I guess the fact that after 4 years there isn't a thread for this show proves that no one is watching. Even if there was a thread, I'd make a new one anyway, because holy retooling, Batman!
They fired eveyone but Arnez & Brianna, and they're phasing out Flex, who CO-CREATED the show. UPN is really following the WB's blueprint, huh? Build your network on "urban" comedies and then whitewash the hell out of it.
I'm just...wow, that was shitty. I can't even find the words. It's
Room & Bored come to life. Who in their right mind hires Ray-J? Fucking Ray-J! It's good to see Kel from Kenan & Kel, but that one girl wasn't even good enough for Hope & Faith, does that tell you anything?
I just can't wrap my brain around it.
For some reason, Black Voices doesn't archive their articles, but
here's one from the summer about the massive firings.

I have no earthly idea what happened to a show I loved when it first came out. I stopped watching before the first 10 minutes. This show is going down the toilet fast. They need to pull the plug on this mess quick, fast, and in a hurry.

I watched it last night. It felt like a completely different show. My good lord was it bad. It made last season look good, and that was atrocious!

I was one of the few who watched previous seasons too but when I read the episode description and saw that it revolved around Briana and Arnez with no Flex coming out to Cali to retrieve Brianna or something to that apsect I knew that I wouldn't be watching this season. I turned on Arrested Development and was disappointed when household duties got in the way of me watching it. Oh well, maybe UPN will pull it midseason or something. I didn't know about any firings though. That's too bad.

This show has always been pretty sucky, but at least it was somewhat watchable. Now with the addition of Ray-J, and whoever the rest of those new people are, the show is just unbearable. Why is it that shows continue to add Ray-J? First Moesha, then 106 and Park, now this show. Ray-J, please go play in traffic or something.

Heh...I had no idea this thread has been started, let alone it started a month ago. I confess to watching this Season 1 for a quick minute but I quickly (three episodes) got annoyed with the characters and quickly dropped it from my rotation.
When I heard about the changes, especially the focus shifting to Brianna & Arnez, I knew if it didn't jump the shark in Season 1, then it definitely did now. I could never stand Flex but I thought it was wrong for UPN to do him that way. But no worries. I think this is definitely One on One's last season.
Ray-J, please go play in traffic or something.
Ok. That had me rolling.

Damn, first they take "Homeboys From Outer Space" off the air and now this. Flex Alexander just can't catch a break! I didn't even realize they'd fired everyone. Show re-structurings of this magnitude are definitely a bad sign. There's nowhere to go but down (or in this show's case further down). Ray-J's like the black Ted McGinley. Or the blacker Bumper Robinson. TV show death. And that Robert Richard has always looked way too much like a close family friend for me to like. And Kyla Pratt has always got on my last nerve. Can they put this show out of its misery, already?

LMAO.
I hate that they re-tooled the show. I actually liked "One on One". I didn't find it any more treacle than those 80's TGIF shows like "Boy Meets World" and "Full House".
I'm hoping against hope that the retooling doesn't pan out and they go back to the old format. This "California Dreams" meet "Parkers" mess isn't getting it.

You get major cool points for invoking the name of Bumper.
There was an article a few years back after Josh Henderson was on the show about the sad fact that "urban" comedies had to "whitewash" their shows at time by bringing in White actors (like when they added Freddie's cousin on "A Different World"). I didn't mind Josh Henderson, hell, I could look at him all day. But it's a sad fact that they had to not only revamp the show, but add three non-Blacks on the show. Am I to believe that Breanna, Arnaz and Ray J are the only three Black people at the college?

Between this, Lynn's new "friend" on Girlfriends and Joey freaking Lawrence on Half & Half, the whitewashing is in full effect this season. They even added a new blonde on Cuts, and it's hard to get whiter than Shannon Elizabeth. Somehow they managed.

Wow, TPTB really dropped the ball on this one...Are we really supposed to believe that all of the girls sleep in one room and all of the guys are in another? PLEASE. They could have gone the A Different World route and show us Breanna and Arnez living in a dorm. As strict as Flex was with her in previous episodes, I find it hard to believe that he would let them live together...

In defense of these shows, it's not really the same when you add someone as a guest star. The world is made up of people of different colors and backgrounds and tv should reflect that.
I am only troubled when it feels forced or contrived, the way it does on OOO and CUTS. And in the case of OOO actors of color were clearly replaced. That's where it gets scary. These people are in the main titles. They are the show.

Um...yeah, a LOOOOONG bump, but this show isn't worth starting another thread on when it's now been thankfully cancelled.
I did used to like this show until about season three, when it became all about Brianna and Arnez and their UST. And I watched one episode the episode this seaosn withthe Halloween party and tuned out in disgust after fifteen minutes.
What the hell??? I mean, seriously, outing the guy who co-created this show? Grrrr....

Thanks for the bump if only for me to add, thanks goodness that is over.
I watched the first season and maybe the second. I liked it. It wasn't the best but it wasn't terrible either. It could have matured. I lost track of it in season two or three, can't remember, b/c of school. When I came back, no Flex? WTH? All about Branez? Ok, except for the fact that Brianna was working my last nerve. Too grown. Needed to be knocked down a peg or two.
Man, Flex needs a good series that wants him for the long haul. So it might need to stay away from CW since it is the spawn or the WB and UPN, two networks that haven't treated him right.

I'd usually watch this during the summer or anytime other shows were in repeats. I liked it during the first season although I didn't care for Flex's best friend most of the time. I couldn't stomach the last season and never figured out out you could get rid of Flex and call it the same show..

Word on that. Just call it The Brianna and Arnez show and be done with it. The way this show's been turned on it's head is akin to re-making Star Trek so that Spock and the Vulcan race are blood-thirtsy warmongers andhumans as xenophones.
UGH! I can't imagine any parent willingly allowing their duahgter to move across country to live with her boyfriends at the age of...eighteeen? ninteen? I forgot how old that girl is now. In any case, I'd have had a long ass fight before sending any kids of mine to live with a girlfriend/boyfriend.

I understand that completely, but I think she moved in the context of they were both going to school and living off-campus. Was that just wishful thinking on my part?

That's always been my problem with her. That sassmouth had me wondering when she was going to get smacked.
I liked One-on-One: The Flex years because it addressed alot of teen issues which need to be addressed and for the most part I think it got it right (with the exception of him not grounding Brianna for life because of her sassmouth).

I think it's sad the only reason I turned to this show is when the white dude was guest starring a few years ago. I feel like a traitor or something. He was just so cute. Then they made him dumb. Then I realized that I didn't really like the show. And now I'm glad it's cancelled.

Yep, Josh Henderson. He was hot, even though the way he treated Ashlee supposedly was doggish.
He was also on FX's "Over There".

Every time I pass UPN when this is on, I get sad. I miss Dwayne! I miss Josh! I miss how they both interacted with Arnaz! The two of them had so much more chemistry with the guy than Breanna has ever had.

The show has thankfully been put out of it's misery. I hope TPTB think it was worth it to waste the final season with that bullshit. The show is going into syndication in the fall, I've been seeing commercials for it.

The show will be airing on
The N soon. I wonder if they'll run it into the ground the way the did Moesha. It'll be good to see the early seasons after that crap UPN did to it last year.

I never watched this show when it was on UPN despite being an avid Girlfriends fan (minus this season) 'cause I thought it was just another stupid "The Parkers" type show. But, I've been watching the reruns on The N and what a cute show. Kyla Pratt is just adorable and it's just fun and easy to watch. I like the dynamic between her and her Dad.

Why does this show seem semi-watchable now that it's on The N? It's like I can accept the lightweight humor of it all within the context of a kid's network.

Bumping this thread to say Josh is so damn sexy. When he left the show, I was done. (Though now BET's airing it, and I try to watch the episodes he's in.) How the hell do you pick Arnaz over that hotness?

Ha. How funny. I was going through some old tapes last week and I came across all of the One on Ones I taped (ahem...the ones with Josh). Such a cutie. And I think I've said this before, but I thought it was silly how they made him such an idiot when they wanted to get Arnez and Brianna (back?) together. When Arnez was being a hater, I liked how Josh would just be like, "Uh, whatever, I got the girl."

Arnaz is fug. A nice body means nothing if you have the face of a turtle soaked in formaldehyde.
