I just wanted to mention here that Kryptonsite has a blurb from Variety about how "Cure" did well in the ratings.

"Cure" continued Smallville's Season Seven winning ratings streak with 5.1 million viewers. Variety notes that Smallville "remains potent" in its incredibly competitive timeslot.

Smallville had its best ratings in the ages 18-34 and 18-49 demographics since January, when the network screened the popular episode "Justice." Smallville also ranked or tied for #1 in the 8PM hour with Males 18-34, 12-34, and 12-17, and placed second in its timeslot among teens.

http://www.kryptonsite.com

Thefutoncritic.com always puts up the press releases from the networks. There is none from the CW for "Cure." However, they did one the day before for ANTM/Gossip Girl because they did well with women.
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20071018cw01

FYI, same thing happened with "Justice." The CW did not issue a press release about its ratings, but they did one for "Promise" emphasizing that it did well with women.

From their pattern of press releases, it seems like they're not interested in young men (which I struggle to understand, but which might be explained by the type of demos packages they're selling. I don't know.) They seem to have a very limited interest in young women because they act as if nothing else matters to them. If so, then it's hard to know what the CW may be feeling about SV. Considering their dismal ratings for everything else on their schedule, one would think the CW would be very happy by SV's consistency, but if the numbers aren't high enough in the demos the CW want (young women) then the show still might not in their good graces and be a mark against it considering how expensive the show is.

Holy crap! Bring back Dean Cain! Now! And a shirtless AM every week would also be appreciated.

On a more serious note, I wonder TPTB are looking at the subject matter - mythology / action plots, which often do better than romance /relationship plots, have been the focus of the first four episodes. If / when the focus shifts more towards Clana tru luv (no spoiler, just thinking Al and Miles will not be able to resist), will the good ratings still be there?

You know what though? I'm not so sure they are going to go back to that. They would have done it already, and now they are throwing doubts into Clark about Lana and her motivations. I'm sure there will be light fluffy scenes between the two, but I'm not so sure it's going to be as bad as it has been in the past.

Note: Any year-ago comparisons are based on final national ratings data.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Mirroring the year-ago evening, Fox scored a rare Thursday victory care of the ongoing Baseball World Series. Game two of the Colorado/Boston match-up (including the pre-game) averaged an approximate 15.64 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 in prime-time. Keep in mind, of course, that fast affiliate results for any live sporting event are always approximate. One year earlier, game four of the Detroit vs. St. Louis World Series match-up averaged 16.11 million viewers and a 5.1/15 in the demo on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006.

CBS and ABC shared the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, with CBS second in total viewers and ABC second among adults 18-49. CBS’ Survivor: China opened the evening on a winning note, with a healthy 14.16 million viewers and a 4.4/12 among adults 18-49. That led into a repeat of CSI (Viewers: #2, 14.76 million; A18-49: #3, 3.8/12), followed by Without a Trace at 12.75 million viewers (#2) and a 3.3/12 (#2t) in the demo at 10 p.m. ABC aired its regularly scheduled line-up of Ugly Betty (Viewers: #3, 9.84 million; A18-49: #4, 3.2/ 9), Grey’s Anatomy (Viewers: #1, 17.95 million; A18-49: #1, 7.3/15) and Big Shots (Viewers: #4, 8.08 million; A18-49: #3t, 3.3/ 7). Retention for failing Big Shots out of Grey’s Anatomy was just 45 percent in both total viewers and adults 18-49. And the loss of audience for Big Shots at 10:30 p.m. was a hefty 2.10 million viewers (9.13 to 7.03 million) and 26 percent among adults 18-49 (3.8/ 7 to 2.8/ 7). Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.

NBC finished fourth overall in both total viewers and adults 18-49 with its line-up of My Name is Earl (Viewers: #4, 8.23 million; A18-49: #3, 3.6/ 7), 30 Rock (Viewers: #4, 6.53 million; A18-49: #4, 3.1/ 5), The Office (Viewers: #4, 8.98 million; A18-49: #3, 4.7/ 7), the season-premiere of Scrubs (Viewers: #4, 7.03 million; A18-49: #4, 3.8/ 6), and veteran ER (Viewers: #3, 9.12 million; A18-49: #2, 3.7/ 8). Noticeable declines for both 30 Rock and Scrubs out of their lead-ins was enough to land both in the listing of losers.

The CW’s Smallville (Viewers: #5, 4.50 million; A18-49: #5, 1.8/ 4) and Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 3.27 million; A18-49: 1.3/ 3) were at typical Thursday levels.

Wow drop
MsSullivan
I figured we'd have a good drop. After the awesomeness that was "Cure" with Dean Cain, Chloe-centric, Chloe nakedness...can you really beat that? I knew this week would be filler, sucktastic guest star and the return of Nois. I decided not to watch live.
gobatara
Well considering the World Series was on and people didn't know if "Nois" was going to be there (no trailer no pics).....I doubt "Nois" had something to do with it
atem
I think Dean Cain had a lot to do with how well Cure did.
Massena1
I would guess that Ms. Sullivan's point was that there is a segment of the audience that has to be given an incentive to pick SV to watch live instead of record over something else. The competition is getting stiffer as Nov. sweeps starts and they did a good job last week of providing that extra incentive. This week? Not so much.

I'd guess more people decided to record. There was no indication that something big was going to happen so I'm guessing they felt SV could wait.

For that reason, I thought their ad for next week was lacking. They didn't mention Movie Supergirl Helen Slater was coming and Clark would get to see his mom for the first time. Hello? That is pretty much the only "event" element to the episode. People aren't that attached to Kara yet, so her life in jeopardy isn't an "event." However, SV fans have heard about Lara for years and getting to see her and getting to see Clark's reaction to her is an "event." They didn't try to build up any anticipation for that at all.

It'd be interesting to see if the media has done enough publicity about it that SV fans realize Helen Slater comes on next week and bring the ratings up a bit.
EllyF

That was my first thought when I saw the trailer. "She's a brand-new character-- why should I care?" Not that I dislike her character, but it seems like an odd thing to focus on. The fact that we're going to learn about Clark's mom is far, far more interesting, and it seems to me that would be more likely to draw in viewers.
Kahhhn
I expected a drop with the World Series being on. I would suspect that Smallville will get a big jump for this episode when the DVR numbers are calculated.

I thought the same thing. If I wasn't so invested in watching this show for seven years and knowing that "Kara's aunt" (sorry, I'm still ticked about that) is going to appear, I wouldn't watch next week live. I'd tape it though. Also, I haven't seen much in the media, other than on the internet about HS being on the show, let alone that it's next week.
Chiriru
I think Dean Cain had a lot to do with how well Cure did.

Me too. Of course if you bill a show that says that someone is going to be cured, and then you do not cure them... it was enough to make my brothers initially not want to watch. Throw in a lot less advertising as well, so I bet less transitional viewers had incentive to watch. Plus we live in a world where finding out scheduling is a click away, so even he knew ED was returning this ep which wasn't a plus for him either. (I had to tell him that Lionel was returning to make him tune in; he thinks Lionel is awesome.)

I'd guess more people decided to record. There was no indication that something big was going to happen so I'm guessing they felt SV could wait.

Totally. Had they advertised that it was Lionel's return, perhaps they would of done better. Same thing is going on for Lara actually - I had to tell my brothers that next week was the Helen Slater eps. They should be promoting that into the ground really.
Nothar

Yes, this is the same for me. I have a number of friends who watch Smallville at least casually, and all of them check the episodes beforehand to get the episode description and to see who is in it, to see if it is worth their while to watch, record, or skip. If it is a Lana or Lois heavy episode, then pretty much none of them watch it live, and some do not even record it.

Went up from the fast nationals. I actually don't think this is all that bad considering game 2 of the WS was on at the exact same time. I'm really interested to see their DVR plus 7 from this week. Smallville is one of the strongest shows percentage wise for DVR playback.

I just realized that at 10 million viewers, Heroes is barely getting twice what Smallville is. And they're on a real network.

Why do people think SV has lasted this long? Do you think it's the Superman connection? I'm serious with this question here...
scout1279
I do think it's the Superman connection. I think they get away with a lot because of that, and things that are familiar aways have an edge over things that are new. There's a comfort factor there. Also, regardless of what's actually happening on the show, the cast is always appealing, both in appearance and just plain likability. Mostly I think that after a certain point, a show sheds as much of an audience as it is going to shed and the people that are left aren't going to stop watching, whether they are actually enjoying it or not.
cdw
I've talked to only a few people that liked the way Heroes is going so far this season, most don't like it. I don't watch the show myself but maybe they've hit a little slump.

Because SV is gernerally based on a world reknown story/legend, it naturally attracts all types of demographic to their show. What person young or old, male or female doesn't love Superman? In addition to what scout said about the attractive cast and their likability, there's the draw of seeing how these people become their iconic selves, the involvement of other famous iconic characters, a generally family-oriented PG story (especially the first 4 seasons) and don't forget about their excellent choices in music which attracts a lot of teenagers and females.

Mostly I'd say that SV has done a good job at allowing their characters to change over the years and not keep them acting like kids. From season 5 till now the show has taken on a more adult vibe since the characters graduated and thats proved to be a good idea. You also see the finish line coming and its keeping an excitement level up this season.

Its quite an acomplishment that a show that doesn't get promoted, isn't available to be viewed in most areas, and is on a dying network- is still as popular as it is. On any major network their ratings would triple.

TW's Clark, dispite his Lana infactuation, has been writen great IMO. TW looks the role and he acts the role to perfecttion- he's a young Superman and a big draw guys and females alike. He's the driving force for the steady ratings. I'll go out on a limb here, but since Christopher Reeve, TW & SV's Clark Kent is the best Clark Kent I've ever seen on tv. SV's Clark has- heart, moreso than any other Clark ever. He pulls you in and gives off a vunerability that past Supermans just didn't give off. Suddenly you don't see him as this all-powerful indestrutive person, but this down to earth guy that takes life just as hard as the next guy. Though they stretch things sometimes, but writing a more human Clark was a stroke of genius by Al/Miles.

Heroes don't have the history of such a famous story like Superman, their characters are new and the show has to establish a base audience to keep. They have to consistantly come up with stories to keep people interested in the journeys their characters go through. Its all new and every episode is a surprise. You don't know the finish so you are putting faith in the producers to make the show worth your time. And sometimes people just don't have that much patience if they aren't sure it'll be worth it.
Black Panda
Smallville seems incredibly stupid on the surface. You can just watch an encapsulated little superhero story and turn off your brain. Yet the multi episode arcs aren't as predicable. You can get sucked into those after a few viewings. It was the deviations from cannon than intrigued me. Jor El was an ass so I watched more to figure out what was up with that, and what else was different. Next Chloe sucked me in, then Lex and Lionel. Finally the mystery that is Lana Lang consumed my brain and I knew the insanity was complete.

Heroes to me was very plot driven. You wanted to know what happened next. Once I knew, I never enjoyed the rewatch. I wasn't very interested in watching previous episodes. If I missed episodes, I had to start over from a point of confusion. Also people talk about the characters on Heroes being more human. Yet I didn’t like getting jerked between stories just when I was intrigued by a character.
KSiteCraig500
This might go better in the "comparisons to other shows" thing, but one thing you can say for Heroes is that they had more character development in 1 season than they did on Smallville's first 5.

BUT... I also see that even with the characters that are more disliked, they're still *comfortable* to fans... could that be part of the success? I mean, it's like the end of last season, when everyone thought Lana would die, I think a lot of people envisioned missing her if she was gone.

Am I right? I dunno...

The only downside to this is you can't have Smallville without Tom, whereas Heroes could do without a lot of people. (Though me, I think eliminating HRG would be my deal breaker)

I just wonder if, with Heroes' freefall in the ratings, will they even last as long as SV has?
TWoP Mars
If you want to compare Heroes to Smallville, we have a Smallville compared with other shows thread. This thread is for the discussion of Smallville's ratings and scheduling. Since Heroes isn't on the same night, the ratings of Heroes aren't on topic here. Thanks.

Not to start a debate here because it would OT, but Superman/Clark Kent is a character that has been blessed with many great performers: Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, and Tom Welling. Each one reinvented to part for the time and audience their show was aimed at. I like them all in their own way.

I really think one of the keys to SV's long success is the ensemble cast. Michael Rosenbaum is hands down the best, most complex Lex Luthor we've ever seen. And the relatively new characters to TV of Lionel and Chloe certainly have their fans and are two of themain reasons I keep watching the show.

And Lana...um, well, I'm not sure but there must be some Lana fans somewhere (I mean besides on the producing staff).
VersesBatman
I don't know if this is the right place to discuss this, but will the writers strike affect SV?
Kahhhn
Yes. Once the strike happens there can be NO edits to the scripts that are completed and no writing of the scripts that still need to be written. Al and Miles are a part of the Writer's Guild so they can't do it. TV is going to take the brunt of this strike unfortunately and we may be getting shortened seasons for a lot of shows, and in some cases, if the strike lasts for a couple of months, we won't get anything new after what they have already written.

Just look at 24...they could be 15 this year..lol
EllyF
All of which means that if Smallville isn't renewed, or the CW goes under at the end of the season, we may never find out what happened to these characters at all. I have to say that's a depressing thought. After all these years of waiting for a payoff, it'd suck if it just went out with an unplanned whimper.
Kahhhn

As popular as this show is on DVD, I would bet that they would get a DVD release like Battlestar is getting with RAZOR. Even though it's going to be on TV as well. You can charge 20 bucks for a finale DVD movie and if the 5 million Smallville fans buy it or at least rent it, you make a very good profit.
EllyF

Even so, I don't want everything wrapped up in a two-hour finale. AlMiles have said they need ten episodes or thereabouts. It would suck to be deprived of that. It would also suck if the show's renewed, but if they lose a bunch of actors and just have to say, "Oh, yeah, Lex moved to Edge City, Chloe joined the JLA, and Lana got hit by a bus."
Littlbit

Well, what would suck would be being told about it, rather than seeing it happen:-).

I have little doubt. Lots of people have a lot invested in the CW. And before they just let it fold and take whatever losses come from doing so, they will try new management to try to save the network and the money they put into it.

That's what happened with the WB. When things started to get rocky for them, they went through several network heads in a very short period of time.

That being said, there was an article about the CW recently where they interviewed CW execs and advertisers (and I think some folks from CBS and/or Time Warner, althoug my memory isn't solid on that). All of them said they are looking at the CW as a long-term thing that they know will take time and patience to find it's feet. So I'm not too sure about this idea that the CW is on the verge of collapse, and could be gone by next year.

Although a possible writers' strike could maybe change things. But the fact that the CW just completed a deal to start their own animated Saturday morning programming next season (taking the place of Kids WB) makes me think they are thinking long term.
TWoP Mars
Please make sure you're talking about ratings or scheduling before you post in this thread. I'm going to delete some recent off-topic posts.

One thing that I noticed in TV Guide that I think is a misprint... they say that "Siren" is airing on January 10.

I assumed "Persona" would be the first to air following a break, so would that be on January 3? Would they really air it that early?

I'm thinking it may be a typo. But I guess we'll see.
Kahhhn

Hey, they would if they were going to wrap the season up early so a certain tall actor could be able to film scenes for a Superhero movie. ;)

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS opened the Nov. 2007 sweeps on a winning note in the overnights, with an average 22 percent advantage over second-place ABC. Next was Fox, which posted hefty year-to-year gains as a result of back-to-back episodes of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, followed by NBC and the CW. As I say every week, NBC’s strength on Thursday falls within the young adult demographics -- adults 18-49, in particular. With that in mind, I will wait to see if Scrubs is worthy of a loser’s listing.

CBS’ veteran Survivor: China opened the evening on a winning note, with an 8.2 rating/13 share in the overnights. Next was ABC’s Ugly Betty (7.3/12), which dipped by a hefty 27 percent from one year earlier (10.1/16 on Nov. 2, 2006). Survivor was down by a less extensive 11 percent. Third from 8-9 p.m. was Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.5/ 9), followed by a one-hour edition of NBC’s My Name is Earl (4.9/ 8), and the CW’s Smallville (3.3/ 5). Comparably, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? built by a whopping 90 percent over year-ago occupants ‘Til Death and Happy Hour.

CBS stayed in the overnight winner’s circle at 9 p.m., with CSI at a 12.4/19. Second was Grey’s Anatomy on ABC (11.6/18), but the medical drama will win the hour among adults 18-49 once the fast affiliate results are posted at PIFeedback. Third was another edition of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.5/ 8), followed by NBC’s combination of The Office (5.1/ 7) and Scrubs (4.3/ 6), and Supernatural on the CW (2.3/ 3). Retention for Supernatural out of Smallville was a typical 70 percent last night.

First at 10 p.m., of course, was CBS’ Without a Trace, at a 10.7/18 in the overnights. Second was NBC’s needs-to-be retired ER (6.8/11), followed by Big Shots on ABC at an approximate 6.6/11. I stress approximate because the first four or five minutes of the 10 p.m. half hour included Grey’s Anatomy. With that in mind, look how much Big Shots dropped in the second half-hour:

10:00 p.m. Grey’s Anatomy/Big Shots: 8.6/13
10:30 p.m. Big Shots: 4.5/ 8

Note to Big Shots: tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking!

Can't say I'm surprised. The promotion of this episode was all wrong, and I think they should pull back a bit on putting so much emphasis on Kara quite yet. I think she's still an unproven quality.

My guess is it will bump to about 4.5 by the time the finals come out.
