Bring on the Cheese cha cha cha!

Great summer fluff, IMO. I'm too old to have crushed on Joey in his NKOTB phase, but I thought he did well. Somehow, I found Evander strangely hot. That has never happened before to me. To me, the best dancer was John. He has lovely bedroom eyes, IMO. He totally hammed up his performance and that's what made it great to me.
biggusreddus
During our ballroom lessons, the prevailing theme was: "The lady is the picture, the gentleman is the frame." I hated it during dance class, because I had to kick and spin and gesture like a wildwoman while my husband stood ramrod straight and made sure I didn't spin off into the atmosphere. The dancers who catch my eye are the men who present their partners well, not preen all over the screen, like the majority of these professional male partners/tools.

For that reason, I give the night to J. Peterman. I was aware of him, but in a nice way. Evander was distracting with his shimmy, and Joey looked like he was goosestepping.

On the ladies side, as much as I hate it, I liked Trista and her pal. They actually danced and didn't just do spectacular slow kicks. Trista's expression was manic all right, but it beat Kelly (who had her tango face on) and Rachel (who had no face on).
radiochik
And Joey looks great! But are those his real teeth? He seemed to have the same overbite problem Apprentice Bill (Boyfriend Bill) has now, where his teeth take up most of his face.

I was wondering the same thing about his teeth....they looked fake. I have no idea what his teeth looked like in his NKOTB days as I wasn't a fan but little Joey Mac grew up nice!!!

I"m kinda meh on the show though. I should never go into something with high expectations because I'm always let down. I was kind of bored and I can't stand Tom Bergeron so his involvement caused me to tune out whenever he was on.

I felt bad for Kelly. I didn't realize I could only vote once online and spent a vote for Joey before I could get one in for her. Although admittedly, I didn't see Triscuit or J Peterman dance. I was at a friend's house and bailed out early due to my lack of excitement over the actual show. I'll tune in next week to see if I like it any better. Plus there really isn't anything on competing against it yet so I"ll probably watch it by default.
MsLark
I really wasn't going to watch this, but woke up in the middle of Evander's number and got hooked. So, I'll probably be watching the rest. I liked John O'Hurley & Charlotte best. She's lively and he's poised. Works for me. Voted online for them this morning. Not about to f* with the voting lines.

I like Tom Bergeron, too.

Twista in peeeenk? BoOoOoOring. Please get off our televisions now and forever.

The Joey-love I had as a 13-year-old has come back with a vengeance. Plus, his partner is adorable. I am rooting for them, but am a little torn. I also loved J. Peterman and even Trista!

I can't believe I am hooked on this show. "Strictly Ballroom" is one of my favorite movies, but I didn't think this sounded so hot. I am pleasantly surprised.

amyphee is my Internet twin!

Word on all of that EXCEPT Trista. Can't bring myself to like her even a little bit, and how much did I laugh when they listed her profession as "Reality TV Star"? A lot.

J. Peterman rocked it like he was filming a ballroom movie. Awesome.

And seeing Joey certainly brought the long dormant squeeeeeeee out of me.

I didn't want to watch. I swear. I kept trying to watch the stupid King of Queens repeat, but I just couldn't resist flipping back to this until finally I gave up and accepted my fate as a cheeseaholic.

Against my better judgement, LOVE THIS SHOW!

Former cha-cha champion from 8th grade social dance class reporting for duty!

WORD! In my neck of the woods ol' Joanna Fishbein is smiling down from heaven on the powers at ABC - she taught social dancing to all the 7th and 8th graders in my town for over 30 years. I can STILL do a mean cha-cha!

on topic: I thought this was a hoot and can't wait to see how everyone improves over the course of the show.

Joey was good but his NKOTB was not my era of teenybopper idols so I just liked him from a dancing sense. His partner was darling and they looked like they were enjoying themselves as they danced.

Evander, I confess was HOT! I too was looking for the chewed ear - I think it's his left one (as you're looking at him), it looked a little funky. Someone upthread mentioned how the man is the background which would make his dancing pretty good.

Rachel looked like she was terrified! And she should have had her hair pinned back - messy messy!

John O'Hurley was one of the best, he actually looked like he knew what he was doing and was fun to watch.

Kelly did get screwed although I said to myself, myself I said she's looking a little solemn but I think that's how they usually look when they waltz. Hmm, judges didn't agree.

Trista was very good and watching the back story made me like her a wee bit more. Bad back - ouch. I enjoyed watching her and tried voting for her but don't know if it actually went though or not!

Can't wait for next week!!
katisha66
Wow, this thread is fairly flying along. Good to see. I think this show is one of those guilty pleasures definitely worth the trouble. And the good news is, if it goes to a second season, there's a good chance the class of celebrity will improve a bit if the Australian example is anything to go by.
becca656
I think I'm a little confused. You mean to tell me that all the couples have to learn next week's dance prior to knowing if they're actually gonna have to perform it?? All that work and they might get sent home before they get to show what they've learned?

The one and only one thing that annoyed me about the show last night was Trista's dancing. Not that she was bad, but she mugged the camera the whole time (with the aforementioned phony cheerleader smile). Seems to me, when ballroom dancing, attention is paid to the partner, not the camera. I wish the judges would've called her out on the lack of response to the partner.
PittsburghDiva
I am hooked. My favorites were J Peterman and Joey McIntyre. I saw Joey in "Wicked" on Broadway and was pleasantly suprised at how good he was. I agree that he and his partner looked like they were having a blast.

Loved J Peterman- "I am the oldest one here and I am wearing the most spandex!" I think he is a very attractive guy.

Yes, Kelly was robbed. I thought she looked the most like a traditional ballroom dancer. She and her partner hate each other. I was suprised when the chick interviewing them said, "You two seem to really like each other." Huh? Kelly gave a pat "he is a hard worker" line.
rosjaq
I'm going to indulge in this guilty pleasure since last night's episode got me totally hooked. Add me to the 'former ballroom dancer' viewership.

But hey, I thought Evander was so adorable that I'd just give him a vote or two.

Word. John O'Hurley was also pretty good, but I think Evander was having the best time out there. Even though I hated most of the music that was used, John and Evander brought a real spirit of pleasure to the competition. They really looked like they were interested in the dance and had great compatibility with their partners.

Kelly did get screwed although I said to myself, myself I said she's looking a little solemn but I think that's how they usually look when they waltz.

When I competed (Latin ballroom - samba was my specialty), the trads (waltzers) always performed before we did. The smiles were plastered to their faces, calibrated by their pivots and adjusted when they pirouetted. On that end, the judges were right, but part of me was happy she didn't have a phony, painted-on faux smile. I think she'll do better in other dances because her footwork was decent and she had good extension.
lilybird
I was too distracted by J. Peterman's man-boobs to concentrate on his dancing! That outfit was tragic.

I think if Joey and his partner had danced last instead of first, they would have gotten the highest scores.

It took a lot of balls to get on that dance floor. The soap star looked terrified!
jester pron
Okay Joey and his partner just need to ditch this show and go have children. The two of them are so hot my tv almost blew up. I think they worked well together on the floor. I think they embraced the fact that the woman was the better dancer and didn't force the number to look like Joey was leading but just flowed and let the stronger partner dictate the flow. That one judge was right in that in some segments Joey did look like he was stomping a la "Hangin Tough" but he was still the best by far. Didn't I read somewhere he was a tap dancer as well? Maybe I'm confused.

Rachel looked VERY nervous and tight but damn she is still amazingly gorgeous.

Kelly got screwed. She looked great in my opinion.
kellygirl
As much as I love dancing I was trying to cut down on the tv viewing for the summer, so my main reason for tuning in was Kelly Monaco. It was very disheartening to see her with such a drip of a partner and then get unfairly harshed upon by the judges. Yes, she could have been more expressive but I thought they did reasonably well on a technical level.

Joey and the cute giggly girl were probably the best but I really have to go against the tide of opinion as far as John was concerned. His partner was great but he looked like someone who's taken dancing lessons dancing at a party or wedding - competent but not professional. Still, I'd put them in 3rd place (Joey first and Kelly second).

Evander's boogieing was distracting but he at least looked like he was enjoying himself. I hardly know what to say about Rachel. With her height she was the opposite of delicate and her attitude in the training clips pissed me off. And speaking of clips, what was Trista doing in a church? That just seems wrong and vaguely offensive (though I am not at all religious). She has got to stop smiling and I totally agree about that walk thing at the end of their routine. I honestly thought she must've signaled to her partner that she was having a back issue and they had to cut the end of the routine off - that's how strange and out of place it seemed.

Overall? Oh yes, I will be back next week.
hissyfit
Strictly Ballroom is one of my all time favorite movies and while I have only seen ballroom dancing a few times on tv, I love to watch it. The moronic host made it harder to watch, but it was fun to watch the dance. Peterman rocked. He seemed to catch the spirit of ballroom dancing the most of the nondancers. I thought that the professionals seemed a bit divalike and arrogant, but maybe that is the norm for them. I hated that the host cut the judge's short when they were trying to critique the dances, I wanted to hear the specifics of what they wanted to say.

And audience? It's not a hockey game. Shut up with the booing.
Pixel
It did not suck as much as I thought it would. And that’s actually high praise. But how did Crazy in Love become cha cha music?
I have found that you can cha-cha to just about any pop music. It's silly, but that's what we use in class. We used to use Spice Girls music to practice cha-cha.
mtlchickie
Okay Joey and his partner just need to ditch this show and go have children. The two of them are so hot my tv almost blew up.

His wife may have an issue with that. And for those who asked...his teeth have ALWAYS looked like that. Thankfully, the hair has improved since 1990.
ferretrick
Ahh...the smell of delicious cheeeeeeeese.

Paul Mercurio is SO my movie boyfriend. I even suffered through the 9 1/2 Weeks sequel just because of him.

Marry me Pixel. I've done the same.

I thought Kelly was going for a whole "ice queen" persona, and that's why her face was so frozen. Unfortunately, the judges hated it and it backfired on her. A shame, too, cause the girl has a lovely smile.

Shut up, every one of the professional dancers whose names I haven't learned yet who pulled the "I'm too sexy for my D-list celebrity partner and this crappy show" shtick. That goes for men and women, Evander's partner.

Shut up, Tom Bergeron. Word to everyone who pointed out what the lawn/flowers critiqute really meant. (although, in Tom's defense that was an assanine metaphor-obviously the guy was going for one of Simon Cowell's patented "It was like..." comparisons).

I don't necessarily think John and Charlotte are the best dancers technicly, but they easily had the most chemistry of any of the couples and worked together really well. I kind of hate her, though, for pronouncing Charlotte as Charlotta. Ugh.

Did the judges misplace all their paddles that had, you know, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 on them?

ETA: I have no idea why I want to keep calling John "Nick"
baby pickles
My "Bo Lost Idol" blues were immediately cured after I watched this last night. Although I know NOTHING about ballroom dancing, I found it highly entertaining and fun.

I liked Joey and his partner the best. They really moved well together and individually. He was by far the best of the male "celebrities".

Am I the only one who saw the weird things happening with Evander's mouth?

Nope. I saw that too ... looked like he was biting the sides of his cheeks throughout the entire dance. Plus he moved around like a bag of boulders. And somehow I found him totally adorable.

Rachel Hunter was also quite a load.... she wasn't very graceful, and should have brushed her hair before taking the stage.

Kelly and her partner were decent, as were Trista and hard-ponytail guy. But I didn't care for some of her arm movements after her spins ... a little to Chorus Line for me. I think they will both be better at the cha cha cha.

When do we find out who gets booted?!
portergirl99
Oh man, that was delicious. Peterman, I think I love you. I own Strictly Ballroom (DVD and the soundtrack) so this show is my reality crack this summer.

Rachel did look nervous, but damn! she has a great set of legs. I thought Kelly got the shaft as well -- IMO she and her partner just seemed to float across the floor. I thought they did a fantastic job.

I fell asleep before Triscuit, and maybe that's a good thing. Can't wait for next week!
isiscloud
Along with that Trista thing. Loved how they cut to show her famewhore bitch, I mean husband. Did they ever cut to anyone else's significant other? And I know "star" is subjective. But the term "reality show star" is an oxymoron.

That peeved me as well. When Ryan was on "Celebrity" Fear Factor (don't judge, please) she showed up to support him. Gag. And, yes, they both can get off my screen any time soon, although Ryan's a cutie.

But if you've ever taken a ballroom class, you find out that it's way harder for the men, because they have to lead it.

I thought about this, too, but the only who actually did any leading was John O’Hurley. I think this is why they selected the dances they did. With the waltz, the men would have had to do more leading although the women did have to do the spins and a little more intricate footwork. In the cha cha cha, the men were the frame for the women.

The other guys just did a few steps and let the woman do the rest, which is the way the dance works anyway but still. I wonder if the teams who did the cha cha this week have to do a waltz next week and vice versa? Will it be a foxtrot and Tango?

What in the hell could the judges possible have against her? And her ear problem is real; she's partially, if not not totally deaf in one ear.

I don’t think she did horribly, but she stumbled a few steps. While she had nice posture, she at least needed a fake smile to pull it off. You would think they would have paired her with Rachel’s partner and Rachel with Kelly’s partner to make them match in height at least. Rachel seemed like a beast compared to her partner and she needed to keep her hair back better.

I thought that the professionals seemed a bit divalike and arrogant, but maybe that is the norm for them.

The men were 10000% worse than the women in their divaness. They had to play up their masculinity so we don’t think less of them. HA. Louis van Amstel? Please! I was thinking his hair was bound like a horse's tail, but the other works just as well.

I kind of hate her, though, for pronouncing Charlotte as Charlotta. Ugh.

She's European, right? If so, I can forgive her.

Oh, Paul Mercurio! yayay. From the Strictly Ballroom commentary, he was a modern dancer, which is why they selected him. Tina Spahkle!

Thanks for setting me straight! I'm going to go find Strictly Ballroom this weekend.
Fraoch
Did I miss something last night--did they ever say how they chose these particular judges and what their qualifications were (other than showing their names with "TV choreographer" or whatever on the screen)? Why not get some judges that the viewers will be slightly familiar with? Get choreographer Toni Basil. Get Sandy Duncan (she used to always host the ballroom dance competitions on PBS, though she might not anymore).

Also, is there a reason all the couples didn't waltz or cha-cha? It seemed kind of unfair to rank them together when they didn't all do similar dances.

I'm still calling John O'Hurley as my favorite, though it was entertaining to watch Evander (who seemed to not be ballroom dancing so much as "gyrating and hitting on your aunt at a wedding reception").
katms
Holy god, the BODY on Evander's partner!! What's her name, Edita? I am a straight female and I could NOT take my eyes off of her. Now THAT is some good DNA. DAAAYUM! I was very glad for the distraction of her slammin' bod, cuz everytime I looked elsewhere I saw Evander's face mid-seizure. Uh, are you ok, Evander? Very handsome man, but what the hell was up with that? Thank god one of the judges called him out about it.

Missed Joey, so pissed about that.

Why don't they just call this "Dancing with Trista"? Were there any fade to commercials that didn't zoom in on her annoying mugging face? Why won't they just BOTH GO AWAY? I thought I was safe from Ryan at least, but no...there he was in the audience, the big goon.
rosjaq
I'm going to go find Strictly Ballroom this weekend.

Hey, that's what I just did! I've seen it every time it's been on cable, but last night's show reminded me it was time to get one of my own.

For all of you who have seen (been annoyed by) Trista, I have a question: did she really imply that she was trying to silence the naysayers who call her a 'reality show talent' by going on....another reality show? Was that my imagination or did she say something along those lines?
andeely
Joey and his partner were darling. John O'Hurley had huge personality out there and wasn't too shabby. They're definitely the two teams I'm rooting for. I thought Kelly did much better than the judges gave her credit for and Trista, meh. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. My kids liked Rachel because they thought her dress was pretty and Evander's facial expressions were killing me, I thought maybe he was reliving the ear biting incident.
JoJoGinger
I have always thought that I was the only person that had a fixation with Strictly Ballroom (which was why I couldn't resist this show) and I can't tell you nice it feels to know that there are others out there who know what "Vivir con miedo, es como vivir a medias" means.

Again . . . squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Can we get Paul Mercurio to be a guest judge? Please?!

ETA: Trista was saying that people say reality show stars have no "talent" (yes), so she wanted to prove that she has talent (no), so people will quit thinking of her as "Trista the Bachelorette" and start thinking of her as "Trista the Dancer" (no).
Milz
I made Mr. Milz watch this with me last night. I used to watch "Championship Ballroom Dancing" on PBS with my grandma during the 90s.

I was kind of disappointed in the dances last night because they were doing the Smooth dance styles, rather than the Standard and Latin styles.
katms
did she really imply that she was trying to silence the naysayers who call her a 'reality show talent' by going on....another reality show?
I heard her say something along the lines of people just think of her as "Trista the Bachelorette", but now maybe they'll think of her as "Trista the Dancer". I would prefer to think of her as "Trista the Ann Taylor Employee Who Never Gets a TV Gig Again".

I just went to the show's ABC site to look up Edyta. Also clicked on Joey's stats - if he's 5'10, then I now am "katms the Very Skeptical".

Aw, Trista, I don't think of you as "Trista the Bachelorette."

I think of you as "Trista the Annoying Famewhore From Hell Who Won't STFU and Get Off My TV!"
andeely
One question I have about this show. What does the winner, eh, win? Is this the typical celebrity 'donation to the charity of your choice' type of victory or is it just the title of "Best Celebrity Dancer"?
Pepper Mostly
I thought the way they treated Kelly was completely unfair. Yes, she was stiff, but this was her first time dancing and she had some difficult moves. Why did she get attacked and Evander, who did nothing but run around in some kind of "Hercules!" dance, get praised?

Because Evander was adorable and vulnerable and oh so lovable, and she was a po-faced, whiny old crab? Eh, I had no love for Kelly at all, found her dancing wooden and her personality off putting.

Another John and Charlotte fan here. He was great-I loved how he paid attention to things like where his hands were, his facial expression, his posture. And I loved his exuberance, he was having fun and not afraid to let it show. Joey and Ashly were very cute, though I agreed with the judge who told him to watch his footwork. Rachel and partner were not so great, but I cut her slack since she was sick. Trista and partner were meh to me, loved Evander and his slinky partner. (Women ballroom dancers have just the most beautiful bodies in the world, don't they? They have a little meat on their bones, they're strong and muscular but not ripped looking, they have curves. I'm a straight girl, but, hubba hubba!)

And Bruno? Is my new TV Gay Roommate. He had me giggling uncontrollably. Love.
ColeenR
And so commences my summer fling with Joey Mac's hips.
Yeehaw!

I'm ten years too old to have been an open and out NKOTB fan. Closet, yes. Hee! I've always had a thing for pretty, pretty men who can gyrate to dah music.

That was more delightful and fun than I thought it would be. And its rating on the cheese-o-meter was high, too. I grinned for the whole hour.

And Kelly's partner? Smarmy, a little oily, but hot. His ass is smokin. [\Boston Rob]

And I loves me some J. Peterman, too. Going to save that tape and, if I ever go back to choreographic middle and high school kids in spring musicals, it's a perfect example of the answer to the question:

Q If I do this cheesy shit that I'm totally ill-equipped for, how do I not look like complete ass?
A By totally going for it, to hell with the naysayers!!!

He won my heart with his 'tude.
Sumner
I loved Dance Fever back in the day so I had to watch this show!

Word on Evander and his bizarro facial expressions. Very distracting. He did make me laugh though. I thought Kelly got screwed too, she was my favorite female dancer. She seemed pretty po'd about the judges comments, like I put up with my jackass partner for this? John was so smooth and fun to watch. Joey I think has the most "potential" as the judges kept saying.Trista...zzzzzzzz. Finally, Rachel. I cannot believe this woman was once a supermodel with her haggard looks and her Pekingese looking face. And I know she was supposedly sick, I just mean in general she looks rough these days.

I laughed everytime they said the judge Bruno's name b/c that is my little Chihuahua's name. I don't know, I think I was all giddy and high from this show.
nima1031
I thought I was over Joey... I was so wrong. Him and his partner were so cute together. I loved John O'Hurley, just because he had fun with it.

Bruno should so commentate for soccer on the Spanish television. I love his voice.

I'm so jealous of Edyta's body. I'd kill for just abs like she has.

I now have something to watch before Lost!
Arabesque
And finally, they found Lisa from Entertainment Tonight. She's alive!

Oh, thank goodness someone else was irrationally interested to see Lisa Canning from ET! I also thought she was adorable and wondered what happened to her; she just disappeared.
I am totally a non-voter. I never vote. Never. But hey, I thought Evander was so adorable that I'd just give him a vote or two.

He was so cute! I thought he and his partner got the biggest (positive) audience reaction, but that was just my impression. Probably because the image of a big tough boxer trying so hard out on the dance floor is entertaining.

I don't get why some guys think it's not masculine to dance. Baryshnikov anyone? I think men who can dance are sexy. I could watch Gene Kelly dance all day.

Kelly might have had that look on her face because she was trying not to throw up after all those spins. They really did the most "dancing" of the waltz couples IMO, Rachel did a lot of posing and "flowers", and Trista sucks just on principle, but that walk thing at the end was ridiculous.

I thought Joey was the best, followed by John, Kelly, Evander, Rachel, and Trista (who could be Ginger Rogers and I still wouldn't vote for her).

Trista, I don't want to think about you as "Trista the Bachlorette", I don't want to think about you at all, and if ABC is even thinking for one second about "Trista and Ryan have a Baby", I'm boycotting.

I enjoyed this a lot more than professional competitive ballroom dancing. Why? Because the men here who -weren't- professionals actually displayed more virility/magnetism than many pros (that includes you "God's gift to the world"). It may just be the stylized requirements of high-level ballroom competitions, but I found these men more interesting to watch.

I agreed with the judges' comments about careless footwork, posture, attitude, etc. but overall Joey, Evander and my favorite, John, brought a lot of sex appeal to their dancing that I didn't feel from the experts here. I think it was the "hotness factor" (and the effort he was making when it clearly didn't come naturally) that made Evander's marks higher than his dancing alone would have.

Trista was okay to me, except for the two or three times she seemed to actually be laughing which was...too much. I felt sorry for Rachel because although she looked lovely, she struggled with her waltz, and seemed even -less- graceful because she was paired with such a tiny man.

I liked the judges (even liked the host with his cheesy jokes, just because he wasn't making it pretentious--and he was encouraging). I also agreed with the "lawn/flowers" comment for Kelly, but I thought she did the dance she was taught better than she got credit for. After all, music and choreography ("flowers") are probably decided by someone else.

Is this customary for some couples on this show (thinking Australia) to do one kind of dance while others do something totally different? And is there any idea that learning one of these (cha-cha, waltz) is easier for beginners than the other?

Fun show.

I also loved Evander! I don't care if all he ever does is stand in one spot and shuffle his feet while every other couple does twirls and fancy footwork, he just looked so adorable. I'm not watching this to decide which celebrity (or in Trista's case "celebrity") is the best dancer, I'm watching this to have some good, cheesy fun. And watching big, tough Evander try to dance and wiggle his bum is just so adorable, I want him around until the end!

I'm also pleased with the fact that they limit the amount of votes to 5 calls per household. Unlike AI where someone can vote 2 billion times if they want, this way seems much more fair.

But I loved Joey MacIntyre when I was five

Oy. I was in college. :::wanders off to take her Geritol:::

Rachel Hunter, who has decided to be normal sized -- good for her.

Word. I love seeing normal sized women on my TV. More normal sized women, please.

"I am a paaattttnnneerrr and sexual [think she was trying to say "panther"] and animalistic."

What was she WEARING? I think you can have some of your body parts covered and still be sexy. Particularly when you’re doing ballroom dance!

I guess it didn't bother anyone else, but I just thought it looked skanky in the context she was wearing it.

I loved this show!!! I understand some of the criticisms leveled here against it & the contestants, but I think that my expectations are so low for this show, that I actually enjoyed how cheesy & schlocky (sp?) it was! The music? Fabulous. The variety of pairings & c-lister quasi-celeb's? Fabulous! Tom Bergeron as host? Surprisingly good! I didn't care that the judging is a little confusing (what is their role, exactly? I don't think anyone is clear on that point...but who cares?!!!). I'm along for the ride, definitely. I was clapping along, singing & laughing like a little girl during the show. My husband even watched it and thought it was great fun...and it was nice to have a show (very clean, just pure good fun) that my kids could sit along with us and watch.

I think I'm a little confused. You mean to tell me that all the couples have to learn next week's dance prior to knowing if they're actually gonna have to perform it?? All that work and they might get sent home before they get to show what they've learned?

But, that's the way that most of these types of shows work, isn't it? I mean, American Idol, Nashville Star, and so forth...you prepare for the next show, not knowing if you'll actually be moving forward or not, performing or not. I don't have a problem with it, it goes with the territory & is the chance you take!

Okay...here's my personal ranking:
#1 Joey/Ashly...both of them just TOO cute for words, and danced really well!
#2 John/Charlotte...this is a VERY close 2nd, and I actually voted for them over Joey/Ashly (though I think that Joey/Ashly were slightly better technically). BTW, I was able to vote online this morning.
#3 Rachel/Jonathan...I thought they did quite well, and she was very graceful and lovely.
#4 Kelly/Alec...I have no idea who she is, and he seemed like kind of an ass, but they danced quite well I thought.
#5 Trista/Louis...She's always somewhat annoying to watch, no matter what she's doing...but I think that they did a pretty good job together. Very graceful. (BTW, whoever refered to his ponytail as a 'dildo-ponytail'...BWAH!!!!)
#6 Evander/Edyta...Oh, my. I love Evander, and it's not that I didn't enjoy watching him (yummmmyyy....), but when I watched him dance I sure wasn't thinking "ballroom dancing". I was thinking "disco smarmy".

She probably wisely realized what a TV version of the Enquirer Entertainment Tonight was becoming and jumped ship

Early numbers: 13.32 million, the only show to get more than 10 million last night.

And I agree with Rachel about the 5 calls per phone line rule. Makes it seems somewhat more balanced, though there are some who would be creating 7000 email addresses . I remember they did that for Fame 2-3 years ago. (Whatever happened to THAT winner?)

I called everyone I knew last night to tell them to turn this on. What a fantastical trainwreck. We were feverishly calling each other on commercial breaks to cackle like laying hens.

Has anyone checked out the website?

That little twerp paired up with Rachael Hunter claims to be 6 feet tall, which explains why poor Rachael got stuck with him.

If he's six feet tall, then I'm Yao Ming. (hint: I'm NOT.)

I respectfully disagree with everyone who slights Rachael. She was the only one of the three woman actually finishing her movements with any style at all. She had an unfortunate choice of dresses because it didn't show off her footwork which was less clunky than the other two except for one stumble on a turn. She had much more attractive lines than the other two. Every time she and her partner separated, they always met right on beat and in the right position.

Kelly was so behind the beat that her partner had to pick her up and carry her a few times just to keep them from losing it. Her body position was messy and stiff and her footwork was very stompy. However, she was better than Trista.

Trista totally missed her beats several times to the point that her partner couldn't save her, despite valiant efforts and emphatic movements of the dildo-tail. She never finished a single move just ran off for the next one. Reminded me of the four year olds at the ballet recital.

I am more in agreement with the majority assessment of the men. Joey had some flat footwork, but overall best moves and most fluid transitions. John had the most panache. Evander was cute, but very much a fixed object around which his partner did everything but turn herself inside out.

I will so be watching this next week. We might have to institute a pool like the ones we run for Survivor and Amazing Race.

Now THAT was a wheel of cheddar with a side of swiss, all smothered in a hot Velveeta sauce. What an awesomely cheesy guilty pleasure to take the place of the American Idol results shows on Wednesdays.

Since I officially know less than nothing about professional ballroom dancing, is it a prerequisite that the guy has to be a dickwad? Because, those male professional dancers last night? Were major dickwads. And Evyta was pretty much their female counterpart. I thought Charlotte was classy, and Ashly is completely adorable. She's my new TV BFF.

Liking this show is as embarrassing as being caught by your mother lip-syncing ABBA songs (playing on a record player, thank you very much) into your hairbrush. I’m the only one who ever did that? Sigh.

(Was I the only one who suddenly had visions of Denny Terio? Does anyone even remember DT?)

dreamy, are we related? Owned a record player? Guilty. ABBA? Guilty. Remember Denny Terrio and Dance Fever? Guilty.

Shit. I might be old, y'all.

I really enjoyed this show. Loved the cheesy contemporary music, loved Tom Bergeron, loved the guy celebs.

-How's come all the women 'stars' had issues? Rachel and her barfing, Kelly and her equilibrium problems, my issue with Trista...er, I mean Trista and her back? And they had to make sure we, the audience understood what little soldiers they were to get through the dance. "How's your back?" "Fine!"

-Want Joe(y) Mac to go far. Wouldn't even mind some backstage canoodling between him and his cute partner.

-Liked J Peterman as well, although I don't think the "Grace Kelly of Ballroom Dancing" might have really appreciated his "WE'RE the oldest ones here" statement.
her ugly partner (who looked like Patrick Swayze's uglier brother)

I kept thinking Phil Hartman could have destroyed Loooooooooouie in an SNL skit. RIP, Phil.

Pleaseplease let this go on for more than one season. I'm thinking Rob and Ambuh will be looking for a gig pretty soon, and why not this? Let 'em dance together, split 'em up, I don't care. I just want to see the jerk in dance pants.

as a boxing fan, i watched because of holyfield -- and was on the edge of my seat while he was, um, "dancing". i was praying he didn't fall down!

do the rest of you non-boxing fans realize that he has SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE? it's been reported in the sports press, but it hasn"t made headlines. the decline in his speaking abilities is tragic -- you can tell that he's been whomped upside the head a few too many times in the past few years. now, evander's never been the elocutionist that ali had been, but at least in the apst, he could put a simple sentence together in an interview. he should have retired after that tyson fiasco, but instead, continued fighting past his prime. he still looks great, but sadly, the brain is rattling around a little too much.

also, was that oscar de la hoya in the audience? he was behind tom bergeron, every time they would cut to a "funny" aside.

said & done -- joey & the perky fan should win. the others - meh.

(and word about the crackalistical "rap"!)

I feel like such a dork that I taped this show, but I found it harmless entertainment. Not as much dancing as I hoped, too much talking & killing time: couple dances, talk to judges, talk to host, go backstage, talk to second host, judges score. Geez, give me more of the 5 weeks trying to learn to dance, more real dancing & let the judges talk & judge at the same time.

Rachel: I agree with y’all that said Rachel ended up looking ungainly next to her partner. They seemed ill-suited, at least on a physical scale, he made her look like a giant & not graceful.

J. Peterman: Loved him! He seemed to be really having a good time, trying hard, and he & his partner clicked. I think they did great together.

Evander: Kind of middle of the road for me. He tried, did okay, but only okay.

Joey: Enjoyed it a lot! His partner was so much fun to watch & he seemed to be trying & having a good time with her.

Trista: Better than I expected. She smiled too much (I wondered if she would being a dancer/cheerleader and all). She did seem to have the moves down, but not anything that stood out.

Kelly: I thought they did better than the stupid judges said. I did think she looked like she was concentrating: hard :during the dance, but she was dancing. I too wondered if she was worried her partner would wallop her if she made mistakes. If I had watched this in time to vote, I would have voted for them just to screw the judges.

I too hated the music. I could take the band, but leave off the lyrics. They are cheesy, distracting, and not that good. I didn’t mind Tom as host, his little attempts at witty comments are fine with me, isn’t comedy gold, but I can laugh along.

winterwhitewolf You summed up my feelings about the pro dancers so well that I can't add anything useful. Thanks.

Overall, I will continue watching. Bring on the cheese, my summer needs some. Now, when does Average Joe start...

re Evander:

Isn't that sort of a prerequisite for agreeing to go on this show in the first place?
Quite Nutty
I don't claim to be an expert on ballroom dancing - like, at all. But I did take a basic class in college (easy A if you showed up every day and tried all the dances). So I was watching their feet. Did Trista ever even do the basic waltz step once? Is this a style I'm just not familiar with because they don't teach it in basic classes? I was shocked that the judges didn't mention it.

Evander didn't do a basic cha-cha-cha, either, but he was simply adorable, so I'll cut him some slack. And J. Peterman, I forgot how much I loved you.

**ahem** You guys aren't alone. How about my friend and I being Agnetha (me) and Anni-Frid (her) after school everyday in my living room? Uh yes, it happened. We wore that record out.
