...Nice shout out to TWOP with the "Intro to the Dances"!

They had them last week, too, for the rhumba and quickstep.

Rachel has grown on me so much over the last two weeks because I really wasn't thrilled with her the first night

I think Rachel is very good, and lovely to watch. She was sick the first week, so she got off to a rocky start. I think she's viewed by some as being passive or not as skilled because she's not flashy. She's elegant, she has great posture and extension, she's very limber, and her partner, wisely, showcases her assets. I kind of bizarrely love Rachel anyway, she seems like a nice down to earth person and a good sport.

Which is good, since the female host (Lisa?) deserves all the snark we have to spare. She really does come close to ruining a good show with her insipid "interviews" and stupid comments. And inability to read the teleprompter...

She is Just Awful. She can't interview, she's not quick witted or even a good extemporaneous chatter. She sucks. And to think that the judges' criticisms are being cut short so we can get in more of Tom's inane jokes and her shitty backstage chat. Boo!

John and Charlotte, King and Queen of the floor. Joey and Ashly, very cute, very energetic, but Joey is very flat footed and floppy. Tighten it up, Joey! And Kelly Monaco and her permanent bitchface can go, anytime. Can't stand her.

Dude, yes. Actually, the first episode I watched of this she made me laugh out loud. They cut to her in the backroom to talk to the dancers before the marks, and she just had nothing to say to them. Said "Ok, let's just go straight to the marks". I burst out laughing. Why is she even there??
Svenska Flicka
Charlotte is developing an obsession with John, methinks.

Well, she'd better get in line behind me, 'cuz I was here first!

Kelly, please go home and take your soap fanbase with you.
(I have no sympathy for her regarding the deafness, BTW. If I have limitations, then I need to keep them in mind when I'm considering participation in something. IE: I could never go on Survivor, if for no other reason because I'm a lousy swimmer! If I decide to participate anyway, then I'm the potential fool...and certainly shouldn't expect special treatment & consideration.)

Evander, so sad. You and your big feet must go home now. But please don't give up on dancing! Dance because you have fun, and because you love it! It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks (once you're off of this show, that is, because here it DID matter seeing as how it was a competition!).

Love, love, love John/Charlotte, Joey/Ashly (and her non-size-3 body), and Rachel/Jonathan. If any of them is voted off before Kelly/Alec, it's a travesty.

I love this show - it is so easy to embrace the cheese. I love John and Charlotte because he knows it's 100% velveeta and he's doing it whole hog. I always find Joey and Ashly just too darn frantic and frenzied in their dances and last night it was over the top - his mouth hanging open - I find it very distracting. Thank goodness Evander is gone - it was becoming just too painful and that ruins all the good snark potential.
jcpdiesel21
I was cracking up at Alec dancing last night. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but the way he was jerking his legs and knees up combined with the black and white shoes made me giggle. It just looked funny.

Did anyone else notice that when the judges gave the scores for (I think) John and Charlotte's performance that the judges gave out a 9, 8 and 7 and the audience booed Bruno's 7? WTF? It's a 7!!!

Every time the dancers finished their performance and went in front of the judges' table for their comments, my fiancee said "Here comes the lame joke from Tom." Tom did not disappoint a single time.

I feel almost alone on my little hate-train, but I absolutely HATE Rachel. I don't know why but she annoys me to no end. Okay, well, I think it's the little spoiled princess that comes out in the behind the scenes footage - what a frickin' whinger - and also the way those damn judges won't stop kissing her ass. WTF is that about?! Seriously, WTF? Last week when they told her she was queen of the world, even she looked surprised at how they were going on and ON! Anywho, she just really bugs me....had to get that off my chest <phew>!

I'm loving GI-Joey, but, seriously, what is up with his teeth?! It's like they are 2 sizes too big or something. I know everyone in Holllywood has veneers so their teeth are blindingly white, but I think he needs a new dentist. They just don't look like they fit in his mouth. Although maybe they were always like that and I just never noticed...

Poor Evander. I thought he actually looked kind of sad to be going home, but really, after last week, it was time.

Oh god yeah. Like I really need to know "how they're feeling about that" two and a half seconds after the other one just asked. I hate the both of them. And Tom Bergeron combined with the canned laughter just makes me think that I've flipped to an episode of America's Funniest Videos.

The participants have no say in the music nor in the costuming. Unfortunate, because if they did, maybe Joey & Ashly could have both dressed in 40's gear and danced to a 40's jive which makes a nice show. As it was, the costuming did nothing for the dance and the music they danced to was played without a jive rhythm. The combination made them look way off.

Have to agree that the Lisachick is annoying and useless. And have they told the pros not to speak? I swear she gave Jonathon a dirty look for trying to comment in the back room! Bad boy! Now, sit and be quiet!

In his defense, it appears that Tom B has to cut off Bruno simply to keep the show on time. After all, it's live and they have to hit the commercial breaks at the right intervals and still have time to do the elimination. Although the writing is worse if possible than on AFV. Some groans are NOT good groans.
Arabesque
Yep, Evander was terrible. But I'm still sad to see him go- he's definitely the most entertaining of them to me.

It isn't gonna be any fun without Evander! Really, it's not. Love how hard he was trying. It's going to be quite strange not to see him next week.

I really like Edyta's dancing and wish there was a sudden-death competition kind of thing where Joey had the option of replacing Ashly with Edyta. He probably wouldn't do it, but that would be awesome.

Rachel is growing on me.
ClarionGrad
I doubt Bergeron is making unilateral decisions on cutting people off. If he has a wire in his ear, it's connected to either the control room or one of the producers or both. If not, the floor director certainly is and is communicating with Tom via handsigns. The amount of collaboration necessary to pull off a live show is incredible and I'm constantly in awe of Bergeron's skill in making it look effortless.

The female host, Lisa Canning, is a reporter for one of those entertainment trash shows, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra... one of those. I don't think she's so bad. She's attractive. She's not the best interviewer but she seems to serve her place. Which essentially is, be the female host standing next to Tom. Hey it could have been worse. We could have gotten someone truly irritating like Daisy Fuentes or Brooke Burns.
ferretrick
She's AWFUL! I still don't know her name, so I refer to her as the 'Dunkleman.'

HA! But she's actually even more useless than that. I think of her as Kristin Holt.
mtlchickie
Lisa used to be on Entertainment Tonight about 5-6 years ago then dissapeared. Which I was like "You're alive!" when she first showed up on this.
katiekaye
gudgeon Thank You! I'm NOT a Rachel fan. Yes she has good lines but I think she's awkward! I certainly don't see what the judges see but maybe that's why I'm not a judge. And ITA that the judges gave her a higher score to balance out the low score she was going to get from the phone-in votes.

I loved Evander. He made me smile like an idiot every time I watched him. No, he wasn't good by ballroom dancing standards but these aren't professionals. I think he was disappointed because he just KNEW he was going to win. Also, to lose on the dance his Mama taught him when he was little was probably dishearting. I am very sad to see him go.

About the judges - there was no reason for them to rip him apart like they did. No, he wasn't good. No, he's not light on his feet. Yes, he was the worst of the bunch. However, there is no reason for them to annihilate him with all of the criticism. Just give him the low scores and pray he doesn't beat your ass in the parking lot after the show.

Love John and Charlotte! Love his personality. They have lots of spunk.

ETA: Had that horrible singer ever even heard "Footloose" sung before? Messed it up. Badly. That was terrible! As was "Toxic". How can they sing worse than Britney????
andeely
I can't believe that Joey & Ashly were that close to the bottom. That sealed it for me, I actually phoned in all 5 of my votes last night because I was worried that the damn soapfans were gonna get him eliminated by keeping Kelly(i/e?) on instead.

The top 3 are definitely John, Joey and Rachel.

IMO the judges gave Rachel such high scores last night because they knew she wasn't doing as well in the popular voting and didn't want the travesty of seeing her last dance before Kelly(i/e?)'s.

I love John and Charlotte because he knows it's 100% velveeta and he's doing it whole hog.

ITA. He is hamming it up big time. I love that.

I've only seen Evander and Rachel so far...but

I agree. He was much better this time around (not saying a whole lot), but at least he's progressing. He's never going to be a dancer and yet, he's trying. The moves seemed a bit recycled from the "cha cha cha." It was his night to go, though.

Did anyone cringe when Tom said to Evander “jive turkey”? Hwa? Is this 1975? If this show returns, they need to get better hosts. Waaaaay better hosts.

Overnight ratings:

Did anyone besides me expect Lisa to do air quotes when she said “Stars” when going to a commercial? I just seemed like it would be a natural thing to do.

They had them last week, too, for the rhumba and quickstep.

Really? I didn’t see the instruction. Will have to check the tape.

I feel almost alone on my little hate-train, but I absolutely HATE Rachel. I don't know why but she annoys me to no end.

You're not alone. You are really not alone. I may be the only other person on the hate train but you're not alone. Rachel annoys me, too, and I think the main reason is the ass-kissing.

Kelly garnered sympathy from me because I didn't think she was nearly as bad as the judges' comments suggested. Rachel annoys me because I don't think she's nearly as good as the comments suggested.

Yes, she has fine lines and I'll certainly defer to those who know better than I saying her extension and whatnot is very good. But, from what I am seeing on my couch at home, she seems to be riding on her flexibility a lot more than I'd care to see. It's her gimmik the way that Kelly's hot bod and skimpy outfits are her gimmik. While Kelly's gimmik doesn't seem to have fooled the judges, I feel that Rachel's tendency to do the splits has.

The thing is, I find her partner utterly charming and their whole battle last night on who was supposed to lead did make me laugh. Also, I've always rather liked Rachel Hunter.

It doesn't annoy me at all when the judges praise John and Charlotte but then, I really do think they're wonderful. They weren't AS wonderful last night but I still think they're doing well.

Also, I think the judges have realized that just tossing a bunch of 'awkward!' 'not fun!' comments at Kelly aren't as good as actually giving her constructive criticism.

Bruno just looks like he's coming in his pants whenever Rachel gets near him. Someone needs to hose him down when he starts in on the 'Love Goddess' crap. Is he trying to hook up with her or something? Rein. It. In!

That's what really does it for me. The undeserved and unRESERVED ass-kissing, most especially from Bruno, rather turns me off of Rachel when it comes down to it. Kelly did better this time and the comments weren't nearly as harsh so I didn't feel nearly as indignant for her. But I did feel indignant in regards to Rachel. I was watching at home thinking 'She wasn't THAT good...' so, were I to vote... it wouldn't have been for her. But it also wouldn't have been for Kelly as it WOULD have the two previous weeks simply because I felt she was treated fairly this time.

I would have voted for John and Charlotte who, while I don't think they were as strong in the tango as they were in the quickstep, I felt were the best of the night. I also liked Joey and Ashly but I was very distracted by his loosy goosey foot flailing. He looked like someone buzzed at a wedding out on the dance floor and just cutting loose. Entertaining to watch, certainly, but the jive should be a bit tighter than that.
Maybelline
Rachel won me over last night. Her dancing was so graceful and beautiful. Her legs are about a mile long, and she and her partner are really using them to their full advantage.

If Kelly doesn't go home next week, (and I doubt she will), I will be so mad! I felt sorry for her last week, but even with some slight improvement, she is still the worst dancer by far. And isn't she an actress? Why can't she act pleasant, or gracious? All she does is scowl and pout. In one of the backstage shots, while they were talking to another couple, she was in the background, frowning and shifting her wieght from one foot to another, as if her feet hurt. God-suck it up, woman, you are on television!

Edyta, on the other hand, knew she was a goner, but kept her composure and was smiling graciously to the end. Take notes, Kelly. Don't be such a sore loser. I hate that her stupid soap fans are going to keep Kelly in this competiton.
Mowgli
I thought it was "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan, which is, IMO, a total rip-off (music-wise) of "Hernando's Hideaway".

That -is- a rip off and under a different title, too? That was just. So Bad.

And thanks to those who noted "Hernando's Hideaway". (It was late).

I wish Zigletto or Z's pal knew the reason for the music the producers stick these people with. They're missing some much more entertaining choices that would serve these dancers so much better.

It's really annoying, when the pro and am are doing their best and their efforts are being sabotaged by the music.

John's overly dramatic expressions didn't bother me the first two weeks, but last night I found them very comical. Not really a good idea with the tango, especially, to make people watching you laugh out loud.

And I think most people who saw Rachel on "The Real Gilligan's Island" would have been as surprised as I was by her. She really seems like a sweet, kind person who didn't take herself all that seriously and wouldn't be bad to be stuck with in adverse circumstances. Who knew?

Kelly, on the other hand, seems so young to already have such a bitch-face. I keep wondering, "What will she look like at 40?"

And was there less booing of judges last night? I was hoping they're discouraging it. The cheering/clapping for anyone is fine. The booing? No.

Hey, I've been back here in the club car sucking down martinis waiting for you all to arrive.

I agree with some of the other posters that the judges were afraid of having Rachel eliminated and elevated their scores appropriately.

I feel almost alone on my little hate-train, but I absolutely HATE Rachel. I don't know why but she annoys me to no end.

Rachel always looks so damn grimy. The hair was a mess last night and she was sweaty making her foundation look nasty. She looks like she should be very itchy.
Dana Girl
You guys are not alone on the Rachel hate train, I can't stand her. I also think a lot of her much praised extension is just height. Not that she doesn't extend, but I've taken enough dance classes to have observed if you put a really tall girl and short girl together, the tall girl's extensions will always look better. I also don't think she looks like she's having fun. And a smile covers a lot.

Joey reignited a long buried NKOTB era crush last night. That was an adorable dance. He definately isn't the best dancer, and apparently NKOTB would have never made it the current world of boy bands, but he looked like he was having a lot of fun, and so did Ashly, and it worked for me.

Kelly needs to put those puppies away. Mine ached after watching her.

I think Charlotte and John got slightly hosed, because there's looked more tango-ish to me than Rachel and her partner's. Although, after laughing off everyone's comments about her stalking John last week, she scared me a bit this week.

ETA: As much as I'd like to see Chris Noth on here, I don't think of him as "older character actor" Dana Girl. But I think he'd be quite fun.

Maybe not a character actor, but Chris Noth is older than John O'Hurley. But yes, mostly I just think he'd be a lot of fun.
ziglettospal
Even though I much prefer Rachel to Kelly, I am pleasantly amused that there is a Rachel hate-train. Go for it you all, and we'll see who goes home first! (Unfortunately I think it will be Rachel, sigh.)

Costume fun facts:
The person who designed the costumes for the women also does costumes for ice dancers -- most notably multi-time world champions Tatiana Navka & Roman Kostomarov. Let's just say that I find too much of that sleazy/cheezy ice dance sensibility in Trista's ice nymph costume from last week and in everything Kelly is wearing. I have no evidence to support this, but I strongly suspect that Designs to Shine is doing hostess Lisa's dresses too. There is just something about the way they are cut and decorated with rhinestones that makes me think that -- especially that plummy thing last week.

I don't know why the producers choose the music they do, but I'm still holding on to my theory that it has to do with using recognizable pop tunes and well-loved standards so as to connect with the viewing audience...especially in the younger demographics, as evinced by hauling out "Toxic." It's amusing in a cringeworthy way to hear the house band murder some of these tunes, though, but I'm thinking that this tactic of using recent music might be backfiring because of it.
jazmyne
I don't have the Rachel hate, but I understand, because I have vicious Rebecca Romijn-hate for pretty much no reason. The only thing that I don't like about Rachel is her hair. I know it's hard to get layers to stay up, but I know there's some great hairspray/gel/egg white combo she could use that would work. I really liked her tango, despite the music, and thought it was very sexy and fun.

I have felt bad for Kelly over the last two weeks, because it's felt like the judges just hate her the most, but I didn't like her jive. It was very stompy. And Alec was so bouncy, and had such exagerated flicks that I thought it really made her stomping obvious, so I was surprised by the positive comments the judges gave. I won't mind if she leaves.

Loved loved loved Joey and Ashley. I thought the routine was fun, and that they looked like they were enjoying themselves.

John has the greatest face. I can't stand "Dance With Me," because "Hernando's Hideaway" was already a great song, and didn't need a new hip-hop update. Olé. But I enjoyed their performance, and thought that after the judges told Kelly to get more into the music, John did a good job of bringing the music and the lyrics into the performance. He's just a great performer, and I think that's helping him. Of course, Charlotte being a bit smitten with him on the dance floor helps, too.

Evander? Buh bye. Maybe it would have helped if someone had told you that dancing is done on the balls of your feet, but it's too late now. Sorry you didn't have fun.
aquaz1
I actually(ding!) like Rachel. I think she's comedic and likeable. However, I still can't get over that she is "Stacy's Mom."

Kelly's dance was not that good last night. She visibly slipped up 3 major times. Oh well. She's boring so she won't win.

Joey and Ashly (Seriously, who doesn't have an E in the name Ashley?)'s dance was fun to watch. Jazzhands Joey is a big cutie, even if he isn't the best looking and dorky. He makes the dance fun to watch, while having fun himself. UNLIKE YOU RACHEL HUNTER!!!

John and Charlotte are funny, have chemistry, and can dance well. It's definately going to be between Joey and John in the finals.
Dandesun
Interesting comments on the costumes. I didn't mind Edyta's because it looked very Latin Dance though I did kind of laugh thinking that her outfit made Kelly's look downright modest.

In regards to Kelly's... oy. The drapey thing along the front just screamed WHOREY! Kelly's got boobs and those boobs get to rockin' when she starts the jive so the drapey thing was NOT necessary. I was distracted enough by the boobage (and cringing in sympathy and holding my own not unlike many others here) without the drapey thing rocking to its own beat.

I agree that this is all between Joey and John. I like Kelly fine but she doesn't deserve to walk away with it all. In fact, much as I dislike Rachel (or rather the Rachel ass-kissing) in this, she should outlast Kelly (unless things change rather drastically next week) though I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she didn't. I'm a soap fan and I know how rabid soapers can be. (Be afraid. Be very afraid.)

But it should all come down between Joey and John. I am definitely leaning towards John and Charlotte. We'll see what happens next week.
andeely
Another thing that bugs me about Kelly that I forgot to mention earlier is her hair. Every time she dances she ends up with chunks of hair stuck in her oh-so-fake lashes. All the other women wear their hair pulled back, for good reason, get a clue Kelly.
blackwing
I really dig Rachel Hunter (it'd be funny to see them dance to "Stacy's Mom"). But I recognize that she has no chance against the mugging of Peterman. I'd like to see Joey out next week, then Kelly. Leaving Rachel and Peterman in the final.

I'm wondering what happens the last week. After Kelly leaves, we are down to two teams. Then they dance for an hour. Then we vote on who should win. Then on the final show, what happens? An hour of basically meaningless exhibition dance? Then they reveal the winner?
Sumner
Give me a seat and a martini on the Rachel hate train, please! She is just not that good to warrant the fawning. And her hair! I think she styles it herself b/c it is distractingly like a rat’s nest every week.
Bruno- you had me, then you lost me. And wth is Carrie Ann's problem? She was being very bitchy last night. Someone needs to tell her to lighten up. It's a fun, cheesy show!
Oh, and vallegirl, I could not agree with you more that Janice Dickinson needs to be on this show. It is just too delicious to think about.
Quite Nutty
You know, I didn't see this coming, but suddenly - after last night - I have a rapid crush on J. Petermen.

As for possible future contestents, how about Ian from last Survivor. He did particpate in dancethons at Penn State.

As a former PSU Thonner myself, I can tell you that despite the name, it doesn't really involve much dancing. The rules are that you have to stay on your feet and awake for 48 hours. They do have bands that come, and you can dance to them if you want, but there's no one doing ballroom style anything there. Plus, I love Ian, and would hate to see him do another reality show, famewhore Trista style!

I think ABC would want an ABC reality star. Maybe Andrew Firestone would do it. He'd be cute! But they would need to find him a midget partner.

Gah! I like him, too. I'd actually love to see Constantine Maroulis (American Idol) give DWS a whirl. I saw some photos of him from a show called "Tango Til They're Sore". I bet he'd be good. He actually *kind of* reminds me of the guy in "Strictly Ballroom".

HAHAHAHAH..... His eyef*cks would not seem one bit out of place to me on this show. He could ham & cheese it up perfectly with the rest of them.

Lisa Canning was on Y & R for a while recently, as a very boring character who quickly disappeared. Hmmm....

Joey reignited a long buried NKOTB era crush last night. That was an adorable dance. He definately isn't the best dancer, and apparently NKOTB would have never made it the current world of boy bands, but he looked like he was having a lot of fun, and so did Ashly, and it worked for me.

WORD! Although, when he talks, I kind of want to SHUSH! him. He'll sound fine for a few sentences, and then he'll say something that's... sort of dumb. Oh dear.
But cute!

Also, what I found so adorable about his jive was, though admittedly it was a bit too loose and dorky, that he was just so FREE with his BODY! It's lovely to watch a person that unafraid of moving around... flailing even.

So while I really want John and Charlotte to win, I hope that Joey gets some control over those flying limbs, and gives them a run for the money.

(He used to have to be pretty synchronized and stiff with NKOTB, didn't he? Remember those dance moves? He should tap into that a bit.)

Watched both episodes last night...why was this so much fun?? Now I understand why ballroom dancing was the rage on tv years ago.

John & Charlotte clearly are the most talented. Poor Evander...it was like watching your uncle dance. You love him but you can't help giggling a little. OK, a lot. I enjoyed how the "professional" male dancers all looked like they belonged a) on romance novel covers or b) escaped from cruise ship "dance escort" duty.

So...what do the winners win? I'm so used to hearing the prize flogged for all of a reality "contest," but if they said it I missed it repeatedly.

Trista's "I'm feeling uncomfortable, blah blah, I'm married" crap really irritated me.
Imagine how she'd have reacted if Louie strapped on the belt (like Jonathan did with Rachel).

Last night was the first time I caught an entire routine by Kelly & Alec and I've got to say, "She sucks!". IMO, she's as heavy on her feet as Evander and doesn't seem to have any control of her movements. Her dancing looks more like flopping and flailing than actual dancing. Alec, on the other hand, could dance like Pee Wee Herman and I'd still think he was HOT.

Otherwise...I'm very impressed with Rachel, think John's overly dramatic (but good), and can take or leave Joey (although I like the John/Joey rivalry). YMMV.

I think Charlotte and John got slightly hosed, because there's looked more tango-ish to me than Rachel and her partner's. Although, after laughing off everyone's comments about her stalking John last week, she scared me a bit this week.

I thought so too. Rachel's dance looked more like "Ooh! Look at the liiiines!" John wasn't as smooth as in the quick step, but he seemed the best, technically speaking.

I do think Charlotte has a bit of a crush on him, but it all completely fits with the presentation factor in ballroom dancing. And I loved that she was a total drill sergeant in training. That gal was all business.

John and Charlotte are very good. I thought their tango was very nice, but (and I think I may be the minority on this one), I enjoyed Rachel and Jonathan's tango more than their tango.

Agreed here. Then there's Evander. He was trying so hard with his dance. I was so uncomfortable for him after he got sent packing. But damn I'm gonna miss the smell he was cooking.

So I caught the rerun of last week's show at 8pm - SO happy to see Trista voted off. Was it just me or was she pouty/bitchy on the dance-out? She wouldn't look up and wouldn't actually 'dance' with her partner, just kept swinging hips side to side.

Hate her. HATE.

I just saw on the ABC messageboard that next week's dances are the Vienese Waltz and the Samba. Each couple must perform both dances.

How much posing opportunity is there for Rachel?

Viennese Waltz
Fast Facts:

    * The Waltz developed in Central Europe from the Austrian dance known as the Landler. The fast whirling of partners held as if in an embrace shocked polite society. The music of Johann Strauss and the famous ballrooms of Vienna popularized the faster version known as the Viennese Waltz.
    * This will be a group dance on Dancing with the Stars, so the dance floor can get quite crowded. Watch out for couples getting boxed in as it has been known for dirty tactics to be employed for couples to try and gain an advantage on the floor.

Distinctive moves:

    * Sweeping turns that gracefully move around the floor characterize this dance. The Viennese Waltz is known for its rotational movement, which is simple and elegant.
    * There should be no foot rise on the inner turns.
    * Rotating and swinging spatial movements.

Cuthroat ballroom dancing!

Samba
Fast Facts:

    * The Samba is an all-out party dance with origins from Brazil's Rio Carnival. It is made up of many different South American dances incorporated into one. It is very rhythmical with lots of hip action.
    * Walking Samba steps and side steps are the basic components of this dance. The major characteristic of the Samba is the vertical bounce action. Steps are taken using the ball of the foot. The accomplished dancer is made to look effortless and carefree with knee action, body sway and "pendulum motion."

Distinctive moves:

    * The Basic step is a Volta (a crossing action in front of the body, where you step across with the bounce). You will see a bouncing action predominantly through the knees.
    * Look out for the Samba roll – a rolling movement from the waist up. The upper body circles as you create a six-step turning group.
    * Many Sambas have a move called a Botafogo, which is a traveling walk with a change of direction from left to right or right to left.
    * There should be lots of outstretched arms.
    * The samba has a distinctive climax, it ends with throwing of heads back and arms splayed out to side.
    * There should be a good balance of moving steps and stationary steps

I love the jive--I hope they pick appropriate music for it instead of say Britney Spears' Toxic or some such nonsense.

Yooge shout-out to oakgal, she totally called that last week!

StarryNite--hee! Thanks, I forgot all about that post. I know kids, I'm scared too.[/HomerSimpson]
Quite Nutty
I have to say, I had to do the Viennese Waltz for my Ballroom Dance final in college, and that motherfucker was HARD. I don't know if it was the speed or what, or that I didn't really trust my partner, or he wasn't a strong enough leader, or what - but we just could NOT get it right, even though it's really only the one movement over and over again. This should be interesting, and though I loved him, thank GOD Evander doesn't have to attempt this.
mtlchickie
And they have to learn both of these in a week?!

Oh, this could be either fantastic or a hot old mess. I cannot WAIT.

Okay, I am a total Strictly Ballroom geek because after I read this I immediately thought, "Oh no! John and Charlotte will box Joey in, and he'll have to pull flashy, crowd-pleasing, non-federation steps to get out! Then he'll have to face the wrath of Barry Fife!"
sgupta4
No, katms, you're not the only one. We all remarked on her sour expression the next here on this forum.

Well, I finally logged onto the ABC website and placed my vote for John & Charlotte. They were great.

ETA: Next week's episode should definitely separate the wheat from the chaff as far as ability goes. If all couple have to dance both dances, it should be glaringly obvious who should go and who should stay for another round.
Mowgli
That gal was all business.

Well, what we saw. (Fortunately, we weren't shown the Speedo conversation during rehearsal).

Charlotte's behavior really gets on my nerves. No one else drapes themselves all over their partner all the time when off the dance floor. I feel embarrassed watching her.

The comments about the costumes/costumer were interesting. That explains a lot--but too bad there's that ice dancing mindset. I really like the show, but real attention to costume design, like real attention to music could make it so much better.

Also, re: someone upthread asked what they win. They get paid in advance for participating, but they just "win" a trophy.

Personally, I think now that it's a big hit, the pairs should get paid AND ALSO be dancing for charity--with every pair getting something for their charity, and a big cash prize for the charities of final two/winner.

C'mon, ABC! You're making millions from this with very low overhead! Let them get the PR from working for a charity! And...let's not be so cheap!!!!

I'm going to have to rent Strictly Ballroom because you guys have made it sound like such fun.

I've been watching some videos of the Viennese Waltz and for Kelly and Rachel's sake, they already have the basic waltz step in, they just need to get the speed and the turns down. Joey is going to have the hardest time with the posture.

Here Is a good website that shows the basic steps for the dances.
katiekaye
I told Mr. Katiekaye last night that I thought someone must have talked to Charlotte since last week because I didn't think she was as lovey-dovey with O'Hurley this week. I must have missed something...

I did miss something - help me out. I thought he said that he only had 48 hours to learn the routine....is this true? Why didn't he have the whole week?

Lisa Canning was on Y & R for a while recently, as a very boring character who quickly disappeared. Hmmm....
That was her as the mysterious Adrienne? Huh. Didn't make the connection. I'm sorry she had to be saddled with someone like Damon mumbles Porter. She should have chosen Malcolm!

So they will do a group dance to the Viennese Waltz? How are we supposed to judge at home? There's only one camera shot at a time. Is it going to be a five minute or longer dance? It'd have to be if they want us to get any kind of impression. Otherwise, it'll just be quick 10 second snippets of mugging, elegant lines, bad posture, and T&A.
barkley
Looking at the videos of the Viennese Waltz, Rachel is going to have a very tough time if she continues to have a leading problem with Jonathan. With 3 other couples on the floor, she's going to have to give up control and go where Jonathan takes her.

I can just see Joey and John duking it out boxing each other in.

Len Goodman explains all the steps of the dances on the Strictly Come Dancing BBC website. Click on the dance you want to see, and the video link is at the bottom of the page. (The Viennese Waltz is in with the Waltz)
TipsyTraveler
Another thing that bugs me about Kelly that I forgot to mention earlier is her hair. Every time she dances she ends up with chunks of hair stuck in her oh-so-fake lashes.

I'm likely in the minority, but I find tousled, slightly sweaty hair - on a woman - incredibly sexy.
Hip 2 Be Square
Still loving this show.

People I'd like to see on future editions (I'm interested in people who will surprise us by totally rocking the place):
Steve Martin
Madonna (like that would ever happen--but she used to be a dancer, remember?)
A figure skating star, maybe Nancy Kerrigan or Brian Boitano
Debbie Allen
Hank Azaria (because there's nothing he can't do, so far)
Someone from the world of professional dance, but not ballroom--like Savion Glover
