Storm Shadow
Adam Carolla, known for his work on The Man Show, Crank Yankers and Loveline, is taking late night television back in the name of comedy. Sharp, witty and prepared to talk with anyone, Adam Carolla puts his own spin on the late-night genre, including interviews with celebrity guests, live phone calls from viewers and interviews with Adam and real people on the street. Adam gives his unique comedic take on the wide world of pop culture, all in front of a live studio audience.

Starts tonight right after "The Daily Show."

I saw this preview last night, and I was wondering what kind of sustained audience this show could get. As a fan of Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn (/ignores mocking), I admit to being annoyed that they canceled that show, and seem to have put nothing worthwhile in its slot.

(ETA: I'd rather watch Dr. Drew on Lifetime health on Wednesdays, but that's probably just me)
tothemax
I hope this show is cancelled quickly. I don't think he's funny and I don't think the 11:30 timeslot is right for him.

What an asswipe. He's arrogant, not attractive and not even close to being funny.
He's below Kathy Griffin's D list,,,he's about Y list.
Vulpes82
As a fellow Tough Crowd fan, dreamy, I totally agree with you!

Who keeps putting Adam Carolla on TV? He's so annoying and unfunny! And it's not even that he's pretty or anything! The two minutes (that's all I could take) of the show I watched were excrutiating. The theme? "Things that piss you off." Yeah, Adam, way to be creative! You're really shaking the foundations of comedy with that one. And I thought observational humor was over?
mbridgii
I didn't watch the show, but I think Carolla functions best as second chair, whether to Dr. Drew or Jimmy Kimmel. Working on his own, or as the lead isn't his strong suit. It was why I wasn't surprised when he left "The Man Show" when Kimmel did.

Based on what I'm reading, if he's just going to do the same stuff that DL Hughley and Carlos Mencia are already doing, why bother? Especially when (depending on your city) Jimmy Kimmel is already running on the other channel.

I'll try to watch sometime this week, just to see for myself.
Paws
I tried to give the show a chance. I lasted less than 5 minutes. The man's voice just grates, and his smug air of superiority ain't helping.
BetyBee
I actually like Adam on the radio, but his show definitely lacked creativity. He might as well have been on the radio. Donahue and Oprah stopped taking calls on air many years ago - and for a reason. TV is visual, and this was not visually interesting. It's Loveline without Dr. Drew. Certainly not worth staying up to watch.
Major Misfit
The theme? "Things that piss you off." Yeah, Adam, way to be creative!

And the first thing that pissed him off: Pandas. Pandas.

You know what pisses me off, Adam? Your show.
iMissEthan
Damn, that was one annoying show. There's no reason for this to be on TV. If you want to take calls from people who complain about things, go back to radio.

This is the biggest pile of suck since Chevy Chase tried to do late night. Comedy Central needs to kill this quick and hurry up with the Colbert Report.

Wow. Tonight's show is even worse. Hey Carrola, didn't anyone ever tell you to SHUT UP? And yeah, sexist crap is real funny you piece of shit.
Want2Sleep
This is the biggest pile of suck
Oh yeah....

Hey Carrola, didn't anyone ever tell you to SHUT UP?

He must have some inside info on someone,,,who in the hell ever thought up this show should be shot. The goof has zero talent.
yeahyeahyeah
Well, I saw a second of it where he was talking about the impossibility of stapler and scissor packaging, and I thought it was quite charming.
Storm Shadow

At least she got $60 out of the deal.
Eegah
Had anyone else pointed out how sick men in general are of Jennifer Anniston, it would have gone in the Hell Yeah thread. However, I'm keeping it out of there on principle.
Ellenore
God, I hate Adam Corolla. Sexist assholes get my ire, but if the sexist asshole can't even be funny, he's done. Cancel cancel cancel cancel cancel.

Anyone know the ratings?
skeevo666
Dr. Drew's sex talk show on Discovery Health is funnier. Sheesh . . .
Colonial Philistine
The funny thing is that the Sports Guy (whose writing I really like, and whom I think is quite funny) is a big Carolla friend and fan. Apparently, the Sports Guy thinks Carolla is funny.

Why, I have no idea.

Carlos Mencia, on the other hand . . . he's funny.
sallyrover
Beloved, brave Comedy Central--please cancel this sexist, grating gene-splice love child of Norm McDonald and Gilbert Gotfried ASAP. Bring on the Colbert! Colbert can show more wit with an eyebrow raise than this goofball can in 22 minutes of blather.
heebiejeebie
I loathed Colin Quinn. Simply loathed his poseur ass. And I would promise to sit and watch his sorry ass every night after TDS if Comedy Central would dump this crapfest.
Mimi10022
As far as I am concerned, there is only one reason to ever watch this jerk - Dr. Drew. Without Dr. Drew, who cares? WHY does he get work?
Bring on Colbert!
catrina
I have not watched this show yet but about a month ago I was telling my friend (who is a huge Loveline fan) that Adam was likely going to be leaving Loveline to do this show but also Howard Stern's show.

She pointed out to me that Adam's just got a personality for radio. TV has never been his thing because people don't really like assholes on their TV. Its really more of a radio kind of thing. Kimmel is more like the "good cop" to Adam's "bad cop." (same with Drew.) He needs a nice guy to soften his horrible personality. Plus, the way he's talked about this show on Loveline has reminded me of that old Billy Crystal move "Mr. Saturday Night." It was about a comic...I forgot who it was modeled after, that basically blew every chance he got with his prickly personality. I've always felt that way about Adam. If he was just a little nicer, a little more ready to play ball like Conan O'Brien or Jon Stewart or probably even Jimmy Kimmel...he could go beyond his radio show(s). But he's just too much of an asshole to do what every sucessful actor/comedian/director has to in order to make it. He thinks he's "above" it all and he doesn't realize that he's just a prick. Which is why he's never managed to permenantly move beyond radio. I think its why every time he gets a TV show he complains about the network that has him on it...whether its comedy central or MTV. I think the executives there get turned off by him personally and then never what to do anything for him. And then he blames the network for his shows' failures.
gnbhull
I emailed Comedy Central to beg them to cancel this crapfest. Hopefully enough people will complain to get rid of this. And they need to stop making Jon Stewart plug it.

I am yawning as I write this. For all the entertainment value we get from this show, Corolla could just sit there holding a sign that says

I hate women.
I am stupid.
I will bore you to tears.

At least then he would keep his moronic yap shut.
catrina
I finally watched a few minutes last night just to see what everyone was talking about. I haven't been face-to-face with Adam since his MTV Loveline years but was he always this fish-eyed? His eyes look like they are on opposite sides of his face and (perhaps this is the camera) looked unfocused. It was sort of a creepy effect where even he seemed to be separated from his own show.

And while I've seen the previews for the show with Adam's mug I'd forgotten how downright homely the man is. He really does stick out as "Hollywood's Ugliest Celebrity." The man has a face for radio, what else can be said.

This should be quoted on the TWoP home page.

Corolla must have some hypnotic hold on someone at Comedy Central.

He's a celebrity in the same way Michael Jackson is innocent, which is to say, not.
Shelwood
This show makes me want to give Tough Crowd a retroactive Peabody award. I feel like I should bleach my tv to get the taint off.
inotherwords
He's totally repulsive and unfunny. But given that the target audience is probably men 16-30, I wonder if he's doing as poorly as we think?

For the sake of humanity, I hope so. But I am also trying to be realistic.

"Hollywood's Ugliest Celebrity."

Hmm, I find him quite attractive, actually.

Exactly HOW much have you had to drink?
Elrhino
Why does he keep getting jobs? Because TV Networks are craving someone who will bring in male viewers, because advertisers need to get through to the male 18-49 demograpic. Men aren't watching TV anymore, particularly young men, and its creating a crisis in television. About 25% of men 18-34 watch less than 3 hours of television viewing per week, by far the lowest the lowest demographic sector in terms of viewing. Men 18-24 watch even less than men 18-34. Look at TWOP, and think about what the male to female ratio is among posters.

That's why the networks pay such outrageous contracts for the rights to sports broadcasts, because its really the only thing that men consistently watch. Sponsers will pay big $$$ to a network for commercial time to sell beer and pickup trucks, because there is really very few outlets available to them on television to reach their target audience these days. The only thing keeping the Spike Network afloat is women viewers watching the CSI reruns.
Want2Sleep
Instead of Too Late With Adam Carolla it should be changed to Too Late For Adam Carolla
Why does he keep getting jobs?

God only knows

I liked what Kimmel called him at the Anderson Roast "My Garfunkel". Cool, but I think Art deserves better.

I really think Carolla is a hilarious guy. The thing I admired most about him was the fact that he could go on the radio (without writers) and be consistently funny and entertaining for two hours a day, five days a week. There are very few comedians out there that are capable of doing that.

That said, I think Catrina's right; Adam Carolla doesn't belong on TV. He doesn't have the right look for television, and his style of humor is entirely too cranky and mean-spirited. Instead of coming across as the funny, working class guy next door, he just ends up looking a knuckle-dragging tool.
Storm Shadow
I've tried to watch a few eps and I have yet to make it past the half way point. I have no problem with Carolla but the show is just boring. I never thought anything would make me miss Tough Crowd, but this show did it.
Hmm, I find him quite attractive, actually.
I'm guessing by the fact that he's married that you aren't the only one.
Susan3557
I'll say this about the show - it sure helps me fall asleep quickly! Getting another 30 minutes of sleep is great. Thanks, Adam and Comedy Central!!
BassetHound
Why does he keep getting jobs?
He's funny as a second banana and actually pretty good on the radio, but this show sucks more than a brand new hoover.
Bungalow Joy

Exactly. He's peanut gallery. He's that "other opinion" that's shucks-honest, for what that's worth when the opinion is generally uninformed and unanalyzed. I could disagree with him and like him (sometimes I agree with him), but I can't like someone who doesn't think too good.
scout75
Last night's opening segment was like slow torture and death. I wasn't sure there was even an audience in attendance until I saw them for myself. This can't go on for very long...
SnippyScholar
Schadenfreude! Schadenfreude, everyone!!
Susan3557
I'm actually starting to feel sorry for him. When the joke totally fails (due to lack of any discernable humor), the audience doesn't even give him a pity laugh; it's just awkward silence. So sad.
Adric
I must admit that last night was my first, and rest assured, only look at this show, and frankly it was painfully awkward and uncomfortable. The attempts at humor seemed forced, and the host seems to possess little to no rapport with the camera.

This may quite possibly be the worst attempt at a talk show since the days of Magic Johnson and Chevy Chase.

As for the way he bombed during the call-in portion, I was reminded of how Johnny Carson was an absolute master at "failure". Not every joke would work every night, and indeed, there were nights when it seemed he was just bombing on the monologue. But there was something magical about the way Carson could play off the misses. I distinctly remember giggling on some of these off nights, as Carson never seemed to let the jokes get the better of him.

I know it is grossly unfair to compare Carson to Corolla, but it just shows that it takes a certain skill and talent to entertain, or at the very least, be pleasant to visit with for a short while.

Maybe he was just having an off-night, but the host came across as a first-rate jerk with no charisma. (I'm not saying he should be all lovey-dovey either, but again, if you are going for the mean guy persona, there has to be something else going on there to make us care. Letterman, especially in his NBC days, could be very caustic at times, and yet, he came across much better than Corolla.)

Corolla seemed stiff and uninspired. What I completely fail to understand is the mentality that a show such as this would be a good pairing with the Daily Show. Maybe the change from smart comedy to lameness was just too much.
SRidoc
I joined this forum just so I could complain about Carolla's show. I'm sure he's a nice guy and I enjoyed his work on the Man Show, but this talk show is painful. I've tried a few times but can never get past about three minutes. It can't even fill the 5 minute gap (in our market) between the Daily Show and Letterman.

If Carolla wants to do ranting type humor, he had better go back and study George Carlin and Lewis Black. Otherwise, unfunny ranting just comes off as whiny (kind of like this post).
tothemax
I joined this forum just so I could complain about Carolla's show.

That's just the kind of petty hatred that we like here at TWOP. Welcome!

It's been two weeks and this show hasn't been cancelled yet?

I won't even watch his show because the ads for it aren't even funny. The ones with him doing a mini monologue are the absolutely worst. Has anyone seen the one about the pandas? NOT FUNNY!! AT ALL!
EmbiggenedSoul
I saw an ad for this show and thought it sounded awful and had no plans to watch, but I couldn't find the remote after the Daily Show, and holy crap, how did I never realize how painfully unfunny and annoying this guy is? I used to watch the Man Show despite my better instincts and usually found him and Jimmy entertaining, and I even remember liking him on the Dr. Drew show.

Here he really comes across as a misogynistic jerk.

I give this another month just because of the Daily Show lead in.
EONdc
The 30-60 seconds of this show that my VCR records after the Daily Show is making my brain hurt. Honestly, I don't understand how Adam Corolla is still able to piece together a career minus Jimmy Kimmel. Because, though I never liked The Man Show (and I'm hardly their target demographic), I don't mind Kimmel. I think he's smart and in on the joke. Plus, he dates Sarah Silverman, who is funny and attractive but not a silicone-infested dimwit, which kind of proves to me he's in on the joke. But AC on his own is just unwatchable. He's not funny. He's not smart. He's not even dumb - cause that can be funny too. He's just an asshole.
catrina
I think I just keep checking this thread to see if the show has been cancelled yet but I'm delighted to learn there are many hard-core Carolla haters out there. (Although I never thought even The Man Show was funny either). Those little bits Comedy Central uses for his teasers should be pretty familiar for anyone who's been listening to Loveline. Adam's been saying this shit for years. I don't know why but mean humor is hard to do on TV. I'm trying to think of another "cranky, mean" comic and those that I can think of (Rodney Dangerfield), either weren't all that funny or directed a lot of humor towards themselves as well.

But "cranky, mean" just SCREAMS on radio. Don't know why the difference between seeing the cranky rich white guy or not seeing him makes the difference why something is funny or not. BECAUSE ITS ALWAYS some rich white guy. Adam reminds me of Krusty the Clown sometimes with his rants on Loveline. Like the episode where Krusty tried to do "observational humor" like when your butler washes your sock garters but they still have schmutz on them.
BetyBee
I deserve battle pay because I forced myself to watch this crapfest tonight to see Kathy Griffin. She tried to rescue him, but he is hopeless --- on TV. I actually like to listen to him on the radio once in a while. But on TV he is so not funny, and seems really nervous. At least maybe Kathy will put this in her act, so it won't be a total waste.
Bungalow Joy
I don't know why but mean humor is hard to do on TV.

That's hilarious because it's true. I think on radio you're usually doing something--like work, usually--so crankiness in the background is just a distraction from your crankiness in the mental foreground, or an affirmation of it. But on TV you're focused on the screen. You're waiting for the delivery, and it's usually not worth the wait. Anyway, Adam: Sucky show again. He said he'd let Kathy drive but should've done so more than he did. He should've shut up completely.
