Assuming neither has been really dancing for two months by the time September 20 rolls around, will Kelly revert to the dance stylings of her graceful waltz?

I don't know if that's a safe assumption. After all, her character's "evil twin" on General Hospital is a dancer, so Kelly has in all likelyhood been dancing to prepare for that role.
dominar
Its not like dance experts are going to be judging them. She won with fans before, she'll win with them again. So....why bother to hype a "competition"?

Simple. Because ABC is trying to 1) validate the judging in the finale while 2) giving lip service to those viewers who were upset by it. ABC had to do *something* to try to placate the pissed off viewers (and there must have been a lot of them, to stir up the ABC execs enough to go ahead with this stupid idea), while taking the wind out of their sails.

IMHO, the dance-off is all for show (and ratings, of course). It is ABC's way of insincerely saying, "hey, we heard you and here's what we've done to fix the problem..." while not actually doing a damn thing at all.

ETA:

And who knows if JOH and his wife have made good on their intention to continue dancing. :) Hopefully both of them have continued to improve so we can enjoy their dancing at a Week 5/6+ level, rather than return to Week 1/2 (although I'd take J/C's quickstep from Week 2 any day!)

Yes, that's exactly what irritates me. What problem are they addressing? The "problem" that Kelly won and John didn't? The "problem" of the vote being decided by fans?

Kelly won because more fans support her, for whatever reason. So having fans voting isn't going to change the first "problem".

If the problem was the fan vote itself (which I think it was, but...who cares?), then have dance experts be the only ones to judge them this time.

But...they're not doing that either. So, the process is the same, the results will be the same, and the whole thing is a stupid ratings stunt under the guise of being "responsive to criticism".

It's just so stupid!!!! (Except for the money-making part. That part about manipulating the fans and exploiting all the attention the show got to sell much more expensive advertising time for a "rematch" is actually quite clever....)
Rainmaker

So much word. John can't get over the fact that America likes a cute, petite, ex-Playmate over him. Maybe if he stops the stupid facial contortions, I'll throw a vote his way.
zigletto
What problem are they addressing?

The "problem" of the shrinking revenue stream when DwtS left the air! This isn't about dancing, or Kelly, or John, or the fans of either, or controversy, or conspiracy...it's about $$$$$.

Oh you are so right ! They had no clue this show was going to be a huge hit and they will keep it going any way they can.
djork
zigletto & ziglettospal any chance you guys will be invited for the Dance-off live audience again? If you get a chance to go would you give us a report of the atmosphere with the audience and the dancers?

Actually I was wondering about the cheering in the past episodes, were people really getting into it? When we see it on tv, is the sound muted or is that representative of what it's actually like in the audience? What kind of things got the audience most excited?
ziglettospal
I think the chance of me getting invited again is small, but if I get lucky of course I'll give a full report!

I thought the audience was really getting into it at the taping I went to (Episode 2). There was a comic who warmed up the audience, and who kept us going during the commerical breaks. The audience sound levels were edited a bit for TV, but not much, I'd say it seemed just a little louder in person than how it came through on television, but not by too much. The audience would get the most excited whenever someone would pull off something that obviously looked like a big flashy trick: lifts, drops, picture lines, butt-writhing, that sort of thing. So basically, the more tricks people did the more cheers they'd get. Unfortunately, in that kind of situation, good clean basic dancing with solid fundamentals doesn't get rewarded as much as showy stuff not done very well (or done to the detriment of showing actual dance fundamentals).

Oh! My! God!

I just received my new copy of Maxim in the mail. I do not have the vocabulary to describe how hot Kelly Monaco looks on the cover. When I first saw it, I fell over on the porch mumbling gibberish. My neighbor, watering her lawn at the time, came running over thinking I had suffered some sort of cerebral meltdown.

I would sell all of my earthly possessions, live in a moldy '71 Winnebego and toss my gold medals in the nearest dumpster just to dab the sweat from Kelly's belly button.
blackwing
I got my new Maxim too, and good for Kelly to land the cover. Her career has certainly been helped by DwtS. This cover? Is proof that Peterman is going to lose, AGAIN. What excuse is he going to use this time? "Well, I think that if I had been on the cover of a major men's magazine, that I would have had a better chance. I just don't have the built in fan base because I lack breasts."

Exactly. Shut up already, Peterman! You make yourself look worse and worse every time we have to hear about your complaints. This whole "dance off" would never have come about if Peterman had been more gracious in losing and if he had just not agreed to do it.

Poor Kelly, I think she is not going to gain anything from this at all. She is either going to lose the vote and have people complain that she didn't deserve to win in the first place, or she is going to win the vote and have the same crap from the media start all over again.
Argillus
This whole "dance off" would never have come about if Peterman had been more gracious in losing and if he had just not agreed to do it.

I honestly don't think that's true. Kelly could have said no, too. I think [paranoia hat]ABC has been cultivating this all along[/paranoia hat]. The network probably threw a ridiculous amount of money at all of them for what is probably at most three weeks work and why on earth would any of them say no?
blackwing
Kelly could have said no, too.
Kelly could have said no, indeed. But then she gets bashed by the media for being a "coward" because they would claim she knew she didn't deserve to have won in the first place, and that she is afraid of proving that she didn't deserve it. I don't think there is any way Kelly ends up looking good no matter what she did.
Lisetta
The network probably threw a ridiculous amount of money at all of them for what is probably at most three weeks work and why on earth would any of them say no?

Yes, I think John and Kelly just don't take this "competition" all that seriously and that neither one really cares at this point if they win or lose.

ABC probably told them, "Do it for your fans; it'll be fun to see a rematch" and threw a huge amount of money their way. The pragmatic decision of course is to, "Take the money and dance."

The fans get to keep the arguments/interest going....JOH and Kelly do their careers and pocketbooks some good...and ABC rakes in the big bucks over summer.

Win-win for everyone!
Svenska Flicka
As for the "dance off", I think he should have refused to participate simply because it -does- make him look like a bad sport, as if, Bobby Flay style, he just couldn't stand losing.

I think he ends up looking like a poor sport no matter what he agreed to...to participate or not. Even comments he may have made in jest (which is in keeping with his typical joking manner, joking about EVERYTHING) are re-printed and quoted as though he was seriously griping about the shows results. But, that said, I don't think either of them (John or Kelly) really had a choice...to participate or not...because they would have been accused of being chickens if they'd said no. Of defensiveness or bitterness. Etc. In a rational world, they could have agreed together to BOTH say no to it, and to present a unified front of saying "C'mon, folks! We had fun with this, it's over, all's good! Let's move along, now." But even if they'd done that, there would STILL be people twisting the situation around. They just can't win.
bludevil
This is just stupid. They're idiots to even agree to do a dance off. Who the hell cares? I know it's money making, but ABC is basically admitting it was a farce by doing a "dance off". Whatever crediability the show once had it is now lost. Ever hear of let sleeping dogs lie...Kelly won, she dances like a Vegas showgirl on a ballroom dance competition, so what, it was over months ago. Move on to the next show.
annlaw78
Poor Kelly, I think she is not going to gain anything from this at all. She is either going to lose the vote and have people complain that she didn't deserve to win in the first place, or she is going to win the vote and have the same crap from the media start all over again.

I think Kelly is going to win again, and the more I think about it, I think this Dance Off will end up being a good thing for her. This win will be just about the public's vote and their subjective and non-expert preference, and she shouldn't be subjected to the "that didn't deserve a perfect score" complaints. And say what you will about all the negative press, it still beats no press, and her win and the resulting controversy definitely increased her visibility. More press coverage into the Fall will only help her career.

I think the exposure she and Alec will get from the Dance Off will be beneficial to both of them. Those who never watched the show, but subsequently learned of all the drama may be interested and tune in, thus introducing them to new viewers and potential fans. I think as between John and Kelly, Kelly will probably come out as more sympathetic (having to defend her win, people trying to discredit her, take her win away, etc.), and John will need to be careful what sort of comments he makes, even if they're intended to be funny/self-deprecating, not to come off as a bit jerky. I mean, this Dance Off runs counter to most peoples' views of "good sportsmanship" (on any given day any team can win, leave it on the court, etc.), and even if it is ABC demanding it for ratings, John runs the risk of seem a poor sport.

I don't see why they couldn't have packaged this new show as something other than a Dance Off (as it appears the British version has several "specials" throughout the year with the winners), but I guess this will pique the interest of the critics, the media, and the viewers more than " AVery Special Dancing With the Stars Exhibition."

Oh, and another plus for Kelly: she gets to spend more QT with Alec (sigh!).
barkley
I agree that Kelly has the potential to come off looking great in this and JOH really needs to watch his step.

Kelly's Maxim cover will be a big boost to her already big fanbase and I'm sure Howard Stern will be pimping her at every opportunity.

Crikey! I just looked through the issue. The inside photo spreads make the cover look tame in comparison.

I assumed the Maxim feature on Kelly Monaco would have an interview to go with the photos, and I was waiting with bated breath for FormerOlympian to tell us all about it. Unfortunately, the photos seem to be pretty overwhelming. ;) I had to go out and buy my first ever Maxim.

The relevant bits:

Is it true your first words upon winning were “Holy shit!”?
Yeah. I couldn’t believe it. Then the host, Tom Bergeron, said something to me, and I went, “Oh, my God! Are we still on air?” And he said, “Yes, honey, we are!” I think the second thing I said was something like “Holy Christ.” I was trying to cover up the “Holy shit!”

Good save. You sure didn’t look like you were going to win after the first episode, when judge Bruno Tonioli said your face looked like somebody had died.
Ah, the notorious first episode. I was shocked that he went there—my family was appalled. My little nephew looked at my mom and said, “Did somebody die?” He really thought someone had died. However, it gave me a kick in the butt and made me work even harder.

Did you want to kick Bruno’s ass?
No, no, no. That’s stooping to their level. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do better than they thought. The first week actually worked in my favor—it got the audience rooting for me.

Don’t you think the fact that your dress broke also helped some?
Ha! Maybe for the judges. I showed them I had a professional side and lots of determination. One of them gave me a standing ovation, and not because the dance was perfect.

After the wardrobe malfunction, what went through your head?
Is there a five-second delay? It’s a live show, and this kind of situation hadn’t been talked about. The whole Janet Jackson thing flew through my mind in a brief second and the network getting fined and people getting fired and stuff like that. It was really scary. But I also thought, If I have to walk thorough the rest of this dance and hold myself up the whole time, then that’s what I’m gonna do—because I’m certainly not going to walk off the stage and give up.

Were there any romantic sparks between you and your partner?
Absolutely not. Alec is a gentleman, an extremely sophisticated, smart young man. Never once did I feel violated or that anything we were doing was inappropriate or uncalled for. He was extremely professional.

But that greasy Russian had his grubby paws all over you!
If that’s what the audience is seeing, then we did our job well. That’s what these dances are about—the passion and the lust and the vulnerability. If they’re seeing that and want to be in his position, that’s wonderful. I think I’m very conditioned from being in this business, especially on soaps, because it’s just part of the job.

OK, so you win the big dance contest. You go to bed, wake up…who is the first person to call you?
Well, I didn’t go to bed. After the contest, ABC threw a party for all the people involved. Then I went home and studied 45 pages of dialogue for General Hospital. Then, at 2 a.m., we had to do Good Morning America, but we had to wait for about four hours because of the bombings in London. I left there at 6:30, was at work at nine, and worked for the next 12 hours. I was close to a nervous breakdown. I got home and was hysterical, just crying in my car.
djork
Wah! Andreanne, I think you forgot some bits...

Were there any romantic sparks between you and your partner?
Absolutely not (sly grin). Alec is a gentleman, an extremely sophisticated, smart young man (licks lips). Never once did I feel violated or that anything we were doing was inappropriate or uncalled for -- 'cuz when it's twu wuv, it can't be wrong. He was extremely professional in bed.

Hee. Sorry, I'm 12.
Thanks for transcribing the article! :)

They all end up smelling like roses. You think John O'Hurley's wedding would even have been considered for inclusion in that E! Hollywood Weddings special if it weren't for this show? He can only profit more from the exposure. And, since I like O'Hurley, good for him.

I don't know how to take Kelly calling Alec "kid" and "young man". If her published age is correct, Alec is only 2 years younger than her.

Of course, she may be using it as a distancing tool because she feels the pull of the suxy.

I like djork's take on the article.
Andreanne
For those who are in withdrawal until the dance-off, a version of Dancing with the Stars is now being broadcast in The Netherlands, and clips can be found on this website:

Definite cute-guy alert in a couple of cases. The only celebrity I've heard of is Inge de Bruijn, but then, I only knew three out of six for the US version. Her clip should be watched last, because it has the final placements for the first dances.

barkley I agree wholeheartedly with the idea KM is trying to put some distance between Alec & herself because if she doesn't you know the Suxy! would get to her. I also think djork caught the intent of KM's comments much more clearly than the interviewer. I looked at the Maxim cover online & it was hot. I can't imagine the inside pix. This girl sexiness is so being wasted on GH.

And congrats to JOH on the wedding, Charlotte must be so heartbroken. I can see My Best Friend's Wedding Part Deux: The Forbidden Waltz!

However, nobody beats the SUXY.

For the shippers --

I recorded Access Hollywood Monday because I wanted to hear Kelly's current response to the dance-off. Well, it was worth it. Djork, I'm counting on you to improve upon my italicized remarks!

AH Tony -- Tell me, um, what your thoughts were when they brought this to you and said, hey, why don't we do this special dance-off?

Kelly -- At first I was, uh, you know, like always, no, I don't need to, I have nothing to prove, I did it, I won and that's that.

AH Nancy -- But the tiny dancer changed her mind, as she told Tony at the Maxim party at ...

Kelly -- It's for a good cause. We're doing this for charity, which is 99.9% of the reason why I'm doing it. (now she reveals the real reason) And I get to learn 3 more dances (meaning I get to rub up against Alec for another month) and (then she tries to cover up for her previous answer) I get to get in kick-ass shape again.

He-heh. I think Kelly fancies Alec as the young buck, she the older, more experienced seducer.

I do know Inge. We met in passing at the '92 Games. It was her first Olympics, and my last. Swimming at the international level is a relatively small world (as it would be in most sports, I guess).

And the Suxy! love keeps on coming!

djork, I adore you and your suxy!-hazed 12-year-old self! Your take on the interviews are way better than what was written or shown. I can just imagine that's what was really going on in Kelly's mind.

The Suxy cannot be denied! *giggle*

I can't wait until Sept. 20. I really hope the suxy duo does a hot little tango number. I would squee myself silly.

ETA: Oh, dear me! I finally saw those Maxim pics and just about fell from my perch on the bed when I saw Kelly. That woman is hot! What in the world is going on in the minds of TIIC that they haven't capitalized on her sexiness in GH?!!! If they ever get off their asses and bring Alec aboard as her hot, young buck (tm djork), I would just totally die of the suxy!chemistry burning up my teevee!
barkley
It's almost criminal how GH took such a sexy woman and stuck her with a costar who won't take his shirt off or do sex scenes. Chaste kisses do not bring the hot.

3 dances? Cool.
blackwing
And congrats to JOH on the wedding
I'm confused; I thought he was already married. There was this 40ish blonde woman in the stands, and I thought he said something on the finale night that he had to thank his wife for allowing him to dance with another woman.

This E Wedding Special, do they take weddings which have already happened in the past and review them? Because how would they get footage of planning, etc.?
Matinee
Didn't see this mentioned here, but if anyone goes to see Mad Hot Ballroom (which was so great, especially since the kids involved are at a perfect age for amusing interactions with the opposite sex, and at an age where they are starting to think about and express larger, more serious opinions and thoughts) Charlotte is a judge in the final competition and can be seen on stage watching and evaluating the kids. Small sighting, but still was cool to see her there.

Thanks SleepDeprived. Woooh! I'd love to see a tango number too! I think that would be the perfect Standard dance for the Suxy!

I really hope they get to dance new styles, with new costumes and everything -- Kelly has yet to do Tango and Cha-cha, John the Waltz and Jive. I don't think I want to see a reprise of older numbers -- I want to remember the chemistry as something unique. I want new fodder for Suxy! analysis :)

I do know Alex. He's a great guy...and looks better in a Speedo than I do. We didn't swim the same events, but I'm sure he would smoke me in freestyle, regardless of the distance.

And I should mention I still see Inge...the last time at Athens. I'm retired, but still enjoy making the rounds to the major meets, World Championships and Olympics.

Sorry, wrong dance show!!!

Thanks mully, the suxy has gone to my head.
mully
barkley, me thinks you're succumbing to suxy heat exposure:
Thank you Dan for bagging on the shredded pajama look that Blake and Artem had to wear this week.

That had to be Mia's doing since both costumes were the same.

Aren't you talking about So You Think You Can Dance? I watched it tonight too, their quick-steps gave me laugh.

Also, I got this from the General Hospital thread (JO'H fans tune in!) - it's from TV Guide:

ABC is sparing no publicity stunts to ensure that viewers will tune in for its Dancing with the Stars: Dance-Off special on Sept. 20. That same day's episode of General Hospital will feature a cameo appearance by Kelly Monaco's ballroom rival, John O'Hurley. The Seinfeld alum plays one of two policemen who knock on the door of Monaco's character, Sam McCall, looking for her mobster boyfriend Jason Morgan (Steve Burton). Can we expect a wink to the Dancing re-match airing later that night? Of course, but only a teensy one. "John has no lines," a show rep tells TVGuide.com. "He's just there. Kelly and John give each other a knowing look, but that's it."

I don't really know what to think of it. Oh, my lord! is pretty close.

I finally uploaded the Access Hollywood clip here.

And I'll join in 20 questions with FormerOlympian -- Did you swim breastroke?
Want2Sleep
I know you're going to throw things at me but at this point in time I would rather chat with FormerOlympian than talk about the dancing show.

Carry on...........

I appreciate the compliment, but I'm sure the mods would prefer we stay on topic. Plus, I'm afraid a game of 20 questions might reveal my identity.

So, in the spirit of staying on topic, here's a link to some of Kelly's pictures from Maxim. Just click on any of the thumbnails and you'll get a slideshow of sorts. It's safe for work. No nudity. Just lingerie and sweaty, teeny-tiny workout clothes.

Kelly Monaco Reveals Tough Past

Kelly Monaco became America's sweetheart practically overnight . . . But Monaco's life before "Dancing with the Stars" was actually filled with tragedy and tears, and for the first time, the actress opened up . . .

Monaco revealed her story in a candid interview with OK! magazine, and only "Extra" has it. OK! Editor in Chief Sarah Ivens revealed that Monaco survived everything from homelessness to an attempted rape to a bout with teenage alcoholism before rising to fame.

"Who could have guessed a soap opera star could have had such a soap opera past," Ivens noted. "She's admitted to OK! that she started experimenting with alcohol and drugs between the ages of 11 and 13."

Monaco, who once posed for Playboy, also revealed that when she first came to Los Angeles to peruse her Hollywood dream, she lived out of her car for two months and survived on $1 Chinese food.

But the biggest shocker that Monaco revealed was the time she was almost raped. The actress told the magazine that on one of her first jobs, she was drugged by a would-be rapist, saying, "I did a job in Montreal, and I got drugged. I had to get myself out of what could have been a very premeditated rape."

But at age 29, Monaco has been with only one man -- a boyfriend she refuses to name. "She was a virgin for years," Ivens revealed. "And she's been with the same guy since she was 15. She's madly in love with him."

Looks like Kelly Monaco truly is a survivor!

Oops, FormerOlympian, please accept my apology for the innocent question. You've been a great sport and it's nice to have a guy around.

Back on topic, I went through the entertainment shows I recorded since the dance-off was announced and actually found the clip honeyimameal quoted above. It's from Extra on 8/24. I had to cut it down to upload, so I edited out all the host chat, which is included in the quotes.

And, yes, there's a big ole red plaid shirt that's trying to rip our ship's sails, but I'm not going to let it. lalalalala

"She was a virgin for years," Ivens revealed.

Aren't most people virgins for years? I hope so!

Re: Kelly and Alec's (sigh!) lurve. After watching Artem and his partner on So You Think You Can Dance I think a lot of the nuzzling and gratuitous after-performance touching between partners may be par for the course in ballroom. Artem, who is married, for those who don't watch SYTYCD, was being very touchy-feely with his dance partner last night, even more so than I ever really saw between Kelly and Alec. I wonder if it isn't something they're trained to do -- even when the dance is over, keep up the act of feeling the emotions of the dance until you're off the floor and out of sight.

But I'm sure Kelly and Alec really DO love each other!
