I've started a piece called
Janus the Fickle.
Official Description: Painted into a corner, Agent Veronica Mars must return to Neptune, California after a long absence. A charade in tow, she will have to unravel a new mystery and contend with the reentry of Duncan Kane into her life. Futurefic.
I know this is a primarily L/V board, but I'd love to hear your responses on this. The L/V will be addressed in the course of the story, but Duncan will be paired with Veronica because - mostly - I think the guy needs to get some play. :D Plus, I really want to see that rich-kid-who's-not-overcome-by-it side of him that Teddy Dunn referred to in his interview with Mars Investigations.

Thank you both ramwitz and Triteia. I do plan to keep writing. I have a couple of different story ideas bouncing around in my head. I'm thinking I might want to write something a little lighter next time, but we'll see.
Rant, I posted a review of your story Janus the Fickle on fanfiction.net, but I thought I'd just mention here also that I think it's quite good so far.
RedFlora, the idea of a challenge ficathon sounds interesting, but what did you have in mind specifically? I ask because while I'm pretty sure I understand what a challenge ficathon entails, I am still a little new at the fanfic game myself.

I'd be up for a challenge - I've been feeling all writer's blocky lately. An assignment would be good for me.
Edit: Dude, Rant, that was amazing. I can't wait to read more. Be sure to let us know when you update.

peregrine I loved en garde. Very refreshing take on season one aftermath. I'm most impressed by a dark yet funny and unbowed Logan Echolls. I know you said in comments that it was a one off, but I'd love to read more of that universe.

I'd be willing to do a challenge.
ethereal65
Jul 6, 2005 @ 10:19 am
Yes, but what could the challenge be? LiveJournal has the pool smutathon (and oh how I'm enjoying it).
Most of the stuff out there is L/V (and I'm certainly not complaining), maybe D/V? Hmmm...
Okay, how about this:
Duncan/Veronica - Alternate Universe
Setting: Post Graduate
It doesn't have to have romantic overtones, but they have to be the main characters.
Anyone up for that challenge? Say July 13th for the deadline? That gives writers a week to write and beta.
If you want somewhere to post it send me an email at
fanfic@veronica-mars-investigates.com and I'll put it up on my site.

To clarify (and make sure I've got it), a challenge works like this:
Anyone interested in posting submits their name to the moderator. The challenge can either be simple topic, pairing, timeline, etc... or the challenge can involve a theme, with details assigned to each other by the interested writers. I've got some ideas germinating for the second - I'll toss them out in a week or so after we have to chance to try ethereal's D/V post-grad challenge.
I'm feeling sparkier already...
(Anything I missed that is generally included in fic challenges and -athons?)
Rant, I'm thoroughly intrigued - Janus is great stuff! Please do keep us updated!

This sounds interesting, but I have a question. When you say the D/V post-grad fic should be AU, does that mean that whatever future events one writes about have to be predicated on something having been different back in the present, that is, during or before season 1?
ethereal65
Jul 6, 2005 @ 11:48 am
RichardAK, when I say AU (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) I mean that one thing from the past is different than what it truly is in the story. Lilly is alive, Keith isn't Veronica's father. Lianne never existed. Along those lines.
honeybunnylittleb
Jul 6, 2005 @ 12:01 pm
Hey, I've got an idea for a challenge.
Completely AU
Their personalities are the same but their situations are completely different.
For example:
Veronica falls through a rip in the space-time continuum and wakes up in an alternative Neptune and she's the only one with knowledge of it. Kane Software's streaming video never took off as one of their competitors beat them to it and the company goes under with Jake Kane being accused of doing a Ken Lay with the company funds. He divorced Celeste and married Lianne so that Duncan, Lilly and Veronica are step-siblings. Aaron's acting career never really took off so he bought a small used car dealership and Logan has to work there 6 nights a week. Madison and Mac were switched back. Weevil, ahem, I mean Eli Navarro is Class President and Felix Toombs is his VP. Wallace is the leader of the PCH biker gang. Keith is Mayor and Veronica is the most popular girl in school. VP Clemmons is the father of Miss Dent's baby. Meanwhile, Veronica's alter-ego is in regular Neptune and in for the shock of her life.
Any takers?

honeybunnylittleb, that does sound amazing, but I don't think I can do it. I just can't separate in my head the characters' personalities from their situations and experiences. I did really like ethereal65's suggestion, in part because I had already been thinking about something along those lines,

Triteia, thanks for recommending that story Crossing the Bridge. I don't know if jacedesbff reads this board, but I'll just say that I really like the story so far.
No, but I do, and I'll pass it along to her :)

So, the D/V post-grad AU challege.
Are we signing up?
Are we just posting the fics somewhere by July 13 and linking to them here?
Also, squee! Great idea and I can't wait to see what everyone writes.
RedFlora
Jul 6, 2005 @ 5:17 pm
Okay, rosiecat, it's been sent! (It's not like I was going to get any actual work done at work today, anyway. Heh.)
It looks to me like the D/V post-grad AU is an open invite - post and link away. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
Scribble away, folks!

Jul 6, 2005 @ 5:54 pm
I was just thinking that we post the links to the fic here. I mentioned I have web space if anyone needs somewhere to post. Are we going to do winners? Mods? I am of no opinion either way and I have two days stuck in the woods with no internet to write so it will definitely give me some time to write.

RedFlora, got your message and you rock. I've got my work cut out for me. I've officially left my corner and am now dancing about, patting myself on the back. I am a little worried though - about the economy - is anyone whose at work actually, uh, working?

We should so have awards. Awards are fun.
Crackopuff
Jul 6, 2005 @ 6:31 pm
I second the motion for awards. The are most definitely of the fun.
I have one written but I'm not sure it really fits the challenge, so I may have to write another one. This is what happens when obsession meets copious amounts of free time.
RedFlora, do you feel up to more betaing?
ethereal65
Jul 6, 2005 @ 6:49 pm
Awards it is. And how will judging be determined? Vote on the boards, vote on a site?
My site welcomes all so if you want me to put together some sort of poll I'll be happy to.
sadie kate
Jul 6, 2005 @ 6:50 pm
I like awards.
I could just set up a livejournal community so everyone can post their own stuff, if it would be a lot of work for you to put it on your webspace, ethereal. The downside to that, is that anyone who posted a fic would need to have an lj account, although they are free, and pretty easy to set up. That way, all the fics and comments are in one place, and we can have our comments section over there as well, so that we don't take up too much space on the TWoP board with comments for our challenge fics.
I'm fine with whatever the consensus is, but I wouldn't mind setting that up this evening if people are interested.
ethereal65
Jul 6, 2005 @ 6:54 pm
Rock on with your bad self, sadie. What's going to happen with judging, though?
Crackopuff
Jul 6, 2005 @ 6:58 pm
Great idea sadie kate.
Maybe some people who arn't writing for the challenge could volunteer to be judges?
Triteia
Jul 6, 2005 @ 7:23 pm
If you're taking volunteers for judging count me in.
Since we are on the topic of fanfic challenges I wanted to point out the
Summer AU Contest that
You Think You Know Somebody is currently hosting. Aside from having a winner in each of the seven categories, there are going to be awards for best angst, smut, etc...
sadie kate
Jul 6, 2005 @ 7:24 pm
That sounds like a great idea. We could also do like the loveathons people, and have polls for voting, so there can be reader's choice and judge's choice for fics in different categories.
I looked into it, and there are a few options on how to do the polls. Only paid users or paid communities can feature polls so we could:
a) make it be a paid community - I'd pay 5 bucks for the first two months, and then if it's working out and people are posting fics and enjoying the contest, someone else could pony up for the next few months, and so on, rather than trying to coordinate people mailing dollar bills to chip in or anything, or
b) if anyone here already is a paid lj user, they can just post the poll in the community, and then we don't have to deal with the whole paid community issue
I'll go ahead and set it up as a free account now, because we can always switch it to pay later. I'll post a link when it's set up, and we can have an introductory post over there where we can discuss nitpicky details in the comment section, such as - time limits, contest categories, and whether or not we want to open the contest to other TWoPpers. So, give that stuff some thought, and we'll start addressing it over there, so we don't have to keep using this thread for planning.
RichardAK
Jul 6, 2005 @ 8:07 pm
Well, sadie kate, I went ahead and got a livejournal account in anticipation of this contest. I'm also now thinking about cross-posting what I've already written to livejournal, although I don't know whether or not that sort of thing is frowned upon.
Also, if it's only five dollars for two months, I could take the second two months, if that's the way we decide to go.

I'm also now thinking about cross-posting what I've already written to livejournal, although I don't know whether or not that sort of thing is frowned upon.
Go ahead, it's not.
And
sadie kate, I'm probably not going to participate, but I do have a paid account. So if no one else does I can certainly put up polls for you.

Jul 6, 2005 @ 9:24 pm
Okey dokey! I have a sample community set up. It won't be the permanent one - we'll think up a snazzy name, and I'll do a better design, but I've put up entries on several issues that we can discuss so we figure out what direction we want to take these challenges in.
Also, anyone interested in moderating, drop me an email.

I have been lurking for a while. You guys have your challenge plans made, but I did want to past a link for a weekly challenge/exercise that I have been trying to organize on the LoVe is in the Air board. The link is
here. It would be great to have more people if anyone is interested. Or, any suggestions would also be appreciated to get more interest.
Also, I posted a WeeVer story I wrote because of jacedes's plea for more Weevil/Veronica stories. It is located
here.I have read some of your amazing work and frankly am pretty intimidated by the talent that scrolls through these pages.
Back to lurking.

Just wanted to stop lurking and say hi. Some of you may know me from commenting on veronicamarsfic or from posting at the AD boards but I wanted to say that I think all these links are great. I'm a big fan of a lot of the posters here. Does anyone know if we'll be able to view the things that were post at Neptune High anytime in the future? All those links are dead.

This is my first ever fanfic and I lost all the italics and paragraph indentations I originally had in it because I couldn't do that at livejournal, maybe it can be done but I'm seriously technologically challenged, so
I couldn't do it. It's L/V, kind of angsty, I hope you guys like it. Okay, I'm going back to cower in my corner now.

rosiecat, I really liked it. Great job for your first fic, interesting story direction there. Definitely the first time I've seen that, so kudos on originality. And I have to say, I'm really glad you posted this now, since it's been a really slow day for fanfic and my obsessive refreshing has been pretty fruitless.
And I'm currently working on my first fic, so one of these days you'll be able to find me in that corner.
