This show has an amazing soundtrack, from Rilo Kiley to Mike Doughty to Tegan and Sara and the Ditty Bops and Thirteen Senses. Discuss.

Into the Fire: Thirteen Senses
Sunday: Sia
Tiger, My Friend: Psapp
The Dog Song: Nellie McKay

off the top of my head my favorite songs that I have downloaded because of GA... and of course the theme song *blushes* yes I like the theme song...
WesternSkies
Don't Forget Me by Way Out West, which played during the shaman ritual, is awesome.

ETA: Nope, Gracelessly -- I believe I am. That's impressive and rather peculiar.

(Oh, and I *heart* the theme song, too, while some of us are confessing.)

I actually superlove GA for using Mike Doughty. I totally dug Soul Coughing when I was in high school and had no idea MD was out on his own. I Hear the Bells, in particular, is uber-catchy.
Gracelessly
I think the first thing I loved about the show was that they used by favorite band - Rilo Kiley - in the opening scene.

Am I the last to know that Psapp - who perform the theme song - only play toys to achieve the desired sound?
wackychick21
I didn't know that about Psapp. Listening to the song, though, I can definitely hear it. That's cool. Now I might have to check out their other stuff...
Gracelessly
I really like "Chapter" by Psapp, which was played last season.
ClaireV
Love "I Hear the Bells" by Mike Doughty which plays when the helicopter comes in to land with the shaman on board. Not sure why a song that goes "Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum-be, Dum, Dum" does it for me, but there you go.
contrarianfreak
I think the song choices are great, but sometimes too obtrusive to the scenes. They could cut it back a little.
Gracelessly
I've felt that TPTB have cut back on songs for season two and when there have been songs they haven't been as intrusive as in season 1. But I didn't mind, because I liked the songs.

Let's hope they never have to play drama show staple "Hallelujah" (which, of course, I love, but that song gets played to death).
Drkangel
The only reason I started watching this show was becuase of the use of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service in the promos. Then I heard the opening theme, "Cosy in the Rocket" and I was hooked. Alexandra Patsavas, the Music supervisor, obviously has tastes that match my own. Favorites used so far in the series:

-Everything they've used by Tegan & Sara and Jem, especially "Where does the Good Go?" and "They". I've downloaded most of their stuff since the summer, and play it often.

-"Never Leave Your Heart Alone" by Butterfly Boucher. Very pretty and just seems to embody the MehcDreamy ship.

-"The Edge of the Ocean" by Ivy. Super mellow. I accidently downloaded initially and hated it, but it grew on me and now I love it.

ABC hasn't posted Sunday's music guide yet, but I thought the selection was great.

Edited b/c after all this time I still have trouble with code...

I love this song too, but for different reasons. cough *VM Soundtrack* cough. I'm just a little disappointed they cut it off before my favorite line, "You snooze you lose, well I have snost and lost."

Hee. Babsonite, me too.

I haven't checked out the official GA soundtrack yet, but I love most of the stuff they play. Can't say I'm crazy for the theme song, but it's growing on me as I enjoy the show more and more. (That Pavlovian thing where you know something good is coming) Can anyone recommend the soundtrack or should I just go find the individual songs that I like?

I actually kind of like the theme song, but I am biased because I liked PSAPP long before they were featured here. However, I'm not too fond of the credit sequences.

I download every single song played on GA thanks to a LiveJournal community. I'm addicted to the music this show plays, even if I have already got most of the songs.
Mama Tiger
I recently broke down and got the soundtrack, and I have to say for me it's well worth it. The music on this show is one thing I love so much about it -- they don't just recycle the same old crap, the music fits so well with the scene. "Don't Forget Me" by Way Out West during the shaman ritual is my total favorite from the whole show, so I'm hoping they'll put together a second season soundtrack, too.
WesternSkies
Just an FYI: Don't Forget Me is available on iTunes and well worth the $0.99, IMO. And I'm not usually into any kind of electronica/trance type stuff, but it's so gorgeous.
BostonsKrissy
Hey does anybody know if there's a Greys Anatomy Radio Station out there somewhere in web space? If yes could you possibly link it? Thanks in advance!

I heart you Babsonite.

I downloaded I Love the Rain the Most by Joe Purdy because it was forever stuck in my head. One of the best songs I've downloaded from the show yet!
LiliaNic
Emiliana Torrini's "Today Was OK" really grabbed me last week. SF Gate was offering free mp3s of her stuff, which I'm really enjoying.
Coma Girl
The best thing I've heard on GA (among the 57 songs I've got so far on my iTunes GA playlist) is Brandi Carlile's "What Can I Say." Especially after reading the music supervisor's comments about her on the official ABC site, I knew I had to buy her album. It's quite simply the best debut album I've ever heard and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Every song is brilliant. Her voice is amazing. I'm sure they'll be using more of Brandi's music in episodes to come.
ivandeloire
Hi everyone, first-time poster here after much lurking. Have watched every single episode at least twice, and the one rendition of a beautiful song that stands out to me is Inara George's interpretation of "Fools in Love" - it moves me to silence.
violet4120
One of my favorite songs from the soundtrack is Maria Taylor's "Song Beneath the Song." I just love it.

But of course I was hooked on the show's music with "Such Great Heights" and Rilo Kiley. Everything since has been wonderful.
bwshutterbabe
Does anyone know what the opening song to episode 2.4 was? (Aired 10/0/05)
Scheherezade
Catch My Disease by Ben Lee, according to the official site.
zoeyblue13
Love the music they use. I recently bought Mike Doughty's CD, and its great, so many good tunes other than the VM and GA used ones. Also purchased Brandi's CD, can't wait to get it.

Thank you so much for the recomendation Coma Girl. I downloaded this this afternoon and I'm in love. Very very beautiful and addicitive at that. Is half-an-hour of repeat on one song too long?
angelamyte
I've fallen in love with Interpol's Evil and Roison Murphy's Ramalama (Bang Bang) because of the show. There are a ton of songs I wouldn't have EVER listened to, if it weren't for this show.
Enigma13
I love most, if not all, of the songs that they use on this show, but sometimes it feels like they're putting it in just because they can. Sometimes it gets a little distracting and seems out of place, but most of the time it fits quite well.
mentalpretzel
In my search for a certain song from season 1 ("Somewhere Only We Know by Keane") I found this site that lists the songs from each episode. I figured I'd share it, since it seems pretty cool.

I agree, they can be a bit overpowering. I also really love some of their selections, and hate on some of the others. That Keane song? Ew, man. And most of the music isn't particularly obscure. I imagine the music coordinator as a nineteen year old film student reading David Sedaris. It's the slightly more mature OC soundtrack.

I love that Keane song, Somewhere Only We Know. I bought their CD, Hopes and Fears, after hearing them on GA and I loved it.

I also like "Fools Like Me" by Lisa Loeb. Reminds me of the good old times when McD was chasing Meh without the Addison fiasco.

Catch My Disease by Ben Lee
In Australia we've just seen 2.4, and I actually squealed when I heard Ben Lee. My love for that song knows no bounds. It's pretty big down here (and deservedly so IMHO) so I found it increadibly cool hearing it on GA.
Drkangel
mentalpretzel- Thank you for that site! When I click a link it takes me directly to the song in the iTunes store. And that? Is sweet.
emma675
I'm still loving "The Edge of the Ocean" by Ivy and "Wish I" by Jem. I've created quite the playlist on my mp3 player thanks to GA.
shashiekeat
I too purchased Brandi Carlisle's CD, which is awesome, and to the poster who asked if keeping a song on a one hour repeat is too much, I answer not with this CD of Brandi's! I do the same thing!

I have made a season one and season 2 (so far) disk of the songs I particularly like from the show. "Don't Forget Me" and "Ramalama (Bang Bang)" are my current favorites.

If you use the GA Music Guide on the ABC website, and play them all (that are avaliable) in order by episode, it's actually really poetic. It's cool to see a method to their madness and that they aren't just picking songs just for noise or publicity. (cough*CSI*cough)

edit because I can't punctuate to save my life
ThoraSEB
I've been a fan of Tegan and Sara for over 5 years, and squeed when I heard one of their songs on the first episode (I think, I can't really remember).

It's so awesome that they've played so many of their songs throughout the two seasons.

If you haven't checked them out yet, please do! They're an awesome Canadian band!

This show truly plays some kick-ass music. LOVE it!!
katespade3
I love the songs off GA. One song to check out...Infinity by Merrick. Great.
girlatlarge

I generally love the music played on GA - it's freakishly similar to my own tastes. And if this makes me a David Sedaris-lovin' film student, then that's okay.

Props to the Music Supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas, for making me want to have her job.
defygravity
Does anyone know which song they played at the end of "Into You Like a Train"? It was when the girl was asking the man about heaven before she got pulled off the pole and Derek officially broke up with Meh while they were washing their hands...something like "it was summer time, we had too much time, we got ourselves in trouble, and we went to the beach, and then we crashed the car....I decided I should hide away...I did what I did because you loved me."
Obviously, a bunch of holes in the lyrics. I hope someone can help me out!
wackychick21
The song near the end of Sunday's episode was "Back Where I was" by The Hereafter. You can get it from their website.
Spaz Cadet
I found "Infinity" by Inara George on iTunes ... she's also the one who sang "Fools in Love," which you may remember from the first season for its haunting/sexy chorus, "everything you do, you do it for your baby love, your baby love."

Thank you, Shonda and sound direction people, for introducing me to Inara!

Also, I second the Tegan and Sara rec. They kick ass! And they're what, 18?

Now, as I said in the old thread, if only Sleater-Kinney could make a sonic appearance I'd about pee in delight. I mean, throw us PNW riot grrls a bone, wouldja?

ETA: And now I'm a couch potato. Yeah, that's pretty accurate.
ThoraSEB
Hey Spaz Cadet - Tegan and Sara are 25. They look a lot younger though!
Attaka
I heard Maria Taylor's Song Beneath the Song the other day while trying on clothes. Of course I was prompted to have a moment of delighted squee-ing that a song I'd discovered through GA was being played in a public place.

I tried to get this song on iTunes and it ended up being an all instrumental version? Anyone else find this? I agree that it's a fantastic song and I was really looking forward to having it :(

I, like a few others I've seen around the GA forums, have long been a lurker of TWoP. But now that they added GA, and especially this thread (thanks ottergreen!) I finally broke down and registered.

The first episode I watched of GA (a few ep's after the premiere) had Tegan and Sara at the end and I almost lost it (that same week the OC also featured my very favourite Stars song, it was a good week for Canadian Indie Rock in Hollywood :). I've been hooked ever since. I was peased to note that they recently played a T&S song from If It Was You (the album before their most recent one).

I like that they actually feature the music on GA instead of playing quiet snippets in the background. I think it works cause the music is always so well suited to the episode and the scene. I see songs I've loved forever in a new light after hearing them on the show (like Fix You Up by Tegan and Sara).
WesternSkies
L Mo, I have no idea about that. I got it from iTunes and it's definitely not instrumental. Maybe there are different versions? The album the version I have is from is titled "Don't Look Now."

I imagine the music coordinator as a nineteen year old film student reading David Sedaris.
I imagine it more as a 24 year old creative writing student reading Chuck Klosterman. Heh. But hell, I like The O.C. soundtracks, too.

I have a GA iTunes playlist with 73 damn songs! I think I may have projected some stuff onto there -- that seems like an excessive number of songs.

Catch My Disease by Ben Lee
em-jay, I live in Australia too and as soon as Catch My Dissease came on, I was ecstatic. I love Ben Lee.

And I am now officially in love with whoever does the music on this show.

The promos for next week with Rilo Kiley's "Portions for Foxes"? I am so in love.
WesternSkies
Anyone know what song was playing about midway through the ep, when Yang was all "we're a couple" to Burke while she was standing on the stairs?
Gracelessly

The promos for next week with Rilo Kiley's "Portions for Foxes"? I am so in love.
I hope they use another RK song. They've used multiple Tegan & Sara songs, RK (my fave band) deserves the same. There are so many that come to mind - "Science vs. Romance," "Accidentl Deth" (spelled incorrectly on purpose, if you were wondering) or "Does He Love You?". It would be cool if TPTB played a song from Jenny Lewis' upcoming album (out in January, I hear).
KarenKnits
Annie's "Chewing Gum" was playing when Alex brought Nicole to lunch.
I freaking love that song.

Must've run out of bands since they're recycling from OC.
Rilo Kiley's "Portions For Foxes" was played in the pilot, too. If they were recycling from the OC, they were doing it long before these previews.
homeymcgee
Too bad Rilo Kiley already got a good workout on the OC. They are the unofficial band for Marissa and Alex... I think both shows have the same music person. Must've run out of bands since they're recycling from OC.
