I had a question for you guys about the mug shots they use for the players. They're aren't really that flattering. Any of them, I think. But are they the official USO shots? Because I thought USA and CBS were using the same ones.
I don't know the answer but they are incredibly unflattering. Even the really attractive players look just awful.

Already my Aunt (from Dorset, Castallack)
LOL, thanks for the shout-out.

Well, I wanted Henman to win but this definitely sets up a better final tomorrow, in my book. But poor Tim, always the bridesmaid. I think he played extremely well but you just can't beat Federer when he's playing at the top of his game. I really don't know what to predict for tomorrow other than a teriffic match.

Re: yesterday, I've always loathed Capriati who seems to be a petulant brat. I'm really pleased that she didn't make it. And hey, maybe the final I'm watching right now will give some cheer to the Russian people who surely need it.

And since we discussed the Roddick Amex commercial earlier I just have to say how much I adore the new ending. I really thought, when they showed it the first time this afternoon, "it must suck to bet on the wrong horse." But then came that new last scene and it just blew me away, it was so unexpected and funny. Kind of reminded me of that Brady Bunch episode where Alice bakes two different cakes in case the team loses.

Dear announcers: please stop declaring how long it's been since there were no Americans in the finals. I, for one, couldn't care less.

I'm chiming in on this one to say: thank God it's not just me.
The head shot the networks have been using for Agassi have him in a tuxedo. I have this picture on my computer at work and I'm pretty sure it's from his foundation's annual fundraiser last October but could also be from the Master's Series Year-End Tournament in Houston LY. His official ATP portrait and his official US Open portrait are both different.
At least with NFL, they do a videocapture (did I make up that word?) of each player at the beginning of the season so you can tell WTHell is going on. Agassi's official ATP portrait hasn't changed in four years. (Yes, I'm that obsessive about looking.)

And ditto on Castallack's comments about the edited/new Andy Roddick AmEx commercial.

I still haven't caught the entire Canon commercial.

Heh. Yes, see I love that self-deprecating ability of his. It's sooo endearing.

I think the mugshot situation should be redeemed right away. I mean, if they are trying to build tennis's popularity, then you'd think they'd pay attention to stuff like that. Roger's "business in the front; party in the back" is wacky! And even Dementieva, who I think is Britney Spears-type pretty, looks horrible!

And I fear that you will all think me really crazy, but I am pretty charmed by Kuznetzova. I think she's striking how different the angles around her eyes are.

OK, folks. Is Martina Navratilova really sitting on the concrete stairs?
Castallack
OK, folks. Is Martina Navratilova really sitting on the concrete stairs?
See, and when I do that, the ushers yell at me. What's up with that?

Poor Dementieva, two losses in the same year at the finals. But Kuznetsova really played quite a match. No question she deserves the trophy. Although I still wonder if Davenport hadn't been injured.....ah, the questions that can never be answered.

BTW, how hard is it to say Kuznetsova? Kooz - nets- ova. Gee, that was tough.

Re: the Roddick commercial. Best part for me is the line from the girl that almost gets cut off at the end:"The guy back there has this obnoxious trophy in the way."

Speaking of commercials, will someone give Lenny Krayzelburg a job already?
Hoola
Yeah, I can give him a job but it won't be financial, if you catch my drift.

Dementieva had me tearing up a bit. I hope she and Kusnetsova stick around for a long time. I really like them both - personality and game-wise. Mary Carillo's crack that Sveta was like a big, nice labrador puppy really paid off when immediately after winning, Sveta ran up into the crowds to get hugs and encouragement from her loved ones.
Jeannie632
I thought it was a great final, considering some of the bad GS Finals. Sveta played amazing, and god Elena, work on that serve. Great speech by Elena in the end, but was it just me, but did Kuznetsova not look that happy winning the US Open. She reacted like she just won some Tier 3 tournament.
sirhcmeister
It was a rather subdued reaction from Sveta, but then again, Anatasia Myskina's reaction was the same winning the French Open. Kuznetsova really played out of her mind tonight, and really, she, Sharapova and Petrova should be the top 3 ranked Russians by next year. Myskina relies too much on other's mistakes, Zvonereva is a headcase, and we all know about Elena's weakness.

At the moment, it's actually quite a deep upper tier now in the women's game, with any of the current top 10 as possiblities to win. In the past, it was only 3-4 women dominating - I think it's good to see the depth.

It's good that Mary Carillo pointed out "where are the young American female prospects?" Cause outside of Capriati, Lindsay, Serena and Venus, who is there?
Chanda Rubin? Amy Frazier? Meghann Shaungessy? Lisa Raymond? I hope the USTA figures out a plan and soon.

ETA: I did count 15 American women in the top 100, but the only ones under 21 (I think) are Ashley Harkeload and Shenay Perry. Many of them are well over 25, and approaching 30.
ShellsandCheese
I don't think the fact there doesn't appear to be any upcoming US talent has much to do with the USTA. The fact is right now, the field is wide open in a way it never has been before. The Soviet Union is gone, and now you not only have to contend with Russians, but you have Belurussians, Ukrainians, etc to contend with.

Truth be told Americans like instant glory, fame, and riches. It is far easier to shoot for basketball, football, soccer, etc than it is to battle it out for years and years and at the end of the day you might still only be ranked 20 behind any number of people from other countries.
Castallack
but did Kuznetsova not look that happy winning the US Open. She reacted like she just won some Tier 3 tournament.
I also thought her reaction was very subdued. All the players seem to climb into their family/friends boxes so that wasn't a huge deal. I'm looking for a drop-to-the-knees, teary, I-can't-believe-it-reaction. I wonder if it was because she has a relationship with Dementieva? (I don't know if she does but if she did that could explain it). I like the Williams v. Capriati type of matches where you don't just want to win, you want to kill the other person. That's one of the things I thought was lacking in all those Venus v. Serena finals. But I'm just theorizing here; I really have no idea.

I don't think the fact there doesn't appear to be any upcoming US talent has much to do with the USTA.

According to Dementieva's coach, (I'm quoting from the NY Times here): "She credited Russia's tennis success to the increased financial resources the government has supplied since the sport joined the Olympics in 1984, and the sheer number of players in one of the world's largest countries." I understand that first part but so what's Canada's excuse if the second part is true?
Helter Skelter

I think this is accurate in terms of the men's tour. I'm fairly certain that LeBron James will make more in one year of his Nike endorsement than Andre Agassi made these past five years on tour. But, in terms of female athletes, I believe tennis is the way to go. Look at Sharapova and her instant celebrity. Additionally, USA women's soccer was/is in financial straits, and the WNBA hasn't quite caught on in the mainstream--I would say it has a cult following, if anything.
Distant Sun

Yeah, if by "striking" you mean pretty with a big nose (for all the NewsRadio fans out there). Then again, I can't even begin to think of that girl as pretty. She was charming, though. And she attacked Elena's serve like Serena does.

It's good that Mary Carillo pointed out "where are the young American female prospects?"

How quickly we forget. Angela Haynes made quite a splash last week. She may develop into a good player relatively soon.

It's not one of the world's largest countries. Well, it is in land mass, but nowhere close in population. China and India are the countries that may soon have similar explosions (we've already seen the Chinese women win the gold in doubles). And someone needs to tell Dementieva's coach that some of the credit for that success goes to Yevgeny Kafelnikov, a two-time Grand Slam champion, former #1 player, and the person who proved Russians could make a living playing tennis.

Well, you get my point. I just don't think the size of the country is anywhere as important as the government support. Take your example of China. One of the folks calling the Olympic matches (how quickly I forget - have no idea who it was; Mary Carillo, maybe?) told the story of how the doubles team was pulled off the tour and trained for six months for the specific goal of winning an Olympic medal. I haven't noticed India having anywhere near the success of, say, Australia. I really think facilities, culture, and official support are the difference. And my bad, I should have mentioned that Dementieva's coach is Olga Morozova who was the first Russian woman to play in the finals of a slam (French Open in 1974).

But either way, someone mentioned Angela Haynes and also, the Girls' final is tomorrow and an American is playing in it so I guess there are some up and coming American women on the horizon.

ETA, I should add an interesting tidbit. I sat with (Canadian) Maureen Drake's coach at the qualifiers (no big shakes, there are like 10 people at each match and they all sit together). We got into a conversation when he saw that I was rooting for her (she played a great, tough match) and he told me that there are like five indoor courts at professional level in all of Ontario. I don't know if that's true but he was trying to emphasize to me how little support there is for tennis there. So I guess we ought to be thankful for what we have.
ShellsandCheese

This is kind of true but I do not think Kafelnikov had that big of an impact on Russian womens tennis. Truth is Boris Yeltsin was a huge tennis fan and after the fall of the Soviet Union--the lure of team sports has died down. Young Russians no longer want to do gymnastics, figure skating, etc but individual sports, yes. For sports tennis as about as individual as you can get.
sirhcmeister

After the fall of Communism, Kafelnikov certainly showed Russians that you could make a living playing tennis, but it seemed at times, money was the only thing on Kafelnikov's mind, as his competitiveness was always suspect, especially at the Grand Slam Tournaments. Outside of his 3 Grand Slam Final appearances (with 2 wins), he only made 1 or 2 Wimbledon Quarterfinals, and 2 U.S. Open semi-finals - not the most stellar of records. Not to mention, he'd play 30 tournaments year-in, year-out.

During the era of the Soviet Union, it wasn't as if there weren't any players. Olga Morozova, Dementieva's Coach, started the trend, and soon came Alex Metreveli, Andrei Chesnokov, Andrei Medvedev, Larisa Savchenko-Neiland and Natasha Zvereva. However, there was always the debate on how much of the winnings the Soviet government was able to acquire from the players.

As for gymnastics and figure skating, the Russian financial and coaching backbone have pretty much dried up in these two sports, so don't expect any Irina Slutskayas or Yevgeny Plushenkos popping up from Russia any time soon.
Distant Sun

Well, he gave Sharapova her first tennis racquet, so that's something. :)

However, there was always the debate on how much of the winnings the Soviet government was able to acquire from the players.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Unlike the others, he was actually bringing home a lot of money.

I think he gets a bit of a bad rap for some of that. It wasn't that he wasn't competitive; he just gave up a little too easily if things weren't going his way (and not all the time). He may have had more French titles if it weren't for Kuerten. Besides, after growing up in Soviet Russia, I'm not sure we can blame him for being money hungry. He did fight extremely hard to win that gold medal in Sydney. As for all the tournaments, it's to his credit that he could play that many. Remember, the guy just won the French in doubles two years ago. Come to think of it, he's really the only top man in the last decade or so to play both singles and doubles regularly.
ShellsandCheese

There are still enough up and comers in the pipeline to keep the Russian tradition in figure skating going. Russia continues to be pretty damn dominate in the Jr. Worlds and they have won 3 out 4 figure skating events in the past 3 winter olympics.
Jeannie632
I was really a hardcore tennis fan about 2 years ago, and at that time, I remember hearing about a talented 12-13 year old Russian girl who was planning on getting American Citzenship and playing for the US, then again I may be wrong and she decided not to change citizenship.

The Russian women currently hold the #2, #5, #6, #9, #11, #13 and #17 ranking. Wow! And if Safina ever gets her head into the game, then I can also see her in the Top 20 and Vera D. can get there as well.

Awww. All you Timmy fans:

Cute interview up at the USOpen site. Pretty long, and pretty standard for the first half. But he gets pretty darn adorable toward the end. The video doesn't show that part, sadly, but you can read it in the transcript.

Go, BabyDoll! (TM someone up thread; Harry24 maybe?) You can do it!

Yay! Finally. The football is over.

Edited to say Ugh! Not yet! C'mon CBS....

Yes, because it's important to show us football hightlights instead of tennis. I mean, it's not like we can catch the scores and interesting bits on the evening news.

Feh, I hate network television. At least USA showed tennis when they said they would.
Helter Skelter
Yay! Finally. The football is over.

Well, I guess it's obvious which sport is considered to be more important in American society. Do you think they would've done this if it had been an Agassi/Roddick final?

I'm reminded of the SNL sketch: If it wasn't for futball, I would not be in futball tooooday.

Can you sense the knuckles dragging? I knew that you could.;-)

Woot, cheesy singing and now our regularly scheduled tennis!
dcalley
Mmm, that's good ass-kicking.

Woot, cheesy singing

Was it me, or did that guy totally butcher the words to "God Bless America"? I admit it's been awhile since I've heard that song, but he seemed to muck up the middle.

At the risk of making this chat-like, this match is really painful. At least Henman put up a bit of a fight.
Chesty LaRue
Well, it is painful in that it is not competative.

But man- is anyone else impressed by Federer's shots? He has not been in this zone for a while and when he is his tennis is simply gorgeous.
Slade347
Well, I guess it's obvious which sport is considered to be more important in American society. Do you think they would've done this if it had been an Agassi/Roddick final?

Yes. The NFL is still the king when it comes to broadcast sports on American TV, and with this being the opening weekend, CBS was going to milk it as long as they could no matter who was in the US Open final.

Nice to see Hewitt win a game. Damn, Feder is just awesome when he's on his A game.
Trace.Stevens

Hewitt got better! Go bumble bee-like Aussie man, go!

ETA: Okay, so maybe not. So sad, I wanted Federer to at least get a run for his money.
Helter Skelter
The NFL is still the king when it comes to broadcast sports on American TV, and with this being the opening weekend, CBS was going to milk it as long as they could no matter who was in the US Open final.

Then CBS shouldn't have the rights to broadcast this. Did they actually make Federer and Hewitt wait around the stadium until after the football broadcast (and post-game crap) had finished? According to my tvguide.com, the tennis coverage should've begun at 4pm, but didn't. I mean, I know this is the way things are and that no amount of complaining will accomplish anything, but it just really sucks.

ETA: Line of the match? "Boy, oh boy, John, you've got those peepers in focus!"

Peepers? Way to show your age, Dick.

Screw CBS. I'm glad I don 't watch "America's Most Watched Network". Putzes. They leave two of the world's best athletes waiting a half hour for one of the year's most important matches so that we can get an extra half hour of football crap on a regular Sunday, and then they rush us out of the Trophy Ceremony for 60 Minutes? It's like, well Thank God that's over! Back to our money makers. Did you hear Allen say that there had been over 600, 000 people there, and that Federer had just made history?

That's it. I'm on strike. Sorry Letterman.
Jeebus Shuttlesworth
Woot, cheesy singing

I don't think that dude had heard of "God Bless America" before, because he certainly didn't sing any of the correct notes. But that's called "making the song your own" in American Idol-ese.

Damn, that was a speedy asskicking.

The only thing missed was the US Open Court of Champions ceremony. I thought the game might have been on tape delay until I checked the live scoreboard at usopen.org. I'd much rather watch the end of Raiders/Steelers and highlights than thirty minutes of just about anything else. :) Even McEnroe said he liked the game starting later so the fans would have time to arrive and fill up the seats.

I was happy to hear Kim C. will be back on the court soon. Anyone know what her protected ranking is?

edited for spelling and stuff
Distant Sun
Well, I think we all expected that, but it was still a great day. Roger (not to mention my Eagles) won pretty easily. Personally, I don't think domination of the tour can be called boring when it's this pretty. I'll say it again: Federer is on another level.
Castallack
Wow, I'm so glad that was my first final attended ever. I kept thinking, please let this last longer than the time it took me to get here, please.

So what took place before the match was the induction ceremony into the Hall of Champions. It began promptly at 4pm. Bud Collins gave a little spiel about the USTA, the Hall of Champions, and some other hoohah that I tuned out. Then there was a video tribute to each of the four (Jack Kramer, Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, and John McEnroe). After each video tribute, the honoree came out and said a few words, except Steffi Graf who had filmed a video acceptance and thanks. I guess she couldn't stay an extra 3 days after Andre lost. Also, McEnroe's speech went on and on, way longer than the others and Bud Collins kept giving him signals to wrap it up. McEnroe kept saying "Well, this is the final part" again and again. Finall he said something like, "CBS tells me that football isn't over so I can keep going."

Then they all left and the "new voice of black soul" with a new album on Virgin records comes out and well, you know the rest. So for those at the stadium, it was pretty seamless and you wouldn't have known anything about football if McEnroe hadn't mentioned it or you hadn't known in advance.

The trophy ceremony basically ended at 7 so I don't think you missed much on TV.

I really would have preferred a more competative match. It's fun to watch Federer bring his A game but it would have been twice as much fun if Hewitt had also brought his A game.
blackwing
Ugh, of the semifinalists on both the men's and the women's side, the one of the four that I least wanted to win both won. Is there a US Open Ball like there is at Wimbledon, where the men's and women's champions dance with each other? Because this year's Open winners would certainly be one fugggggggglllllllyyyy couple!
OopsSorry
Thanks for the report, Castallack! It's good to know that they weren't stuck waiting around. Can I still boycott CBS, though? Because I wanted just 5, maybe 10, minutes of wrap-up or closure. Maybe some thoughts on the upcoming events of the season, what-have-you. Anyway, they gave us 30 minutes of chatter of a regular-season Sunday of the NFL, so I was hoping for just a little bit extra.

I think I am back in Lleyton's corner. I was thoroughly impressed by his maturity today. He was extremely calm and sweet in his comments, and a real trooper in that second set. He was humble and proud of his efforts all at the same time. He just seemed very genuine. I'm so happy to like him!

Besides, I feel a certain warm feeling when the pans to the players' boxes reveal two strong, lovely, athletic, independent women! Who both appear to be sporting engagement rings!!! I don't know: Roger's not saying anything, but Mirka was hiding that baby every time she realized she was on camera.

I love tennis!

But I still hate CBS.

But the only reason they had that ceremony starting at 4 pm was because there was no way football would be over at 4pm. And when a normal day at the Open starts at 11 am there is no excuse for people not to be able to be in their seats by 4 pm. Also, the Women's Double final ended at 2:32 pm so there would have been plenty of time for all the pre-match ceremony stuff. As for the end of the Steelers games, how nervous did I get when the Raiders tied it up with 5 minutes to go? Castallack, you don't know how lucky you were--you nearly ended up with more time sitting and waiting.

I love Roger Federer. His game is so beautiful. The friend who came with me on Saturday, who is a huge playing-tennis fan but doesn't really watch it on tv, was really struck by 1) the huge difference in playing styles between the first semi and the second (we both preferred the shot making of Federer v. Henman) and 2) how effortlessly Federer could make a winner as compared to the set up with Henman making a winner. She was rooting for Tim because he "was trying so hard"--we both felt for Roger because the crowd was so pro-Tim and as long as Federer can play this well he isn't going to get the cheers during a match (although he certainly gets them when he wins).

It feels like just a couple of days ago that I was noting all the signs that the US Open was coming. Now it's over. I'm sad.

I think she has potential. When she smiles you can see it. Once the braces come off and someone teaches her how to use make-up she will improve a great deal. She does however have a Frankenstein-esque grunt though.

Joining in with the new Roddick commercial love. That’s cool that they were thinking ahead, just in case.

I was so looking forward to the Hewitt/Federer match. I thought it was going to be exciting to watch. That was just no fun at all. The second set was good although I almost wonder if Roger wasn’t throwing some of those games just to make it more interesting. (Of course with 1 mil at stake I am sure he wasn’t.)

I'd like to believe the new version was the original and then someone said, "What if he actually wins it?" But yeah, they're both funny. Thank God for TiVo -- I like watching that trophy hit his head over and over and over again. Hee!

I was so looking forward to the Hewitt/Federer match. I thought it was going to be exciting to watch. That was just no fun at all. The second set was good although I almost wonder if Roger wasn’t throwing some of those games just to make it more interesting.

I think it's hard to sustain that level of excellence. It was the same in the Agassi match. The difference is that, unlike Agassi, Hewitt doesn't really have anything to threaten Federer. It's just a really bad matchup for him now. The same thing happened in last year's final (to a much lesser extent).

But the only reason they had that ceremony starting at 4 pm was because there was no way football would be over at 4pm. And when a normal day at the Open starts at 11 am there is no excuse for people not to be able to be in their seats by 4 pm.
According to the usher at the Open the ceremony was always scheduled to start at 4pm. But I'm assuming they wouldn't have let McEnroe ramble on with the history of the world part III if it hadn't been for the length of the football game. It ended up OK for me because there was a delay on the 7 train and I didn't arrive at Flushing Meadows until 3:45 or so. Also, the day was scheduled to start at 1pm so it's not bizarre for the ceremony to be at 4 with a reasonable doubles match lasting less than 2 hours. This way you get people to leave their seats to have a $10 hamburger.

My theory is the ceremony was scheduled for 4pm, because either:
a. They knew even before the day began that football would go late somewhere
or
b. They meant for it to be on TV. I think folks would have appreciated it, quite frankly, especially older viewers.

Other thoughts:
It's also interesting to note that despite the fact that there seemed to be a lot of the usual Aussie suspects, the crowd was extremely pro-Federer. They only seemed to cheer Hewitt on when they wanted more tennis. So I guess Federer is picking up quite a following.

In the usopen.org transcript of questions to Federer someone asked him about the Roddick commercial and he gave some diplomatic answer but all I could think was that the reporter hadn't seen the new ending!

It feels like just a couple of days ago that I was noting all the signs that the US Open was coming. Now it's over. I'm sad.
Me too! It's such a build-up of excitement for me over the summer with the French, Wimbledon, and all the American tournaments leading up to this. It kinda feels like when you're reading a great book and you can't wait for the end because you want to find out what happens and then you feel let down because it's over. But last night I was able to spend some quality time with my ReplayTV watching all the shows I missed the last two weeks.

Yeah, that was where I was going with that. There is no way all the early AFC games will be over by 4--but, as others mentioned, did we need the post-games show? I think not.

They only seemed to cheer Hewitt on when they wanted more tennis.

Yup, that's where I was going with that as well. I just feel bad that it seems like Roger doesn't get a lot of support during the match because the crowd is busy trying to boost his unlucky opponent. Hewitt seemed tight, especially in the first set, and his game needs him to be loose. Hey Castallack, was Federer sprawling in his chair during the changeovers? That cracks me up. Must have been especially funny when Hewitt is his opponent since Hewitt starts concentrating so deeply that he bouces his knees and gets his game face on during changeovers.

No, really, there was a ton of support for him. People were calling out "Go, Roger" all over the place. So much so that it made me wonder if there was still lingering bad feeling over what happened with Hewitt and Blake in 2001.

Hm, I didn't really notice that but we were behind the chairs and umpire so it would have been harder to see from my angle. Plus I spent that time chatting with my SIL. It was a great seat during the match as it was on the shady side but it meant we were behind the players during the trophy presentation and had to look at the big screen then to really see it.

Question for those who watched: Who were the announcers and what was their take? I know McEnroe was there because I could see him in the CBS box but who else? And did they dog on Hewitt or just conclude that Federer was too good?
LT
The usual CBS crew: Enberg (LOVE! And I liked the "peepers" comment), Carillo (LOVE!) and John McEnroe (I go back and forth on him but I liked him yesterday--but I'm comparing to his idiot of a brother). As you know, Pam Shriver was doing the on-court interviews.

McEnroe noted that Hewitt was tight (he said it after I said it, I swear) but all agreed that Federer's A game is too much for anyone to handle. They especially enjoyed (meaning: laughed sarcastically) whenever Federer would 1) hit a mis-hit that would not only go in, but be a winner and 2) hit a winner from an impossible angle. During the 2nd set they remarked that Hewitt had opportunities that he couldn't cash in on and that even with Federer's 1st serve disappearing Roger was still going to win that set.

As for the sprawling, Federer sits in his chair and stretches he legs out in a "V" in front of him while sliding down in the chair so his butt is almost to the edge. It is as comfortable as I've ever seen anyone sit in those chairs. I think he is just stretching out his quads and keeping pressure off the knees, but it looks really funny.
Castallack
Thanks, LT. I guess that's about the way it went and I especially agree on the missed opportunities in the second set. It's funny how annoying the announcers seem but then you wonder what they were saying if you're actually there. I especially like the rapport between Carillo and McEnroe.

Re: Federer sprawl. That sounds really comfortable. I wonder if folks at work would mind if I did that in my office chair.

Good to see Roger being kind to ol Regis Philbin during their duel in table tennis this morning. I'd be interested in knowing what kind security is present whenever Roger (or Andy or whoever) carries/escorts the U.S. open trophy around.
OopsSorry

That's my favorite part of going to matches: watching the players on the changeovers. Some networks will replay the occasional glimpse that we miss during commercials, but I missed it yesterday. More reason to hate CBS! Heh.

I missed Regis. Should have expected he would be on. Damn. Anyone know how I can catch it? Ideas?

Did I also forget to mention that my boycott begins tonight at 12:35 stat? Hee!

One day, all tennis will be on The Tennis Channel. And everyone will have The Tennis Channel. And The Tennis Channel will have multiple channels to show all the matches. And then there will be world peace. And I'll get a pony.

Also, check back with me in 30 years or so because I intend to follow the tour around in my retirement. Anyone can feel free to join me. Of course by then, Andy Roddick will be doing commentary and there'll be so much to talk about.
Chesty LaRue
Darn- I thought that maybe Federer would be on Regis and Kelly but forgot to Tivo it. How did he do?

It looks like Letterman is going to be a repeat tonight which is very disappointing because he usually has the winner of the US Open on.

Looks like Federer is going to be on Charlie Rose tonight- woo hoo!

I did send in my request for Cablevision to get The Tennis Channel but without The Yankees playing tennis, I don't think it is going to happen. As for that retired tennis tour, you know I'm there (and by that point I will have finally found the guy who will come on all my crazy tennis vacations so he's joining in as well).

Thank you. I missed Regis (didn't even think of recording) so thank you for pointing this one out. Hopefully, they will let Roger's dry wit come through. There are moments when his answers to questions make me laugh out loud.

Could someone explain what happened in the two Roddick commercials? I zoned out whenever actual tennis wasn't being played. Federer is a freak of nature. It's unbelievable how easy he makes tennis look.

ETA: Thanks Castallack!

Oh good, then you guys can join me and Feliciano. And our pony. With world peace.

In both commercials, they had a little montage of Roddick having trouble bringing his prizes and trophies home with him on the plane (presumably after winning various tournaments). He blocks passengers boarding with a large novelty check, blocks the movie with a big trophy, gets smashed in by a large dish on his lap as the passenger in front of him leans back, and in the best part, a stewardess offers to help stow a trophy in the overhead bin, he looks doubtful as it's shoved in, and it falls out and clonks him on the head.

In Commercial A, he finally books an extra seat for the way back, we get the slogan "official card of confidence" and he looks contendedly at the trophy in the extra seat as he flies home. In Commercial B, he books the extra seat for the way back but this time the seat is empty as he looks philosphical. An attractive girl walks up, asks if the seat is empty and a smitten Roddick, says "No, no" and motions her to sit down. Now it's the "official card of silver linings" and the girl says, "Thanks. This guy back there has this obnoxious trophy in the way."

So I guess that guy would be Federer, heh heh. Can you tell I've seen this spot a bazillion times in the last week?
Helter Skelter
There are moments when his answers to questions make me laugh out loud.

Agreed.

Dick Enberg (not verbatim): "We know that you have a superb forehand and a dominating serve. What else is there?"
Roger Federer: "That's all I got."
