I was watching last night and the show was about the Scott Peterson case. I always like when this topic is on the show because of Larry's panel of legal experts. Nancy Grace, though opioniated, is such good TV. Chris Pixley, the "noted" defense attorney, is, well, just cute! A caller (not last night) said they sure would make a great couple. Nancy Grace laughed and Chris Pixley blushed. I thought that was hilarious, but I could see it! They could agree to disagree and then go off into the sunset together. As for Scott Peterson, what's with this guy? He has the creepiest smile in the courtroom. I know, I'm trying to keep an open mind until all the evidence comes out in trial, but it's hard!
pdxviewer
What, no love for the suspenders? (And should this topic be in the "News Shows" forum?)
Morning Angel
Here you go, pdxviewer.

As long as I'm here, I must say that I haven't been able to watch this show too much. I used to be able to enjoy it but now, Larry mostly grates. I did watch last Sunday when President Clinton was on. It was mostly interesting, especially since Larry let him speak without interruption, and they were no phone calls from the public.
Morning Angel
There is one thread already although I don't know how much of it is actually love for Larry King! I have brought it back up.
Mowgli
I'm glad to see an LKL thread here! Personally, I really like his non-confrontational, pleasant style--he pretty much lets his guest speak and lets his audience decide what to think about it all without imposing his own opinions everywhere. He has a great variety of guests, too.

Friday's show remembering Marlon Brando was a good example of what LK does well. Frankly, I've never thought very highly of Brando before--not his "great" acting, or his weird personality.

But, after listening to LK's panel of actors (and his own) warm and admiring memories--coupled with clips of Brando's work--it kind of opened my mind.

Whether letting his audience hear from actors...political leaders (from around the world)...someone who's on trial...or an off-the-mainstream comedian (like Bill Maher or Jon Stewart), King does a good job at giving people an hour to present themselves and giving the viewer a lot of new things to think about. He's never well prepared, but he's curious and pleasant and...I think it works!
VolWing
When I watch it, I usually enjoy LKL too, and I appreciate that, when someone famous dies, you just know Larry is going to do a reminscence show on the person that night. The Brando one was good, and so was the one for Tony Randall. A couple of weeks ago, I think I broke my own personal record for LKL watching in a week when I watched his Ron Reagan, Bill Clinton & Jon Stewart interviews. One of them I watched twice! I try not to ever miss his interviews with Ann Richards, Bill Maher & Jon Stewart.

But I do have to admit, if I turn his show on and the subject is Princess Diana, Scott Petersen, Kobe Bryant or any scandal du jour, I can't change the channel fast enough.
jerry
I'm the complete opposite. I rarely watch LKL except for the legal panel discussions of high profile cases. Of course, I'm a Crime Story/CourtTV junkie, so there you go.

I can see how Nancy Grace could rub people the wrong way, but luckily I enjoy her. I get such a kick out of her standing up to those defense attorneys.

Whereas most callers tell Nancy how much they love her, sometime last year, a LKL caller did tell her that unlike most callers, she didn't think Nancy walked on water. Heh, that was rude, but I laughed. I understand completely, because if I got the chance, I'd sure as hell say the same to a few public figures that I despise. Hilary, I'm looking at you. And you, too, Bill.

Regarding Scott Peterson: I thought he would be convicted easily. But as they discuss courtroom developments on LKL, I'm starting to wonder whether he'll be acquitted, or at least get a hung jury. Too soon to tell, but will be watching for the next LKL panel to keep updated.

She does kind of get on my nerves, but if I were to watch those shows, she would be why. I'm convinced that one night she'll just spontaneously combust while arguing with those defense lawyers!

No Nancy Grace tonight. Kimberly somebody was there instead. I've seen that girl on CourtTV sometimes, and she's attractive, but has huge, wide-set eyes and a large mouth. Something about her looking into camera made her look really odd tonight, not unlike a blow-up doll. Strange.

I was very interested in a question about Laci's diary from a caller who seemed to think Laci's mother has the diary from when they "broke in" to Laci & Scott's house and removed some of Laci's personal items. Since the diary would shed light on many issues, surely the police would've seized it as evidence, early on. But Pixley didn't say anything about that.

As did most of us. Us = Modesto area residents. I grew up in the area and still go there often to visit my parents, and the atmosphere in Modesto was "no problem, this fucker's going to fry" but then the trial started, and the law enforcement errors were revealed, and now it's like "oh shit..."

More on topic: I watch LKL whenever they have stuff on about the British royals, which is usually whenever Prince William sneezes or so much as glances at a girl. "Has William found his future Queen??! Tonight on Larry King Live!" Hee hee.

LOVE. her. She's so dam smart and such a man hater.

Nancy Grace drives me crazy with her eyebrow lifting and her dramatic pauses. I can't take her seriously because she comes across like a deranged lunatic. She absolutely refuses to see anyone else's point of view. I know she considers herself a victim's right advocate but I think it is important to look at all aspects of a situation before you make a judgement and be willing to admit when your wrong. We see innocent people being released from prisons all the time. I loved it when Scott Peterson's father called in and chewed her out. I think Nancy Grace has been unable to heal from losing her fiance to murder and as a result she has become this embittered person who sees every person accused of a crime as 100% guilty no matter what.

Not a big fan of Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom either. The whole attorney/lingerie model/wife of SF mayor thing rubs me the wrong way.

With Nancy Grace, she makes no bones about her lack of objectivity. You always know which side of the fence she's on.

Anyone else watch the show with Jeffrey Dahmer's father and step mom? It was kind of creepy. I always felt for them, they really couldn't have known their son would turn into what he did and to have to look back at everything he did and say "Oh...well...hmm?" must be very hard for them. I found it strange that the step mom came along at the same age he committed his first killing. Not saying that had something to do with it, but what a time to arrive. I felt like they completely glazed over the control issues Jeffrey had. When they brought up necrophilia, the dad seemed to not know why he would do that. It's been documented that Jeffrey wanted a sex zombie, he wanted control. And as far as being gay, judging by the father's comments it seemed that he didn't approve of it and Jeffrey probably knew that, it could've affected him and his actions.

What was really fascinating, IMO, was how the other son was completely normal and the opposite of Jeffrey. I would've changed my name if I was him too. Just an interesting show even if Larry King seemed to know almost nothing about what he was talking about. Way to do your research, fool. I don't like LK much.

I'm surprised that noone has mentioned the John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry interview. Kerry was the typical politician, but Teresa Heinz Kerry is a spitfire! Wow, she impressed me. She pulls no punches, says what she thinks, has a wordly perspective, having grown up in South Africa and Europe.

THK rocks! I enjoyed the interview with both of them, but would like to see Larry have her back as a solo guest for the hour, although I'm not sure he could handle her.

This is absolutely why I hate LK. As I understand it, he does not prepare much. He believes he is a strong "off the cuff" interviewer who does not need to prepare. He likes spontaneity. Fine, but he looks like a buffoon half the time.

Heather Locklear was on his show when she joined the cast of Spin City. He kept asking her about working with William Shatner. I swear, she must have said, "That was on TJ Hooker" about five times. Heather was gracious, but you could tell, that she thought he was a bit senile. She even rolled her eyes a few times.

I watch LKL often, especially when there is coverage of the Laci Peterson case and whenever Nancy Grace is on. She is so snarky, I love it.

Poor Larry, though. I was watching last night when he was interviewing Josh Nichols, Terry Nichols son, and he asked, "Where's McVeigh?" Then he caught himself and said, "McVeigh's dead." Ahhhh, cringeworthy.
divasahm
I've caught Larry asking the same question more than once during an interview, to the confusion and bemusement of his guest. Sometimes he catches himself, but not always. It's starting to get a little painful to watch.
Huntsy
Please tell me I was not the only one who watched the Tammi Menendez interview last night.

It was so strange. I was buying the part she was selling(Not Erik's pitch) but then when Nancy asked her about her child, Tammi got this strange looks and said she knows her step-father is famous. It just made my stomach turn a little.

Yeah for Nancy for not getting the kid gloves out.

Edited b/c I had a brain fart.
divasahm
I saw it, too, Huntsy, and I was completely squicked out. When Larry asked Tammi what she got out of the relationship, she replied, "A lot of support--he's always there for me".

Of COURSE he's always there for you! Where else is he going to be? He's in PRISON! I can't believe someone as attractive and seemingly articulate has to seek out a convicted murderer for support and companionship. How very sad. And I thought the discussion about her child was creepy, too.

Now I'm curious about what happened to her first husband. Larry asked about him and why he died at 33, and she declined to discuss him out of respect for his family. None of my business, but still....
Phenobarbara
and said she knows her step-father is famous

Heh. More like notorious.
monica53
What totally freaked me out was when she said, "oh, he helps my daughter with her homework. And he is more patient with her than I am". WTF???? Someone please call child protection!!! I had to replay that part twice to make sure I heard it correctly... Homework????

I absolutely have to know how her husband died! Don't you all? She own a pet shop, she looked well put together, didn't she? Nice nails, nice clothes, etc.

The other thing that got my attention was when Nancy brought up greed on the brother's part and she said it really was the media that made them appear greedy, her husband spent little money and got a TENNIS COACH]
Mowgli
then when Nancy asked her about her child, Tammi got this strange looks and said she knows her step-father is famous

Yes, that was creepy. I wish someone had tried to pierce her facade of normalcy a little bit harder--at least ask her why she began to contact a convicted murderer in prison in the first place. Moving her young daughter down the street from the prison was creepy, too.

I also wish they'd played some OTHER video clips--you know, the phony tapes of them both crying when they called 911. Or told how the parents were filling out their college applications when they were murdered (and one of them -was- going away to school).

Or mentioned how they premeditated the murders, travelling 300 miles with an ID they stole from a friend in order to buy the shotguns.

And no one mentioned, re: "money as a motive", that they went into the computer and -changed- the will after Jose was killed.

Nancy -did- at least bring up that they hadn't "only" killed their father. They also murdered their mother, who they did NOT claim had "abused" them. I'd like to see the brothers address that sometime--it was hardly touched on in court.

And re: Tammi Menendez. I'm sure if we knew more about her previous husband, the pieces would fit together a bit better.
Huntsy
I goggled a bit about Tammi and her 1st hubby.
divasahm, I think when you get on LKL everything is up for dibs. lol. I am wanting to know too what happended.

It was mentioned that she was abused her 1st marriage. They said it was not physical abuse. It was on a court tv archive. It did not say how he died though.

Word on the mother Mowgli, they said that she was still alive crawling around on the floor and they went outside to reload and shot her again. In the face. They also said that she had an injury on her hand that indicated that she tried to block the view of who was shooting her. They said she did not want to see who it was. That part is so sad.
There was also mention of Erik being gay.
ie:being caught in jail being serviced.

Court tv rocks.

I noticed when Sam Champion was filling in for Larry King last week that he was trying his best not to do his usual perky-routine as seen during his weather forecasts. He's almost the anthesis of Larry, so why he was selected is curious.
Huntsy
WTF?. Larry needs to quit. He is out of it. He just asked Jessica's Father if he feels guilt b/c the back door was unlocked and the bastard went through it to kidnap her.
Why would he ask him that? Holy crap I would have told him to kiss my ass!
fluttergrrl
Larry waved to the crowd of MJ supporters and other lookers on. He was dressed quite nice.

Larry just interviewed Jennifer Boylan, the transsexual who's appeared a few times on Oprah. Oprah mentioned recently that she was one of the guests that left a mark with her, but she never elaborated.

The thing is, even though I don't think of myself as homophobic, and actually have little curiousity about the surgical aspects of her transformation, I can't think of many Oprah guests that have come across as so sinister under the surface.

On Larry's show, Boylan repeats what she's said before in interviews, which is that she married and had children because she thought "love would cure her." Yet, in every other case, she says she's known for as long as she can remember that she felt like a girl trapped in a boy's body. She not only selfishly and recklessly drew another person into marriage, but went on to have kids, too.

Everything about her communication style with Larry is so controlling and agenda-driven. She seems to sit on pins and needles when her wife discusses their life. The photos that she's provided the show depict her as if she's posing as a model in her own head. Even her wedding photos are contrived--how many grooms wear top hats? Most of all, the photos tend to depict her looking straight into the camera, never at her family, even though her family in the photos are looking at her.

Why hasn't anyone exposed this scary creature for the sociopath she is?
Nelson
This is another individual who perhaps inadvertently is contributing to the cancellation of the news. CNN gives up 7 hours/14 hours if you include the replay for this guy to talk about absolutely nothing. Is it any wonder why CNN's viewership is under 300,000.
Canadian Tyler
The show actually averages just over a million viewers each night - making LKL CNN's highest rated show, so I couldn't see the honchos getting rid of him anytime soon.

Larry King Live isn't my cup of tea, I'm more of a news junkie - but for what he does, fluffy celebrity interviews (usually), he does a good job. He shouldn't be used for hard news though. Stick to entertainment.
Phenobarbara
Anyone watch last night's interview with Woodward and Bernstein? Larry pissed me off when he said "people under 40 don't even know what we're talking about." Fuck off, Larry. Plenty of people under 40 know what Watergate was about!
chatterley
I think he meant it affectionately, and as a self-effacing comment about how long ago it was. I have to say that Larry seems to treat people of all ages as people. He's actually a lot less patronizing than someone like Letterman.

Also, one of the things that older news people obsess about is the belief that younger people are getting their news online or from The Daily Show instead of from traditional news broadcasts.
BetyBee
Baba Wawa interviewing LK? In the battle of the geezer interviewers, LK wins - did she ever stop looking at her stupid notes? Only when he was singing to her. I like her reassuring him that he'll be around for a few more years anyway. He may be, but will she? - her own demise obviously hasn't occurred to her. They both have such huge egos.
Mowgli
They both have such huge egos.

I think Larry King isn't nearly as full of himself as Walters is. I think he really works at not becoming a jerk with all the fame, success, etc. and I liked how, every day, he takes his kids to school and then meets his childhood friends for breakfast at the deli.

From what I've heard about Walters, she has no use for you at all if you're one of the "little people"--i.e. not fabulously rich and famous.

I kept waiting for her to ask him for anecdotes about various people he's interviewed (not just "how many presidents and which did you admire?")

But she didn't, because...hey, she's interviewed them herself! And sooner than he did! And better!

I like LKL, and was interested with some of the things he shared about his life (childhood, bankruptcy, 6 marriages, etc.) But Walters? Just. Can't. Stand. Her.
chatterley
She does indeed have a big ego, but the more striking thing about her is that she's really out of touch. She doesn't really understand, or maybe resists, the new media landscape. Viewers aren't as gullible as they were in the 60s, or 70s, or 80s. People have access to better information, faster, from a greater number of sources. By the time Barbara Walters talks about something from her imaginary throne, it's already old news.
sweetsue
Finally Mark Geragos is back!

I would have liked to call in and ask if he watches Nancy Grace and if he had anything to say about her obsession with his sunglasses and cell phone. Or if he would ever appear on her show? I have always thought that I would like to see him have a show with an opposing viewpoint. He and Nancy would make an interesting pair. Sort of a Crossfire for lawyers.
BetyBee
I noticed that when LK was informing us that Nancy Grace would be on he called her "your friend" to Geragos and the camera did not cut to his reaction.
Mowgli
I hope Nancy calls Geragos on his, um, version of the truth.

For example, his reason for not calling Henry Lee to testify for Peterson, "he was there in Modesto for us, but we'd already gotten the same information into the record from other witnesses"....Ri-diculous!

Of course, LK would never call him out on that. I was pleasantly surprised that he even asked about it (and also that he had the quote handy, pre-representation, where Geragos said the evidence pointed to Peterson's guilt--and described him as a likely sociopath.)

Also, when Geragos said he'd never lost a death penalty case before....wasn't Peterson's the first one he's ever tried?

I don't think Larry asked him about making $180,000 for representing Jackson for three weeks, but I can't help wondering how much the Peterson family has paid him so far?

I hope LK will let Nancy Grace say her bit, especially about Geragos' misrepresentations of facts, and not do his usual, "...but there's still room for doubt, right?"
chatterley
And another thing about the Barbara Walters interview: Larry should never let himself be interviewed by ANYONE again. He's much better asking the questions than answering them. It's going to take me six months to delude myself into restoring his credibility in my own mind.

I have to remember never to take the yellow brick road to Oz again.
Quean
And another thing about the Barbara Walters interview:  Larry should never let himself be interviewed by ANYONE again.

For some reason, when Larry was doing the answering, his tongue would poke out of his mouth after every sentence. It was disconcerting. Maybe he'd just had dental work, and his mouth was numb. Or maybe it's one of those habits folks pick up as their body ages. Anyway, I'd never noticed him doing that when he's doing the interviewing.
Cockapoo2

He often looks like a lizard.

Any dish on why Larry looked so different last night?

Anyone catch Jessica Hahn tonight? What the hell pharmaceuticals is this broad taking? She came across as only slightly more lucid than Anna Nicole Smith. Among her shared pearls: Tammy Faye is a liar & Tammy Faye called Jess ugly after seeing her photo when the PTL scandal broke (actually, Jess looked kinda, well, better when she had real hair, real hoots & a real upper lip. But I digress.)

More Jessicaisms: she wishes everyone could experience an orgasm & she played coy when Larry asked if she'd ever consider being with a woman. And I'm not sure but I think she called the Playboy Mansion her church. Oooweee, baby.
sweetsue
The Jessica Hahn interview was kind of interesting. At first I was just going to move on to something else, but I actually watched the entire interview. I liked when she demanded that they get Jim Baker on the phone. I wish they had.

I need to relax and slow down. I just read that as "Tammy Faye called Jesus ugly"

I don't like myself right now,,,

Did I hear Larry right, congratulating his father in law on his 75th birthday?
Isn't Larry like 152? I know his wife is much younger, but it just sounded weird Larry wishing his father in law happy 75th when Larry is 73 (I believe.)

Oh, LKL fill-in host Bob Costas, I believe I love you:Costas turns down an hour on Aruba. (NYTimes, free reg required.)

Did anyone else see Celine Dion on LKL? She was crying and yelling over the events in New Orleans. She brought tears to my eyes.
Canadian Tyler
I didn't really like Celine before (in truth, I couldn't stand her) but she earned some major respect from me tonight.
