I got copies of this show after it originally showed on BBC3 solely because I wanted to see Anthony Head as the Prime Minister. But I quickly fell in love with the whole show. My favorite sketches are Sebastian/Prime Minister (obviously); Daffyd, the only gay in his village; Emily Howard the rubbish transvestite and Vicky Pollard. I actually didn’t like Vicky in the first episode and watching again on BBCAmerica last night I still don’t like that particular sketch. But over time, she grew on me. Or maybe she just wore me down with all the ‘yeah, buts’.

The one sketch I despise is the one with the Scottish innkeeper. I just find that character irritating and not remotely funny.
SimonAndOn
I'm interested in seeing this show because of some vague Shaun of the Dead links. So is it just a regular sketch show? Is it better than The Sketch Show? Because it would want to be.
PrettyButterfly
Little Britain is genius. It is a sketch show but it has a storyline that follows through the whole series. Daffyd and Vicky Pollard are hysterical. And Tony Head makes a good PM, better than the one we have anyway.

I think they took the show on a stage tour of the UK not that long ago.

Oh, Lord, I did turn in for the Tony Head bit, but the only gay in his village was just hilarious.

According to the Amazon UK site, the DVD for the first season of this show comes out in October. So that means next year for us? That sucks. This show is really funny. With and without weed.

I think it took a few viewings to get a feel for the show -- a lot of BBC comedies seem to be that way for me -- but now I'm hooked. I love Vicky, mostly 'cuz it's always such a challenge trying to catch all she says. I wasn't sure about Lou and Andy at first, but I've come to love Andy's twisted manipulative indecisiveness.
LiberryLady
My family watched this on BBC America, and barely made it through the first episode. But we gave it another try, and then we were hooked. Lou's "Are you suuuure?" is in steady rotation of our TV catchphrases, and also Vicky's "Yeah, but no, but yeah...." We also like to announce, just because it makes us giggle, [Tom Baker] "Britain! Land that invented the cat!" [/Tom Baker]

This show is excellent. I'm Little British myself (well, okay not so very little) so watched it on BBC2. It reminded me rather of League of Gentlemen but not so nasty. I was trying to remember who all the characters were. I watched it every Monday but it was a while ago.

Vicki's been mentioned. Also Sebastian/PM. Daffyd (My favourite favourist). Bloke in the wheelchair and his care assitant (presumably Lou and Andy - "That One." "Are you sure?"). Emily Howard. Scottish innkeeper.

There was also the boy who fancied his mate's Gran. Quite sweet at the beginning (in a creepy way) but totally inexcusably creepy by the end. Also the girl who married her school teacher, that was 'Little Britain', wasn't it? "The bell is for me not for you." That totally cracks me up because every schoolteacher I've ever had (except for the very early ones) has said that. I'm not sure that Americans would find that as funny because every American cartoon/tv drama/film I've ever seen sees the kids running out of the classroom while the teacher ineffectually shouts '...and get those book reports finished by Tuesday!'

Or... (The Grinch thinks of something he hadn't before) maybe American High School on TV isn't totally representative of real life. (Embarrassment at my presumptions - I have read Lessons TV has taught me)

I'm sure there are more Little Britain Characters though....

You forgot about Marjorie who runs Fat Fighters. I love that she always acts like she can't understand the Indian woman. When she asked her what she craves the Indian woman kept saying fish and chips and Marjorie kept acting like she couldn't understand and she finally wrote down the word curry as the Indian woman's craving. I love this show.
Promethea
Bloke in the wheelchair and his care assitant (presumably Lou and Andy - "That One." "Are you sure?").

That's the only part of the show I just don't get. I don't understand where the funny is meant to be there in the way that I do with the other characters. Can anyone explain?
Pooki
I think the comedy in Lou and Andy's situation is that because Andy doesn't actually need the wheelchair, he is basically just torturing Lou - changing his mind all the time, getting Lou to carry him up flights off stairs, stopping him from going to see Maria and so on. Well, that and Andy's voice, which really cracks me up.

One of my favourite elements of the show is Tom Baker's narration. I can't believe some of the things he says. The best though was when he gets the obscene phone call over the closing credits: ‘No, I'm not wearing any knickers...’. He's such an eccentric.
Promethea
Oh - so he's just lazy? That makes a little more sense. I wasn't sure if he just couldn't make up his mind about what he wanted, or was mentally disabled, or what.

Tom Baker rules. I know they scripted his stuff, but you could totally imagine him making it all up - it's the sort of things he would say.
LolaLaRue
I'm interested in seeing this show because of some vague Shaun of the Dead links.
I've just started seeing ads for this movie, which opens in 2 weeks. According to the IMDb, Matt has a role in it, but David has an uncredited voice part. Looks like it's in the vein of "Dead Alive" ... or maybe not.

Damn, I'm getting too into this show. Mr. LaRue doesn't quite feel the same way, so I'm alone is talking to slices of cake (asking if they have any nuts) or declaring that "I'm the only gay in the village." I hope someone gets this show on DVD ASAP for us here in the states!

"Britain, Britain, Britain. Population: One millions. Number of towns, Nine. Average height: Thirty. Shoe size. But just who are Britain? Over the next eleventeen weeks we aim to find out by following the lives of ordinary British folk. What do they, who is they and why?"

I love this show, especially Anne, the inmate at the Steven Spielberg Hospital, who can only say "Eh-eh-eh" unless talking on the mobile phone; Vicky Pollard, who is the ultimate motormouth and had the classic meeting with Social Services about her baby ("Where's the baby, Vicky", "I swapped it for a Westlife CD").

I also love the names of the places given in the show: Kelsey Grammar School for Boys, Aberdoon Stook Hoose and Uncle Albert Hall.

Looking forward to S3 in a few weeks.

When is BBC America starting a new season of Little Britain? I don't watch BBC America as much anymore because they're playing the Kumars instead of Little Britain and because I have the Office and Trailer Park Boys on dvd.

They really need to get it together with the dvd's.

Bloke in the wheelchair

The best one of these was when they went to a pool. And while The Caregiver guy was asking the pool man for assistance lowering his friend into the pool, the bloke in the wheelchair gets up, goes up and off the diving board, swims to the side, gets out and returns into the chair. All while the other guy (with his back turned) is explaing his need for assistance. A real hoot!
MyEyesSee
Daffyd and Vicky Pollard are hysterical.

...Marjorie who runs Fat Fighters. I love that she always acts like she can't understand the Indian woman.

All reasons I say bravo and, vote Vicky for Prime Minister. LOL

Thought you'd all like to know:
Matt Lucas and David Walliams have unveiled some of their new Little Britain characters.

Lucas will wear a 10-stone fat suit to play Bubbles de Vere, a spoiled loafer who spends her days in a dressing grown reading Hello! magazine.

The pair will also don drag to play a couple of blue-rinse Tory do-gooders, Judy and Maggie.

Lucas said: “We enjoy dressing as women.”

Another new character is hands-on drug counselor Doug, also played by Lucas.

The new series starts on BBC3 on October 19.

I love, love love this show! These guys are truly brilliant. I hope there is another season...SOON. I also hope I can buy the show on DVD. I will give it to all of my friends. I'm so glad I found this little comedy gem.
TempeRich
Does anyone know how many episodes there are and how many BBC America is airing? I've been watching for a few weeks now and love it, but it seems like there are only about six different episodes I've managed to catch. Hopefully we'll get to see some of the new season when it comes out.
Promethea
There were nine episodes in the first season, the second season is due to start in Britain soon.
Pooki
Did anyone else see Matt and David on BBC Breakfast this morning? They were saying that in the new series, Vanessa Feltz turns up at one of Marjorie's Fat Fighters meetings, and we get to see Dafydd's mother. Apparently for Comic Relief, they've done a couple of sketches with George Michael and Robbie Williams. I'm guessing George may be turning up at the Scarecrow & Mrs King pub...

The Little Britain DVD has been released in the UK, the review is Review
The extras are
The original pilot, a solid half-hour of sharp deleted scenes, previously unseen live charity footage, a Best Of Rock Profile short, plus short TV and radio interviews. An entertainingly crafted menu allows you to sift through scenes by character, so you can see all of Dennis Waterman’s “theme toon” adventures in one sitting.

I love this show, and I'm amazed by how it's managed to utterly worm it's way into British consciousness. A week won't go past without my hearing at least one person saying 'Yeah, but no, but yeah' or 'I'm the only gay in the villiage!'. And not just the catchphrases, British youth have whole chunks of script memorised. I met a guy who could rattle off a whole Vicki Pollard rant without pausing for breath.

Speaking of Daffyd the Only Gay In The Village, that's my favourite sketch by far. I love the one where there was Gay Night at the bar, and loads of people turned up and Daffyd was appalled. And then the barmaid his friend announced she was off to meet her girlfriend.
ozgal
Has anyone been watching the last couple of episodes that have aired in the UK? I'm loving the new character Bubbles de Vere. Almost sounds like Matt's take on Shirley Bassey in Rock Profile.

Marjorie Dawes is becoming the meanest bitch ever, and Vicky Pollard is still as quotable as ever.
SeeeTeee
No fair BBC America! Why can't they play the shows at the same time? I don't understand why it takes so long to get a show from England over here. There's obviously a market for it.
squiggles
Stupid BBC1 has decided to censor the new series for when it comes to terrestrial, the scenes mentioned are the Daffyd ones.

Which means many a terrestrial viewer will never hear the pleasure of an old lady saying- 'What he needs is a good cock up his arse!'
Bofbanoff
Yeah I happened to see the first episode of the new season on BBC3 and it was mainly only the Dafydd secene, where his parents give him advice on dates because the language is really crude. But funny as. And bonus points for casting Ruth Madoc as Dafydd's mum, I keep picturing her saying "Hi-de-hi campers!".

This weeks Fat Fighters was great, when she could suddenly understand the Asian woman when she won the lottery!

I tuned in for Anthony Head after seeing him on Buffy, is that the case for many of you?

I'm so happy to know a new season is coming...even though we in the US have to wait long months for it.

My favorite: Scottish inkeeper-- "Carrot cake, carrot cake, reveal your secrets! Carrot cake contains....no nuts."

We also say "uhuhuh" all the time like that manlady in the crazyhouse--we use it to chastize our two-year-old.

I tuned in for Anthony Head after seeing him on Buffy, is that the case for many of you?

Actually, even though I live in the States (I'm American but my husband is British and we used to live in the UK), I had no idea who Anthony Head was because I didn't watch Buffy. We tuned into Little Britain because of knowing Matt Lucas as "George Dawes" from that Vic & Bob game show and we were curious to see if he is funny on his own. And he is!
CateofCholia
My fave is Vicky Pollard although I am always happy to see Anthony Head.
raen
My husband tuned in for Tom Baker and conned me into watching it for ASH, we get it here in Australia.

I've seen a couple of episodes, my favourites are Vicky and Daffyd. I don't really find the manlady that owns the guest house funny, I think the humour is rather dated. The other stuff is more 2000s, Vicky speaks like kids I've heard when I was in country England.

I just adore the Sebastian and Prime Minister stuff, although I guess that is rather out dated kind of stuff, too. I find it funny nevertheless.
oakgal
My friend just lent me the tapes of season 1 and I have spent the last 2 hours killing myself laughing over Daffyd, the Scottish innkeeper, Vicki, Fat fighters--hell, all of it. It's all hysterical. Plus the added bonus of Anthony Head as the PM! Too fabulous for words. My friend has been doing impersonations of the "I'm a Lady" guy for a while and I finally got to see it. It's brilliant.

I understand Matt Lucas was in Shaun of the Dead as Cousin Tom. I can't remember which one Cousin Tom was--anyone remember? Was he one of the guys in Jessica Stevenson's zombie killing group?
Promethea
Yes, the one who was the equivalent of Ed. He had a very bad wig.
raen
Mr raen bought the DVDs home and they are brilliant. The extras alone are worth it. There are so many extras that it takes hours just to watch them. There is a Making Of show, a Day in The Life kind of thing, a bunch of Rock Profiles (which we didn't get here in Australia), 4 sketches from the 2004 Teenage Cancer Trust Concert, a radio interview with Jonothon Ross (I don't know him but it was a great to hear the guys talking about the series), deleted scenes, the pilot and more! We even got to see Tom Baker in the booth.

My only complaint? No interview with Anthony Stewart Head, one of my favourites and the victim of a long standing crush.
somnambulist
No interview with Tony? Dammit. I admit, I tuned in to see him, as I'm a loyal Buffy fan who can't get enough of the actors, especially Tony. ;) I love this show though - I fear that I squealed like a fangirl when some footage of Pride & Prejudice wa shown though. Heh.

I'd love to buy the DVD's. So they're out here in Australia now? Awesome!
HeadCase
I've been really loving the second series. The biggest surprise for me is how much I'm liking the Lou and Andy sketches this time around. I really started to find them boring last series because it was the exact same sketch over and over, just in different locations. Although the basic theme of Lou not realizing that Andy doesn't need the wheelchair is still there in every sketch, they are doing more of a variety with it.

I was also disappointed that there wasn't more of Tony Head in the DVD extras. He was the reason I started watching (but not the only reason I kept watching) and I was really hoping for an interview or at least something in Making Of extra. I did think it was funny how in one of the commentaries, David Walliams said that when they were casting the Prime Minister, they were looking for a Tony Head type and then it finally occurred to them to get Tony Head.

A third series has been confirmed for next year. There's also talk of a stage tour of the UK some time in 2005.
CateofCholia
I would love to see a stage show. That would be excellent. Vicky Pollard and Giles in person.
raen
I think it might be possible that the sketches from the Teen Cancer Trust concert are scenes from series two.

Can anyone confirm this? They include: Daffyd coming out to his parents, PM's ex-aid turning up and Sebastion freaking out, Lou and Andy in the park and Andy bashes up some guys who are taking the micky out of him, and Vicky goes to talk to students at her old academy with several babies in a pram "6 from 7 different fathers".
HeadCase
I haven't seen the Vicky one yet (but haven't had a chance to watch the last episode in its entirety yet). But, yes, all the other sketches from the Teen Cancer Trust event have shown up in series two.
raen
Thanks, HeadCase. I guess that I will enjoy them even morewith the proper sets and stuff so it won't matter if I have seen them. There's lots of stuff I haven't seen so that is something to look forward to.
highlandfan
I have just seen the first episdoe of the second series i was impressed with it, i didnt really wtch the first series bad night for me so I am glad it is a better timeslot
raen
I think the scene with Vicky from the Cancer Trust concert could actually be from the first series, and I had forgotten it.

I'm interested to see whether the changes or improvements that Matt and David discussed on the commentary are integrated into the second series. They talked about feeling that there were too many Dame Sally sketches and also the desire to put Anthony Head and the other regular support cast into the opening credits.

Has any one else listened to the commentary? What about the fact that the two elderly ladies actually fell over and both knocked themselves out during the pash scene? Do you think that it is true? If so did you laugh and feel really bad about it?

I've just ordered the Little Britain DVD that they did for Red Nose Day. They did a Daffyd sketch with Elton John and Vicki Pollard goes on a tv show called Trisha. Can anyone tell me who Trisha is and who her American equivalent is?
UnfamousLoser
Vicki Pollard goes on a tv show called Trisha. Can anyone tell me who Trisha is and who her American equivalent is?

Trisha is a talk show hostess, like Oprah Winfrey. Trisha was also, briefly, in a scene from Shaun of the Dead (she was seen on TV talking to a woman who was married to a zombie: "But he's still my husband!" "Do you sleep with him?") which also featured Matt Lucas.
LolaLaRue
"Little Britain - The Complete First Series" comes out in the states August 16. Since BBC America shows it infrequently these days, I'm really looking forward to getting the DVD set.

Kind of feel weird bringing this up on such a horrific day in London... Hope any of the posters on TWoP from the London area are safe and as well as can be in this situation.

This show is absolute genius. I love almost every sketch (except maybe the hypnotist one). I particularly love the one about Viv Tudor, who works at the jewelry store, and constantly proclaims “Ohhh, he was Goooorgeoussss”.

Also, the posh guy who is always asking for “bitty” from his mum. Gross.

And the woman in the bank, who says “Computer says noooo”. I think that one is funny, mainly because it is so incredibly accurate. I can’t go into a bank now without giggling.

My family has taken to calling me Andy, as I use a wheelchair, and I apparently change my mind a lot. Yeah, thanks for the support, bitches. Heh. “I want that one. Yeah I know”

Britain, Britain, Britain. Opened by the Queen in 1972.
Mr. Excitement
Kicking, because BBCA is airing a marathon of the first season (today at 1:00 p.m. ET) preparatory to aring the second starting this Wednesday.
NumberSix
I saw the commercials for the marathon and finally tuned in to see what all the fuss was about.

Wow. It's the best sketch show I've seen since KITH. I had to go back and read the rest of this board to make sure it wasn't a show that peaked early and sucked late. This promotion is working because I will definitely buy the DVD on Tuesday.
Adina J. Luthor
I love Little Britain!

But I preferred the way they shot Series 1 to the way they shot Series 2. For instance, the Mr. Mann sketch in S1. Because it was pre-filmed instead of done before a studio audience like in S2, it allowed for better camera angles that served the comedy better, such as the one used for this bit: "Have you tried Simmons on the High Street?" [arm flail] "Yes I've just been there" [jerk thumb backwards], and the close-ups and the slooow deliberations and deep breathing from Mr. Mann that brought much of the comedy.

Also, I'm disappointed by the lack of Ray McCooney in S2. They said it was due to having no budget, but they could have just scrapped the whole Bubbles de Vere thing and used the money from that instead. And I miss the world record attempts.

My favorite characters are Anne, Emily, Lou and Andy, Vicky, Daffyd, Ray, and Sebastian. Predictable choices, I know. But I also love that character who just appeared once, the lady in the shop asking "Do you know if anyone died in this?" I also have a strange fondness for Dennis Waterman, Peter Andre, Sandra Patterson, Kenny Craig, Dame Sally and Miss Grace, and Dr. Lawrence. And Jason, even though I always end up hiding behind my fingers for that one! I think I named almost every character. I can't wait for Series 3!
Aja
Little Britain is the best! My favorite is Marjorie Dawes, even though she's horrible...was it season 1 or 2 where the little boy joined Fat Fighters and she asked him about being bullied at school?

"What do they call you?"
"Fatty."
"Not fatty-fatty bum bum? Incredible bulk? Pigs in Space? No? Just fattyyyy..."

That kid was brilliant. You could tell how hard he was trying not to laugh!
