I used to watch this series on VHS as a child and absolutely loved it. I still remember the one where they let those panada bears become Care Bears, but they couldn't control their powers and kept messing up. Don't know why I can remember this and not stuff that is, you know, relevant and useful, but there you go.

Almost ashamed to say this, but I'd consider myself a quasi-fan. I'd catch it once in awhile as a child and it'd definitely keep my attention.
Always found the Care Bears to be aimed towards females, though, so let's keep this revelation between us. Hah.

The only episode I really remember was the one where Bright Heart Raccoon builds a robot and he makes him a heart because he was missing one. That part made me cry. (Hey, I was little.) A quick search online says that episode was called "I, Robot Heart."
I wish they would make a Swiftheart Rabbit plush toy nowadays. She was my second favorite. (Cheer Bear was/is first.) It kinda irks me that they're selling these made-up characters now, like Do-Your-Best Bear. The hell?
Edited to fix Swiftheart's gender. I blame my bad memory and CB ambiguity!

Oh God, my roomate is obsessed with this show. We go and get the cheapo dvd of three or four eps and watch them over and over. While that may seem annoying to many people, I've discovered a certain cheeseyness to the cartoons that make them highly entertaining. I especially love the "Care Bear Stare". I don't know why that is so hilarious to me, but it is. Not that I'm so snarky on everything about it (i do love GrumpyBear and the Care Bear Cousins) but it's so hard not to be!

I never watched this show, but my husband says he used to all the time. One time we were at the birthday party of some kid of some friend or another, and the kid had a Care Bear. My husband, the Marine, got all excited, and practically screamed, "Cool! Sunshine Bear!"(or whatever the name of the yellow one is) His favorite though, is Grumpy Bear, the one with the raincloud. I keep looking for one for him, but I guess the happy ones sell better.

I LOOOOVED Care Bears too!!! I owned a whole fleet of them (Cheer Bear, Love-A-Lot Bear (she's the other pink one, the one with two hearts, right??); Lucky something bear (the one with shamrocks on her tummy (his?)) Birthday Bear, Funshine Bear, etc.......)!!
If I recall correctly, Cheer, Love-a-lot, Funshine, Hugs and Granny were the girl-bears, and the rest were boys, right? Which cousin was a girl and which was a boy?? *Trying to remember*

Luck Bear was my favourite, mainly because in the movie, when like all the other care bears are falling into captivity or something, he created a quick shamrock balloon and floated to safety.
His intelligence is what made him my favourite...
ALso, remember SHrieky?
Ah, hazy memories... my sister liked it. That's my excuse!

Sadly, they haven't created a Grumpy for the current line-up. Because being grumpy is a Bad Thing.
Fucking PC crap, I call it. Grumpy was my favorite, because growing up, I knew I had a horrible temper (inherited, quite honestly, from my mother), that I got angry a lot easier than most people, and Grumpy was a reminder that it was okay to feel bad, and that I could teach myself to control it.
However, the Grumpy Bear belonged to my mom. Good Luck Bear and Birthday Bear were mine.

Kids, I'm too obsessed with the Care Bears for my own good. I used to watch a couple of the movies all the time (
Care Bears in Wonderland, which
Aussie Andrew referred to Good Luck Bear flying away on a clover, and
Care Bears' Nutcracker Suite). Somewhat recently, I finally saw
The Care Bears Movie, and
Care Bears: A New Generation (which is my fave to this day).
I have practically everything you can think of: plushies, tapes/dvds, candy, clothes (as I type this, I'm in my Bedtime Bear PJ's!), jewelry, socks, Valentines, birthday party supplies, stickers, keychains, a fleece throw, "old school" CB's from the 80's, and more.
This is only half of what I have now.
And I agree that they need to stop making up Bears. (Laugh-A-Lot Bear?) And don't even get me started on all the ones they messed up! Share Bear does not have 2 lollipops on her tummy! Proud Heart Cat is not blue! Neither is Champ Bear! Secret Bear is not fuschia!
And though the Care Bears are supposedly "nuetral" in gender, somewhere I have a list I made of (based on the movies and cartoon), who's a boy and who's a girl.
I think it's safe to say that I am one sad individual...

My mom collected all the plushies and figures when they were popular, since I was obsessed with the Care Bears at the time. (still am!) I used to do the Care Bear Stare when I was little too.
I just found my old tape of The Care Bears Move II: A New Generation, but I haven't gotten around to rewatching it yet. I also watched the show, but I don't remember a lot of it. I guess I like the movies better.

Neutral in gender? You kidding me? Maybe it was harder to tell with some of them, but I think they are all of determinate gender.
Lasses:
Grams, Hugs, Love-a-Lot, , Funshine, Cheer, Friend, Secret, Share, Trueheart, and Harmony. Cousins were Treatheart, Gentleheart, and I swear Swiftheart, Lotsaheart, and possibly Cozyheart were also female.
Lads:
Grumpy, Champ, Good Luck, Bedtime, Wish, Tenderheart, Birthday, Tugs.
Cousins were Braveheart, Playfulheart, Proudheart, Nobleheart, Loyalheart, and Brightheart.
I think Swiftheart is a girl because of that episode where there was a race and I'm pretty sure someone referred to her as a 'she.'

I could've sworn there was an episode/movie where Wish Bear was female. And I recently caught part of the new CGI movie on one of the Disney stations, and was surprised to learn that Funshine Bear is now male.
Otherwise, Uzumaki's list seems accurate to me. Except I could never keep the names of the Cousins straight, since they all amounted to "Something-Heart."

Yup, and in
Care Bears In Wonderland, the White Rabbit was looking for his
neice, SwiftHeart.
Like I said, that list I wrote down was based on the movies and episodes of the cartoon, when they talked or when a song/another CB referred to them as a boy or girl.
Also, Funshine being a boy is just wrong.

Care Bears rocked my world like no other. My favorite ones (I have them on old tapes when they showed re-runs Nick Jr or Disney or w/e) were so kickass! The Saftey Episode where it's like a gameshow and they teach you about home safety (like "Don't drink poison!" "Don't get into a stranger's car!"), and the other one was with Tugs and Hugs and I think Tugs (is he the boy?) is sick so Hugs has an imaginary friend that she plays with all day. Oh it is so cool.
I am such a loser, I cannot let go of my childhood obsessions.
Uzumaki
Aug 11, 2005 @ 1:11 pm
I remember that episode, too. It was Higs that was sick, and tugs had his imaginary friend to play with.
Are the Care Bears/Cousins spirits or something? That's why they can live on clouds, and none of them have any real parentage, and the passage of time in Carealot is so weird? (I only realized last year or so that Carealot is a pun on Camelot.) In the second movie, when Trueheart and baby Swiftheart go to investigate Camp Anglo (hehe), she brings Dawn and Jon back to Carealot to babysit the cubs. Then, presumably that same summer, the Bears and Cousins are all grown up.
THe Movie 2 was always my favorite. The first movie gets showed on cable every so often and the second one never does and it pisses me off. I guess the movies are completely unrelated, since the origin stories are so different. Darkheart was a pretty cool/dorky villian, in the Mojo Jojo sort of way. I've often considered drawing a sort of Care Bears movie 2 rehash, and playing up his camp. I'm in a hurry. SOrry if I'm inarticulate.

I think Movie 2 was supposed to take place before Movie 1. That makes sense, but I don't know if that was ever confirmed. I thought Movie 2 was better also, probably because I always liked the baby Care Bears and Cousins, and I love Noble Heart Horse. I also liked the songs from 2 better than 1, I even have the songs from 2 on my iPod!
I don't remember the show all that well, so were Noble Heart Horse or True Heart Bear ever on there?
Uzumaki
Aug 12, 2005 @ 1:04 am
But all the Bears and Cousins had their tummy symbols in the beginning of 2. And they were raised together. Well, it's not like CBs were based in logic.
You have some songs on your iPod? Do you have Our Beginning, the first song in Movie 2 when their all on the ship? I had... all of the songs on my iPod once (>_< so lame), but then I had to get it fixed at Apple and the backup program I used sucked.
I do believe Trueheart and Nobleheart appeared in an episode or two of the series.
Another thing that throws a kink in the origins and timelines is the existence of Grams Bear. In the beginning of Movie 2, none of the Bears or Cousins have tummy symbols. They get them when they're saved by that freaky star with a face. Then they sail up the rainbow to Carealot and the actual Care Bears/Cousins are born. However, I always got the impression that Grams Bear was the oldest bear. She was the biggest (or maybe she just seemed that way next to Hugs and Tugs), she wore a shawl, and her name was Grams. Augh, I don't know. I'm thinking too much about this.

Yep, I've got Our Beginning. I have all the songs from Movie 2 on my iPod, and I might get the Movie 1 songs at some point if I really want them. *still needs to find out if a Pound Puppies movie soundtrack even exists*

I love this show. I had the Rainy Day Activities video. It had the eppie where tugs is sick and hugs has her imaginary friend as well as the one where Grumpy teaches the kids how to make musical instruments from household items.
Grumpy was my fave care bear. I liked the cousins esp. Braveheart Lion. Am I just pulling this out of thin air, or is there a cousin that looks like a raccoon? or maybe it's a panda. One of the 2 anyway.

There was Proud Heart Cat, Bright Heart Raccoon (as posted above), and Swift Heart Rabbit.
Uzumaki,
http://www.carebearzone.com/carebear/ has Our Beginning, and the songs from Movie 1.
After looking at Toys R' Us this weekend, I've come to a few conclusions:
The new Care Bears (Harmony Bear and the like) are really easy to tell apart from the old ones, because it looks like they tried too hard with the new Bears' symbols. The old ones were simpler, which I prefer. They released a True Heart Bear, which was kinda surprising to me, since I didn't think they'd release the movie-introduced bears. I just hope they remake a Noble Heart Horse, because I've seen the little beanie of it, and they completely ruined her design. She's not even purple anymore!

This made me remember something. The lyrics are actually "Flying my colors," but when I was a little kid, I thought they said "Cyanide colors." I don't know how I came up with that, but my older brother (10+ years) explained it to me after he picked himself up off the floor from laughing.

Ah, carebears. That damn book in the (1st?) movie freaked me out to the point of tears when I was 3 or 4, but then got a bedtime bear and all was well. I honestly can't remember too much, so I'll make some possibly false statement. I remember the care bear stare, which is great. I remember the cousin that's a lion and I liked him. Brave Heart! that's it! Also, did the cousins have some kind of special power thing? Like holding hands and making a circle or something? I forget. I should watch the movies again.
New generation care bears? Are they 'cool' and 'hip'?

I recently rewatched the two movies after having not seen them in years (thanks $5 DVD bin at WalMart!) I always remembered liking the second one infinitely better than the first one, and that is still true. I think the songs are much better as well. I think DarkHeart works much better as a villian that psycho-evil-book-lady-that-resembles-the-bald-chick-from-the-first-Star-Trek-movie. Whoever did the voice of DarkHeart deserves some kind of children's series video villians award because his voice still scares the crap out of me.

What, the scripts? If so, I'm not on the same level as you, though I'm very close to being just as pathetic.
I also hate how they have to use computer animation for everything. Disney does the same thing now, and it pisses me off. God forbid you go back to hand-drawn animation.

I don't own the scripts, but since I watched them so many times I know it word for word. At least the Disney movies don't look as computer animated as this Care Bear movie is. I know it takes alot longer to draw everything out, but it makes such a great difference. Lion King was mostly hand-drawn but only a few sceens were computer animated. I don't mind that.
I agree also about the whole CB Cousins returning. They were always my favorite.
