What are some songs that perfectly describe characters?
"Gold-digger" by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx can by used for Gabby Solis on DH.
"Rich Girl" by Gwen Stefani and Eve is for Julie Cooper-Nichol on the O.C.
Anyone else?

I was listening to an Alan Jackson CD months and months ago, and realized that one of the songs totally fit Toby Beecher from Oz. It's "Everything I Love is Killing Me."
"Everything I love is killing me
Cigarettes, Jack Daniels and caffeine
And that's the way you're turning out to be.
Everything I love, I'm gonna have to give up,
Cause everything I love is killing me."
Keep "Jack Daniels", replace "cigarettes" and "caffeine" with "heroin" and "Chris Keller", and you have the story of Beecher's life and (somewhat) redemption. :)

Can I pick a line out of a song and apply it to a character?
It's from "Breathe, 2 a.m." by Anna Nalick, and for some reason this part:
Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while,
But my God it's so beautiful when the boy smiles,
makes me think of Nick Stokes from CSI.

Ooh, I like this thread. Since I spend way too much time listening to music and just as much time watching tv, I always end up associating characters with certain songs. One I thought of today while listening to this song. She isn't a fictional character, but her skanky ass is on tv all the time anyway. I think the song
"Starfuckers" by Nine Inch Nails perfectly applies to (shudder, I can't believe I am bringing her up) Paris Hilton. Just the thought of her makes me vomit. Anyway, these lyrics are perfect (but, I believe, originally written about Marilyn Manson) and I just love the bitter venom in the song.

Ah, but Ms. Hilton already has a song written about her :) I cant remember the name, or even who sang it, but I do remember some of the lyrics
"Ms Hilton

Ms. Hilton" (and then it said something about whether or not she wanted to fuck him, but he mumbled it so I dont really know what he said)
And NO JUDGING!! But the song "pop" by nsync describes the Cam/Chase sex scene soooo well.

Nowadays, I always see Lex Luthor in my mind's eye when I hear The Offspring's "Self-Esteem", Beck's "Loser" and Pink's "You Make Me Sick". But I guess you could throw Clark Kent in there, too.
I really love Aimee Mann's "How Am I Different" and think it's a perfect fit for Chloe Sullivan.
Somehow, I also associate Aaliyah's "More than a Woman" with Max from Dark Angel. I think it's the bike-riding seen on the music video and on the series, mostly. Don't know how well the lyrics match Max. But it's a great, passionate song, and I always had fondness for the Max/Logan couple.

I think the song "Good Intentions" by Toad the Wet Sprocket is perfect for the interns on Greys Anatomy. It starts off
"it's hard to rely on my good intentions
when my head's full of things that i can't mention
seems i usually get things right
but i can't understand what i did last night"
Which could describe so many moments on that show when they have done something ridiculously stupid because of their emotions.
Also the lines
"but life gives little relief
give us reprieve"
and
"i can't be hard on you
'cause you know i've been there too"
describe their life and relationships just perfectly.
I listen to this song all the time and always think of GA

I guess I would assign Megadeth's "Hangar 18" to Fox Mulder. In fact, that is kind of perfect, especially since Mulder mentioned Megadeth in one XF episode:
Hangar 18
Welcome to our fortress tall
Take some time to show you around
Impossible to break these walls
For you see the steel is much too strong
Computer banks to rule the world
Instruments to sight the stars
Possibly I've seen to much
Hangar 18 I know too much
Foreign life forms inventory
Suspended state of cryogenics
Selective amnesia's the story
Believed foretold but who'd suspect
The military intelligence
Two words combined that can't make sense
Possibly I've seen to much
Hangar 18 I know too much

Rocket Man from Elton John reminds me of Bill Adama from Battlestar Galactica.
Rocket Man
She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...
And I think it's gonna be a long long time...

"Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas = Dean Winchester from Supernatural. It fits with his musical preferences and every time I hear that part of the chorus that goes "Carry on my wayward son/there'll be peace when you are done" I draw a shaky breath, cuz for Dean "done" = "dead." I always remember that one scene where he tells Sam that he'll never be done, not even after they've killed the demon that killed their mother and Jess. He's too damaged for a normal life now. He'll only find peace when he's dead.
Oh, Dean.

Not the best choice, but I think "Learn to be Lonely" from Phantom of the Opera fits Dr. House:
Child of the wilderness
Born into emptiness
Learn to be lonely
Learn to find your way in darkness
Who will be there for you
Comfort and care for you
Learn to be lonely
Learn to be your one companion
Never dreamed out in the world
There are arms to hold you
You’ve always known your heart was on its own
So laugh in your loneliness
Child of the wilderness
Learn to Be lonely
Learn how to love life that is lived alone
Learn to be lonely
Life can be lived life can be loved alone

Ever since I saw a clip-video of Supernatural set to the theme song of "Pinky and the Brain" on youtube.com, I can't think of the Winchester brothers without it. Doesn't fit the entirety of the characters, but it fits the goofy spirit they bring to the show.

After that last epi of Battlestar Galactica, I nominate Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams as Col. Saul Tigh's official song...
I walk along the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the borderline
Of the edge and where I walk alone
Read between the lines
What's fucked up and everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone...
...My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone up there will find me
'Til then I walk alone...

When I hear "Sister Christian" now, I think of Studio 60's Harriet Hayes, even though, as with many of the above-cited lyrics, they don't entirely fit.
Sister Christian, oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one to say, OK
Where you goin', what you looking for
You know those boys don't want to play no more with you
It's true
[Refrain]
You're motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding Mister Right
You'll be all right tonight
Babe, you know you're growing up so fast
And momma's worrying that you won't last to say, let's play
Sister Christian, there's so much in life
Don't you give it up before your time is due
It's true, it's true, yeah
You're motoring
What's your price for flight
You've got him in your sights
And driving through the night
[Refrain thrice]
Sister Christian, oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one to say, OK
But you're motoring
Yeah, motoring

Queensryche's "Damage" = Battlestar Galactica's Kara Thrace.
...Psychoanalyze the chapters
On the path to my darkest days,
Searching for the answers,
All I see is damage through the haze...
...The one that lays beside me
Is sharing scars from my broken yesterdays -
Will tomorrow find me
Hypnotized, crying?...
...With the one that lays beside me
I'm healing scars from my childhood memories,
Tomorrow's finally found me,
I'm hypnotized, I'm trying
To understand the chapters
On the path to my darkest days,
Searching for the answers -
But there's DAMAGE...

Tori Amos's "Cooling" could work for any painful break-up on television. For example, Buffy and Angel (or hell, parts of this song could be applied to Angel and Darla).
Sample lyrics:
But do I hate what she is
But do I want to be her
And don’t we love something fresh
Anything new, virgin
~~~
So then love walked up to like
And said I know that you don’t like me much
Let’s go for a ride
This ocean is wrapped around that pineapple tree
And is your place in heaven
Worth giving up these kisses
These, these kisses
One of the most underrated bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Kinks' "Celluoid Heroes" for Joey from Friends. It's Ray Davies' bittersweet tribute to the movie stars of his younger years.
[i][i]][Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star,
And everybody's in movies, it doesn't matter who you are.
There are stars in every city,
In every house and on every street,
And if you walk down Hollywood Boulevard
Their names are written in concrete!
Don't step on Greta Garbo as you walk down the Boulevard,
She looks so weak and fragile that's why she tried to be so hard
But they turned her into a princess
And they sat her on a throne,
But she turned her back on stardom,
Because she wanted to be alone.
You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that you've hardly even heard of,
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.
Rudolph Valentino, looks very much alive,
And he looks up ladies' dresses as they sadly pass him by.
Avoid stepping on Bela Lugosi
'Cos he's liable to turn and bite,
But stand close by Bette Davis
Because hers was such a lonely life.
If you covered him with garbage,
George Sanders would still have style,
And if you stamped on Mickey Rooney
He would still turn round and smile,
But please don't tread on dearest Marilyn
'Cos she's not very tough,
She should have been made of iron or steel,
But she was only made of flesh and blood.
You can see all the stars as you walk down Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that you've hardly even heard of.
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.
Everybody's a dreamer and everybody's a star
And everybody's in show biz, it doesn't matter who you are.
And those who are successful,
Be always on your guard,
Success walks hand in hand with failure
Along Hollywood Boulevard.
I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.
You can see all the stars as you walk along Hollywood Boulevard,
Some that you recognise, some that you've hardly even heard of,
People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame,
Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.
Oh celluloid heroes never feel any pain
Oh celluloid heroes never really die.
I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.
In terms of lyrics, music, attitude, and theme, I cannot think of a more appropriate song for
Heroes' Hiro Nakamura than
this one. Well, except that it didn't really say much about stealing a sword or saving the world.
