I thought it might be interesting to hear what people think are the best individual episodes of The Amazing Race. (Hope "Previous Seasons" is the right forum to post this in).

Final episodes, I think, are usually better because obviously you are hanging on tenterhooks waiting to see who's going to win the $1,000,000. Of all the finales, I like Episode 2-13 the best, both because of some truly hilarious moments ("I'm not gettin' it"), and the best finish ever, with Chris and Alex outracing Tara to the mat.

My favorite non-final episodes are, first, Ep. 1-9, "The Unexpected Twist", for all the drama and fateful decision-making in that episode--the desperate race for the Fast Forward, Momily bailing out on the Detour out of sheer exhaustion, Kevin and Drew watching their chances slip away as they frantically hunt for a car, and Guido's critical error. Next would be 7-4, for the drama of the brothers rolling their car, followed by one of the very few "footrace to avoid elimination" endings.

Well, that would be our nightmare episode...to this very day we have $1,000,000 bus ride dreams..."what if we took a taxi?"....sigh!

I bet. But it made for brilliant television.

A couple of individual episodes stick out for me - The first one in the Phillipines in season five, where Colin+Christie get yielded and with their most hilarious of meltdowns... the only downer is that it was a non-elimination. Drat.

South Korea in season 4 was pretty good because of all the interesting tasks - the diving in a frozen lake, breaking boards with hands, octopus eating... but again, non-elimination. Drat.

Ethiopia in season 6 also had interesting tasks, beautiful rural scenery, and was the elimination of the most appaling team to ever run the Race, so it holds a special place in my heart as well. :D

I think the Nutbunches ep in TAR4 was the best: two teams going for the FF, which ended up being one of the best ever for sheer "cuteness" factor; major Killer Fatigue on a few teams' parts (Kelly and Jon getting lost in the beginning, and Millie and Chuck the rest of the leg) causing important mistakes; the difficulty level of both of the tasks (getting the nutbunches into the truck and climbing up the ladder); and the best race to the pitstop in TAR history (IMO), from the roadblock to the end of the leg.

I think the Nutbunches ep in TAR4 was the best
See, you say nutbunches ep in Tar4 and I automatically think of Chip as he emerges from the ice dive. It has nothing to do with those prickly plants from hell that they had to haul around.

My favorite ep was the season finale of season 1, cuz he did it with his best friend! I also love the episode with Kris' and Jon's romantic swim with the locals.

I have to say the first episode in the first series...I finally saw it after weeks of trying! VCR or TIVO was on the blink..I was away, GSN scheduling not up to par.

I saw it for the first time today after many other episodes of TAR....I loved that they started in Southern Africa - outside of the comfort zone of many racers and literally dropped them in it from the start! I bet many of the later racers would not coped so well...far too much spoonfeeding and mollycoddling in recent episodes.

Oh yeah! My all time favorite finish! Really, what a raaaaaaace should be.
pujolsistheman
Just read an interview with Deana where she talks about how much 7-4 haunts her. Apparently, they had no idea the brothers were so close behind them, and she is still kicking herself for not driving up closer to Phil.

What's not to love in an episode abounding with: clowns and virgins and wives of professional athletes; two of the most bone-headed transportation errors in any season; fiacre-gate; sneaky teams carrying bass fiddles in and out of doorways; Vienna in winter; Amazing Yellow Lines so complex that they're hustled on and off before you can tell that they're going in circles; the best fast forward evah; more mangling of the German language; asthma; bungy jumping, two separate apologies, and the music!
It's 4-3 for me!
Nutjob
One of my favorites is 4-10, with the squirming octo-bits, ice diving, and ClownJon's awesome board breaking display.

Another is 3-4, where Heave got heaved for thinking "walk" means "take a taxi."

Finally, there is good old 5-11, with Christie proclaiming that all the other teams "suuuuuuuck", only to wind up with a Yield, the broken ox, her utter meltdown in the jeepney ("Because they didn't play fair... they yielded us" *with hand gesture*).
DanaMB

ClownJon's awesome board breaking display.
Definitely one of the sexiest episodes!!!
Malibu Stacy
I agree with 4-10.

Also 3-4(?) when no one put diesel in their cars, and Ian fixed his by himself on the side of the road? Too cool. And Flo was too chicken to rappel. Too funny!

5-4 was good - St. Petersburg, Colin and Christie losing a good lead to Chip the eating machine, and probably the most beautiful pit stop ever with Catherine's Palace.

5-10, with gorgeous New Zealand, that fun-looking water detour, the moms placing second, and zorbs, zorbs, zorbs!!

5-12, where the moms lose to C&C on the cliffs. Tragic, but terrific TV.

6-3, with Lena and Kristy and Haygate. Again, tragic but terrific TV.

Definately! I don't think any of the recent winners would be able to survive series 1! Rob & Amber trying to manage the sand dunes, Freddy & Kendra in Alaska, Colin & Christie trying to figure out that they had to catch a ferry to Tunesia.

Nope, Series one was the best IMHO!
TPorter2
5-2, Foam Club, Ferry & Perro vs Tango, Alison and Donny go from first to worst.

4-2, Chris and Amanda go from first to worst, with the Venice Roadblock. Reichen holding his place by holding on the door.

Dieselgate version 1.0 was a great episode. Most notable for the fact that I actually found Ian almost hot for doing that gas thing. The feeling went away after awhile, but still. I likes me the manly men doing the manly things.
TropGirl
I don't know if any single episode of television will ever touch the brilliance of Season 5's "It's OK, Just Run Them Over," wherein Colin's encounter with an ox sends him slipping into madness. Chip casting frightened glances at Colin as Colin glares; threats to mow down innocent bystanders, Christie examining her nails as Colin begs for help, and Colin's final besieged look at the heavens, which was like something out of an old Charlton Heston biblical epic.

Just awesome.

Well two of my favorite scenes are from season two. The slang road block in Australia is wonderful, I understand it's very popular. I also happen to love the scene of Wil trying to destroy the ice ball, he tried every tool in the bag for about 15 seconds each while Tara got more & more scarcastic & you could just see him channeling his frustration with her. It's hillarious.
EddieDean
For me, my favorite episodes are often more about the locations than the events. For example the Sahara in Season 1 (Paul/Amie eliminated, ep 5 I think), Season 2 sandboarding in the desert (ep 4) and the middle of the Austrlian Outback (ep 10 maybe? - Gary/Dave eliminated).

Really I think some of the locales in the early season were much better than many of the later seasons....I guess I like seeing the teams in remote places. More recent races are a bit more city focused or at least near a city - not often they get out in the middle of nowhere.

I had always thought that comparing the episodes would someday make a good "game" for the Whimsy section....using SeaBreeze's "Race" format per season.

Also wonder if this topic belongs in Whimsy too.
Nflux Forever
My favorite episode comes from, ironically enough, from my least favorite season, Season 4. It was the episode when Millie and Chuck got Philiminated. It had everything. M&C imploding from killer fatigue. Jon telling Kelly to go "F" herself and her not taking any of his crap. Not to mention M&C's and K&J's roadblock duel and race toward the Pit Stop, which leads Millie and Chuck's heartbreaking elimination on the mat.
DoubleTee
There are three episodes that still give me goosebumps all these years later:

1-1: Because, hello, TAR! Welcome to my life.

2-8/2-9: The two-parter where they go from Hong Kong to Sydney. My very favorite leg of the race EVAH. Come shopping with Danny & Oswald, won't you? And, please, join us in the luxury car on our trip out to the airport. Watch with glee as Wil AND Blake fuck up the Roadblock in Sydney, contrasting that with Oswald ROCKING IT hard.

4-9: I got lots of love for this season, and this particular episode is STELLAR. Enjoy the morning condensation, ride uncomfortably along in The Car Of Millie, Losing Her Ever-Lovin' Mind (tm Miss Alli), and one of the few epic races-to-the-mat in the show's history. Also? Oranguntans!
Miss Alli
Wil trying to destroy the ice ball is probably the drop-dead funniest thing that ever happened on the show, if you don't count classic banter from the awesome comedy teams. If you're just talking about things that looked hilarious, I don't think anything can touch Wil and the ice ball.
MisterMcGee
Could a more apropo task have happened to a more deserving person? I don't think so. That ice ball was awesomely funny.

Besides the Season 1 finale, I'd have to say my favorites would be the Nutbunches/Millie and Chuck elimination episodes for the sheer racing between them and Jon and Kelly.

I also just love, love, love the Vietnam episode from S3 when Derek and Drew were eliminated. It just had that mixture of frustration and fatigue and the whole...unintended weirdness of Flo helping to seal the twins' fate. That was such a heartbreaker.

S5's finale with Chip and Kim's win will hold of special place in my heart for the great finale and enjoying the roar of the Tarcon crowd when they won.

Two faves:

Season 4, Ep #3 -- The one where they go to Vienna. Being a musician, I mostly like this one because it had a classical music detour (Mozart or Beethoven). Plus, there was all that Fiacre drama, and who can forget Steve & Dave's "greenpeace" comments about taking the bungee jump!

Season 7 Finale -- If only to watch Rob eat it. 0 for 3, buddy!

Tenderfoot
Wil and the ice ball was pure Wile E. Coyote. He did everything but jump up and down on it.
auntlada
I love Colin and the Ox, but I think I like the recap of the event even more than the episode.

Easily my favorite episode of TAR ever. I also loved seeing Flo look kind of stupid talking about going home and losing to old people, only to find out that it was NEL time.

That's mine too (look upthread)! Do we have to get married now?

The champagne and waltzing FF is the best one ever. Very difficult to complete, but really fun to watch.

Episode 3-11 is probably my favorite. The combination of a truly "exotic" country (Vietnam) with all of the great story lines (the semi-redemption of Ian, Flo's continued descent into madness, the tragic end of the Brothers' alliance as they raced to avoid elimination, and Flo unwittingly (?) helping Ken and Gerard at the expense of her new race boyfriend) was some mightly fine television.
Kstar
I have a lot of favorite episodes for a lot of different reasons:

I think the Wil vs. ice ball; Colin vs. ox; and Colin vs. Kenyan taxi driver are two of my all time favorites. I don't think any future ep. of TAR will match these.

I also like in S7 when Gretchen climbs that wall using a rope ladder. That woman is awesome and if they ever do another AS edition I hope they are included.

Chip and Kim winning always makes me tear up, too b/c out of all the seasons, IMHO they are the most deserving winners :)

Edited to say that anything involving a Flo, Mirna, or Jonathan breakdown is also comedy gold.
Arrow
3-5: Dieselgate--this episode alone made me think that perhaps reality tv is worthwhile. Five teams all dealing with it in completely different ways? Fascinating!!!

This was actually the second episode of the entire series that I watched. It definately is part of the reason I'm still here five years later. Of course, the first episode, when Heave got, well, heaved, was nice too.

The first three episodes I thought of were Colin vs. the ox again, the absolutely beautiful first Egypt episode of that season (5-5, I think? The one with the friggin' Sphinx as the pit stop,) and the episode of season 10 with the rap/classical detour. Yes, I know it had a real train wreck feel, but it was one of the few detours that made you exercise your creative skills, and few things on this show made laugh as hard.

I have three favorites:
1.10 "To The Physical and Mental Limit"--Rob & Brennan, dirty, wet and shirtless. I also loved the tasks, especially Rob & Brennan and Frank & Margarita challenging each other.
1.13 "Race to The Finish Part 2"--Rob and Brennan win, beating Frank & Margarita on their home turf while the Guidos are back in snowy Alaska.
3.5 "Dieselgate"--as someone mentioned above, it is classic. I never suspected so many people never learned to make sure which type of fuel you were using--other than my college roommate, that is.
3.10 & 3.11--actually the entire season because I am just in awe that Zach didn't give in to the temptation to heave Flo into the waters of Vietnam and leave her there.
Halloween Mojo
My favorite episode ever was just on GSN this weekend.

Charla and Mirna are eliminated in Africa.
kalystia1983
The Colin and the ox episode just replayed on GSN, and I had forgotten how funny it is. My roommate and I almost fell off the couch we were laughing so hard. Definitely my favorite episode!

I just read Miss Alli's recap of her top 10 episodes, and I must say WELL DONE. I greatly admire your reasoning for that last one on your list. And kudos for writing such a recap without ever once having to refer to a certain Asshat.
kafski
I greatly admire your reasoning for that last one on your list.

I do, too. I was certain that Colin and The Ox would be number one and was (at first) disappointed that I was wrong. Your picks makes a lot of sense, though, and wasn't one I thought would even be on the list.
Blucasbabe
Miss Alli just made me remember everything I love about this show, and why I have invested six years in obsessing over it.

The only ep I was hoping to see on the list that didn't make it, was the 2-hour season 5 finale. I loved the way Linda and Karen almost beat Colin and Christie, but then sucked it up and treated each other like adults when they couldn't. And then the final race to the mat, and the way I cheered when Chip and Kim's minivan pulled up instead of Colin and Christie's Town Car--well, that was just a good feeling, to see them win. Good times.
Miss Alli
Two things:

1. Yeah, there were ones it was hard not to include. Lena and Kristy's hay bale incident duked it out with the Gaghans for that last spot, and the S5 finale would have also been a worthy choice.

2. They're not in any particular order. I can't really judge, like, Brian and Greg smoking Ray and Deana against that Gaghan ep, so I didn't even try, heh.
Rinaldo
A beautifully done Extra, and a pleasure to read, as always from this recapper.

The episode I was always sure was lurking on the next page, because it had to be among the top ten, was Season 2, Hong Kong to Sydney. The combination of happily being a Lion ("believe it or not, I'm window-shopping") while others freak out with paddles, Danny & Oswald's Day of Shopping/Frappucino/Limousine/BetterFlight while everyone else gets frustrated at the airport, and the Sydney Slang Walk complete with "Return to your partner???" -- it just doesn't get better than that.

But that's not a complaint. Just an acknowledgement that we are all, indeed, different, and reading each other's differing perspectives is one of the great things about this site.
Miss Alli
That was the one I was probably the most sad to exclude. That was definitely #11.
Wry Bread
Aww, this was a nice surprise! I hadn't thought of Wil and the iceball and the Milliemole/Werewolf/Jon/Kelly showdown in ages. Warm fuzzy memories.
BoDiva
That was a perfect appetizer that leaves me hungry for the season. I do wish I'd seen the first three seasons (we don't get GSN here). Maybe I'll put season 1 on my Christmas list.
Miss Alli
It has just been pointed out to me that in the wildness of adding and cutting episodes from my list, I wound up with...nine. Instead of ten. We'll fix the title, and I either will or won't add the last one tomorrow morning, depending on whether I have time. Oh, the perils of not recounting enough times.

Sorry, y'all.
thuganomics85
Loved the list. The one episode that I haven't thought about in a while, that the list brought back memories of was S3 "Don't Try To Play The Moralist Now!" I remembered how much I loved that episode. On one hand, it was sad watching Derek/Drew get eliminated, but I loved how mature they and Ken/Gerard, when they past each other at the ferry, even though both teams figured that the twins were doomed. No bitching from the Derek/Drew; no taunting or celebration from Ken/Gerard. Alliances on this show usually suck (Backpack Alliance), but I remember how much I loved that foursome.

And I don't care how long it is, Colin's "My ox is broken!" will never get old.
Bertson
Having only watched S6-11, I feel pretty left out of most of these. I think my favourite is probably still 7-9, when Rob tries to trick Gretchen into thinking there's an earlier flight, and then it turns out there is in fact an earlier flight, and also has Kelly telling Ron that he got out of the Army by being a POW. It's a cavalcade of laughing at the stupidity of these people.
monalisa
I feel that all is now right with the world again. Tonight I casually checked the TWOP website and saw The Amazing Race recap. Hurrah!

I'm sorry to say that I originally started the first season watching the "Lost" tv show and being outraged that CBS moved the season premire of TAR up so it played opposite "Lost". It was quite a controversy at the time. Luckily, I would tape one show while watching the other and quickly became a fan of TAR.

I feel the need to add to the best episodes list by noting my favorite recap details. I'm sorry but I don't remember specific seasons or episodes, they tend to blend together.

First, Miss Alli as recapper - witty, insightful and fashion conscious
The season where each recap began with a mini travelogue for each country
The occasional rants on the jerkiness of certain personalities or game changes
The psychological profiles of contestants which totally explained why they acted as they did
and the perfect quote "God is in the Tub!"
