I searched through tis forum and could not find any thread which discussed the music played. Probobly because omar has made his feeling for the "Alt-rock crap" pretty obvious but not all of us feel this way.
I'd like to start this discussion with an ode to the first good thing al and miles have done this season, including old punk bands like green day and my personal favorite social distortion into the girly music that plays most of the time therefore bring a balance to the musical side of smallville. now only if we could do something about lana's self obsessed insanity we could save the show.

The inclusion of Green Day in "Jinx" wasn't the work of AlMiles - the WB tells them what to play.
Coincidentally, Old Spice deoderant was pimped in the same episode.

it still worked to at leasthve some decent music in an episode even if it was forced.
The social distortion song was also in that ep and it was used pretty well.
The old spice thing did get extreemly anoying because no company is going to sposor a football game in kansas

I think there used to be another music thread, right? But due to inactivity it got shuffled off in one of the purges.
Anyway, the recent posts about the Lifehouse Clana video got me thinking about the music on this show again.
Love: Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" at the end of Shattered, and Massive Attack's "Future Proof" in Asylum. And "What do I Have to Do?" by Stabbing Westward in the opening scene of Tempest. (In general I kind of hate that song. It was a good fit for the scene, though.)
Laughed: That "stupid girl" song for Lana in Magnetic. Probably the only time I've liked the musical choice for her. None of this "She Will Be Loved" and "everything she does is beautiful" crap.
Hated: Any use of Avril Lavigne and misuse of Coldplay.

To my horror, I recognised Coldplay's "The Scientist" in the background during the Clana scene in Rosetta. I was so relieved that I like Aimee Mann's live version of the song better. Otherwise, that scene would have ruined the song for me.
The cover version of "Time After Time" in Crush was lovely. And, as Cyb already pointed out, the choice of "Future Proof" for Asylum was spectacular.

Not that this is going to happen, of course...

I don't normally notice the music on the show, but my favourite has to be that absolutely lovely sequence of Clark walking in the rain during the funeral in Crush with Eva Cassidy's gorgeous cover of "Time After Time" playing. Absolutely perfect. As was Johnny Cash's "Hurt" in Shattered. And I fell in love with Dishwalla's "Devils and Angels" during the hot-ballon scene in Ryan.
I also liked Avril Lavinge's "Happy Ending" at the end of Facade. It had a nice beat that fit with the sparkling Clois chemistry, but also suitable lyrics for Chloe's look of the Angst!Of!Unrequited!Love&Jealousy. Simple Plan's "Welcome to my Life" was also a fun song I enjoyed in the Clark-Alicia making out scene in Unsafe.

Tailing on the Clark and Alicia honeymoon scene in Unsafe -Elvis' "It's Now or Never" was pretty classic too. And I have to agree with whomever also mentioned "Time After Time" at the end of Crush. That worked so well with that scene - I loved it.

Like Airisu, loved Dishwalla's "Devils and Angels." And I ended up buying Louis XIV's cd because of the song, "Finding Out True Love is Blind", played during Recruit. Don't know where, but probably during the girls-hitting-on-Clark scene. Fun, fun, raunchy song.
Wasn't too fond of the "Wonderwall" cover at the end of Velocity, which sounded much too mournful. I always wondered why they cut it off before the chorus and attributed it to Remy Zero having a monopoly on the words "save me" on this show.
Laughed so hard at "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" for Clark's suiting up scene in Jinx. It was trying so hard to be so dramatic, like those hilarious slo-mo last seconds to buzzer plays that happen in sports movies. However, I do have to admit the scene was pretty.

I actually quite like a lot of the alt-rock style stuff. It's not like the actual GOOD music you get on The OC but it's fun stuff.
The strangest episode for music has got to be the REMpisode; Slumber. Has anyone got ANY idea why they suddenly decided to use all REM songs. I mean don't get me wrong I love REM but 1, why so many songs and 2, at least make them fit the scene, flirty Clana to Everybody Hurts? Why Oh Why?

REM and Smallville are both Warner Bros property. Slumber coincided with the new REM album, so it was basically corporate synergy pimping. I still think Slumber was written around each song.

I used to like the Maroon 5 song 'She will Be loved'. that was untill that God awfull Lana Love scene. Now I cant even hear a couple of lines from that song without feeling a rageing hatred. They use that song in an commercial promoting a radio station and I now have sworn off said radio station for the forseeable future.

I don't know if "ruined" is the right word, but definitely made a somewhat annoying connection, like with the Avril song at the end of Facade. Luckily, they only do alt-crap-rock in this show, so my favorite songs are safe.

I used to at least like the first part of that Maroon5 song, with the guitars. But now even when I hear just the opening notes in my car, I imagine AlMiles sitting in the backseat shouting at me "She will be loved!" Luckily they use mostly music I don't listen to anyway, so it's not like they can ruin Avril Lavigne or the Generic WB Pimp Band for me.

What songs or band would you hate them to 'ruin' for you?
For me:
Josh Groban- if they ruin Josh for me I will not be a happy person.
Placebo- again I had this horrid dream that they pimp Clana while playing 'without you I'm nothing' In the background.
What would you hate for them to use?

There was a good season 1 Clex vid to "Without You I'm Nothing" but I don't remember who did it. But that would suck as a Clana song.
They need to stay away from any more Coldplay for Clana. If they made inappropriate use of Radiohead I might cry.

At the first season I wanted them to use Savage Garden's "Crush and Burn" (cheesy, I know, but I like it). Now I pray they won't, because it will be used to Clana-pimpage. Oh, well. As long as my filks and Bad Religion are safe from the Clana, everything's ok.

Officially ruined: Avril Lavigne's "My Happy Ending". I actually enjoyed that song, but ever since it was used at the end of Facade, I hate it. It was just too much. On the brighter side of things, I find I'm still able to enjoy Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".
I will have to kill myself if they ever use any of Aimee Mann's songs in a Lana scene. Luckily, her songs deal with addiction and dysfunction, so they aren't exactly full of Lana potential in TPTB's minds.
But there is one Aimee song I'd kill to see used with Chloe, called "How Am I Different". If Chloe were ever to get a love interest on the show, this song would be perfect for that occasion.

I'd laugh if they used Rick James "Superfreak" especially if it was a Lana scene.
"We are the Champions" by Queen will never be played but I'd smile if they ever did use it.
I can listen to the Maroon 5 song but it took a month to get over the irritation.

You're welcome,
smallvillefanatic and
SweetiepieEyed. But direct the real thanks to the vidder. I just pimp it, is all.
One of the songs they used for a Clana ending scene in S2 was Matthew Good's "Weapon." If you remember a slow, ballad-sounding song with the lyrics:
"Here by my side, an angel. Here by my side, it's heaven", that's it. TPTB used the beginning for a Clana scene, but that's misleading. The song is definitely not a love ballad and, when taken as a whole, it's actually very much a Lex song instead.
Euphony made a Lex POV
vid to it and her intro explains everything much better than I can. One of my favorites and I especially love the casting of Clark as Lionel and Lex's respective angel and devil.
Aqualung's "Strange and Beautiful" was another song used for Clana song in an earlier season. What's scary is that it's become really, really appropriate for the couple, especially after the events of "Blank." Some of the lyrics:
"I've been watching your world from afar,
I've been trying to be where you are,
And I've been secretly falling apart,
Unseen.
To me, you're strange and you're beautiful,
You'd be so perfect with me but you just can't see,
You turn every head but you don't see me.
I'll put a spell on you,
You'll fall asleep and I'll put a spell on you.
And when I wake you,
I'll be the first thing you see,
And you'll realise that you love me." It's a scary ass song, but I like it. Another weirdly used song (foreshadowing?) was Gus' cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" used when Lex proposes to Helen. The lyrics are about a man trying to persuade his lover into a double suicide and the Gus version is creepier than BOC's peppy version.
And in the end scene of "Dichotic", an A-Ha song was used for yet another Clana scene. It was probably used for the lines:
"You don't know my destiny. You can't see what I see." The funniest part of the song, considering the apathy a lot of the fans have developed for the Clana back-and-forth relationship, is the title: "I Wish I Cared."

I got my Placebo vids mixed up. The first season Clex vid I was thinking of is "Every You Every Me". "Without You I'm Nothing" is a different vid with clips from s1-3. But also very good.
Back to music. In Shattered, when Clark has to choose between his parents and following Lex, is it my imagination or was there a sweeping sort of orchestral moment there? I remember thinking it was very epic and romantic and all that good stuff. I loaned out my tape so I can't check it myself.
The funniest part of the song, considering the apathy a lot of the fans have developed for the Clana back-and-forth relationship, is the title: "I Wish I Cared."

I always thought that both Drive and Sway by Bic Runga would fit this show. Except they would be attached to LaNah and that would be bad. Very bad. Especially since Sway, in particular, is practically the Story of S1 Clex.
Drive has a certain Joey Potterish melancholy; I'm certain it's been used on other WB properties because, well, it just would be.

Chiming in on the Time After Time love. The whole sequence was beautifully shot and the music was perfect for it.
All of the opera pieces fit well, though I don't know enough about opera to name them.
Don't hate me, but I liked (and still like) Everything by Lifehouse. It reminds me of sweet season one, back when the Clana didn't annoy me.

I still think Slumber was written around each song.
If that is true then the writing is even worse than I thought it was!
sevenless - I hate to admit it but I really like Everything by Lifehouse too. I know it's pure cheese but it's good cheese!
Sway would be a perfect Clex song (and it was on DC too, that's how I heard of it).
'Stay you'll stay, don't come and go like you do. Stay you'll stay, I need to know all about you'
It's a bit too lovey for the DOMO's though so we can only wish - would make a great vid though if someone with a lot more talent than me could do it!
Back to music. In Shattered, when Clark has to choose between his parents and following Lex, is it my imagination or was there a sweeping sort of orchestral moment there?
I'm pretty sure there was. The same as in the episode when Lex comes back from the dead.
And yay for me - I ressurected the music thread! I guess we're all running out of stuff to discuss during the hiatus!

Here's the vid
Cyb was thinking of, "Every You Every Me." It's last on the page. Chlark, Clex, and Clana.
I always thought that SV should use more country music, instead of alt-rock all the time. I understand why they don't, because they're pandering toward the mainstream teen demo, but I always get a kick whenever they try to show snippets of farm life (like feeding the cows) and that includes music.
And I've never been too fond of the music that they play for Lex. I'd prefer that he listen to more electronica and trance, because of his clubbing past. And I'd always pegged him as an Enigma fan, if only for the subject matter.

MartaDolores that was "This is you Life" by Switchfoot. I love that song. It was very appropriate for Clark, Lex, and Chloe, spanned all three scenes and the
lyrics fit so well...and so icon-worthy, I wanted to make icons just for those lyrics. Another Switchfoot song they should use is "Meant to Live", kind of Clexy. This song reminds me of another song, "
The Reason" by Hoobastank...beautiful choice for that chlark-reconciliation scene at the end of Delete. Sometimes they really do pick awesome songs.

The one I'm thinking of is straight Clex. Er... I mean
all Clex. I think it's by "Carrie" but I downloaded it something like 3 years ago so I'm not 100% sure anymore.
I sort of liked their use of "My Immortal" on the show but I'd already associated it with Clex so it was a little jarring. Was it Memoria? When Clark was talking to Martha? I forget now. Anyway there was a season 1-2 Clex vid to it, which I also can't really remember.

Was it Memoria? When Clark was talking to Martha?
Yes, that was the song. (Just saw the episode in question myself. Good grief, it was spectacular.) I loved the instrumental music of Memoria.
Another Avril Lavigne song bites the dust: "I'm With You" was used during the sickening Lana "Am I perfect?" - Clark "Of course you are!" conversation in Accelerate. That was quite enough to taint the song for me. Ugh.

I liked that AVRIL song but Clana ruins so many good songs. I cant remember the DIDO song that was playing (cant remember the episode either) but they play the whole song i think, and Lana ends up trotting away on her horse.

Has Smallville ruined any songs for anyone
Thankfully I don't listen to much of what they've played on my own, but I have developed a hatred for Lifehouse. This may not be surprising except I used to really like "Hanging by a Moment." Now I just cringe when anything by Lifehouse is played and I recognize it.
I really, really liked the inclusion of one of Andrew W.K.'s songs in Red. I forget which song it is, maybe "Party Hard," but I laughed like hell when I realized what was playing in the background of the bar fight scene. Andrew W.K. just contrasts so much with the alt-rock usually played.
And I thought "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" was a little strange, like they were trying too hard to make the scene overly dramatic.
And I love "Don't Fear the Reaper," but I'd be a little creeped out if someone proposed to me to it.
And oh, Johnny Cash at the end of "Shattered"... *tear* So good.
If they did start playing the stuff I generally listen to, the show would be different and probably not for the better. ;)

I don't think I even realized that's what was playing at the end of Precipice till I came here after the episode. I was too busy laughing because Helen seemed jealous of Clark. But yeah, "Oh honey! Has Smallville ruined any songs for anyone
I usually like how they use songs, but I was severely disappointed in the use of "Let Me Go" by Three Doors Down because I predicted they'd use it at the bitter end of Clana. I have no idea how "You love me but you don't know who I am/I'm caught between this life I lead* and where I stand/So let me Go, just let me go" is supposed to be a restarting of the friendship. Especially with lyrics like "
How can this love be a good thing, when I know what I'm going through"
*I thought "caught b/t life I lead" (rescues) and "where I stand" (trivial Smallville stuff) would have been an apt close to Clana

Cyb, "Licehoufe" makes about as much sense "lifehouse" so I'm gonna go with that. :)
And I think at the end of season 2 AlMiles/writers still had their heads on somewhat straight, so the music choice may have been intentional based on the pending Helen=evil storyline. (I mean, now, I don't trust them to remember what happened in the previous episode, since they don't).
It's a cool song, but just so *weird* for the circumstances. If it wasn't intentional based on the storyline, I'd really like to know why they chose it. Even if it was intentional, Helen had no intenion of dying, so then it still doesn't make sense. Hmm.
