Anybody watching this crap?

I have to say Jamie Foxx should come back every year just to sing "Let me be your tennis ball" to Serena because it's funny as hell.

Oh yeah, they totally didn't bleep him when he said something about Terrell Owens shitting out a bigscreen TV, which is funny considering the show was taped on Wednesday.

I only saw the last 5 minutes which featured Samuel L. Jackson presenting an award with a very nervous looking Lebron James. The Outkast performance that ended the show was pretty good. Why was Michael Moore thanked in the end credits? This doesn't seem like the sort of thing he would do something for.
tvjunkie
I think it would be interesting if they actaully gave out awards. Cut the crap. And Jamie Fox basically did the same stuff last year.

Micahle Moore was thanked casue he helped with a lame short on fans, all of which where lame chactacures by Jamie Fox.

I "saw" it in the sense of, "Hmm, I wonder why the Dodgers/Dbacks game is on early...dum da dum...ah, the ESPYs are on at 9. Sooo...I wonder if there's anything good on TV tonight?"

Yet, worthless and trivial as ESPN's schmooze-fest is, I do find it somewhat annoying that the network can jigger the MLB schedule so it can televise a big circle jerk.

All in all, I'd rather have watched Jays/Rangers.

They did this? I just assumed there was a game on at 8 pm, and ESPN wasn't going to cover it, but FSN or a local station would.

Uh...on second thought, never mind. The Jays/Rangers game was on at 8; ESPN just decided to show Dodgers/Dbacks instead so they could lead into the ESPYs. I think my brain needs a lube job. Sorry for the unintentional semi-libel there, Disney. Heh. No hard feelings, right?
wdejesus79
You scared me for a moment there. I was beginning to be afraid of the power ESPN/Disney could wield.

(Don't worry I thought the same thing, before I realized that they just decided to pick an earlier game. You just scared me, cause I hadn't gone to MLB.com to confirm)

As I didn't see the ESPYs last year, I enjoyed the Tennis Ball song. It was corny but silly. And Kevin Garnett's wife is gorgeous.
JuanitaSmi
Anyone else going to be happy when this damn Collateral movie is out so that Tom Cruise can stop following Jamie Fox around? All of a sudden they're bosom buddies. It's annoying as hell. Cause sure enough, Cruise was at the ESPYs. Grrr argh.

I rather get salmonella than watch this 3 hr suck-fest & look at that bastard Stuart Scott & his ilk bring more humiliation to ESPN

According to Access Hollywood, Matthew Perry will be the host this year. I hope he does a good job and can bring in the funny.:) It airs on July 17th.

First impression, as always, what the hell was Serena Williams wearing?

No idea, but it doesn't bode well for her new line.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought that high school kid was all kinds of hot...until I realized that he really is in high school. I'm only in college, but still...ew. And I was vaguely irked that we saw so much Jessica "I'm such a good wife for being here" Simpson (seriously, shut up, I would have loved to have been backstage there). They should have let her stay at home and had Matt Leinart present with Nick Lachey -- that could have been fun.

Matthew Perry was disappointing. Seemed like he was trying too hard for laughs. I flipped channels when Destiny's Child came on. Overall...kind of disappointing. I was expecting better.

Can somebody explain the rationale of having both Venus and Serena dancing in the Destiny's Child number? I had to do a doubletake to confirm, but yes, it was them.

He didn't, bring on the funny that is. Within five miuntes he was in his underwear. I know some jocks are dumb but don't dumb down too much too fast.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the other woman on stage was Olympic sprinter Alyson Felix. I didn't see Venus, but I could be wrong. Did anyone else feel cheated in this performance? I thought Serena would be on stage for more than a few seconds. I wanted to see her shake her groove thang, not just do a couple of poses.

I can't believe it's been three years without a post for this.

Justin Timberlake is hosting. He is quite the PAB, but I do sincerely believe he's a sports fan and I got a kick out him being upset about Memphis' loss in the NCAA final. Not in that way, but I believe he was really bummed. And wasn't afraid to show it. And I loved how he went over to give Aaron Rodgers a hug. I can't believe that they cut to him (Rodgers) right after the canonization of Brett Favre. He didn't seem too amused. And I can't blame him.

If anyone else is watching, can you post/share comments from the second half? I can't watch the second hour.

I can ;)

I never thought this would happen, but the fooling around on the ESPYs actually held me for longer than either the Emmy or Oscar award shows. Granted, that still worked out to about 5 minutes, but still...
Zunnieflower
Did anyone else think that Steve Nash looked incredibly good?
MaryWebGirl
I thought John C. Reilly's joke about bringing back the Cold War so the Olympics would be interesting again was pretty funny.

All I have to say about this self-indulgent show (but then, what ESPN show isn't?) is:

Erin Andrews. ZOMG.

That was the most painful hosting of an awards show I've ever seen. J.T. jokes fell flat and were downright embarrassing, judging by the squirming audience members who had that "please don't come over here to me, J.T." look at their faces.

His crack about Eli Manning seeing a woman naked for the first time was cringe-inducing, not to mention Eli's wife looking as if she wanted to crawl under a rock. Granted, when you're up for awards and sitting in the audience you're gonna get joked on, but that was tasteless

And don't even get me started on the Brett Favre tongue bath and shots of poor Aaron Rogers in between. Awkward to the nth degree

I thought it was a funny reflection on his "nice guy" image. Then the Mrs. gets indignant as in "don't you think I've been putting out for years". Maybe she's not too bright (Ole Miss) and didn't get the joke.

What are you majoring in?

I really liked the "I love sports" medley and was laughing throughout. However, the athletes did not seem amused. At. All. He touched on a lot of sensitive issues such as Roger Clemens, Tour de France doping, Tim Donaghy, etc. It sort of brought all the negative things that happened in sports to the forefront in one 5-minute song. But I still laughed during most of it. The part with the KG Celtic puppet singing "Anything is possible" had me cracking up, as well as Jessisa Simpson/Tony Romo bit.

Also enjoyed the bit where he did the fake press conference interviews - especially the OSU "I'm a MAN! I'm 40!" head coach. But hey, maybe I'm easy to make laugh. I noticed that bit didn't go over very well with the athletes in the crowd, either.
YuppieLawyer
It seemed to me like most of the athletes were getting a kick out of the stuff. I enjoyed the show myself. I thought JT did a good job although he needs to work on his comedic timing. His monologue would have been better if his timing were better--there was some good substance in it. And I cracked the hell up at his Eli Manning joke which I thought was harmless fun. I did not, however, care for his joke about Tom Brady's girlfriend (Giselle whatsherface who used to date Leonardo DiCaprio) had the best "tight end" with a picture as evidence.

Really? It looked to me like she was cracking up. She was hiding her face, but her shoulders were going up and down like she was laughing.

I thought it was pretty funny.

I thought Manning's girlfriend was almost playing along with it, like she was feigning embarrassment.

She's his wife, but yeah, I had the same impression. I enjoyed the "ask an athlete to host" segment and I was really pleased that they did such a nice tribute for the Arthur Ashe award. I knew the story about the two athletes, but didn't realize the extent to which they were blacklisted after the 1968 Olympic Games. I was happy to see them recognized and glad that they got a standing O.

I have to say watching Kevin Everett from the Bills get the Jimmy V award made me cry...A lot.

Holy cow, this year's Espys is cringe-inducing. This Samuel L. Jackson skit with him as a sports reporter is way too long and not. funny. at. all. The jokes for the presenters are bad. It's almost as bad as the NHL Awards.
Cherry Wire
One thing the ESPYs needs to ditch is the dated elevator music used to introduce the Arthur Ashe award and possibly in other parts of the broadcast as well. It sounds like something you'd hear at a sales convention circa 1990.

Other than that, the ESPYs have their moments, if not for anything else then at least for the celeb factor. This is the first one I've seen in a few years and I'm surprised it's not a bigger deal (i.e. shown on ABC live in prime-time).

And Don Meyer's speech....wow. That's what it's all about. A 64-year-old small-college basketball coach from South Dakota stole the show.

I agree and same thing with the "fan" song. There seemed to be a lot of filler. They could've used some of that time to show some of the awards that they didn't air.

That's definitely what it's all about. It was a perfect speech. I laughed (particularly when he talked about stealing the shampoo bottles and shower cap from motels), and I cried. Amazing.

I can't believe they had Venus and Serena Williams present the Arthur Ashe award. They kind of go against everything he stood for.
There was a tennis tournement earlier this year in the United Arab Emeriates and they refused to give a visa to Israeli tennis player
Shahar Peer. There was a boycott and I think Andy Roddick and some other major players joined, however Venus and Serena as well as others chose to collect the check and ignore this blatant racism, IMO not the first people who should come to mind to present the Arthur Ashe award. Because they are usually calling out people as racists when they bump into them at changeover in matches and such.

I enjoyed the show- the comedy bits all went on far too long, but there were some genuinely funny moments. I liked the "Take it like a fan" song. And of course, Don Meyer totally stole the show.

One problem I've had with it tape-delaying it to Sunday night, when the awards are actually presented on Wednesday. Is that because of ad buyers, was Disney concerned showing it live someone could do something inappropriate, or perhaps they were concerned people on one coast or the other would complain if it were live on Wednesday (too early a start on the west coast/too late a finish in the east if it were done live to accomodate one coast over the other).
cabiness5
I always figured it was held on Wednesday so that baseball players could attend, but televised on Sunday because that's where the bigger ratings are.

At first I thought they hadn't boycotted because in 2009, the WTA introduced mandatory events. But Dubai isn't a Premier Mandatory (it's a Premier 5), so that wasn't a factor. But even if it were a mandatory, I think Venus had enough clout that she should have boycotted and then taken the punishment (instead of just mentioning it in her victory speech - which John McEnroe called her out on), if only to shed a brighter light on what had been done to Shahar Peer. I would love to know what the real deal was behind denying Shahar's visa, since they did allow Andy Ram a visa to play in the same tourney.

So yeah, I agree with you; they were a poor choice to give out that award.
