Maybe it's time to bring back the "Smallville fatigue" theory
Yeah, I think I have finally caught this. I'm just not looking forward to the finale with any kind of anticipation like I usually do. And it sucks balls!!!!!
Not only that, but my fatigue is so great right now that I put off reading your reviews. I just can't muster the energy to relive the episode for a bit. I still have yet to read NEMESIS's recap. I'll get to it eventually, but...GOD!!! this really sucks.

Yes, the trailer. When you use the words "Clark", "Lana" and "Obession" in the same sentence, it's not exactly a ratings grab.
Add that to showing old clips and more Clexana triangle; and people online knowing it was going to be about Lana and Lana and the baby - and wasn't it that review about how "dark and twisty" Lana was? Hmm, I thought that might of factored in.
Either way, silent to disappointed boards (Which is what I've been seeing slowly since Promise) is corresponding with ratings falling, and falling, and falling. People actively are talking about tuning out, or why they aren't watching, and relating it right back to the spoilers about certain plot lines and characters (and characterizations.)

Maybe it's time to bring back the "Smallville fatigue" theory.
But yes, even good, popular, much-beloved shows have been dipping toward the end of this season.
But, it's also possible to buck a trend. SV did in Season 5 when instead of suffering from the day change, it thrived. SPN has bucked the trend by not suffering ratings declines to the same extent as SV.
If something on tv is good enough, people will still make a point to catch it as soon as possible when it airs. And there is nothing going against SV to explain the decline at this point except that SV isn't appointment tv for a lot of people anymore.

I'm sick of the references back to their friendship and how poor Lex was betrayed by Clark not trusting him. Tired of it. Want them to be full-blown enemies.
A- [insert choice obscenity here] - men! SV fatigue? Yeah, I've got it. One more episode and sweet freedom. In fact, my son has an orchestra concert the same night as the SV finale. And, I'm not even going to miss not seeing the finale right when it happens. This season can't end soon enough.

I usually don't root for low ratings for a show I watch.
Even in S4, I refused to root for cancelation. It just didn't sit well with me to root for people to lose their jobs. This season, however, I'm all over the rooting. Let this cast and crew move on to better shows, I say.

How are we blaming the slight ratings dip on Lois when she was featured in last week's episode (no one said anything then, btw) and the trailer shown for this week's episode (which was supposed to be a 'Lois heavy' episode, btw) showed, like, a split second of her?
Just face it. The show sucks -- the casual viewers are fed up.

I know I didn't watch live because I knew it was Lois heavy. And word of mouth gets out, my friends and a few family members were told by someone (me :p) that it was Lois heavy and most tunned into The Office instead & I'm thinking they'll do the same next week too.
Hmm Freak had a nice jump up (would have been more if it weren't for pre-emptions) and Progeny despite coming back from hiatus had good numbers compared to the episodes that followed. Labyrinth was a good episode, minus the last 5 min when Clark jumps into the clana hamster wheel for the nth time!

Since I read spoilers, I don't focus too much on the ads, but on www.kryptonsite.com 's news page, I have noticed that
1) the item for "Prototype" preview caps has a Nois one.
2) the reminder that Prototype was going to be a new episode has another image of her that looks like a screen cap.
I also noticed the "Noir" review had a screen cap of Nois in her lounge singer outfit.
So, due to that I have the impression that her role in these episodes was publicized. It seems like I saw somewhere video of her fighting with the bad guy and being carried off by Clark? I am pretty sure I didn't imagine that. But, as I said, I have to rely on other people saying what type of publicity they have seen because I rarely watch the CW.

But those are all internet examples, Massena1. In televison ads, Lois was barely, if at all, advertised, and on the radio Clark, Lana and Lex were pimped.
And I doubt if that slight dip was because that number of internet fans knew it would be Lois heavy.
You know what? I don't think it matters seeing as, of course, Lois will be blamed for everything.
Let's just all root for the non happening of an 8th season.

Based on what I saw in the previews for the finale, I'm still not to excited about it. I'll watch to see Lana get blown up (crossing fingers). And I hope it will improve the show next year. But all I hope for now is that they have a story arc for Clark. I think they could at least give us (the fans) on arc for him after putting up with this this year.

No one told me to put Lois in anything... in the case of the Noir episode image it really was the image that fit that image size the best, though originally I had wanted to use Clark with the glasses. It just didn't work out. Lois was in a majority of the preview images and I figure since it was spoiled as a pretty Lois-heavy episode, that's why that screen cap was used.
But no, no one told me to favor anybody... it just worked out that way.

And who is saying that the internet has such a little influence? People online got fed up at Promise and the ratings directly correspond with it; I don't understand how that can be brushed off. Is every one online - no. But a much larger group than most focus groups for a network are online; and internet chatter was dead on twop most of this week. And the ratings fell. Again.
People online know about the finale and aren't excited. People admit to sharing what they know online with people who are offline (I have people that ask me, so that's not a surprising revelation either.) They angered their core audience, and yes there are several factors. But on the same hand "it's just the internet" doesn't seem to be enough to write off what is going down when it's correlating to what ratings are doing.
People aren't watching and aren't excited here; and we see similar reflections in the ratings which indicates that a lot of people aren't interested in what they are trying to sell.
::::cough:::: no lana :::cough:::
And a great teaser put up on Yahoo. AND DCU stuff which always brings people to the yard (well except for Arrow, it went down, but Aqua and Cyborg both went up last year.)

May 11, 2007 @ 3:32 pm
I just think proportion-wise to go from 5.0 to 3.36 is like losing 1/3 of your audience from that high and being the lowest it's ever been just doesn't speak well for the show. You MIGHT be able to fanwank 4.0 or thereabouts but 3.36 in a steady downward slide . . . not so much.
And honestly, it's not only ratings but I have heard quite a few people say they're NOT going to get the DVD of this season due to the tragedy that is the latter half. So some money might be missed there.
I just think that it's stupid to pimp Lana so heavily considering that if KK leaves then they did a stupid thing by chasing off so many of the people sick to death of her character and if next season is Lana-light, I don't see her fans sticking around to watch anything BUT the episodes KK guests in.

Here's the reason "Its Lois' fault" doesn't work for me....the ratings have been dwindling down since "Promise". An episode Lois wasn't even in, and one that was completely about the Clexana bullshit. The numbers contined to drop for 2 episodes that Lois wasn't even in, "Progeny" and "Nemesis", episodes that were promoted heavily as a Chloe episode, and Clex/Lana episode.
Yes, I'm sure that there are people that don't like Lois...and ones that don't like Lana...and ones that don't like Chloe, etc. But I really think its the overall story that the show is telling, and what the primary focus has been on over the last 6 episodes. And that most certainly has not been Lois. Lois gets dropped in and yanked out of the story all damned season. Lois the character doesn't bother me, but the way Lois is used on the show annoys the hell out of me. I don't think she hurts ratings, but I don't think she helps them either.
But all I hope for now is that they have a story arc for Clark. I think they could at least give us (the fans) on arc for him after putting up with this this year.
Word! to that. IMO, nothing more then this is the reason the show is in such a rut and viewers are just fed up.

But those are all internet examples, Massena1.
I understand that, I was just saying that was my own impression because I don't watch the CW except for the very rare VM episode and the SV episodes I watch. I go off what I read/see on the internet as far as SV goes. I have to go off what other people post as the publicity they see etc. When I got the impression that Nois was going to be heavily featured in the episode, I stayed away. I am just speaking for myself and saying why I skip episodes. The Clexana bothers me but I can ignore it generally, unless all indications are going to be that it is all the episode is going to be about and if so, then why bother. But, I've only watched a handful of episodes this season. At this point, they have to give me a reason to watch. I won't just watch out of habit. The finale doesn't look too promising to me based on the transcript for the finale trailer and the spoilers. I doubt I'll watch live. I may record, I haven't decided yet. I have no incentive to watch it at this point.
As for Season 8, I keep thinking the CW is going to fold after next year. The management looks very poor.

Heh, that should be the new title of this thread :D
I think we should bet how low Phantom will go. I have the theory that since the pink script did the bigger amount of damage to the ratings it was a favor from one of the writers to the actors (maybe KK and MR) so they can start to sign for things to do after S7 ends and not be submitted to an 8 season.
I think Phantom will go as low as 3.20 million (and i've been generous I think we will hit 2.98) so what are your bets?

Sorority Boys 2
Off topic I know, but this would completely rock. Especially if Michael Rosenbaum could talk Tom Welling into co-starring.
Also, I'm in the camp that feels that the poor rating can't be blamed on any one character. The show has just been bad recently. Characterization has been all over the map. Lightswitches have been thrown. And most importantly, episodes have just been boring.
I actually joined this site in order to have people to commiserate with over the show because no one I know watches it in real life. And it makes me sad to see a show I used to have a love/hate relationship with degenerate into a bored/hate relationship. So here's to hoping these ratings guarantee a seventh and final season. Because I can't even imagine what the Goughlar would do with an eighth.

Do we really have to try and peg the ratings decline on one particular area of suck? From where I'm sitting, there's plenty of suck to go around. There's just not a lot there that's enjoyable anymore, and I think that's probably true no matter what characters you are a fan of.
I may dislike Lois, but I don't think she can take the hit for this. Clexana has killed this season off - everything else is just deck chairs on the Titantic.

Word. I don't think any one character is 100% at fault. I blame the slide in ratings on "Promise". The entire Clexana triangle has been consistent through the latter half of the season, and I can't think of anyone who's saying "Yeah, I want some more of that Clexana!" Lois's "journey into journalism", the entire "Chloe is a freak" plot which came out of NOWHERE, and Clark Kent being a guest star in his own show are cherries on top of a spectacularly horrific season. Not only that, but it's been boring. Season 4 --with the exception of "Krypto" and "Lucy" -- was at least
entertainingly bad. S6 is boring bad. I can't blame people for not watching at this point. It pains me to say this seeing as how I loved s5.

"Justice" is the one episode this year that really put fun and action to the forefront. So soap, no whining, no Lana; Clark and the JL boys going into action, snarky Lex....it's the template for what S7 should be (albeit with Clark in more of a leadership role next time around.)

Yep,
Durq. I loved "Justice." Except even then, wasn't it Ollie, not Clark, who came up with the JL name? I'm not even a comics fan, and that bothered me.
I'm no expert about comics, the movies, or even the TV show. I'd just like to see some hint of the Superman we saw Christopher Reeve play. We get tantalizing glimpses, especially in Season 5, but since "Promise," all I've seen is Clark getting mopey about Lana. And ED's character suddenly acting, out of nowhere, as if she's actually supposed to be "iconic" Lois Lane.
I skipped "Prototype" because I heard it would be full of EDLois anvils, and from what I've heard, that's what we got in that epi. What bothers me about that isn't what you think. It's not about ED, or even Chloe. It's Clark. I can't accept a Superman who would be OK with a love interest (Lana or EDLois, take your pick) who is that superficial.
That's why I didn't watch "Prototype," and, judging from the Clexana trailer for the finale, that's why I won't be watching "Phantom," either.

There was a whole scene cut from "Justice" that was referenced in the Smallville magazine (prepared before the episode aired)... it's clear on the screen that there was some stuff missing, but basically there was a bit where the future heroes discuss a team name.
Cyborg suggested the Titans, and A.C. said that sounds too much like a football team, and instead recommends the Legion of Super-Heroes. Bart insists on something cooler, like Doom Patrol. Chloe chimes in and suggests calling themselves the Superfriends. Then it cuts to the scene we saw where Ollie says it should be something with Justice in it.
I don't know if DC Comics blocked it or what, but that, plus a scene where Chloe snarks on A.C.'s Aquaman name, was one of the best bits that was cut from the episode. I hope it's on the DVD.
Regarding renewals... I HIGHLY doubt SPN is in any danger.
