All of Nick and Jess's "sweet" moments lately seem to be wrecked by her belittling him or just being generally bitchy. ITA that every episode should focus on Nick, and if he ever decides to stay permanently in Figi sans Jess, I will be on the first flight down there.
This is a little belated, but I forgot to thank
Hailey for joining me in the "Kanga-Roo" confusion. I guess great minds think alike! (Even in less than stellar moments!:)

blackwing, the song that had the montage of Nick and Jessica's father a couple weeks ago was the theme to the 70's show "The Courtship of Eddie's Father"--which was about a widowed dad and his son, who were "best friends".

A widowed dad? Interesting. Is Tina going out of Pa Simp's life? The man is creepy - what he really seems to want most in life is to be married to Nick.

I loved watching Nick trying to surf also. For someone that looks like a jock, he certainly doesn't seem very athletic. We've already seen him suck on the golf course. And granted he did say he never surfed in his life before and was able to catch one wave. If I knew I was going to be in a celebrity surfing contest, I may have considered taking at least a few lessons back home first.
As a surfer, i have to weigh in here and say that Nick did an amazing job on that one killer wave he caught...surfing is perhaps the most difficult sport to learn - it takes years to look like you know what you're doing...so actually Nick did a pretty good job scoring that last ride. just say'in!

surfgirl, I agree. I'll admit that I'm no Kelly Slater and my first time surfing was incredibly frustrating also. Even with a longboard, it's very difficult to even catch waves if you don't know what you're doing. He did look like he was having fun when he caught that wave, and he had a good attitude about it.
My point was just that Nick isn't as athletic as I would expect him to be. I'm also reminded now of last season when he tried to snowboard and sucked the big one. He never had done that either, so I'm willing to give him a semi-pass on that - especially growing up in Ohio. But then just what sport is he good at? We haven't seen him do anything really well...

I'm guessing here, and not to blame
everything on Jessica but I bet Nick was a lot more athletic before he met her. I know that she went skiing and golfing and everything, but she seems to be incapable of doing anything Nick wants for more than five minutes. And, being the nice guy that he is, Nick seems pretty agreeable to hanging out with Jess and doing what she wants.
I have a friend who, although he was an excellent athlete in college, after he met and married his wife who had no interest in sports his game went completely downhill. He does play sometimes but not nearly as often as he used to and so he doesn't appear to be as skilled as you would expect.

There aren't many mountains in the Cinci area to be able to go to often and learn to ski or snowboard. The closest one was Perfect North in Indiana and it was a horrible mountain, so I can understand him not knowing. I think Big Bear Mountain in CA is a lot better than what is around Cinci. When I was at Miami, the OPC tried to set up a lot of trips to better mountains since there wasn't much nearby.

While this is true, there arent very many snow capped mountains in the Dallas suburbs either, yet Jessica seemed to be familar with skiing.

I hate that I know the show well enough to clarify, but Nick is actually good at snowboarding-- he can't ski. Jessica can ski, and it's the only sport that she's capable of doing. She sucked at golfing, complaining that her boobs got in the way. Nick & Jessica and Drew & Lea went on the MTV-sponsored ski weekend, and Jessica insisted that Nick try to ski, and he fell on his first trip out, had a major hissy fit and returned to the condo. They tried snowboarding the next day, and niether Jessica nor Lea was any good at it.

I have a Jessica moment that kind of fit's in with last week's show.
As A kid, my family always watched "The courtship of Eddie's father", for YEARS, when the theme song would come on, I would sing, "People let me tell you about my bedspread". Nobody ever told me I was singing it wrong. I am still (all these years later) teased about it.

Yeah, I remember that ski trip they took. The most pathetic thing about him falling was that the ground at that point was practically flat. I remember the hissy fit, too. Why didn't he just take a lesson? Instead, he just pouts and storms back into the house.
Now I want to go skiing....

Hey I gotta know, what city is Nick and Jessica's house located in? I know it's somewhere in California right? I don't think it's Beverly Hills, because in that city alone a house like theirs would probably cost around 5-10 million...and I know they're not THAT rich.
blackwing
Aug 5, 2004 @ 1:40 pm
I believe they live in Calabasas.
Rainmaker
Aug 5, 2004 @ 1:50 pm
Yes, blackwing, you're correct. Calabasas is a city up in the valley, west of the famed 405, probably about 1 hour with normal traffic to Beverly Hills. You can get a good house for your money out there (of course this is all relative in today's outrageous real estate market) - only problem is that you live so far away.
My bad about the snowboarding. Thank you for clarifying he sucks at skiing. Either way, everything we've seen of him so far shows he's pretty unathletic. Very deceptive of him. It'd be kind of like picking kids for teams in school, you pick the athletic looking one over the scrawny little kid, yet it turns out he can't do much of anything at all.
I would think that somebody who is so into sports and basketball and working out would have some interest in actually playing sports. And with Nick's relatively successful life, he certainly can afford to take lessons and ski trips and such. Maybe it is in part Jessica that doesn't allow him to do these things...

Unfortunately, I have to shamefully correct you--I, too, am embarrassed that I can remember this stuff...
Anyway, you are completely right about the above except that they snowboarded the first day, and skiied the second day. I remember that they had a very successful first day--Nick was a happy camper as a snowboarder, and Jess gave it a shot, but did not do well--however to give her credit she happily gave it a try and stuck with it even though it did not go well.
Since Jess had done that, she wanted him to try skiing the next day, even though she knew he hated it. But he gave up quickly after falling down.
I, too, will try to erase this knowledge from my mind!
Nana's Ghost
Aug 5, 2004 @ 1:57 pm
Well, I won't try to erase that one, because watching Nick throw a fit and throw his ski poles on the ground only to have one of them bounce back up and hit him on the head was hilarious. And the fact that Jessica and Leah were kind of laughing at him when that happened made it that much funnier.
Also (from upthread), it isn't PervDaddy that does the editing. The "mole people" at MTV do all of the editing - he just has final approval. So, it isn't PaSimp who gets credit for the Nick & Drew Love Montage (which was genius), it's the editors at MTV. They seem to enjoy picking on Nick a little. Sometimes it's almost like he's the butt of a big joke.

Wow, Nick and Jessica seem to be the rare celebrities that are quite famous but don't have too much money. What famous celebrity lives in this "Calabasas"? Typical celebrity neighborhoods in California are Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills, Brentwood, Malibu, and Orange County. For all the Nick/Jess relationship timeline experts... I'm wondering when exactly they started dating. I thought they met when she and 98 Degrees toured together. But he sings on that duet "Where You Are" that appears on her first CD, which must have been when she was about 14 or 15. Did they meet, record the duet, then tour and start dating? If she didn't know him before that song, how did she choose him to sing with? Or was the CD re-released?

Thanks for the info about her age... it makes a lot more sense that she opened for 98 Degrees, and then recorded that duet. I could have sworn that there was some singer in Jessica's circle (young, poppy, all around the same time etc.) that was only about 14 or 15 when she first hit it big. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe it's because I think Jessica looks like she's about 12 on the cover of her first CD.

I guess that would depend on your definition of not too much money. Remember, Jessica and Nick were not everyday household names before Newlyweds hit the tv. Even so, I'm sure that they were well off, with Jessica's solo career and Nick's - at the time - hot 98 Degrees. I don't think that you have to live in one of the aforementioned neighborhoods to verify your celebrity status. A friend of mine lives in Diamond Bar - which is almost two hours from downtown, and one of his neighbors is Snoop Dogg, and I've even heard that Britney Spears has a house there.
I think that Nick and Drew grew up in Ohio very middle class. Look at Drew's house that we saw in the first season. It was a dump compared to the palace that was Chez Simpchey. They seem like they are very frugal and practical.
Agreed. It's not that they don't have money. Just look at how much Jessica spends shopping without even worrying about the cost. Nick still identifies himself as being from Ohio, and with it, comes the blue collar middle class upbringing. I like the fact that he remembers where he came from and hasn't turned into a bling bling celebrity that spends money foolishly. (Although those sarongs could be considered a bit of excess...)

Yes indeed, we're sad, but still, I have little shame admitting my boyband love. I own Nick's album and just ordered Jeff Timmons' album.
Part of me is sad that Nick's label never used the show to promote his album the way Jessica's did. Even though his album is not, how should I put it?, very good, neither is Jessica's, IMO.

I think you can tell alot about how a person used to be before they were famous by looking at who they are now. I don't really think fame, money and popularity change people. I think it brings out more of who they really are. I think Jessica was always a spoiled selfish asshole, who if she wasn't rich and famous would be working in an ok job and living off credit cards well beyond her means. Or she would marry a doctor or a lawyer and spend his money all day and night. If Nick wasn't famous he would be in sports medicine, driving his kids to school in a big ass SUV everyday and living in a middle class neighborhood in Cincinatti. To use an example outside of them...Britney Spears is white trash. She has always been white trash, and now that she has money, she gets to be whiter trashier trash.

Just to clarify -- and hopefully not to beat a dead horse -- I didn't mean that from that conversation I thought he was unhappy with his wife. IMHO, it appears from the entire two seasons taken as a whole that all the initial romance has worn off and he's coming to terms with the fact that he's married to a hopeless dumbass who is surrounded by leaches. I'm with other posters who believe that this marriage is as good as dead; it's just a matter of them admitting it to themselves.
I just meant from that conversation it seemed to me that he spoke about her as someone beautiful to wake up to, kind of a beautiful thing he won. Just my impression. We also know that the honeymoon couldn't have been too romantic since she spent a lot of time calling everybody she knew and giving a play by play of the wedding night. We also know that she's not really that much fun. She never would have gone rafting or swimming with him.

How happy am I that it was Nick and Drew-centric episode yesterday? Yay, more Nick and Drew next week. Yes I've missed Nick's side of the family, I'm very tired of seeing Casey and the rest of the Simpson clan.
Being from Southern California, Calabasas is a very good neighborhood to live in. Yes, the houses aren't as expensive as say Beverly Hills or Brentwood (though homes in Calabasas are still out of my price range, especially their house), but if you can get a nice, large house in a good neighborhood for a good price, why wouldn't you take it? Since their house is in the hills, it's incredibly beautiful at night, and I'd wager that the sunsets are breath-taking as well. I guess I'm not going to measure their celebrity status (or even financial status) on where they bought their house, simply because it's still a beautiful house, and it's not like the the community of Calabasas is like Compton, Watts, or something.
Anyone know how many episodes are left of Newlyweds?

I think Nick just has a attitude that if you are capable of doing something yourself, you should. I wouldn't exactly say he is frugal (nice earring, Nick) but I think he is conscientious about money and doesn't spend freely without thinking about it.
As far as their house goes, from what I know they moved in before Newlyweds so they didn't have nearly as much money as they do. I'm sure they had plenty, but they were only C-list celebrities who's solo albums were a joke before the show. I wouldn't be surprised now that the show is ending if they moved into a bigger or better located house. Also, they might just want to get away from their "Newlyweds" house.

I just borrowed Jessica's "Irresistible" CD from the library, and I can't help myself, I'm diggin' it. I think I like her poppy stuff better than her slow ballads. I thought "Irresistible" was totally underrated. It had a nice mix of ballads and uptempos, and the songs were very catchy. However, Brit, Xtina, and Mandy did have singles and/or albums out at the same time ("Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", "Lady Marmalade", and "In My Pocket"/Mandy Moore) respectively), so the market was still oversaturated.

Honestly - How much money (relative to other pop stars) could these two have made? Granted, they don't have to worry for quite some time, but they are not in the league of the major young pop stars.
Nick was part of 98 Degrees who were OK in their day...but he had to split his earnings among all those other dudes. Hey have been a non-entity for years.
Jessica's music earnings are not even comparable.
This is why they have to do these stupid gigs (zoo and rodeo appearances, frangrances, TVshows).
Album sales are not the bread and butter (witness TLC, Toni Braxton, and others). While far from being broke, Nick is smart to be frugal. I mean, it's not like they have a 10 year plan re: their careers. It's hit and miss for most stars.
The QVC chick simply had to prepare for more important things. What...is she going to sit around and mak small talk with Jessucka? SHe either had to go home or prepare for another sales spot. I thought it was hilarious how eveyone just left Jessucka on set and she was left standing there.

I could be talking out of my butt, but it seemed that Jessica and Nick's wedding was all over the place for InStyle and other magazines (I got married in 2002 and was flooded with info on Jessica, LeahAnn Rhymes, J-Lo, and Drew Barrymore--ironic given the fact that 1/2 are no longer married!)
I wonder if any of the wedding was subsidized? Also there is this terribly tacky wedding planning book that Jessica has (I think the metal frog was sitting on it during the Kentucky Derby episode). I flipped through it once and it had something idiotic about flowers and I put it back, afraid anyone at Borders would see me. I'm sure that helped pay for any debt that they had.
However, Jessica does strike me as someone who would be maxing out a lot of credit cards. Honestly, if she weren't famous, she reminds me of those weird identity theft commercials you see on Citicard (I bought stirrup pants, anklets and diamond studded press on nails... I feel like the prettiest girl in the whole development!)
And $1400 sheets! I am tempted to say "Overstock.com"!!!
I need to stop watching this show... feel braincells dying all the time.
