MamaMeh, MamaYang, the mysterious Thatch, MamaCricket and her secret cupcake flavorin'...

The Fresh Prince was right: Parents just don't understand.
tvjunkie2008
The scenes between Cristina and MamaYang were some of the funniest scenes ever.
Gracelessly
I always thought Thatcher was dead, but maybe not, now that we know Meh's parents divorced several years ago.
tvjunkie2008
If Thatcher looks anything like George, I hope we see him soon.
LingPetunia
I thought Thatch was dead too, since the Chief said something along the lines of "I know it's hard, to not be the first one to go" to MamaMeh when she was bitching about Thatcher. And I know I totally butchered the line, but that was the gist of it.

Have we heard anything about George's parents? It seems like we have at least some information about all of the other interns' families but not his. Or am I right in dimly remembering that he was living at home at the very beginning of S1 and that he was desperate to move out because his mother ironed his boxer shorts?
Coma Girl
Not to forget McDreamy's mother, the former Miss Maloney. And Evil Spawn's father, the cowardly wife beater.

I get the impression George is the youngest and/or the only boy is his family. He reminds me a lot of a former co-worker with sisters who were much older than he and acted more like second mothers than sisters. I could easily see George's mom coming over to the intern house with food and fussing over George.
tvjunkie2008
I want to see George's mom! Especially if she's anything like you guys are describing her. That would be hilarious.

I'd love to see George's family on the show.
CrazyGorilla
Haven't most of them already been on the show?

George's dad and two brothers were a major part of the Thanksgiving show. They showed up at the house early in the day and made him go turkey hunting with them. He REALLY didn't want to go, but they kidnapped him.

They didn't ever mention where he fell in the birth order, but it was very clear that he was usually the odd man out in his family. Academic and thoughtful while his dad and brothers were hard-drinkin', good ole boy types. They played some game where one person would say the name of a car, and then the next person would say another car. I don't remember now what the point/object of the game was, but George clearly thought it was stupid and usually refused to play with them. They harassed him constantly in the special way that siblings have and he was not at all good natured about it. He felt like they had no understanding or interest in the things that he liked and they resented him for appearing to disdain all the stuff that they liked. As their day of hunting ended, the dad got shot in the butt and needed to go to the hospital where George had to dig all the pellets out of his dad's butt.

I kinda got the impression that George is the youngest O' Malley. His brothers look older than him, don't they ?

As a person of Irish ancestry, I was pissed off by the stereotypical caricature of George's family. They are depicted as nothing but working class, hard drinking, peasants and I resent that. There is a LOT more to being Irish than a love of Guinness or being downtrodden. My own ( Seattle based ) sister is one of the original 13 developers of Microsoft/Windows and is insanely sucessful and wealthy. She has many Irish born friends who also live in Seattle. They are opera singers, stay at home moms, elementary school teachers, Microsoft millionaires, investment bankers, cancer researchers, doctors and architects. You would never see that diversity on TV though, because God forbid they ever show an Irish person on TV, that isn't a rootsy peasant boozer, a repressed Catholic or a terrorist !

It is very cool that GA is all about breaking down racial barriers. But so far it's all about people of colour. That is fine, I have no problem with that. All I want is a recognition that racial sterotyping can take place just as much with white people as it can with black, just ask anyone of Irish, Italian or Polish ethnicity.

OK, am off my soap box now.

Well, George is none of those things, is he? So they are showing diversity.

No, but my point was more about his family than it was about him. He is brilliant and smart and bookish and the other rough, hard drinking sterotypically Irish male members of his family resent him for it. They ain't too bright and they think he is some sort of freak that is missing a crucial O Malley gene of manliness. That's what bugged me. It was Celtic cliche central, to me.

Speaking of Irish, I think McD's family is the reverse of such stereotype. I can see his sisters as being bossy/ballsy and very protective of him. Me think, he's the youngest of his family (like Geroge) except everyone in his family loves him. I can't wait for them to show up and put some prespective on McD and Addison.
mariovanpimples
Men are susposed to be hard drinking and rough (except if you're a WASP, Orthodox Jew, or Asian). 8) Smart, bookish guys have always picked in American culture. It's not just the Irish that fall prey to this sterotype. Ernest Hemmingway, Norman Mailer, Herny Miller, et al can be seen as a reaction to the intellectual as wimp setrotype.
smoothcriminal
Actually when Shonda wrote the characters she didnt give them a race. So George O'Malley wasnt neccessarily made out to be Irish, it just happens that TR was cast as he.

I understand what your saying Swipsey, stereotypes are annoying but if you think about it none of the characters except maybe Burke and McDreamy come from positive backgrounds.

I agree with your not wanting George to be a stereotype, Swipsey32. But I was not under the impression that George's bros really resent him. They gave him a hard time during Thanksgiving, but if he's the youngest of the boys, that's certainly realistic. And I don't think we were ever supposed to believe that the O'Malleys are hard drinkers. They were drinking on Thanksgiving, but I can safely say that lots of people drink on Thanksgiving -- that's why it's my favorite holiday :). We just haven't seen them enough to make any conclusions. If anything, in George's exchange with his dad when he was getting the bullet out, Papa O'Malley was saying that George has often used his doctor/educated status as a way to hold himself above the other members of his family. So if there is any resentment, it looks like it's more George-manufactured than the other way around.

Edit.

OMG, Liam Neeson is on an SNL rerun right now on E. His entire opening monologue was all about spoofing stereotypes of Irish people. Any and all things Irish was spoofed from Riverdance to Irish Spring to Lucky Charms and boozing sessions in the pub. It was hysterical ! Go Liam.
