I just don't get why the PBR grinds the cowboys into the ground (literally) for the first 3 months of the season and then puts them on hiatus half the summer. It seems it would be beneficial to them to have a season where instead of a marathon followed by a crawl they have something like a couple weekends on and a weekend off throughout the whole season. Wow that was a long sentance. By the time they get to the summer break all the men are a walking train wrecks and then they are off for 6 weeks and get completely out of practice only to come back for 2 weeks and then take another month off.

Er... Does anyone one around here watch the PBR? I've been watching since It was on TNN (or TNT, I always confuse those two). I think the first season I watched Ty Murray won the championship and Adriano came in second. I've been hooked ever since. I've managed to make it to one live event and can't wait to see more.

The Built Ford Tough Series has been on hiatus for a few weeks but OLN is showing the Challenger Series. There is a new Challenger event Sunday at 8:00PM. The next new BFTS event is Sept. 5th at 8:00PM. PBR on OLN

Leah Garcia has to be the worst sports interviewer of all time. She asks the lamest questions.

OMG, I'm addicted. My husband loves this show and I have grown to know and love these guys (and bulls). I'd like to shoot "Dr. Tandy", though. If his brand of medicine is putting a guy with a concussion back on a ton of kicking beef, they'd be better off without him.

Little Yellow Jacket...he's had more loving testimonials than a retiring president!

Brian Canter...you're my wee cowboy hero!

One night we were watching and a guy who had been stomped the night before said (no lie) ,"Dr. Tandy says if it keeps hurtin', it might be something on the INSIDE". Bless these guys. They may not be tall or hunky but they are brave.

I wish they all had to wear helmets.
Backwoods
I've been watching casually for the last couple of years, but last year due to the NHL strike, I haven't missed a week. Most underappreciated sport in the USA. I agree about the helmets, but I notice most of the younger guys wear them. i am sure they are mandatory in the high school and college levels and I think they just get used to wearing them. Favorite bull: Reindeer Dippin', though Just a Dream seems pretty athletic too.
Backwoods
Great short-go this week. I can't believe people would rather watch poker on TV than this stuff.
LadyKenobi
Oh man, I love me some PBR/PRCA. I used to barrel race as a little girl and it's every bit as fun as it looks :)

I went to my first PBR rodeo over the weekend. I couldn't believe how much time elasped between each ride. Watching it on TV sure spoiled me!
Backwoods
OLN does a nice job with the telecasts, though I don't understand the "while we were at commercial" bit when the event is being shown on tape. I also would like them to follow the bulls more after the ride is over, I went to Grand Rapids last fall and some of the most entertaining stuff happens after the rides are over.
Quickbeam
Mr. QB and I are going to see the action live when the PBR hits Chicago in 2 1/2 weeks. Do the riders sell stuff? I need to get a Brian Canter t-shirt. My husband just wants to see someone break a long bone horribly (tool!).
Backwoods
I am sure you will be able to find your shirt at the event, they all sell stuff there. Canter's shirts only come in Small sizes however... Have fun.
Quickbeam
Hey, Brian Canter won at Billings! Nice first win. Boy sure can't string together a cogent sentence. I guess bullriders are not known for their oratory abilities.
Backwoods
I taped it to watch tonight, have to get up at 3AM, so I get to bed early on Sun. I thought for sure he was going to win the $45G on Saturday night too. He had a really good weekend. I have tickets for next Sat. at Auburn Hills, glad to see no one got hurt this weekend.
Backwoods
I went to the event at Auburn Hills and it was great! Quickbeam, get there early and you will be able to meet all the riders, they are just walking around with everyone. I could have taken out Wiley Peterson and Brian Canter with my car on the way in, they just walked in front of me. Though I have the feeling they would have just got up, dusted themselves off and kept walking.
ThatPoshGirl
Dish dropped OLN a week before the world finals so i have been in some serious withdrawl. I follow online but I really wish they podcasted or something. I'm worried about my man Chris Shivers. It seems like everytime Mike White gets hurt Chris gets hurt worse a few weeks later.

Some of the OLN broadcasts are live. My biggest complaint is that they never seem to show my favorite riders; Wiley Petersen and the recently retired BJ Kramps. Poor BJ, he had a lot of promise but he just never seemed to hit his stride.
Quickbeam
I went to the PBR event outside of Chicago on Saturday. I went to the afternoon round. This was my first time ever seeing this live. It was so different! I really enjoyed being able to see all the riders in real time. No one got hurt except probably Mike Lee who got hung up on his bad shoulder.

I thought they moved the show along very quickly (about 45 riders in 2 and a half hours). I was not expecting pyrotechnics at the beginning and I didn't know they'd introduce all the riders up front. The rodeo clowns/bullfighters work very hard as does the guy on horseback. I'm an animal rights sympathizer but the bulls are treated very well and I can't imagine they ever get hurt. I only felt badly for the team of Clydesdales they brought out at half time. They were nervous, the footing was bad for them and the arena too small for the team.

I was surprised also by the t-shirt cannon and the bratwurst cannon.

Mr. QB and I got there very early and roamed the whole stadium...no riders were out and about except 2 or 3 of the Brazilian riders. None of the riders sold any individual merchandise. So much for my Brian Canter t-shirt! Brian, by the way, rode to a 77, got a re-ride and was bucked off.

We watched the same show at home on Sunday. You hear a different commentary in person than the TV show. I did see Ty Murray but you couldn't hear him. I'd absolutely go again.
ThatPoshGirl
I think it's a lot more exciting live. The pyrotechnics did throw me off as well the first time. If you ever go again, at the end of the night if you go down to the front the riders all come out and shake everyone's hands and sign stuff. My first time I was getting autographs in my 8 seconds program and Adriano walked by and I almost missed him and I was like "Hey, Don't forget me!" and he came back and signed my program. I've maintained a lot of respect for Adriano since then. Conversley, Ross Coleman seemed really annoyed to be out there and didn't sign a lot of stuff. None of the other guys acted like that and maybe Ross just had a bad weekend. Believe it or not, Gilbert Carillo won the event.
Backwoods
OLN is supposed to be returning to The Dish NW this weekend.
ThatPoshGirl
Yay, OLN is back. I was so excited to watch this weekend. Of course, it figures they would be OLN back right before the hiatus.

Is it my imagination or are Brett Gayber and Leigh-me Garcia really gone? Oh, I hope she's gone, please tell me it's so. The funniest and most awkward PBR moment I can remember is when LG was interviewing Mike White and in the middle of the interview pops off with "you were telling me in the hotel room this morning..." The expression on his face was hillarious, I bet he was really happy he was about to face a 2000 lb bull and not his wife.
Quickbeam
Edgard Oliveira was suspended for taking too long in the chute and apparently mouthing off to the judges when he was disqualified. 12 month suspension.
ThatPoshGirl
He also intentionally bumped Cody Custer with his shoulder as he walked past him. Apparently the riders aren't allowed to touch the judges, which is something that I hadn't heard before. It seems to me there might be a bit of conflict between the Brazillian guys and everyone else. I don't think it's a non-American thing tough because there doesn't seem to be any ill-will between the Americans and the Canadians or Australians. McKee and Gaff have alluded to the idea that the Brazillians are kind of cheating? Catching their spurs in their ropes and stuff.

I would like to know exactly how much time he spent in the chute. The Carillos are notorious for spending a lot of time in the chutes and they've never been fined. When they were in OKC a couple years ago I thought Gilbert was never going to get out of the chute.
Backwoods
I thought the penalty was a little harsh, the rest of the season would have been plenty. That being said, they can't let that type of stuff go on. I thought it showed a great lack of maturity on Oliveria's part. I wish they would have showed the whole incident, I would have like to have seen exactly how long he did stay in the chute.
Backwoods
Season resumes this weekend from Dallas!
ThatPoshGirl
The production seemed a bit off at the beginning tonight and I was really missing Michael Gaffney. Ty Murray is great eye candy but I don't want to listen to him...or not listen to him as is usually the case.
Backwoods
"No Question!"

It was a great event though, great line up of Bulls. That Brian Canter is a tough little guy, eh?
AshleyPATeenie
Yeah, Brian was lucky. That bull could've totally smooshed him!

Anyways, I love watching PBR, but I need a little bit more Mike Lee in my life. He doesn't seem to be getting enough airtime lately.
Backwoods
Mike Lee never seems to have a lot to say. BTW a little shout-out here for Craig Hummer, who IMO is doing a great job with the interviews.
Indy1
So happy that the PBR is back! It was a great way to save my soggy, rainy weekend.

As little as Brian Canter is, a calf could have smooshed him, let alone a big bull! That guy amazes me - he's so tough and sticks like glue.

ITA, Gaffney is so much better than Ty Murray as far as commentating goes. Ty just bugs me.
I miss Leah Garcia doing the interviews (whatever happened to her?) but Craig is so much better than the woman they had at the begining of the year.
ThatPoshGirl
Mike Lee never seems to have a lot to say.

Mike Lee seems to be largely ignored for some reason. The year he won the championship I was saying from the 3rd event that he was going to win and every week he was riding almost every bull and no one was talking about him the whole time. They do the same thing with Wiley Peterson. The year he finished 3rd in points he had made a very strong go of it and most of the season they didn't even show his rides.

I never liked Leah. She seemed kind of sleazy and it bugged me how the riders seemed to be obviously uncomfortable around her. When this new guy talks to Chris Shivers the difference is clear. Chris sounds smart and charming and like he's happy to be there and actually has something to say. When Leah would interview him he'd just grunt out "yeah" or "nah" and stare at the ground. I used to think the fact that he never made eye contact with her was an indication that he might have some self esteem issues but he has no problem making eye contact with Hummer.

eta. Leah is running some kind of fitness thing

Well, I just saw the IFC documentary "Rank" that he was featured in so at least one person (the filmmaker) was paying attention to him by the time he got to the 2004 World finals. That is, unless they just went back and taped the personal footage of him after he had won the championship. Did anyone else see that documentary? I ordered it on cable. I thought it was pretty good.
Backwoods
It is not available on DirectTV as of yet. Despite my cheapness , I will probably spring for it does.
Backwoods
"Rank" is available on NetFlix.
ThatPoshGirl
Cool, thanks.
ThatPoshGirl
Noooooooo!!!! Why, why, why would they bring back Leah Gacia? Why, God, why!?!
Backwoods
Actually, I thought Leah did a pretty good job, at least she seemed happy to be back. Maybe they could do it on a rotating basis, then we would'nt get tired of seeing the same people all the time. Throw Smets into the mix with her and Craig Hummer. Just no more Tava, please.
Indy1
I agree, Leah was pretty good this past weekend. I don't like her as much as Craig but ANYONE is better than Tava. Smets would be awesome in that role, that's for sure. I hope they get him to do some major commentating or interviewing for Finals.
Quickbeam
Saw the Old Cheyenne show this weekend (not sure if it was a rerun or not). I so heart Brian Canter. That wee boy, riding Pandora's Box! Nice win. He's so brave. None of these guys can string 3 words together. But they sure are tough.
Backwoods
Since no one else said it, I will-- PBR on Fox sucks!
ThatPoshGirl
Wait...PBR on Fox? What did I miss?
Backwoods
FOX had 2 Sunday broadcasts on the schedule, including today, 10/1. Which I missed because it was on FOX at 2:30, not 4:30 as advertised due to the football game. The FOX broadcasts are usually pretty lame, heavy on the fundamentals and background stuff, but light on actually showing the event itself. The same way the networks always botch up the Olympics. I think the event from today is going to be on OLN, oops VERSUS tomorrow.
ThatPoshGirl
They are reairing the Chihuahua this weekend (which my DVR thinks is new for some reason) and I just the most horrifying thing ever. At the begining of the second day Leah was interviewing Chris Shivers, she asked him a question and turn to the side and extended the microphone and she has a man arm! I almost threw up looking at it. Ew!
Backwoods
I didn't notice that. My wife saw her hawking her exercise equipment on QVC the other day, maybe she should lay off the weights for a while.

BTW, you would think that they could find something other than a month old event to rerun. I would like to see the Calgary Stampede, the event they had in Alaska, a challanger event, anything other than another rerun. Ah well, the finals are just around the corner....
rekkidbraka
Can I just admit that I am absolutely *hooked* on PBR? Cute cowboys, bucking bulls - I'm all in.

And Wordy McWord on Leah Garcia being hideous at interviewing. There's no way we can petition PBR to put her on Doctor Proctor for a try at 8.0, is there? ;-)

Guilherme, Wiley, Shivers, Mike Lee - Vegas, baby. Should be fun. Especially if Paulo Crimber gets to bust a move. I vote that he rocks The Robot sometime soon.
Quickbeam
Hey! They are starting instant replay 10/13. Here's the description from the press release...sounds kind of tool-ish to me.....I don't like it already.

Instant replay will be used only when a rider and/or judge requests it. To request a replay the rider will sound a horn located at either end of the arena within 30 seconds of the call in question occurring. Any rider that requests an instant replay review, but is proven incorrect in his assumption, will receive a no score and will be charged $500.
Backwoods
I think that a lot of 8.0s will turn into 7.8 or 9. I really don't see the riders asking for a lot of reviews, they know if they slapped or not. Outside of a few questionable scores, I really think they do a good job now. Gotta get rid of that damn French judge though.
I agree, thumbs down on this idea.
ThatPoshGirl
The only use for this that I can see is if the rider thinks they have been fouled.

There's no way we can petition PBR to put her on Doctor Proctor for a try at 8.0, is there? ;-)

With that hideous man arm of hers she could probably go 9 on Pandorah's Box.
Backwoods
Just read the press release, I don't think we'll ever see the day a cowboy calls a foul on another rider. Posted at PBR.com if anyone is interested.
ThatPoshGirl
Not fouls on other riders, fouls on the bulls. If the bull hips himself on the way out of the gate or stumbles its considered a foul and the rider can get a reride. I can see riders calling for replays when they think they have been fouled. Also, if the judge says they touched and they don't think they did.
Backwoods
This is from the PBR press release:

"The call for an instant replay review is not limited to the judges or the affected rider. Any contestant competing in the event may sound the horn if he witnesses an infraction that he feels was missed by the event officials during the ride. He too will have 30 seconds within which to sound the horn and state his case to the instant replay judge. If he is wrong, he too is subject to a charge of $500. "

I agree with everything you said TPG, I think they will use it for all those reasons quite a bit, actually. The Marchi ride a couple of weeks ago was a prime example. I don't think anyone will ever use it to "tattle" on another rider.

**** The documentary on bullriding "RanK' is supposed to be on the IFC (Direct TV ch 550)next week on Monday (10a.m.) and Thurs (8:40a.m.) Thats what I read somewhere anyway, check the time for yourself. Understand its kinda like "Beyond the Bull Uncensored"
Should be interesting.
ThatPoshGirl
I totally agree that they would never make a call on another rider. Thanks for the info about Rank. I'll set it up, it sounds interesting.
Backwoods
Three rounds in the books with 0 use of the replay. This looks like its gonna work out well.
Backwoods
Finals start tonight on Versus at 9!!
