After watching the H:LOTS crossover episode, I can't help but think of Thief, Andre Braugher's new project, slated to air on FX. I've heard about this project a for almost a year ago, but I still haven't heard of anything new. If it's any good, it really puts FX's programming to HBO's level (I think). I'd watch Andre Braugher in anything (OK, maybe not Hack {speaking of that, what a waste of Braugher and David Morse's talent in that crappy show!}) Does anyone know any scoops, like when it's supposed to air? Let the discussion begin!
ciscokidinsf
Yeah, totally excited about the show. The previews on Nip/Tuck still indicate a 6 months wait. The show won't be airing until the summer. Besides Andre Braugher, it has the masterful Yancey Arias from my much lamented and extremely great show 'Kingpin'. Also, Malik Yoba will be there. The big surprise was Linda Hamilton! Looking as haggard as she did on Terminator 2. She may not look older, but she sure don't look any better.

Hope the plot has changed, 'cause the original concept was a rip-off of 24, where all the episodes revolve on a single heist.

I'll be there. If anyone has a peeked at this show. Let us know.
Sylph
Summer? The F/X preview said that the show would be coming in March. I'm pretty certain that was said in the promo and hopefully not wishful thinking on my part.

So cisco...we meet again. *laughs* I immediately squealed when I saw the preview for this show. The concept, the overall look, and the actors got me. Just seeing that Andre Braugher, Yancey Arias (laments over Kingpin), Malik Yoba, and one of the members of my list of tv boyfriends, Will Yun Lee, I cannot not watch.

Linda Hamilton? What the hell did James Cameron do to you?

Yeah, I'll be counting down the days until this premieres. F/X is the new HBO.

Okay, I saw the preview for this show on The Shield Tuesday night and it seemed very ambiguous to me. I mean, I can always get a fibe from a preview of a new project as to the basic premise. The Shield was about a dirty cop. 24 was about one day in the life of a federal agent. Deadwood was about the old west. This show...I have no idea. Even the title seems unclear.

If the show is due to be shown starting in March, then most of the season must be in the can by now. That means that scripts are available, episodes available for screening, etc. Anyone know the basic premise and character outlines? Maybe we'll get an idea from the Winter Press Tour.
Dispatcherbert
I just wanted to chime in that I plan to give this show a try when it comes on. I've always loved Andre Braugher and have missed seeing him in a quality show ever since he left H:LotS.

And I, too, mourn the passing of Kingpin. Imagine if FX had been the powerhouse back then that it is now and had picked it up. Wow!
bobkatt13
Also Ann (her?) freom arrested development is going to be on it. I know it is going to be hard for me to watch this show when ever she shows up and a character asks about her il be yelling back at the screen her?

Thief

Some details above about the synopsis, doesn't look like they're going for a single heist an episode.

Got it. I get a clearer picture now.
yes please
FX busted out the commercials for this during the Black. White. premiere tonight. I haven't really given FX's dramas a chance (The Shield seems to suffer the same flaw as The Sopranos from where I stand [glorifying mobsters/corrupt cops, people whom I can't establish a rooting interest in] and Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me have been too outré for my taste), but I'm a big fan of AB and it looks interesting.

Premieres Tuesday, March 28th, 10PM ET.
Gondorff
During Black.White. on Wednesday night (3/15) there will be a 2 minute Thief "preview trailer" It will also be shown in the season finale of "The Shield" which airs on 3/21. The show is great. AB is amazing, Malik Yoba is fantastic, and Clifton Collins jr (fresh off his wonderful performance in "Capote") is terrific. Trust me, it's not your avarage "steal something" show. There are some interesting plot twists and character developments that make the story much more interesting than just a heist drama.
Andrew J.
They're only doing six episodes, but there's a good chance they'll do 13 for the second season if it does well--and it really deserves do. Imagine a series built around Braugher playing Roberr De Niro's character in HEAT and you've got a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Flood control isn't letting me post so I'll have to imporvise a [Quote].
From 'Sylph' upthread.

"F/X is the new HBO."

My response:
WORD!

I've been super excited for 'Heist' on NBC. But this actually looks MUCH better.
LisaM
Saw a big bus stop ad for this today in NYC. It is filled with the faces of the cast - all revolving around Andre Braugher.

They're both very good, but they're entirely different: Heist is a lightweight caper that plays kind of like Quentin Tarantino crossed with Amy Sherman-Palladino, if you can imagine such a thing, while Thief is dark, dark, DARK. The debt to Michael Mann is pretty enormous, but it comes across much more as a homage than ripoff.

I can't wait for this show. The commercials pulled me in. I love AB. And I'm kinda excited to see Linda Hamilton. I hope it remembers when it comes on b/c I don't usually watch F/X.
Darn
Does anyone know the name of the song used in the promo? It's soft and melodic and I've heard it somewhere before...though I can't even remember the lyrics but I know I like it.
hookahmasta
It's a cover of Tears for Fears "Mad World" by Gary Joules. Awesome song.
Christabelle
Does anyone know if Thief has been picked up in Canada? I love Andre Braugher and it would be great to see him in a top-notch drama again.
Darn
Thanks, hookahmasta. Much appreciated.

Tuesday nights? Damn, don't the tv people realize that some other nights (like Monday!) could use some shows, too? Post hurricane, I have only one recording device! Does FX generally rerun episodes so I can tape it another night or time?
Brandon
FX shows usually rerun Friday at eleven. and I think Sunday at ten.
mistiec
Just wanted to remind everyone: This show premieres on FX tonight @ 10:00PM.
Kalbear
I really want this show to rock hard.
bobkatt13
Was it just me but when you first see Andre's house the lamp has HER on it. If it does thank god for AD.
aithne414
The verdict? I loved. Braugher is in fine form, and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the cast, too... FX has a thing for their cute, dysfunctional male bonding groups, don't they? "You have to deal with what you're feelin, all right?" Heh, and aw. :) The daughter's actress is really, really good, too.
Bix
They really shouldn't have telegraphed Wanda's death in the promos the way they did. Poor, hot Dina Meyer. Otherwise, really good stuff.
hachurui
Yeah, Mae Whitman was great. Good acting and writing all around. However...not sure I will continue to watch because crime drama isn't my favorite genre.
darkguardian
Fantastic stuff, its just so good to see Braugher back though he will always be Pembleton to me. The girl who plays the daughter did a phenomonal job. I hope this does well because I am very interested in how this show will pan out.
Traddles
I thought it was good but the wife's death was too convenient. Just once I'd like to see a character dealing with a spouse in constant rehab or constantly in the hospital. Love AB to death as usual though.
queenb

Yeah. I knew nothing about this show except it was about thieves and had good actors, so I decided to give it a try and I got worried when I realized the daughter was going to be a major character, but that girl was awesome!
Phane00
I thought it was a good start. AB was excellent, especially on the job. LH makes a great handler. Poor Dina Meyers, a potentially good show and she's written off in the first episode.

I thought it was good, but I expected something more along the lines of an hour-long Ocean's Eleven or Italian Job, where the job of the week is the main theme. Like a L&O from the thieves' point of view. Maybe a bunch of small weekly jobs building up to a huge job towards the season's end. I thought the mother and step daughter plots were too much and too forced, although I like that the step daughter has begun her thieving career.

Will definately be watching next week

I remember Mae Whitman as Clooney's daughter in One Fine Day. God, I'm old. In an interview about that movie, Clooney talked about the mad skillz Mae had, even as a tot. In one scene, she was supposed to cry over a kitten. She did a take, crying like a champ. The director asked for another take, with '30% less.' Which she then delivered. Which, according to Clooney, made him cry.

I just wish she'd do something else with her hair. The current 'do calls up a Linda Blair/Born Innocent vibe.

I kinda wish Dina Meyer had stayed alive; I was looking forward to exploring that marriage.

My, how Linda Hamilton's voice has gotten lower! She's edging into Suzanne Pleshette territory.

Oh, and Yancy Arias? Rrrowr.
Amierin
Excellent start. I was worried about the young girl being able to stand with the older actors but she was great.
AB was fantastic as usual.
The kid is already on her way as someone else said. If given half a chance she'll fit right in. Which is scary.
ciscokidinsf
Wowza. I'm in love. Great show to keep me busy while N/T returns. Or even further down. Had cool flashbacks to my much beloved series Kingpin when I saw Yancy Arias in a suit.

Andre Braugher, Yancey and Malik Yoba kicked all sorts of ass here. Even Clifton Gonzalez dialed it down a notch from his usual 'cholo gangbanger' performances to hit a good character.

Poor girl, What a bad couple of days, first booted from school, then your Mom dies, and the same night you find out your stepdad is up to no good and he killed someone in your backyard.

I was amazed at the acting chops of the former Mrs. James Cameron, Linda Hamilton still came out acting right.

What's with all the shows in San Francisco lately??!?? I work here and I nary see any filming. We have Monk, The Evidence, Thief, Touching Evil, etc...

I remember Mae from her recurring role on Arrested Development. It's good to see she didn't have to wait long before getting another good show.

I think Thief was only in SF the once, and will normally be based out of New Orleans, which I find interesting. I wonder if they planned it that way from the start and Katrina was a coincidence or if they changed it to NO after Katrina.
lynch
They actually shot the pilot several months before Katrina. When they got picked up they were about to start shooting again in New Orleans, but then Katrina hit again, so they were forced to find standins for New Orleans.
swansong
Have always had mad love for Andre Braugher and Malik Yoba so I was looking forward to this show, but I have to admit I didn't expect to enjoy it quite as much as I did. I think shows like Hustle have spoiled me though, because I wasn't expecting it to be quite so dark. I was expecting AB to be some sort of lovable rogue with a code. I'm really intrigued to see where this goes especially the relationship between AB and his step-daughter because I really felt for her in that scene when he comes to talk to her after she witnessed him killing that guy.

Based on the tight shots I am pretty sure they weren't in SF at all.
Dispatcherbert
I really enjoyed this. I hope it gets picked up since it would be really nice to round out The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me on FX.

While I knew Nick's wife was going to die in the pilot, they did fake me out to the extent that I thought the mob was going to kill her. Then I realized in the previews that they were slapping Linda Hamilton around.

Speaking of her getting the beatdown, WTF? Did she/they really think they could just return the money to the Chinese mob with no questions asked? Hmm...

I, too, concur that the actress playing Tammy did an outstanding job holding her own against the adult cast. This is the first thing I've seen her in.

Was the other black actor (the one whose wife was going to have a baby), in Kingpin also? He looks like the guy who played the DEA agent who was always getting high.

A definite keeper. I'll be back for more!

Edited because spelling is important and "mom" and "mob" aren't one in the same.

I believe that after the hurricane(s), they moved up to Shreveport, which is in the northwestern part of the state. It's big enough that it can stand in for New Orleans if you don't look too closely. And if they need a swampy place with some Spanish moss hanging around...they don't really need New Orleans for that.

DAMN! I missed it. Gotcha remember to catch it when it replays.

Mae will also be Ann to me from AD. AB will also be Pembleton. Malik Yoba will always be that detective from NY Undercover. (Brain fart b/ I can't remember his name right now.)

Glad to hear the show was great.
Sylph
Late with the reply but I can't agree more with what has been posted here.

I love this show. I do think it has earned its place on the F/X family tree. It was dark, unapologetic, and real. I am truly intrigued in the direction this show will go based on the previews for the upcoming shows.

Everyone was on point. It was wonderful to see AB at work, I missed watching him on my tv. Yancey, Malik, Will, etc....you couldn't ask for a better cast.

That was Ann from AD? I didn't recognize her until you guys mentioned it here. She more than held her own against the other actors. The scene where she discovered that her mother had died was so painful to watch because I felt her distress.

Malik Yoba will always be that detective from NY Undercover. (Brain fart b/ I can't remember his name right now.)

Wasn't his name Williams? I can hear Patti D'Arbanville's voice calling him and Torres when you said that.

Was the other black actor (the one whose wife was going to have a baby), in Kingpin also? He looks like the guy who played the DEA agent who was always getting high.

Yes he was. Malik Yoba was the undercover agent who got high in the strip club.
LisaM
I thought that this was okay. Andre Braugher and Mae Whitman were excellent but I wish that Dina Meyer had not been killed off for a few episodes. Would have been interesting to see how the marriage worked on a daily basis with Nick having such a big secret. I'll watch another episode - primarily to see how the relationship between Nick and his stepdaughter goes - but not sure beyond that.
Kalbear
AB is a fucking god.

That is all.
Rose Prose
Andre Braugher so better get an Emmy nomination for this.

She was also in the movie Hope Floats when she was about 9. There is a scene where her estranged father is leaving town and she tries to get into his car and he won't let her and she just sobs and it's absolutely heartbreaking. Sandra Bullock said in an interview that she asked Mae what she thought of to cry so hard and Mae said, "I thought about how sad it was that all those people died on the Titanic."
Orion7
AB is a fucking god.

Oh, yes. I loved the salt-and-pepper hair.

I love the darkness of this show - it is not a "look at the cute and cuddly thieves," show. The thieves have a bond, yet it is every man for himself at the drop of a hat.

I thought the cinematography added a lot to the show. The "San Francisco" scenes felt very different from the "New Orleans" scenes. The night scenes in AB's back yard, and down by the river when they disposed of their cokehead partner, really stand out in my mind. The lighting was excellent.

The plot is intriguing, but at this point I would still watch to see AB and Mae Whitman's scenes. Many of you have mentioned some of her credits; I remember her doing some great work as a guest star on CSI and on Cold Case.

Most of all, it is so gratifying to see AB back in a part that really uses his talents. I hope the writers can keep up the good work. I will always love Frank Pembleton, but this is definitely not Pembleton.
megsara
Will definitely watch the rest of the episodes. Good episode, highlighting what a good cast it is. I heard a lot of compliants about the pilot. I think it was a lot of set up, but I don't mind eps like that, and judging from the previews it looks like it sets up a lot of good stuuf.
nolakitty
I loved loved loved the first episode. The scene with AB and MW at the hospital after she's found her mother dead just floored me.

I only have one tiny nitpick as a New Orleans resident.... by the time they drove out of New Orleans proper and into a secluded enough swamp area to dump a body it should've been morning. (And really, the population is low enough here now that you don't need that secluded of an area to shoot someone. We've been learning that the hardway lately.)

Other than that I'm glad they didn't harp too much on the New Orleans issue. The sequence when AB is driving back into the city after the San Fransico job made me teary. It was beautifully done and very much felt like it feels to drive around here now. It was just beautifully shot and edited together and the music was perfect.

I hope they'll be able to bring production back more into the city too. We've got about 6 movies filming in the city right now. We're quite open for production business.
