I have to recommend Juliette's
Breaking Up the Girl to everybody. Beautifully written and very much in character.
Anything by Jennifer Oksana is a pretty safe bet that it'd be awesome, but my personal favourite is
Where My Wings Have Gone, which gives us a little backstory and a little post-ep (Where Your Credit's Due) story.

Ah, my first venture into Veronica Mars fanfic. Since Fanfiction.net (that bastion of quality - ha!) doesn't have a section up for VM yet, I put it into the TV Crossovers section. Here it is:
Title:

Mmm. Veronica Mars and Lewis Carroll. Two of my favorite things.

Firstly, vengeful iago, being the Juliette in question, I'd like thank you for reccing my fic! That was actually the first one I wrote for this fandom, right after Credit aired, so I'm glad it was in-character. :-)
And harmier, good luck finding Veronica/Wallace. I think I've read every fic in the fandom so far and the only one even mentioning Wallace is
The Way Down by tigs. It's not Veronica/Wallace in a romantic sense, more of a friendship one. For some reason, nobody wants to write Wallace yet.
Also
the VeronicaMarsFic community on LiveJournal has some good fic and is fairly active. Tends to get more Logan/Veronica and slash pairings, but it also has some good character studies.

Thanks, MaliaLoke! It may not be specifically a Veronica/Wallace romantic fic, but it has the kind of tone that I like in my romantic fics. So, I'm reading it as pre-romance fic. They haven't gotten there yet, but the solid trust and friendship they're building now will form into a solid romantic relationship down the road.

Tex Murphy is a funny PI who lives in post-apocalyptic San Francisco in 2040-something. He solves cases by gathering clues, solving puzzles, and interviewing people. The best parts are the interviews because you get to choose what he says, however he often puts his foot in his mouth. It's a really cool game, and I'd totally play a VM version of that.

A Sort of Private Blitzkrieg is really terrific. I especially liked the little flash of Weevil. Thank you for the rec.
And anything by Juliette is wonderful.
I have a theory that well-written shows don't inspire as many fanfics as lesser shows (like Smallville, which has an amazing fanfiction collection).
But I really appreciate the Logan/VM stories. They're all so wrong :"). Seriously I wasn't a big fan of the Buffy/Spike relationship on Buffy for the same reason. Mortal enemies might be hot, but the actual relationship was icky. Fortunately Logan isn't a murdering vampire ...as far as we know.

jeansheridan, I agree and disagree. I personally believe the big Smallville fic response has a lot to do with the awfulness that is the actual show and the fact that it had the potential to be so much more. On the other hand, the Joss Whedon shows are well-written (in my opinion) but produce more fanfic than almost anything (except maybe the Star Trek universe? And, these days, anime). Gilmore Girls is also a very good show that produces a boatload of fic.
I think the bottom line, actually, is the level of unresolved sexual tension in a show, and we don't have a whole lot in VM. So... not much fic, so far.
jeansheridan
Feb 19, 2005 @ 1:33 am
we don't have a whole lot in VM.
I feel tension whenever she's around Duncan or Logan. Weevil not so much, but they have a great friendship going on. In fact, it's pretty cool to see her starting up a friendship with both Wallace and Weevil, because they're so different. Weevil is so obviously her equal in snark and rebellion whereas she's almost a big sister to Wallace.
And I think Buffy was great in the first three years, but I noticed the fanfic went nuts after year three, in my opinion due to fan frustration.
I'm just hoping more writers will be inspired, whatever pairings they want to try. :").

Hey, I'm new here and I just wanted to say hi and that I write fanfic---for the person who wanted Weevil/Veronica, I do write both friendship and romantic. : ) But I especially love writing V and Keith, cause that's the relationship that really sticks out for me on the show, more than anything. So, off to write a piece surrounding Veronica wondering if she's a good judge of character or not.

Me too. Especially during the upcoming hiatus. I've faithfully done my part in harrassing fanfiction.net to add the category--not the best place for really edgy stuff, but it does its part to make the fandom more solid in terms of fic.
Hello,
PMD. You may want to take a quick look at the FAQs (see link at top of page) regarding posting--there's a no-signature rule.
Where do you post your fic? I don't believe I've seen you in the LJ communities.
PMD

Ooops, I'll check the FAQ's later on. Sorry about the faux paux. : ( Oh, I post on lists mostly. Is it okay to post urls to the story site or not? And I'm fairly new to the VM writing but an old hand at Smallville. Again, sorry about the mistake. It won't happen again. And hopefully I didn't make anymore here either. If I did, I apologize.

Nah, I was just giving you a heads-up, not a big deal. They just try to keep things very neat 'n' tidy around here.
As for posting links--threads like this usually include a hefty number of story recs--just use the Link button (or check out the FAQ for how to link properly). And mention whether you're recommending a story, or self-pimping (i.e., letting people know about your own).
Not so many recs here so far yet because the ficcing hasn't really caught up with the show yet. I'm sure they'd be welcome.
I dabbled in Smallville fic-writing for a while, but... Well, less said, the better. :) I'm feeling my way through my first VM fic right now but it's tricky because most of the characters have something to hide, and we generally don't know what it is.
PMD
Feb 22, 2005 @ 4:12 am
Thanks, Kieyra. : ) And I understand how you feel with some fandom writing---I want to forget my X-Files time, except for one or two collaborations I did with friends.
As to stories to recommend, I did read one a while ago (haven't had time to read because I have an active muse who writes in Smallville and VM) that can be found on fanfiction.net. Can't recall the name but it gave the reason why Veronica changed her hair style and was fascinating to read.
Thanks for telling me about the FAQ's. And if you ever need any help with the characterization (although at times it might be the blind leading the blind <g>), I do a pretty good Veronica voice and Keith too. Weevil, he just goes along for the ride. And gratefully, because of the show, now I don't have to type out Veronica all the time with him---I can do V. : ) And I totally understand about having problems once in a while, because of all the secrets the characters hold from themselves and others.

That's a great fanfic. Seems fitting to what we know about the joy that goes by the name of Trina. Another really good fanfic is a rewrite of last night's ending that will make all LoVe shippers squee. It's called Lancelot and is on the Veronica Mars Fanfic Community. If you have not discovered this community, it houses a bunch of really good VM fanfic and can be found at
http://www.livejournal.com/community/veronicamarsfic. All the writers on there are excellent. My props to them if any of them happen to read this.
Just as a side note, there must be more fanfic after this episode. So many great possiblities for LoVe fics and even DuMe (that just looks odd, Duncan/Meg) fics. I hope people start writing; it's going to be a long hiatus *dies.*

At the risk of causing her extreme embarrassment, I have to gushingly rec Kieyra's fic,
The Enemy You Know. It's Veronica/Weevil and it's pretty much the best thing I've read in this fandom (and I'm not really shipping Veronica/ANYONE at this point). What I especially like about it is that it's more compatable with the format of the show - not being entirely focused on a romance, but instead utilizing V's talents as a detective. The characterizations are excellent and Kieyra has a really good grasp on the show's tone.

Out of curiousity, in a bunch of the fics, I see Logan referring to Veronica as "Ronnie." Maybe it's because I missed the first episode, but I've never seen him do this before. Has he ever called her that? Or is it the first piece of VM fannon?
kieyra
Feb 25, 2005 @ 10:06 am
I have a theory that people are pulling it out of a shared cultural memory of Winona Ryder's character in Heathers (Veronica) being called Ronnie by one of her friends.
Well, it sounds good, anyway. I don't think I've ever heard it on the show at any rate.
Also: Thanks, Trixie. *blush*

He calls her Ronnie in the pilot to piss her off, and it's clear that it works. So it's not a term of endearment or anything.

Thanks, y'all. I had originally chosen not to watch the show because I knew I'd get addicted to it, and I expected it to be cancelled a la Jake 2.0. I got sucked in anyway, and now I'm just pissed I missed the pilot. It's ruined everything for me!

As the author of A Sort of Private Blitzkrieg, thanks to those who recced it! *beams*
Thought I'd toss a few recs of my own in here:
Five Things That Don't Suprise Veronica Mars by
Sltt. Veronica/Logan, up to NC-17, spoilers up to CotT. This very well might be my favorite story I've come across in VM fandom-- it's funny and heartfelt and painfully authentic to the tone of the show and the characters. Plus, what I think is the best.opening.line.ever. (The ending line is great too.)
Nobody Wants to Uncover by
Mosca. Weevil POV with shades of Logan/Weevil.
"Six college application essays that Weevil didn't write." AWESOME Weevil voice here, adds a new depth to him and makes it feel like even more of a travesty that he hasn't had much airtime lately, considering the potential for character development.
Hollow You Out by
sinaddict. Duncan/Logan/Veronica, post-An Echolls Family Christmas, R.
Logan does not want to be at Tri-City Hospital at eleven-thirty on a Friday night. Veronica hates everything about hospitals. And Duncan wants to go home and take a sleeping pill to forget the whole damn mess. Interesting study of the dynamics between the three characters, and the characterization felt really true to me.
Also chiming in to second the rec for Kieyra's
The Enemy You Know. A really well-written and clever look into the prospect of what Veronica/Weevil could be.

Aaahh! A Veronica/Weevil pairing! kieyra, great story! It was well-written and seemed so true! Makes me sigh at the show's untapped potential for this relationship. Loved the Breakfast Club comparison, because I've always seen them as such. I really must INSIST you continue the story. ;)

Must share two of my personal faves. They're both by Laura:
Sweeten the Pot - This is a fantastic little threesome fic starring Veronica, Logan, and Weevil. While it is pure smut, I thought the characterization was great, considering the storyline, and the dialogue was even greater.
and
The Evil You Know - Great LoganVeronica, ably catching their hate-hate dynamic. The dialogue is snappy. The characterization is dead brilliant.
[Be warned: both have
strong sexual themes. If you aren't into those, do not click on the link. Wouldn't want to corrupt any minds that weren't up for corrupting.]
kieyra, I am enjoying your fic quite a lot right now. I'm not a WeevilVeronica 'shipper, as I find myself squarely in the LoganVeronica camp, but your story does help me to see their potential.
