Jen, I've never beta'd a fic before, but if you can't find anyone, I'd be happy to take a look at it. I do read alot, so I know what I like. E-mail me at tlp70a@yahoo.com if you're interested.

I've been lurking around TWoP for forever and finally found this thread.
Here's my first VM fic at my fic journal:
The Salt-Wound Routine, Part 1: BridgeThe Salt-Wound Routine, Part 2: Damage ControlI hope you guys might like it. I don't plan on it going on for too long--maybe only one or two more parts. I know how it will end, but getting there has taken a different route than I expected!

Rant, I just read your fic and it was a really great piece. I loved that different perspective.
And what you said at the end about finding Duncan inspiring... I think it's because he's so hard to read on the show and some people find it easier to get in someone's head when there's less structure. You certainly can.

Rant, I felt compelled to review your fic. I left a review at fanfiction.net, but I thought I'd just mention here that it was easily one of the best fanfics I've ever read. Well done.

Man, I'm such a crappy lurker at this thread! I really need to learn to stop posting. But since I haven't learned yet, I have quick question. All these AU fics have got me wondering, has anyone written an AU where Aaron gets pissed off and kills Logan before Lilly has a chance to find the tapes? It occurred to me the other day that it could be a really awesome story if it was done right, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it.

winterspel, I was just coming in here to rec your fics - I found part two last night, read it, and then had to come back and read it again before I could go to sleep. Incredible stuff! There are a lot of takes on "what next" out there, but this is one of the best! I'm really eager to read the next chapter!

I'm sorry for taking so long, but I finally posted
Chapter Five of All That Remains. I'm not sure about how this chapter came out, so criticism, no matter how brutal, would be very much appreciated, as always.

Rant, I just read your piece on Duncan and I really like it. Maybe Duncan is inspiring because there is so much that could be going on with the character that isn't, whether due to TD's acting or the writers not exploring him. Reading about him in your fanfic makes me like him more than I do on the show.

Jul 15, 2005 @ 1:30 pm
I also often find that, in fanfic, I like Duncan just as much as the other main characters. While on the show, I clearly do not.
That's always been a main thing convincing me that the problem is TD's acting. I mean, just as many of the fanfic writers are very talented, we know the actual writers are very talented. And they DID give the Duncan all sorts of meat to work with. He's lost his sister, fears he might have done it, feels guilty over not remembering it, broke up with and later slept with a girl he loves but believes is his sister, has incredibly complicated relationships with his parents, is slowly seeing his best friend "go over to the dark side," has bizarre medical conditions, etc.
Admittedly, he has to play all that through a haze of medication. But we know he goes on and off the meds, and I'm sure the effects vary through time. He's better in some of the med free eps (MJS), but I still don't find him compelling overall, even though he was off the meds for much of the second half of the season.
And I'd think a good actor would lap this part up -- the chance to play all that stuff through the occasional glance, or the quick flash into his psyche, at those times when the meds aren't holding him back. I just don't think Teddy is good enough to pull off that sort of nuance. So I think he was particularly poorly suited for this role. He's fine at the fun-loving stuff, or even the straight ahead emotion (like the rape confrontation). But this character is wrirten with ALL SORTS of depth, and the acting just didn't deliver it, IMHO.

The quality of any actor's acting certainly isn't on topic in this thread.

I have another beta request.
Sophia Bee will be able to beta for me in a week or so, but I think I might like some mid-stream input/editing for my VD/Futurefic. It'd be espcially great to get the opinion of someone who likes the character of Duncan (since I want to make sure I hit the right notes with him), but who realizes it's an AU, and would also be willing and able to make brutal grammer/plot points when my fic calls for it. Experiance with heavy plotting is a big plus. I'm not sure when I'll have something to turn over to you, probably not for a few days. Anyways, if interested, please send an e-mail my way, via TWoP.

Babs, I got your fic and I'm working on it, I promise. I've just never beta'd anything longer than like, 500 words.
I just wanted you to know that it's taking forever because I'm slow, not because of anything wrong with your fic, which is great.

TrueMyth,
I've never beta'ed a fic before, but I get yelled at at work for being a stickler on the grammar and I'm a computer programmer. We're not supposed to worry about that stuff. I'd love to do it, if you'd trust me. I'm at my parents this weekend and the weather forecast is not good. Send me anything you want.

Hey TrueMyth, I know more feedback is better than no feedback, so I'd like to volunteer too. I'm pretty rough with grammar too, and I've beta'ed a few times. Most of my stories are plot-driven (although I've only written one VM fic), so I can help wiith that, as well. I tried to send you an email, but I keep getting an error message. So, if you need anyone else, I'll help too.
Oh, and I really loved "Facts About Mars". It was very clever, and it fit really well.

I would love to mention all of the fanfic writers by nam who have been entertaining me for these last few months, but I have had a few beers, and don't feel like typing. So, just let me say that you all rock my socks off! I am now obsessed with VM fan fic like I used to be with soap operas back in the day. The only bad thing is that the cliff-hangers are killing me! So, I have to mention a few stories by name that I am dying to read and long for each update...
The (sorry, I dont recall the name) the series that began with Pink Lemonade and Sex On the Beach
Alive
The Theohara Series
Holding the Curve
The Salt Wound Routine
School Daze
The skk... Season 1 Series (again, sorry)
You guys have me on the edge of my seat! I am constantly looking for updates for your stories! I love reading all the fanfic, but I am so invested in these series, I am dying for each new update!
Thanks for all the great work! (and update really soon!)

So I took another break from writing All That Remains (I know, I know, I'm sorry) to write this little one-shot called
Living In Infamy. Basically, I wanted to ask what would have happened if Lamb had been a decent human being.
TrueMyth, thanks for the cake. I do like strawberries, as a matter of fact. I just need to know whether the cake is kosher. Thank you, though, even if it's not; it's the thought that counts, after all.
By the way, one question: what is beta'ing? Is it like proofreading?
TrueMyth
Jul 17, 2005 @ 12:55 pm
Cyber cakes are always kosher and zero calories. They rock.
Betaing different things to different people. It's proofreading, editing, impression-gathering. It depends on the person doing the beta'ing and what the writer has requested (at least I try to ask my betas to take a particular look at one or two things than may be bothering me about my fic).
For example, Sophia Bee has done a lovely job with grammer and flow, but she truely shines with smut editing because she never lets me get away with say, giving Logan three hands or making Veronica mysteriously double jointed (a sight exageration) and helps me tweek my descriptions so they are sexy and let you know what is going on, without going to a level that many readers find icky. And on my longer smut piece I asked her to pay particular attention to PoV, and so she did, and it helped. With "Facts about Mars," I was mostly interested to know if it flowed right, so I just asked jay jay to look for that and general impressions, and definatly didn't ask for fact checking, so all those errors are mine alone.
As I'm sure you've seen from my posts, spelling isn't my strong suit, but I write in Word and that takes care of most of those issues. And that's my vast experiances with betaing. Your milage may varry.

Hey guys, I just posted my piece for the challenge. It's called Five Envelopes, and it's about 2400 words. The AU part is Duncan left Neptune right after Homecoming, so Lilly never died, Keith is still sheriff, Veronica is still popular and was not raped, Lilly and Logan are still together, and Lianne never left town. This is set like a month after graduation.
I bring you, Five Envelopes!

Just came across this piece on fanfiction.net titled
Revisions to the Status Quo.
It's in script-format (which I know some people aren't into), but I found it to be a fun take on the second season. I don't know if the author (marylane) posts here, but I'm not registered on ff and thus could not post comments there.

Two things - I posted 10 new fic recs at my LJ, found

Also - ahem - a bit of a self-plug, I have a new post-1x18 V/L, Wallace fic posted.
