As Strega suggested in the Laura thread, here's the theard for talking about the actors in other roles so as to avoid overlapping conversations.

Strega, I'm not good with the coming up with titles for theards so I thought direct was best.

I saw Mary in the ER ep where she plays Carter's mom. And man, she is different in that role. There was something about her performance that was off for me. I don't know what. I'm going with the drivel that passes for writing on ER. I love her here though.

The one that I remember the most is EJO's role at Lt. Martin Castillo on Miami Vice. He had such a serious side to him plus times where he was just so monotonous you couldn't tell if he was happy or sad.

The one that I remember most vividly is one where the department lost the cryogenically frozen body of a reggae singer they had in custody and he just walks out of the station while telling everybody the guy's wife is suing the city and that if anybody needs him he'll be at the bar or something. The way he just said it in such a deadpan fashion made me laugh.
Wildog27
McDonnell was also Stands with a Fist in Dances with Wolves and the First Lady in Independence Day and Robert Redford's love interest in Sneakers.

Edward James Olmos was also the AP Calculus teacher in Stand and Deliver.

My mind is filled with such useless information.
Curare
I'm just glad EJO isn't playing Adama the way he played the father on that PBS show.
TanTan
McDonell is also Donnie Darko's mum. This is the previous role for which I best know her--I thought she was pretty amazing in it. Hasn't she been nominated for oscars a couple times?

Starbuck was in Halloween Resurrection. I own the movie (I'm not sure why, strange loyalty to that franchise), but I don't actually remember her in it, I've re-read that she's in it.

Youngish EJO was also Gaff in Blade Runner, the skinny cop who left Origami wherever he went and seemed to know all of Deckard's secrets.

Was he nom'd for an oscar for Stand and Deliver? That role really got him a lot of attention. Coming from a family of teachers, many tears were shed at home over that flick.
cutecouple
EJO did indeed garner an Oscar nomination for Stand and Deliver. Well earned too. Didn't he have some other role that ended up with him having bodyguards for a spell?
Strega
Curare, heh, direct is good. I'll just put it in initial caps so it looks pretty. Thanks for starting this!
Curare
Glad to be of service.

I've never seen Dances With Wolves. The only Costner film I liked was The Bodyguard for reasons passing understanding. So is she playing a Native American or a non-Native American who has been adopted by the tribe the movie deals with? All I know about that movie is that Costner got the Oscar for it and that scene they always show with him and his mustache riding some horse with outstreched arms.
Jolie Blanc
I'm sure someone will get to this eventually, but Jamie Bamber is best known (prior to BG) for playing Ensign Archie Kennedy in the Horatio Hornblower films. He's got a fairly strong screaming-girly fanbase from that. And an entire bastion of slash fiction, all based on his cuteness. (Well, that Welsh guy might also have been involved...A little.) ;)

Edited to add: And watching a 2nd season episode of 'The West Wing', I spotted Leisure Suit Larry the Cylon (Matthew Bennett) as a congressional member/aide who was completely incapable of ordering lunch -- risotto made with chicken broth rather than oil named Fox or Fowler. Whee. (Can't find the episode name at the moment -- it was the 3rd Ainsley Hayes episode)
Jane
Curare, Mary played a white woman who was adopted as a child by the tribe after some other tribe slaughtered her family.

Did anyone catch that SAS soap Jamie Bamber used to be in, Ultimate Force? I've sat through a lot of crap for actors I like. Anyone got a heads up for me?
beakermuppet
Yep, I too have seen Ultimate Force. Am still damaged.
Incidentally, JB will be on stage from February 4th at the Liverpool Playhouse in a production of Dr Faustus
Nuallain
And, of course, Jamie "Baltar" Callum was Tom in Bridget Jones's Diary and the sequel (the gay best friend who runs around telling everyone "Fight! Fight! It's a real life fight!" during the, er, fight scene.)
laurabeth
For the topic thread title I suggest the hilarious name for Madam President that Cap'n Fotblossom suggested on the Laura thread. Stands With Dry Erase Marker

Good name for thread? Or does anyone have something better?

Youngish EJO was also Gaff in Blade Runner, the skinny cop who left Origami wherever he went and seemed to know all of Deckard's secrets.

Really?! Woah. Wouldn't have guessed that in a million years.
Strega
If I'd planned on changing the title, I would have done so.

James Callis first caught my eye playing Menelaus in the pitiful USA Network Helen of Troy miniseries. He was far and away so much better than everyone else in that production (even playing a thanklessly revisionist son of Atreus) that I searched for him in other roles. My googling of Callis is what led me to discover that the Galactica mini was in production.

Edited because proper spelling is a good thing.
Curare
Was Ulltimate Force like that MI:5 show? Sadly, I don't get BBC America so I've missed a lot of cool British stuff. But I take it Ultimate Force wasn't that great? So are Bamber and Callis recognizable actors to people with a lot of exposure to British/UK TV culture? I thought this was their first TV gig.
thingamajig
the gay best friend who runs around telling everyone "Fight! Fight! It's a real life fight!" during the, er, fight scene.

Ha, I love the fight scene anyway, but his pure, childish glee at the prospect of a fight cracks me up completely.

James Callis first caught my eye playing Menelaus

Oh, that's right! Yeah, he was pretty much the only good thing about that production. Blech (not him, the miniseries).
dr. cha
EJO also had a great role in TWW. I think it was the first season where he played a Supreme Court nominee for at least two episodes.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't Katee Sackhoff in the American Express commerical with the parasailing woman on vacation?
beakermuppet

Ultimate Force is on the ITV network over here so it'll never make it onto BBC America. It was a series originally conceived by an ex SAS soldier called Chris Ryan. Jamie Bamber played the mildly useless Lt Dotsy Doheny who fell on his sword (figuratively) after a mission went wrong. Not that I watched the series or anything of course.

I’m just glad that he doesn’t have the horrible comb-over that he had in “Stand and Deliver”

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Grace Park yet. She was Shannon in Edgemont, where she garnered some attention for her character coming out. I believe she actually fell in love with the character played by Kristin Kreuk, who’s now Lana on Smallville. So there you go.

Oh yeah, I knew I recognized him from somewwhere! Man, that movie sucked -- he and Rufus Sewell were the only good things about it.
InigoMontoya
The first time James Callis really caught my eye was in a BBC series called "Sex, Chips & Rock'n'Roll". It was set in the early 60s in a northern town and was about the adventures of a 'good' girl and her naughty non-identical twin. JC played Wolf, the cool, quiet, dependable band member of the local struggling band who offered to wed the heroine to save her from a bad alternative. He wasn't the male lead but I recall paying far more attention to him than anyone else. Well worth seeing.

Yeah, I was gonna mention that, if for no other reason than the image of GP and KK hooking up is pretty damn awesome (to me, anyway). GP has also been in an episode or two of Stargate, as one of the SG1-in-training types.

And yeah, EJO will always be Gaff to me. But that's because Blade Runner rocked my world and still needs to be seen at least once every other month.

Edited to add, Callum Keith Rennie or Leoben, the Cylon that Adama beat up at the end of the miniseries was in another one of my favorite movies, Last Night a film about the end of the world (or at least of Canada).

Sooo... was that one of those TV situations where there's endless talking about being a lesbian without any actual lesbianage? Or were there Boomer-Lana kisses and ... *koff* ... screencaps thereof?
Jane
I recently spotted Tricia Helfer in an old CSI episode (possibly season 2 finale). She played a doomed model.

beakermuppet, thanks for the Liverpool news.
beakermuppet
That's all right. Apparently, Jamie Bamber will be playing Mephistopholes (sp?) who Dr Faustus sells his soul to. Wonder if he sells it for a doughnut? :)
hanov3r

MMmmmmm... forbidden donut *drooooool*

"But I'm so TASTY!"

Grace Park was Diane's lab assistant Fran on Jake 2.0 last year, tho only 2 of her 4 eps aired in the US.

Callum Keith Rennie (Adama's punching bag Cylon) was Billy Talent in Hard Core Logo and Ray number two on Due South, and has appeared in just about every Tv series ever shot in Canada.

Petty Officer Dualla was also a guest star on Jake 2.0, and Tyrol and the Master at Arms both appeared on Smallville--as Deputy Bertigo (Crush) and Lt. Maggie Sawyer (recurring), respectively.

Katee Sackoff was also in one of the final eps of Boomtown, as a Virginia Madsen's roommate..
IanStark
I finally figured it out.

Crashdown (Boomer's NEW co-pilot) was in an episode of Cold Case where a swim coach at a boy's military reform school abused the kids as well as an episode of NCIS that I can't recall specifics on.

He was really good in the Cold Case episode as adult who had been abused as a child.
Cantab
Dualla also had a recurring role on Jeremiah as Kurdy's love interest (at least in the few episodes I caught). What I didn't realize is that Tricia Helfer had a guest spot in the first episode as well.
Metaluna
You know, the only reason I initially watched the miniseries was because I recognised so many Canadian actors from crappy Canadian TV shows that I love to watch.

For instance, Matthew Bennett (leisure suit cylon), has been a main character on Cold Squad (Canadian crime TV show) since 2000, although his character is vaguely creepy and off-putting. In addition to having been on "Due South," I clearly remember him from an episode of "Seven Days" that repeated not too long ago. Actually, now that I think about it, the actor basically plays creepy and off-putting (and often wormy) in all his roles.

Also, Kandyse McClure (Petty Officer 2nd Dualla) was on this terrible show about out of control kids living at some mountain school/resort, run by that guy from "Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman" called "Higher Ground," and it co-starred Hayden Christensen. It was all angsty and melodramatic, and I loved it. Plus, she is/was (?) a recurring character on "Da Vinci's Inquest," and has guest starred on "Dark Angel," "Andromeda," and was in this really, really, really bad Carrie TV movie remake that I watched twice.

Finally, Michael Hogan (Col. Saul Tigh) was a regular on the first two seasons of Cold Squad, where he quickly became my favourite character. I really lost interest when they wrote him off, and I was thrilled when I saw him in this (although, in all honesty, I only realised it was him during my second viewing of the miniseries -- I think he's lost some weight or something). Anyway, he's also guest-starred on such '80s/early '90s Canadian classics as "E.N.G," "Due South," "Street Legal," "The Littlest Hobo," "Road to Avonlea," and "Counterstrike." Now that's one kickass CV.

Unfortunately for the rest of the world, those images exist only in my diseased mind.

Oh my God. They showed that in Ireland too. It was god awful. It was all "so you're dad's been sexually abusing you, eh? Maybe a spot of river rafting will help you get over it!"

Sweet baby Gaeta aka Alessandro Juliani had a recurring role on Dark Angel as one of the messengers. He was in at least one ep of Jeremiah. He is also the voice of Gambit in X-Men: Evolution. In fact, per the imdb, he does a lot of voice work. Makes sense since he's a classically-trained singer. But I'm glad we're getting to see him rather than just hear him on BG. He does bring the pretty.
beakermuppet
Just saw Jamie Bamber in Scarlet Pimpernel. It was made in 1999 and I swear he looks all of 12. He has done an awful lot of work to get those arms.
Curare

And thank God, right? :-) Did you like this version of Scarlet Pimpernel?
mar-g-wan
LOL! Scarlet Pimpernel, I have that on video, bought purely to see Jamie Bamber as I loved him as Archie Kennedy on Hornblower. I thought he looked about ten myself. ;) He was adorable.

Starbuck was in Halloween Resurrection. I own the movie (I'm not sure why, strange loyalty to that franchise), but I don't actually remember her in it, I've re-read that she's in it.

KS played Jen Danzig. She was the media whore who wanted to use the stay in Michael Myers' house to become famous. MM sliced her head clean off, with a kitchen knife, at the top of the stairs. Then the cameras showed her head bouncing down the stairs. Her character totally had it coming though, so it was quite enjoyable. The rest of the movie is a total load because it ignores continuity, so I choose to ignore it.

eta: I'm a Channel Surfer now. YES!!

Loved him in it, very sweet.

If anyone would like to hear Jamie Bamber reading the book of the week for this week here he is....

I was just watching my DVD of Band of Brothers and who do I see, none other than Jamie Bamber. He doesn't have a large roll, but he looks hot. He plays Lt. Jack Foley and he has a couple of action scenes where he is running around, yelling, dodging bullets and bombs. I thought he looked grim on BSG, but I think he was even more grim in BoB.

Thanks for the link. I thought he did a good job. I love hearing his "real" voice. His voice goes up when he's doing an American accent.

I haven't seen anyone mention this film yet, so I will put a plug in for my favourite Mary McDonnell role, in John Sayles' Passion Fish. An excellent, low key film where Mary plays a soap opera actor who goes home to rural Louisiana to rehabilitate from a serious injury. Alfre Woodard plays her nurse, and the wonderful David Strathairn plays the local who catches Mary's eye. Great zydeco soundtrack, great acting, and typically humane Sayles film.

Thanks beakermuppet
That was awesome. Especially JB's impersonation of Winston Churchill. Not spot on, but still very entertaining.

I'm watching the beginning of Romeo Must Die and there's the requisite sleazy gang fight in a bar, but before that there was Grace Park doing a sleazy dance in said bar. She was credited only as "Asian Dancer," but she should have been "Asian Dancer Who Gave The Other Asian Dancer A Little Tongue. And Some Fondling." Hah!

I'm surprised no one mentioned that Starbuck played Mr. Holland's Daughter on the ill-fated 2001-02 series The Education Of Max Bickford. Bonus: She sang too! (Her character Nell Bickford pursued a musical career on the side from her college studies).

As I recall, this show had much potential, but the execution definitely left plenty to be desired (for example Max Bickford was for me way too pompous an ass to be a show's center). The show never knew what direction to take (it had a writing/production switcheroo midway through its lone season)---it was a moody issue-oriented drama one episode, feel-good family drama the next. Also, characters suddenly changed (Kara/Nell became less sullen in midseason) or were dropped entirely (Helen Shaver's Erica, Max's transgendered friend/faculty partner).

At least TPTB gave Kara/Nell a good romantic relationship in the final episode, so she went out of there (hopefully) a winner......

The judge EJO played on The West Wing was 'Judge Mendoza' a nominee for Associate Supreme Court Justice. If I remember correctly he appeared in two episodes, "The Short List" and "Celestial Navigation."

Much thanks, beakermuppet. Alas, the next story will start replacing his starting early Monday morning U.S. time, so if you haven't heard him better listen quick.

Fortunately for us, he has also read two vampire tales for BBC Radio. One in an American accent, one in his native accent.
Endi
One in an American accent, one in his native accent.

My thanks as well; he does a great job with the Colville readings! I love people who read well. Cutecouple, any idea why one story is in an American accent?
mar-g-wan
I'm pretty sure the American accent one is "This is Now".
Endi
So I guess the accent is American to fit the "extreme" American slang of the story? (Story kinda sucked). Interesting that his voice was lower and more growly doing the accent for that than it is in BSG.

On to another actor sighting: for inexplicable reasons, I adore the immense suckitude that is PAX original programming. And watching Young Blades tonight (their version of the Three Musketeers), I'm pretty sure that's Zak playing D'Artagnan. Heeee. Lord, is this show awesomely bad. I can't decide if the actor is terrible, or he can't help himself with the script he's been given. Some of you might be happy to know that he sports a hairy chest in this, too.
