Glark
Talky!
Gilmel
Thanks so much for the space, Glark!

I'm now morbidly looking forward to Enterprise being PHed so all of Trek will be in one place.
Glark
See? Circle of Life.
cutecouple
Hmmmm. Shiny. Much thanks Glark.
nqllisi
Snark, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Star Trek forums...

Awesome. Simply awesome.
belsum
Yay Glark!
thingamajig
Oooh, pretty!
Elenita
A million thanks, Glark!

Can I just say--it's weird having all this space? I went to the DS9 board earlier to share something, but was so intimidated by all the possibilities that I clicked away as fast as possible. I'm not afraid of starting a new thread, but it's just figuring out what that thread will be that freaks me out.

Infinite Diversity....
Glark
Yeah, I thought for sure I'd see new threads in the show areas when I logged in today. Boooooo!
EnglishMuffin
I like our new home. It's even better than what I was anticipating. Yay!
areacode212
Hello. I was a huge DS9 fan back in the day, but I never posted in the old thread since I hadn't seen any of the episodes since they originally aired. But, it's nice to know that the show has its own forum for when I ever see the shows again. Maybe I'll head over there once I figure out how to get the DVDs for a cheap price.
Elenita
Welcome, areacode212

Lots of people have been using Netflix instead of feeding the Paramount piggy bank. Maybe that'll work for you?

Edit: And if it doesn't--come talk anyway! All of us here are a friendly bunch, and we can always fill in any details you may have forgotten.
chancellorjake
Yea Glark!

Thank You.

This is the best birthday day present I have ever received; and I am still three months away from the big 25.

So much room to spread out, relax, and talk a spell.

Wow...So Happy!
Dane
Happy upcoming, Chances.

I f'love the new forums. It's so nice and roomy here! Thanks, Glark. This is a cool thing you did for us.
areacode212
Elenita--thanks and yeah, good idea. I think I just might go that route...once I'm done with all the TV-on-DVD that I already own, heh.
Elenita
Hee, f'love. That's great. I'm going to have to work that into my personal lexicon. Thanks, Dane.

And no problem, areacode212. It's always great to welcome another Niner.
Isaboe
*Looks around, kicks the tires* Ok, this should do. Other than Enterprise at the moment I have DS9 from Netflix too. I just added the second season discs to the list. Should start getting them soon.
jazmyne
*Looks around, waves nervously*
Hi all! I'm jazmyne, and I'm married to a much bigger Star Trek fan than I ever was. I watched a few episodes back when I was a teenage girl with a crush on Wil Wheaton, which I know = Evil in some Star Trek circles, at least, according to my husband and his best friend. One of the most painful conversations of our marriage:

(We have just exited the theater, after seeing Nemesis)
Him: Did you like it?
Me: Yeah, I did. And Wesley was in it!
Him: Yeah.....
Me: Why do you hate him?
Him: He's just...it's just...
Me: Wait a second...is he the Scrappy?
Him: Yes, that's exactly it.

I'm currently watching the reruns of TNG on Spike, and now that I'm not 16 and blinded by my hormonal obsession with the shape of Wil Wheaton's mouth, I can admit that Wesley is quite a Mary Sue, and thanks to Netflix I've seen most of the movies and I'm watching the Original Series. I named my new computer Data, because you can open up the side to get into it, just like Data's head.

So, while I've never hung out in the Star Trek threads before, the big new space was too tempting to ignore, and I look forward to getting to know you all.
Dane
Awww, hi jazmyne, and welcome aboard! You're in good company; these are some of the nicest people online.

And thanks, Elenita. :)
MeerkatNotMink
Wow, all these new threads - it's so exciting!
Nur
VERY glad to see the new area!

Long time lurker here and DS9 fan. I've just been buried for days on end trying to catch up with the entire DS9 thread before poking my head in.

Course now it's like a topic buffet around here...
Elenita
Welcome to jazmyne and Nur. Great to have you here.

And yeah--I'm shocked that DS9 already has more than a page worth of topics. I know I created some of them, but still...
frenchtoast
Wow, this is so great! Thanks, Glark! All this room, all this Trek, it's a beautiful thing.

Now, if it would not snow tomorrow so the plumber can come so I can take a shower, it would be even better.
EnglishMuffin
Fingers crossed for you frenchtoast! It's snowing here at the moment, and there's more forecast this week. We're expecting about 5cm on the low ground, where I am, and that's easily enough for everything to grind to a halt. And, the last two Mondays at work we've had no heating, so I'm hoping someone's got their act together for tomorrow morning.

ETA: welcome to jazmyne and Nur!
lorien829
Look at the pretty new forum! I feel like my voice should be echoing or something. Hey, everybody!
jazmyne
Ohh, I can sympathise, frenchtoast. We had one of those "worst snow storms since 19whatever!" at the beginning of January, and I nearly went nuts with claustrophobia due to the inability to get out of my own driveway. There are still four-foot piles of snow in my yard, and we've had 40-50 degree weather for two weeks.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!
I've cleaned everything else off of my TiVo, so tomorrow will be a TNG marathon. In theory, I'll be doing other things too. In reality, probably not.
FoolishWanderer
Help! I accidentally formatted my computer's DVD drive so it only plays region 1 discs.I'm looking for a free program that'll unlock my DVD drive again. I don't want to rip stuff to the HD, burn to another DVD, anything like that. Nothing illegal. I just want to be able to watch my stuff, where and when I want. Does anyone know of a program to do this?

I've seen a couple of programs that give you a free sample of this, but they expired and I don't want to have to buy the full versions.

Thanks!
Elenita
I don't know of any programs that can do that off the top of my head, but I'll keep an eye out for you. Do you use Windows?
FoolishWanderer
Yep, XP.
Elenita
FoolishWanderer, this may not exactly what you're looking for, but I found this tidbit while wandering around Boing Boing

But what happens when you take your laptop from New York to London? You're in Region 2, but you bought your device in Region 1. Can you buy a disc in London and play it on your computer?

Yes and no. When a computer manufacturer gets a DVD-decoding license from Hollywood's licensing cartel (the DVD Copy Control Association or CCA), it is allowed to make players that can change regions up to five times.

What's more, once the region-switches have run out, computer companies can reset your counter at a service depot a further five times.

I'll keep looking out for software, but worst comes to worst--maybe you can have a service center reset the firmware for you?
cutecouple
Supposedly, VLCmedia player (from VideoLAN) can play DVD's from any region. It's kinda rough, but is definitely free and multiplatform though.
pennyq
Wouldn't it be nice if they would just pick one DVD format and stick with it? Would that really be so hard? They could save everyone the aggravation.

I got into the office today and was excited to see the voice mail light on (it almost never is) because I've been waiting to hear from someone who was supposed to get back into town over the weekend. 5 messages: 4 calls from a fax machine and one hangup. *sigh*
belsum
That made me laugh pennyq. I'm always excited when my many messages turn out to be from an errant fax machine. Because then I don't have anything to follow up on!

We're dog sitting my parents' dog again this week. If he wasn't so damn nice and cute he'd be in bigger trouble. First day with us he ate 2/3 of a brand new loaf of bread. And he keeps breaking past my laundry room barriers to eat Squirrel's food. And, um, clean the litterbox. Bad dog.
jazmyne
My parents occasionally watch my nephew while my sister is out of town, and he always brings the dog. More than once I've called my mom and when I ask how she is, she'll say "General's here." He has an uncanny ability to find the one place my mom doesn't want him to be, and to sleep there. Usually having dragged a new item of clothing over there, too. My nephew really takes the "General is your dog, so you take care of him" thing seriously, but he can't watch the dog every minute. And mom has a white couch.

I get a small thrill when I have a message, just because it makes me feel liked or important or something.
Cleo256
I hate voice mail at work. Voice mail only comes from someone who wants something, and wants it quickly. It always leads to extra work. Quick questions are asked in person. Anything not needed quickly is sent over e-mail. It's only voice mail that I dread.
EnglishMuffin
My office is too cheap to have voicemail, so I don't have that problem. We just have to take messages for each other, and if someone calls before 8.30 or after 5, well, that's just tough.
areacode212
Voice mail at work is the worst. That's why I go whole weeks without ever checking it, and get a tiny little thrill when I delete messages the moment the callers identify themselves. I'm basically training them to get in touch with me via e-mail, but some people are slower than others.
Elenita
Does anyone else wish that winter would just go away?
nelamm
Elenita, I have the bad feeling it's going to be like this straight through to March 21st.
Elenita
::sigh::

I've got to figure out a way to live in the Southern Hemisphere between say, early November and late March every year. I'm starting to get irritable every time I hear a weather report.
frenchtoast
Elenita, I have the bad feeling it's going to be like this straight through to March 21st.

Or beyond. Snow in April in NY is not of unheard of. It freaked some of my French colleagues though. Just because the calendar says it's spring doesn't necessarily mean that the weather will cooperate.

Personally, I like winter and fall. I can snuggle under warm blankets, wear cozy flannel pajamas, I used to love ice-skating and blazing fires with hot cocoa. The worst is driving in the bad weather, but I normally either plan around it or wait of a few days. It's the hot and humid days of summer I can't stand. Ugh. And even then, those downpours in thunderstorms, and for those in the Midwest, tornadoes, that's some seriously bad weather. (And heck, even for those in LA!)

What can I say, I'm weird.
Gilmel
Heh. It's been spring in Seattle for the past two weeks. Clear and sunny. We have blooming violets, daffodils, camilias, and crocuses in my neighborhood. Of course, now it's foggy and chilly weather again. And I'm cold again, even with the heat on. I don't like winter. I want warm. I'll even put up with humidity for warmth if I have to.
Elenita

I love autumn myself, and look forward to Thanksgiving like most kids look forward to Christmas. I also spend much of October daydreaming about spending winter in the kitchen--roasting things in the oven, baking bread, and making soup. But I think by late January, my patience with the cold and the weak sun and the heavy clothes just runs out--that's when I start really hating everything.
Skategrrl

Cleo, I'll see your voicemail and raise you a work cell phone.

When that rings (especially at, say, 9 PM), it's never good.

Speaking of spring...has ANYONE in the midwestern U.S. seen a robin yet? I swear to God, every day I scan my yard for 'em...
frenchtoast
When that rings (especially at, say, 9 PM), it's never good.

Hubby's work cell phone doesn't have reception in his office. When he goes outside, it does, but not inside. And it doesn't work real well in our house either. He's not too thrilled with the service, to say the least.
Cleo256
When that rings (especially at, say, 9 PM), it's never good.
I'm so glad I don't work at a job where people think it's okay to call you at 9PM without some sort of prior "on call" arrangement. Thankfully, engineers tend to be the "bang their heads against the problem futily before admitting they need help" type.

I just successfully sewed something for the first time since I was 12 years old. I sewed a button back on a shirt! Stupid shirt lost its button the first time it was washed. For those of you keeping track, this is not the "Odo" shirt I mentioned in the other thread, but the other shirt I bought at the same time.

I know, some of you can probably sew buttons with your eyes closed, but this is an accomplishment for me.
nqllisi
I hate sewing buttons, Cleo, so I give you all the credit in the world. Bravo!
frenchtoast
I was keeping track, cleo and was relieved to hear that Odo didn't disappoint.

Two things I hate about sewing: hemming and cutting out the pattern. Buttons don't bother me so much, except when I prick my finger. Stinky Butt has lost a few buttons and I haven't bothered sewing them back on. He's just going to lose them anyway, and they're on the sleeve, so it makes it easier to roll up his sleeves when he eats.
belsum
My least favorite part of sewing is zippers. I hate them with a passion. Oh, I know all the tricks and am on good terms with my zipper foot and whatnot, but I'll still put in a drawstring or button whenever possible. And I'm incredibly lazy about finishing my interior seams. I figure that since I'm the one wearing the garment, and I don't care, why should I bother?

Speaking of spring...has ANYONE in the midwestern U.S. seen a robin yet?

That's a big ol' NOPE for Minneapolis. And for the first time in my life, I'm sick and tired of winter and want it to be done. I'm blaming pregnancy hormones for this about face.
Elenita
People around here certainly are a crafty bunch! I haven't really sewn anything since I was seven, and I'm pretty sure I've forgotten what little I knew. I really should try it again sometime soon. Anyone have any tips for a girl whose only claim to domesticity is knowing how to cook?

Oh, and knit. I know how to knit. I'm just really slow at it.

Like frenchtoast said, Cleo, I'm glad Odo wasn't the one giving you trouble.
