Now that there's a premiere date and timeslot set for this show, I wanted to start a thread to talk about it.
Here's a link to the ABC MediaNet's page about "Eyes". It's got photos and a summary, which goes a little something like this...
From the executive producer of “Fastlane” and the co-creator of the much-analyzed “Profit” comes “Eyes,” the suspenseful one-hour, midseason drama series full of risks, bluffs, blackmail and intrigue. If someone steals $100 from you, call the police. If they steal $100,000, call the FBI. But if you’re the CEO of a Fortune 500 company and your chief financial officer embezzles $100 million on your watch, call Judd Risk Management. “Eyes” will premiere later this season on the ABC Television Network.
Run by sharp-witted, impulsive Harlan Judd (Tim Daly), Judd Risk Management is a discreet, high-tech firm that handles cases with the highest possible stakes, while operating at the absolute fringe of the law. Along with ruthlessly efficient Nora Gage (Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon) and a staff of brilliantly skilled, driven individuals -- some with their own agendas and secrets -- Harlan does whatever it takes to prevail in a world of unsteady alliances and uncertain loyalties.
“Eyes” stars Tim Daly (“Wings”) as Harlan Judd, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon (“NYPD Blue,” “The Jamie Foxx Show”) as Nora Gage, A.J. Langer (“My So Called Life”) as Meg Bardo, Laura Leighton (“Melrose Place”) as Leslie Town, Eric Mabius (“Resident Evil,” “The L Word”) as Jeff McCann, Rick Worthy (“Collateral Damage”) as Chris Didion and Natalie Zea (“The Shield”) as Trish Agermeyer.
Created and executive-produced by John McNamara (“Fastlane,” “Profit”), “Eyes” is a McNamara Paper Products production in association with Warner Bros. Television.
There's been positive buzz about this show, and the timeslot sounds good (except for errm, the CSI/L&O competition) being that it's Wednesdays @ 10PM following Lost and Alias (lead-ins don't get better than these). I'm looking forward to it. It sounds like something right up my alley and I heard that like Lost, Desperate Housewives & Veronica Mars (this year's breakout hits), there will be over-arching storylines pertaining to the characters' secrets.
Oh, and it's premiering April 13th.

I agree that the lead-ins are helpful in people seeing the show but I doubt it will hold up after the first initial episode.

I agree that lead-ins can only do so much, and it pretty much only helps for the first episode. However, after hearing some good buzz I think the show might have a chance, but only if it's marketed well by ABC. If they can market it as well as the marketing's been for Alias this season, and Lost and DH, then this show might have a chance. I like the premise of the show and have to admit that hearing Kristin from EOnline refer to it as "Male-ias" definitely helped sway me into checking the show out. I'm that easily persuasded apparently.

I've never seen Profit, but anyone associated with a good show gives me some good hope that Eyes will be good. Eyes is featured in Zap2It.com's Midseason Preview:
Eyes
Premieres: Wednesday, April 13
Airs: Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET
Premise: The investigators at Judd Risk Management are not your typical private eyes. The tech-savvy group is the place high-powered clients turn when they need their affairs handled without the bothersome scrutiny of law enforcement. Complicating things is the fact that most of the employees have secrets of their own to keep.
Our Prophecy: The scheduling of moving "Alias" to Wednesday nights to team with "Lost" has worked out nicely for ABC, as the former series is enjoying some of the best ratings in its history. "Eyes," though a little lighter in tone than the other two shows, looks like a good fit for the night. A familiar cast that includes Tim Daly, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon and Laura Leighton should help too. The biggest pitfall is staunch competition from NBC's "Law & Order" and CBS's "CSI: NY."
I'm just hoping that ABC will promote it well, the way it did with Alias, Lost and Desperate Housewives this season. I haven't read any negative reviews so far, so given some good marketing, this show just may have a chance at survival.

I'm glad the premiere's been moved up - this leaves only 5 more weeks until the premiere. ABC's also put up the official website for the show as well, except there's not too much on it at the moment... anyway,
here it is.

Eyes also features Mark Famiglietti, one of the stars of my all-time favorite show,
Young Americans (don't laugh). He's listed as a guest star but is in almost every episode. There's an epsiode guide up at
TV Tome but it doesn't have any descriptions yet.
I've seen the pilot, and it's fantastic -- very smart and funny, and like DH and so many of this year's good newbies, it's unlike anything else on television. What's weird (and not good for the future of the show) is how much it reminds me of last year's
The D.A.: Former star of
Wings (Steven Weber) leads pack of pretties to untangle legal quandries, with much intrigue and back-stabbing.
The D.A. also premiered in March, also on ABC, but it wasn't given much of a chance, or much promotion, and was gone after four episodes. Let's hope
Eyes gets better treatment.

Glad to hear something good from someone who's seen the pilot. I'm really looking forward to it. The only thing I'm worried about right now is the lack of marketing. I've seen commercials for Blind Justice and Jake In Progress on ABC in the past 2 weeks, but nothing for Eyes. I hope ABC knows what it's doing... 'cause good promotion does wonders, as has been proved this season with Alias, Lost and Desperate Housewives. Granted, Blind Justice is premiering this week and JIP in 2 weeks, so they might just be pacing the marketing.

Yeah, me too. I don't know how many of us are out there, but I often feel like one of the few people who don't watch L&O or CSI or any of their spinoffs. I just hope the competition doesn't kill this show before it gets its chance to build an audience.

I don't watch any procedural shows. The only one I can stand at all is Without a Trace, because it does have some character stuff and isn't just about the body-of-the-week.
But I think the L&O/CSI competition may not be that bad. Neither show gets more than an 11 or 12 share in the 18-49 demo, so it's not like being up against the scary 26-share CSI of Thursdays. I think there's room for Eyes, but I am concerned by the lack of promos.

I've been waiting for this show to air since its announcement as a midseason from ABC last May. Great to see good reviews because if I have to be indulged in Tim Daly's work (I watched the sucky remake of The Fugitive and that wretched movie 'Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde), it might as well as be in a more pleasant environment.
politikgirl
Feb 28, 2005 @ 12:43 am
I really do hope that's the case with the L&O/CSI competition. Hopefully those who don't enjoy the 2 franchises will check this out. I'm increasingly hopeful about the quality of the show from the things I've heard about it.
Of all the ABC midseason shows, Eyes is by far the most promising.
I actually saw a clip online a few weeks ago, from the pilot, but I don't remember where the link was. The clip was short, but it seemed OK.

I never heard of this show until today when I saw it mentioned in the Grey's Anatomy thread, but it does sound interesting. I agree that it is a bit weird that ABC isn't marketing it yet. I have to say though, I get a little worried when I read "From the executive producer of Fastlane". I only watched that show a few times and I wasn't impressed. Hopefully, Eyes won't be all style and no substance because it would be nice to have three great ABC shows to watch on Wednesday nights.

I get a little worried when I read "From the executive producer of Fastlane".
Try to focus on "From the executive producer of
Profit," which was a much smarter show; although, I was reading the
Johnny Zero thread and was surprised how many people tuned in hoping it would be like
Fastlane but then didn't like JZ because it wasn't as smart and didn't have
Fastlane's "self-aware sense of humor" -- who knew?
Fastlane was created by John McNamara and McG; McNamara (
Profit) brought the smarts and McG (
Charlie's Angels movies) brought the flashy-flash. But
Eyes is just McNamara, and I think that's what makes it so grown-up and twisty and cool.

Feb 28, 2005 @ 7:31 pm
Thanks for the info depudor. I never got around to watching Profit, so I'll have to take your word for it. I actually like McG's stupid Charlie's Angels movies and his dumb music videos, but I am not really interested in seeing his style week after week on a TV show. Good to know that McNamara isn't as flashy, so it gives me more hope as to the quality of Eyes.

I'd like to see a good balance between style and substance, much like seasons 1 and 2 of Alias. There have been way too many "all style, no substance" kind of shows over the years that haven't lasted (Fastlane being a great example of this) so hopefully Eyes has that balance. I have heard increasingly more and more good things about this show though, so prospects are looking good in terms of the quality of the show.

By the way, they aired an 'Eyes' promo during Alias last Wednesday. It was extremely short though, and didn't give the viewer any idea of what the show was about. Plus, I thought the promo looked cheesy. ABC's done a better job with the promos for its other midseason shows, which bothers me, but I still want to see this show.

I'll try to watch since it has yummy Eric Mabius in it. "Lawn Dogs" was one of my favorite movies.

Eric Mabius was in Cruel Intentions? Wow, I've seen that movie five times and I didn't remember him. I know he was in the classic Welcome to the Dollhouse, of the year indie movies took over Hollywood. And, of course, I know his ass as the one bone they threw to the straight women watching The L Word.
politikgirl, I also finally saw an Eyes promo, and you're right -- it was awful. It made the show seem kind of goofy or glitzy, like Snoops, which isn't at all what it is. It's much more grown up and dramatic than what they showed, but maybe ABC laid all their "drama" on Blind Justice, and they just want to position Eyes as a fun show.
AresCupid
Mar 7, 2005 @ 1:54 am
The show's meant to be quirky, but I think other ABC-shows are more fluff than this one. It's going up against two powerful trite franchises. And while I'm sure ABC would put their weight behind it if it becomes another hit, they doubtless feel it's not worth "risking" a marketing-blitz that would call attention to the show's ENRON-skewering premise and its willful gay character when the show hasn't yet invited public-loyalty. Without some horny housewives, an island, bachelor + bimbos, or underdog-homes/handicaps to exploit, marketing would just be too political.
Gosh thanks, "liberal"-media!
politikgirl
Mar 7, 2005 @ 11:11 am
I've read that it's supposed to be quirky and a bit fun, but I've also heard that there's a more suspenseful/intrigue kind of side to it and I just don't like ABC's marketing so far, which only shows that "fun" side. I hate to make everything about Alias because it's not, but Alias's first season was both fun and serious but the show was never portrayed, at least not in its first season, to be just one or the other. And even when they advertise its "fun" side, it never comes across quite as cheesy as the promo for Eyes did. I'm just disappointed that they seem to have put some thought into the promos for Blind Justice, Grey's Anatomy and even Jake In Progress but seemingly just slapped the Eyes promo together. Especially considering the midseason previews I've read have rated Eyes very well, and sometimes even ahead of the pack. So hopefully ABC has more to show us re: the marketing of this show than they've shown us so far.

I staked out ABC for the last few nights waiting for the promo and I finally saw it after Super Nanny last night. It was certainly diffrent then i was expecting, I thought it would have this whole Profit vibe, but this still looks like the coolest show this year. I can't wait to see it.

I've heard elsewhere that there are 2 different "Eyes" promos so far. I've only seen one... it was very short, didn't show the full cast, and pretty much just mentioned "Harlan Judd and his group of detectives" or something along those lines, and then ended with "Tim Daly stars in Eyes". I don't remember what was in it word-for-word though.

It's funny that they're promoting Tim Daly, like he's such a big star. I watched
Wings, but til the very end I still thought of him as Tyne Daly's brother.
TV Guide for March 6-12 has a "Spring Preview" and had this to say about
Eyes:
Harlan Judd and his namesake private-eyes firm promise more espionage and well-dressed sleuthing types that their lead-in, Alias. Cool, stylish and smart -- imagine Danny Ocean as a detective.
Maybe that explains the weird colored circles flying around the promo I saw -- they're reminiscent of promos for
Ocean's 11.

To be honest, I don't know Tim Daly from anything. I guess they're trying to use his name to headline the show because he's essentially the biggest name on a show with a lot of relative unknowns.
Yeah, the weird circles caught my eye too, and now that you mention it, there were circles for promos of both Ocean's Eleven and Twelve.
I've been hearing quite a few of these Alias comparisons in terms of the style of the show. Should be cool. I'm getting more and more excited.

I have been a drooling fangirl of Tim Daly's since I saw him play Valerie Bertinelli's blind brother in I'll Take Manhattan. And now I've seriously dated myself.
Anyway, I'm thrilled that Tim is returning to series television and I hope that Eyes is a big hit. The premise of the show is intriguing and the cast is full of actors I like (it's good to see Laura Leighton again!) Lots of TV critics have raved about the show's pilot which is a positive sign.
So, if they've filmed 8 eps of Eyes, I guess that ABC will be running all of them straight through until the end of sweeps in May?

The order was 13 episodes (pilot + 12), all of which have already been shot. They are airing out of order, and I've heard a rumor that a couple episodes might not air at all, which may be why you heard 8,
politikgirl, although I'd be really surprised if they didn't air at least ten. Production has already wrapped, so there won't be anymore episodes shot for this season. If the show debuts and does well, they'll probably start up production again in the summer, but the second season may end up also being a midseason, like
Alias.

I wish I had seen it because I have only seen the shorter ones and to be honest, they're not selling me on this show. Word to whomever upthread compared this to

One
Eyes review I read described it as "a little bit dark.” I hope that's true because the promos I've seen are making the show out to be light in tone and almost comedic. I know the show is getting good reviews, but I take critics' reviews with a grain of salt because sometimes they don't know what they're talking about. Hopefully, that's not the case with this show. I guess I have to reserve total judgement until after I actually watch it.

I've seen the pilot, and there's some definite darkness to it. It would suck if the episodes air out of order, because the continuing story arc prospects that get set up look awfully promising and I'd hate to see them get broken to pieces. Of course, you should take what I say with a grain of salt because I'm a professional television critic, so sometimes I don't know what I'm talking about.

Heh. Didn't mean to offend. To be honest though, time and again, I have read reviews that tout a show as the best thing since sliced bread, but it turns out, in my opinion, that the show isn't any good. When I found out A.J. Langer (from My So-Called Life) is in the cast, I downloaded the Eyes pilot awhile back... even though it didn't really sound like my type of show. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Despite the fact that A.J. wasn't in it much and seems to have the thankless role of the "plain" sidekick who'll possibly develop feelings for the hero but he'll never notice 'cause he's surrounded by "hot" chicks. But that's not really what the show's *about* so I can ignore it. Anyway the pilot had some cool plot twists and a killer ending.

I finally saw the new promo for this show. It's a lot longer than those short promo spots that were airing a few weeks back, and it went into more detail about what the show was about, and showed a lot more scenes from what I presume to be the pilot. I still think the tone of the promo was a little too light (especially because I've heard that the show's darker than it seems) but this promo was much better and definitely piqued my interest. My sister, who was watching Alias with me when this promo aired, definitely seemed interested in the show after seeing the promo, and hopefully other viewers were drawn in by the promo as well. Airing it during Alias was a good idea, because the whole costumes/wigs/undercover spying stuff from the promo definitely would appeal to most Alias fans.
