb. 17, 2006) USA Network is building on its 2006 original programming slate with an 11-episode order for the one-hour series PSYCH, starring James Roday ("Dukes of Hazzard," "Miss Match"), Dule Hill ("The West Wing") and Corbin Bernsen ("Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang," "LA Law"). Series is executive produced by Steve Franks ("Big Daddy")
PSYCH, centers on Shawn Spencer (Roday), who possesses uncanny powers of observation honed by his police officer father, Henry (Bernsen), who drilled young Shawn to note even the smallest details of his surroundings. When Shawn is accused of committing a crime that he actually solved for the police department (by calling in a tip), he convinces the cops that he's a psychic, and with the reluctant assistance of his best-friend Gus (Hill), Shawn starts solving cases for an ever-skeptical - but grudgingly impressed - police force.
Hmm... USA already airs Monk and L&O CI at all hours of the day and night... so who will notice another super-attentive investigator?? Fakin' it as a Psychic will be the only original twist in this show. Plus we all know Corbin Bernsen kills TV series at the mere mention of his name. So I don't think this one will hang around for a long time.
Thoughts?

I will be watching just for Dule Hill.

Is anyone else bothered by the very premise of this show? Are we supposed to learn to like a fake psychic (a redundancy, of course) who, like all con men, is able to study people's body language and "read" them? If this were real life, his actions would cause somebody to die at some point, especially if the cops believed him and took resources away from where they were needed and used them where they were not. I saw the "characters wanted" commercial with Monk and the psychic, and that's exactly what con men do. This guy better be really charming if they don't want me to hate him and think of him as a despicable human being. Damn charming.
But, I'll be watching.

Ack, I accidentally started another thread for this show because I can't spell it, so it didn't show up in my search. I'm an idiot. Many apologies.
I'm hoping they don't try to treat this too seriously. If it feels too "real", I think I will be upset about promoting psychics being used in forensics. It already seems like there is enough of that crap going on in real life. The Dead Zone doesn't bother me much because it's so obviously not real even if they treat it real. Hmm, I'm not sure that made any sense.
Dule Hill is actually a big negative to me. He was on Celebrity Poker Showdown and bugged me so much, I really have no wish to see him any more.

I think part of the way they seem to be trying to avoid some of the problems mentioned above is by making it so that, unlike "real" psychic detectives, this one isn't just pulling stuff out of his ass. He's actually giving genuine information, based on observation, deduction, and photographic memory, but packaging that information as if he were psychic.

Apart from being glad that Dule Hill has a new series, I wasn't very interested in this until I saw a commercial during the AFI tribute to Sean Connery. I smiled a lot, laughed out loud a few times, and decided that we really have to at least give it a try. And, yes, it's being packaged with "Monk", which is being moved to an hour earlier on the USA lineup on Friday night.

I had heard that Corbin Bernsen had a new series, but I couldn't remember the name of it. I just saw the banner at the top of TWoP and decided to check out its site. Definitely looks funny.
I'll be TiVo-ing it July 7th.

I just saw the pilot "on demand" and it made me laugh so hard! I thought it was very funny.
It doesn't exactly have a good story and Dule Hill was wasted in the first episode but the main character was so funny I didn't notice. Definately will watch the second episode.

Definitely a fan. I caught it on "on demand" as well and was cracking up the entire time. I hope it does well.

I also watched the sneak preview on On Demand (I heard On Demand will also be showing the new eps of Psych and Monk the day after they run, thank you USA Network!)
I can't stand "real" fake psychics, (I believe all so-called psychics are charlatans) but I like this show. It's funny, and no more real than Monk is, where the jokes and characters matter a great deal more than plot consistencies or solving mysteries.
James Roday reminds me of Mark Harmon in the movie Summer School.

There are a several promo clips up on Youtube. I'm assuming it's a part of the deal they made with NBC.
Are the OnDemand viewings only for Time Warner cable?

No, we have the local, rinky-dink cable company that all-around sucks, and we've got it here.

My cable co. must suck more than I thought because it's not showing this. I tried the "More" section of On Demand and there was nothing but the Monk section, which isn't active yet. Oh well. I'll just have to wait until Friday. I am glad to hear that it's funny, though.

Well, I may have good news for you, then, because Psych was coupled with Monk on my On Demand. Just keep checking, because it may pop up there.

Thanks, GovMarley. You were right. I tried it again and they are bundled together. For some reason, it took forever for them to show up on the display.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty good and quite funny. Although, I'm not sure putting this back-to-back with Monk is such a good idea since both shows are so similar to each other, but I still plan to watch it anyway.

LOL! I loved that part.
I'm kicking myself. I've been holding on to the DVD of this for a few weeks (It was passed out when I went to see 'Nacho Libre') and never watched it because I thought it would suck. I'm so wrong. I love this show. I can't wait to watch other episodes.

Count me in as "meh" on this episode. I too saw it "on demand" and found the lead character somewhat insufferable. It's not a terrible show....very similar to "Monk" in tone etc. These types of shows are a little too slow in plotting/unrealistic for my taste.

I saw the On Demand preview, too, and liked it at least as much as I like Monk. I thought the main character's charm and funniness made up for the fact that he is, essentially, a charlatan. I didn't really see why he pulled Gus into his hijinx, but whatever. I even liked Corbin Bernsen. He's aging well. I was pleased there were several lines that made me laugh out loud. I don't do that very often when I'm watching TV. I've gotten the Season Pass on TiVo, and I've prioritized it in the top ten. Yeah, that's how much I liked this show.

I mostly liked it, but they really have to dial down the asshole cop. I was reminded of Sheriff Fuckface from Veronica Mars, who the writers are still refusing to give an ounce of humanity after two seasons.
I knew it was the dad as soon as they zoomed in on the bandaged arm, though I thought it was because he scraped it on the table, hence the blood smear.
I loved Dule Hill in Holes; he just has these very wide, sad eyes that look like the weight of the world is contained in them. Great to see he can be funny too.

If the pilot is anything to go by, I'm going to like this show. I love that it didn't take itself seriously, they just had fun with it.
Gus screaming after finding the bodies was funny. As was
Shawn: "I solved the mystery of who kept taking your newspapers. It was me."
I'll definitely be back.

I caught this and liked it much more than I thought I would. I always like shows that don't take themselves too seriously. Laughed quite a bit.
They really should get rid of the cop played by the guy who used to be on Judging Amy. Didn't like him there. Don't like him here.

I liked it too. I think 90 minutes is too long for the premiere of a show whose characters we're not familiar with, but they did a really nice job setting up the framework of the show. Dule Hill is great as always, and the main guy is pretty charming and funny too.

Really good and really funny. I think all the actors did well, but they do have to dial down the ass hole cop.
Dule doing Michael at the end was too hysterical. Really enjoyed seeing his humorous side.

The interim police chief's voice sounds a lot like Alison La Placa. Very distinctive (and good call on young Mrs. Landingham!).

Gus screaming after finding the bodies was funny.
I wasn't expecting that so it made it funnier to me when it happened.

But he rocked on Xena.

She'll always be Lorraine Ross from BtVS to me.
I liked the premise and the fact that it didn't take itself seriously too much as well. I'll watch it from time to time.

Hooray.... A halfway decent new show! I enjoyed it, but a few things bugged. In addition to the cop with the attitude, I think they're going to have to dial back the lead character. I don't want him to be perfect all the time, like we saw in tonight's episode. Example: Knowing what logos were on each of the six hats in the restaurant? Please. I know we're supposed to accept that Sean is very perceptive: fine. But are we supposed to believe that Sean has laser-vision too? That's too much.

I'm liking it too. Shawn was smarmy but not entirely overly obnoxious. It suited the character well in the circumstances that were portrayed. The asshole cop needs to be toned down a bit. Corbin Bernson is aging well. I'll definitely see another episode.
BTW, I agree with the Monk feel to the show. Although this show is a little bit less serious.

I was in two minds as to whether to watch based on the promos but gave it a shot. I was surprised how funny some elements were but it also has some problems which I hope they sort out in subsequent episodes. I found the zooming in on the things he was noticing very annoying and hope that either goes away or is cut down on. I also agree that they laid the 'nasty sceptical detective' a little too thick. He felt almost cartoon like to me.
All told I think I'll watch again and see if it settles into its stride over the next few weeks.

I stayed after
Monk to watch this and wow, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. What got me interested was the use of "Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes (a song about masturbation) in the promos. I laughed a lot during the whole episode and I'm really liking all of the characters so far, of course, except for the asshole cop from
Judging Amy. The character of Shawn was bordering on irritating asshole for part of the episode, but I think the character was redeemed when we saw that he doesn't have ALL of the answers (the dead bodies). I'm also loving Gus mainly because I love Dule Hill. The girly screaming is still cracking me up. It's a good show to follow
Monk and I was pleasantly surprised. I'll stick with it for a while and see how it goes.
Corbin Bernson is aging well.
Mmm, yes. Given that I'm closer to the Shawn character's age, I should've been thinking that he was the cute one, but all I could think the whole time was, dayum, that's one good-looking dad.

I thought this show was pretty funny. I'll definitely watch the next few and see if it keeps my interest.
I guess this type of show is less mystery and more character, but what bugged me was how the police didn't (I assume) check for gun powder residue on the son's friend in the cabin. I would have thought the lack of residue would indicate someone else had fired the gun.

I think this show might end up sacrificing continuity and authenticity in the actual investigation for the sake of the comedy. Oh and I also loved the outtake that they aired during the credits with Gus singing "The Man in the Mirror" behind Shawn. Hee!

Even though I thought 90 mins was too long, I really liked the show. Shawn was only slightly irritating, and I really liked Gus. As long as they keep the characters interesting I really don't mind if the mystery takes a back seat. I have CSI for that.

Ok, I was hooked by the premier; pretty funny. Just one thing threw me off...
Where was this supposed to be set, Santa Barbara, Venezuela? 'Cause if they thought the everglades-like forest around the cabin could be found anywhere near SB, CA they need to do some more location scouting.
The cognative dissonance kept pulling me out of the show.

I mostly liked it, but they really have to dial down the asshole cop. I was reminded of Sheriff Fuckface from Veronica Mars, who the writers are still refusing to give an ounce of humanity after two seasons.
And to me (perhaps because of the other Monk comparisons) he reminded me of how they wrote Stottlemeyer in the first few episodes of Monk, if they change that character from someone who actively resents Monk and has disdain for his talents into one who has a genuine love, affection and concern for Monk and change it so much that no one even remembers the early episodes, I imagine they can make something like that here.
I liked it for the most part, I do love Dule and hope they will have more moments with him shining like the "girly scream" or the hilarious outtake at the end of him singing Man In The Mirror during the reveal to the murder. Got potential and I will definitely check out future eps.

I love that the official color of this show seems to be green. I have no idea what it means, but stylistically it's pretty cool: the promo backdrop/text, Shawn's shirt and later again his sweatshirt, Dule's bedsheets and a print on the wall of his apartment, the Chief's office, the bulletin board (poster?) in the new 'Psych' office, even Dule's shirt in his blog photo is green. And those are just off the top of my head. It must mean something (other than just a bored set/costume designer)!

I love these kind of detective/mystery shows with a comedic twist. I think USA is being smart about the Dead Zone-Monk-Psych match ups. The best part for me are those commercials with the three detectives. They always make me giggle. That's a huge achievement considering I hate the Dead Zone actor and the character he plays like no other.
Anyway, I love Dule too but hope they put him to more use in the future episodes. And the actor playing Shawn is great. I really hope the series becomes sucessful.

ITA, BostonsKrissy, about the commericals with Monk, Shawn Spencer, and Anthony Michael Hall's character (sorry, I haven't a clue what his name is). Monk and Psych are a wonderful match for one another!
Dule Hill has officially been added to my list of tv boyfriends (skooch over Anderson, Jon, Stephen, Wentworth, Dan, Josh, Adawale etc) because 1) the man is all kinds of hot; 2) he's all magnetic on screen; and 3) that girly scream damn near killed me.
I liked the premiere very much. My local newspaper review said that it was tough to like Shawn's character and that James Roday (playing Shawn) was a little too much. I have to disagree with the reviewer. Roday and Hill play really well off one another. Shawn is a little much, but that's kind of the character. And I think Roday makes him just likeable enough. I think we are suppose to end up feeling about Shawn the way Gus feels about him: We love him, but we want to give him a good knock in the balls every now and again.
I'll look forward to this every week. Ummm, I'll have to tape it though. I'm not missing Numb3rs.
