Nobody showed the end of the Davenport/clijsters match live? Not NBC? Not ESPN2? Hosers.
LT
Yeah, what was up with that? Did anyone show it?
Distant Sun
Yeah, what was up with that? Did anyone show it?

I believe NBC showed the end of the second set live at the very end of their coverage. I was watching some of it, but I had to leave before noon (EST).

noclam, I see your point. I'll just say that sometimes Clijsters chokes and sometimes she doesn't show up at all. Again, I don't think she's going to be winning any majors unless all the top players (except Mauresmo) get hurt.
TonyBoy123

Really! I missed the beginning of ESPN2 coverage due to the overlap in coverage(argh!) and was sure they would've picked up the match from where NBC left it. This is just ridiculous. They must know that fans were watching NBC, why wouldn't they show it just for continuity's sake. Also, wasn't this one of the most hyped match heading into the 4th round. We've been hearing about the possible match up since the beginning of the tournament. Way to fuck things up! I like Roddick, but I just don't need to see his match twice on 2 channels. ESPN was doing relatively well here and at the French, I certainly hope this is not a portend of things to come. Man, I can't wait for the US Open! Bring on USA and CBS already.
Distant Sun
Davenport/Clijsters is on Today at Wimbledon right now on ESPN2.
LT
I think ESPN2 is on the verge of showing the 3rd set now.

sometimes Clijsters chokes and sometimes she doesn't show up at all.

I have a different take on Kim. I think she gets nervous and stressed out. Full on heaving stomach and spagetti arms and it is impossible to play well like that. Of course, that could be considered choking, but I think of it more as a physical hindrance. I get stressed out for everything under the sun and she looks like me.

Of course, I wish I looked like her right now! How great did the outfits she and Lindsay were wearing look today? I want to buy Kim's.

ETA: Heh, Distant Sun and I racing to tell the masses to turn on ESPN2.
busybuzz
ESPN2 showed the end of the Davenport/Clijsters match right after NBC ended it's coverage.

I love Ferrero and wanted him to take the match to a fourth set but Federer was just too good, argh.

Federer's fiancee needs to get help for her addiction to hideous, unflattering, and oversized sunglasses. Everytime I see her she's got a new ugly pair on.

Did NBC show the Dent/Hewitt match? And was it a good one?
Juneboy
I was really pissed when I got home today and watched my tape of ESPN2's coverage.

They had said earlier in the morning that NBC would show the Dent/Hewitt match and pick up the Sharapova/Dechy match. Me being smart and all, figured that those two matches would fill NBC's two hour window and that ESPN2 would air the Clijsters/Davenport match. Chris Fowler even said that they would be showing it. So I only tape ESPN2's coverage and what the hell do I find when I come home this evening? I get the end of the match (at 3-2) then the live Federer match and then Roddick's taped 3-set clinker with Coria! Why oh why?

I know that Roddick is like a god to NBC and ESPN2, but my goodness, it's Clijsters/Davenport and I wanted to see the entire match. Even if NBC showed the first two sets of that match (which it sounds like it did), it doesn't make sense to tell the viewers one thing and then do another!
Chesty LaRue
Not one lick of coverage of Gonzalez today- not one iota. This fellow is the only one in the draw not to drop a set. And when he is on he is soooo much fun to watch.

No coverage of Grosjean either- who is considedered one of the top five grass court players in the world.

And didn't see while scanning though my Tivo covarge any of the exciting Myskina 3-set win.

***shakes fist at powers that be***

Whey don't they show parts of these matches instead of reshowing the Roddick match or Sharpova? ESPN- if I may make a request- if you want to show more of a straight sets win by a pretty player, could you have at least shown some of the unaired portions of the lovely Feliciano Lopez defeat of the adorable Mario Ancic. Us women like our eye candy too!
Distant Sun

I didn't see any Nalbandian/Gasquet either, and Gasquet has been getting some heavy pimping. But if they repeat an old Roddick game again over a quarterfinal match, well...I'm not sure what measures I'll take. But they will be violent measures.

I thought that was pretty standard for NBC and ESPN. Who needs to see live tennis when we can watch serves go fast, and don't forget the added bonus of hearing how great Andy is from PMac. Today the funny Roddick praise came from PMac saying that Andy was one of the two, aside from Federer, who set the bar for mens tennis. I wonder what bar Andy is setting?
Chesty LaRue

Yeah, when he's off it's crazy forehands everywhere! Brad Gilbert made a good analogy (I can not believe I just typed those words), Gonzalez is like a mircowave ...hot or cold. But when he is hot, frankly, he imo is a top five player- but his problem has always been staying hot.

On Radio Wimbledon they had Nick B. call in and he made a good point in that Gonzalez is finally getting control of his game and is becoming a real player, as opposed to someone with just some fantastic shots. It will be interesting to finally see him against Federer (they will have to show that right).

One thing I noticed today when Cliff and Brad were commenting about the Ferrero/Federer mnatch is that Cliff is just so much better at recognizing when someone played really well in a loss, as Ferrero did during the third set.

I didn't see any Nalbandian/Gasquet either, and Gasquet has been getting some heavy pimping.

Gasquet did show some of the talent that I saw during Monte Carlo, but his tiebreak performance was awful. He was getting frustrated too...he seemed more immature during the tiebreak than I have seen him lately.

Today the funny Roddick praise came from PMac saying that Andy was one of the two, aside from Federer, who set the bar for mens tennis.

So did he mean that there were three setting the bar or just Andy and Feds. PMacs and Brad Gilbert's continual humping of the legs of Roddick do get tiresome.
Bungalow Joy

PMac is on crack. Andy is a good player, especially on grass. But when it comes to actual results and potential I would put him behind Federer, Safin, Hewitt, and Nadal. The only bar being set is being set by Federer and Federer alone. Andy hasn't beat Federer in a long time, something that Nadal, Gasquet, and Safin managed to do this year. I wonder sometimes if all the hype and fawning isn't affecting Andy. He hasn't been getting the job done this year.
AgentX
So did he mean that there were three setting the bar or just Andy and Feds.

Sorry for the confusion. Two set the 'bar', Roger and Andy. Apparently. NBC and ESPN's constant Roddick praise is why I mute the television when he's playing, and occasionally when he isn't - and I'm a fan of Andy's!
Distant Sun
Today the funny Roddick praise came from PMac saying that Andy was one of the two, aside from Federer, who set the bar for mens tennis.

I mean, isn't it obvious that the world's #1 and #4 players are setting the bar for men's tennis? When Andy won the U.S. Open, he had as many Slams as Federer (and Safin). Not only that, his win was so long ago that, at the time, no Russian woman had ever won a Slam.

I've also come to briefly praise Brad Gilbert the commentator. I think he did an excellent job today explaining why Federer is so much better than Roddick. They're both great servers, of course, but Federer is a significantly better returner because he sees the ball so well and has superb hands. He noted that Federer had more aces in every match he coached for Roddick against him.

I know a lot of you don't like Federer, but the man is so amazing. I don't think there's any part of his game you couldn't describe as one of the world's best.
AgentX

I don't have a problem with them including Federer, because he is setting the bar. It was Andy who said this and it's a point I totally agree with. When PMac interjected that Andy was also setting the bar I thought it was unnecessary. It just felt like another attempt to make Roddick out to be better than results show. He's no where close to Federer, and if they were going to point out that the #1 and #4 players are setting the bar why not include the #2 and #3 players? Their ranks would indicate that they are doing better than Andy, so why not? This conversation wasn't relegated to just grass court tennis where Andy is a solid #2, so I just thought it was unwarranted praise of Roddick.
ShellsandCheese
I found this interesting:
Ominously for the other seven players left in the men's draw, the winner of the last four encounters between Federer and Ferrero has gone on to win the title at the tournament.

I was kind of surprised we didn't get much coverage of the Venus Williams/Craybas match. Especially after such a big deal was made of Craybas defeating Serena.

ETA--Jon Wertheim's midterm Wimbledon report shocked me, he had this to say about ESPN:
The caliber of "talent" is all over the map, but the coverage choice has been close to unassailable.

It is this kind of stuff that makes me hope that Roger repeats this year. Assuming that both Federer and Roddick make the final, I really hope Roger wins. I dont' even want to think about what would happen if Andy won. Nothing against Andy, even though I personally don't care for him. I wish PMac and Gilbert would realize they aren't doing Roddick any favors by constanting yapping about how good he is. I especially hate it when they do it when Andy isn't even playing, such as the Nalbandian/Gasquet match today.
Chesty LaRue

Yes, I agree. Grass court tennis is not the end all be all of tennis. I like all of the surfaces. Around 15 years ago when I was in elementary school clay was my least favorite but it is up there now for me with all of the other surfaces. I tend to agree with Mary Carillo in her great assertion during the French Open that clay court tennis has actually gotten better than it used to be with the advancements in technology and is the surface that has benefited the most from tech and I now enjoy watching it as much, and sometimes more than other surfaces.

You could say that Feds sets the bar about everywhere. Roddick helps him prop it up on grass and hard courts, with Hewitt also in assistance on those areas. Safin is holding the bar as well in terms of the regular and rebound ace hard courts, as well as indoor (where he may be the best), and Nadal holding up the bar for clay (although I think that he will soon be holding it up for the Aussie Open rebound ace as well as other hard courts).
Toodumb
Well, of course ESPN2 once again totally screwed those of us in the West Coast over. I know some of you are complaining about what they showed and didn't show in the first three hours of their afternoon coverage, but if there was any tennis at all, it was better than what I got....three hours of billiards. Yeah, you read it right, billiards.

By the time they were allowed to show tennis in the Pacific Time Zone, all the live tennis was apparently done. It sure would have been nice if they could have thus given a little consideration to us out here and done something different for us. How about showing us the last set of Davenport/Clisters? Or a little bit (if not a lot) of Federer's match, which hadn't even started when NBC signed off? Would that have been too much to ask? Afterall, they were already doing things different for the Left Coasters, how about going out of their way a little to make it up to us, just a teensy weensie bit? Nope, instead we got the Roddick match which we'd already just seen on NBC. Great job, ESPN2. Fuck you very much.
Harry24
three hours of billiards.

Good grief. In future, I'm going to keep this in mind before I do any bitching of my own. :-)

Has any of you guys tried Wimbledon Plus at Wimbledon.com? I'm thinking of those of you who had particular interest in matches that received scant coverage on either NBC or ESPN? I didn't read about it closely, but it seems that if you pay 7 pounds (about $14) you can watch two matches online (not live, though) each day. It's not something I'm interested in, but if anyone tries it, give us a report, okay?
Quent
ETA: Memo to NBC/ESPN, in the age of TIVO and DVR there is no need to show the same matches on NBC and then again on ESPN later in the day. Try showing a different match.

Oh, Wordy McWord. During every Grand Slam, I feel like I end up watching Roddick play the same match about 20 times every other day.

I love Kim, but was so glad to see Lindsay play so well today and stay positive. For my wife and I, the women's side of every Grand Slam for the last couple of years has been all about hoping that Lindsay can pick up one last GS title before she retires. But after she let Australia this year and the '04 USO slip through her hands, we have trained ourselves not to get our hopes up.

Am I crazy to hope that the networks will coordinate their coverage to actually show all of the quarter finals' matches?? Or will we get several hours of Sharapova and only the occasional score update on the others??
Distant Sun
He's no where close to Federer, and if they were going to point out that the #1 and #4 players are setting the bar why not include the #2 and #3 players?

AgentX, I was being sarcastic. P-Mac is an idiot if he thinks Federer and Roddick are setting the bar.

What will ESPN do if Petrova beats Sharapova?
Watts
Today the funny Roddick praise came from PMac saying that Andy was one of the two, aside from Federer, who set the bar for mens tennis.

What's funny about this is that when Andy was in the ESPN studio with Fowler and PMac during the Federer match, Andy said himself that Roger is the one who sets the bar. He said Roger is the measuring stick that all the other players look to. I really don't think that Andy thinks he is at the same level as Feds right now.

re: Coria/Roddick - I'm sure the two of them kissed and made up in the locker room.

Did my ears deceive me or did JMac say that Jim McIngvale offered Coria money not to play in the Masters Cup so Agassi could. I guess that revelation doesn't surprise me as much as JMac admitting it on tv. I think Mary and Jim were surprised he said it too.

I thought it was interesting that PMac was in the studio yesterday during the Federer match and then again this morning for Wake up to Wimbledon. I definitely like that better than Gilbert being there. And I have a feeling that Mary Jo and Pam do to. In fact, Mary Jo even alluded to it yesterday. It definitely makes things lighter.

Although it was painful to listen to Gilbert call the Federer/Ferrero match. I just can't stand him. Even though he occasionally says something funny or worthwhile, I can't get over how much he bugs me. I would've much rather heard Fowler, PMac and Andy continue to talk about the match. I like it when they have the players give their perspective about matches. It's interesting b/c they get to see things that we (or even the commentators) can't.

Sorry to all you fans of doubles.

This is from tennis-x.com:

...It's official: after the US Open, doubles matches on the ATP tour will be sets played to five instead of six, with a tiebreaker played at 4-all, and no-ad scoring (at deuce the next point is sudden death and decides the game). Why not just let a fan from the audience step in and play every third point, and have the players wear multi-colored afro-wigs and clown noses, just totally ruin the game?
GoddessMelissa
At this point in the Tournament, is there anyone left, either the men's or women's side, who if they were to win, it would be a huge upset?
I'm at the point, I 'd like to see someone other than the favorites win.
ghetto hood rat
Ooh, I don't know, on the men's side it seems boring as ever, but I like the women's matchups for the semifinals-I will make sure to watch them-I think any of the outcomes-Lindsay winning her last Wimbledon and hanging it up, Mauresmo finally winning one, Venus back on top, or Sharapova confirming the hype-those are all great stories. I think this has been a great tournament for the women.

And I am so glad that Andy left his Reebok contract-he looks so much better in Lacoste.
Distant Sun
I think J-Mac said it best today: "Venus is back!"
LT
In an effort to ensure that doubles competition on the men's tour does not clog up the schedule

ARRGHHH!!!!!!!! I am NOT the only person in the world who loves doubles and it should not be treated [Brad Gilbert]like the red-headed stepchild[/Brad Gilbert].

And, heh to Watts about Roddick being the one to say Federer was setting the bar and PMac being an idiot in his love for Roddick by adding Andy to the bar-setting. Did'ja notice how Andy seemed a little uncomfortable around PMac? I think he was afraid PMac was going to start fawning right there and then.
Chesty LaRue
Ooh, I don't know, on the men's side it seems boring as ever

I have to respectfully disagree. While I think that the women’s semis will be exciting I think that there are the chances for some good matches in the men’s quarters- in particular in the top half of the draw.

I think that the Hewitt/Lopez match could be a very entertaining match with very contrasting styles. You have Lopez, who has looked so incredibly graceful out there, likes to come up to the net where he has had great success this tourney , and has a really dangerous serve. On the other hand, you have Hewitt, who is fantastic on defense and likes the baseline. (though his serve has become more and more of an asset.) It will kind of be a case of the gazelle against the bull dog. I am really looking forward to it and hope that they show a good bit of it on tv. And I think that Lopez could pull of the upset.

As I’ve been jawing on these boards for the past couple of days- I can’t wait to see Gonzalez. While I’m expecting Federer to win, I think that there will be some exciting shots by Gonzalez- Federer even said in a press conference that Fernando will be very entertaining for the crowd.

At this point in the Tournament, is there anyone left, either the men's or women's side, who if they were to win, it would be a huge upset?

On the men’s side, essentially anyone but Federer or Roddick. But I’d have to go with Lopez and Gonzalez as the fellows who if they were to win would be considered the biggest, shocking upsets. Lopez would be the only Spaniard since 1965 to get the title. And the fact that Fernando would be able to hold his stuff together for a two weeks would be nuts.

On the women’s side, I think that if Mauresmo won that would be the huge upset. She and Kim always talked about as the best players on the ladies side who have not won a GS. But with Amaelie, the talk seems to be along the lines of resignation that she will never win.

I saw a bit of Wake Up to Wimbledon before work and I am further convinced that Chris Fowler and Sue Mott have the hots for one another. They are quite the sassy ones with one another and I had to giggle at the “inflatable man” talk this morning.
jimena
I cannot for the life of me stand Sue Motts. Why is she there? She's so horrendously annoying. Blah.

Well, I definitely do not think that the men's match ups are boring. Quite the opposite. I think that people that say (on the media specifically) that men's tennis is boring just haven't been really paying that much attention to it in the past years. In fact, I prefer men's tennis to women's tennis, and not just because I enjoy the eye candy. I like the power, I like the way they move, and for some reason the grunting doesn't bother me as much. Plus, I prefer substance over style. Women's tennis, although it has a lot of merit, gets overhyped, IMO. It's great competition, but I don't like that it's hyped at the expense of the men's.

Is it evil of me that I was rooting for Lindsay yesterday only because I didn't want Sharapova to become number one?
mooncreek
Amelie is too good not to eventually win a major - this one is the most likely with her game and only Venus is playing at her level so far this year. Wimbledon is the place for choke artists to finally gather themselves. Those who followed tennis in the mid90s need only hear the name Jana Novotna to have hope for Amelie. More recently, there was Goran.

I am rooting for an Amelie/Venus final - strange since I normally pull for Lindsay.

I think the reason people think men's tennis boring is because they don't see much of it. Just look at the Wimbledon coverage, it's mostly Roddick, followed by some Federer, and just a little bit of everything else. Watching that kind of coverage, you would believe that men's tennis was boring. But I know better.

I am totally rooting for Venus against Sharapova. That second set tie break against Pierce was fantastic tennis. If Venus plays like that on Thursday she can beat Sharapova. Venus played great today, served great, low on errors and low on double faults. My only problem is that if the final turns out to be Davenport/Williams, I won't know who to root for.
doctorwu
What will ESPN do if Petrova beats Sharapova?

The screen will go dark and they'll play "Nearer My God To Thee".
ghetto hood rat
Heh..I guess, since it bores me, apparently I am just not knowledgeable about men's tennis. Ok...I stand corrected.

I also liked watching that Venus/Pierce tiebreak. I will admit that I was expecting a blowout in either direction and when V won the first set running away, I turned away for a while. I am so glad that I tuned back in. It's nice to see Pierce doing well again-not that I think she will win a Slam again, but she's put herself back in the mix and that's always nice to see.

My feelings for Maria are starting to become similar to my feelings for the White Stripes. When they broke out in '02 I loved them and thought they were great, then they started to become overhyped and I get annoyed by the constant coverage, and I get turned off by it, then after awhile after the media find someone else to go on about I like them. I like the White Stripes' new album and that song Blue Orchid, and I'm sure I'll go back to sincerely rooting for Maria again in two years. If she wins this year it'll probably be three!

The hell?!?! What about eliminating the second serve while they're at it? And this has been approved? I don't understand. To actually change the format of the game to appease...who, the networks? Because I don't believe that kind of tinkering with the game, as Knowles put it, would attract the top players. This is ridiculous. And extremely insulting to the players.
Those who followed tennis in the mid90s need only hear the name Jana Novotna to have hope for Amelie.
She'll probably win her first major late in her career too, unless she makes a breakthrough soon.

I don't care about the men's side anymore. Federer will win. Yippee, woohoo. Nothing against him, but I just don't root for him except against Roddick. His game is so beautiful to watch though. Another superbly talented player with a gorgeous-to-look-at game in his prime was Rios. Where is he now?

As for the women, I believe Lindsay will take it. She's just been too good and I would love to see her win again before she retires. But then I saw the sheer joy and exuberance on Venus's face when she beat Pierce, and now I want her to win as well. She hasn't looked that happy on court in years! And of course Mauresmo needs to break through, although I don't know if I want her to win a major before Kim.

I guess I'm in an anybody-but-Sharapova mood. Like a couple of posters said above, I rooted for her last year but now I'm just sick of her. And the shrieking does not help at all. Too annoying. Anybody but Sharapova for me this year.

Yet another reason why I'll be rooting for Roger to repeat as Wimbledon champion.

NBC seems to believe that tennis fans are only interested in watching Andy Roddick play because he's American. A player's nationality has never determined my appreciation of his/her abilities or prevented me from becoming a devoted fan. My two favorite players over the last twenty years were Stefan Edberg and Patrick Rafter, both of whom just happened to be talented, modest, gracious and gentlemen to boot.
JuanitaSmi
NBC's Ted Robinson said that tomorrow at 10 a.m. they would be showing the Roddick-Grosjean match "in all time zones." So head's up you West Coasters.

Strange that again today, NBC showed a match in the afternoon that ESPN started showing in the morning. Sharapova/Petrova.

I've been taking a later lunch so I can see that hand-off to ESPN coverage at 1 p.m. and I was disappointed to see that ESPN was airing the Davenport match, which I listened to this a.m. But apparently they're on rain delay at SW19. If only we could get some of that rain in Detroit.

Oh poo, they just announced the order of play and the two matches tomorrow that I am most interested in (Hewitt/Lopez and Federer/Gonzalez) will be going on at the same time. So of course I won’t be able to see as much of the matches as I would like.

However, if either of them had been on at the same time as the Roddick match I guess there would be almost no chance of seeing a decent amount of those matches. Particularly since that is the match to be shown on NBC. Sigh...I hate these damn time overlaps and I imagine that there will be another overlap with the NBC/ESPN coverage.

I think the reason people think men's tennis boring is because they don't see much of it. Just look at the Wimbledon coverage, it's mostly Roddick, followed by some Federer, and just a little bit of everything else.

I agree, they tend not to show the more entertaining matches (though the last set of Federer's match yesterday was quite entertaining)- and also don’t allow the viewers to become more familiar with a wider array of players.

Heh..I guess, since it bores me, apparently I am just not knowledgeable about men's tennis. Ok...I stand corrected.

ghetto hood rat my comments weren't directed to you. Just because you find men's tennis boring doesn't mean you aren't knowledgeable. I was just talking about my own personal experience and the experience of some casual fans I knew. Part of the reason they thought men's tennis was boring was just because whenever they caught a match on TV it was usually Agassi, Roddick, and or Federer. Watching the same people play all the time could get boring. Up until about a year ago I thought men's tennis was boring too, but I now I prefer it to the WTA. I think it has something to do with all the hot guys :)

My two favorite players over the last twenty years were Stefan Edberg and Patrick Rafter, both of whom just happened to be talented, modest, gracious and gentlemen to boot.

Don't forget Hot! Especially Rafter, he was smoking, I wanted him to win Wimbledon so bad. I am glad he got his two USO's.

I also liked watching that Venus/Pierce tiebreak. I will admit that I was expecting a blowout in either direction

I think you're the second person to say this, but I can't see why. Venus hasn't been dominant in years, but she never gets blown out. That's one of the reasons I really like her. Yeah, that was an excellent tiebreak. Kudos to Pierce for getting it together.

I am rooting for an Amelie/Venus final

So am I. Even though they're both underdogs, I think they have a great shot to pull the upset.

If anyone but Roger wins, it'll be a huge upset. To be perfectly honest, I think Gonzalez probably has the best shot of anyone. If he can go for every shot and every line, he could do it. Not that that's at all likely, of course. Mentally, I don't think Roddick can do it—the advantage for Gonzalez is that he doesn't seem to think at all. Heh.

Marcelo Rios retired either last year or the one before. He was beautiful to watch, but nowhere near as much as Federer. Too bad he blew a great shot at a Slam.

Oh, I could never forget the hotness. I had the pleasure of seeing him play in person at the USO in 2001 right before he retired and it was a huge treat. He was wonderful with the fans.

I get the feeling that PMac is such a sycophant due to his fear that Roddick will suddenly decide that he no longer wants to play Davis Cup. I'm not particularly fond of Brad Gilbert, but as other posters have noted, he gives other players their due and rightly praises Federer's talents and achievements.

I saw the sheer joy and exuberance on Venus's face when she beat Pierce, and now I want her to win as well. She hasn't looked that happy on court in years!
I agree with the commentators. VENUS IS BACK!!!! I really really want her to win this. She's looked her best in ages, and she has a serious chance to win. I'd like to see her and Amelie in the finals. If only because I think that Amelie will exercise her patented choke and get blown out by Venus. I've never been a fan of Mauresmo. Of all the hard luck competitors, I'd rather have seen Clijsters get to the semis. Go Venus!

Meh. I'm just allergic to Venus. I've never liked her game or her personality. I don't like Serena's game either, but she has an earthiness I appreciate even if it might be inauthentic. Venus's hauteur annoys.

I would like to see Ms. Davenport win the ladie's title, I guess. She's been amazing me with her play throughout the tournament. I remember when I first saw her live, back when she was significantly heavier than she is now. I was just amazed at how hard and how deep she hit the ball off both sides and how well she volleyed (she used to be a really good doubles player, too). It's hard to believe it, but it looks like she's been hitting even harder in the past year than she did back then. This after all her surgeries and layoffs.

Topic? Yesterday PeeMac really pissed me off with his commentary in the Roddick-Coria match. Coria frankly played a very good match--he vollies quite well and could have given Roddick all he could handle if he had played a bit better on some key points. But if it weren't for Dick Enberg, you'd be totally in the dark about that because PeeMac apparently thinks it's unpatriotic or something to compliment a player from another country.

Hm, so if Roddick/Grosjean is the second match how can it be on live at 10am on the East Coast? I suppose if Hewitt/Lopez is a blow-out but otherwise they're going to have to show that match or the tail end of that match first.

I assume with both stations covering things we'll at least get to see a portion of all four matches, even if they're not all live.

Im rooting for Venus to win, but Sharapova will pull it out and I'll be miserable. Venus played well today but will have to play her best match in three years to win. Unless its really windy, Sharapova's game sinks a couple of levels in windy conditions. I'll keep a little hope alive but am somewhat resigned.

I cant see Lindsay losing to Amelie either, but each combination of finalists is intriguing, which you couldnt say in Paris. Imagine the Petrova-Likhosetvia final. Woof.

Im also in the Anybody-But-Sharapova group. If only to shut up Mary Carillo, Ted Robinson, Tim Ryan, and Chris Fowler, all who think she's Christ with a raquet and a semi-photogenic look. Shes not insanely gorgeous to me, I can see how she's somewhat cute, but my god, Fowler especially is CREEPY around her. and she looks about 15 on court with no makeup.

I usually enjoy most of the TV commentators but lately theyve been annoying the crap outta me. Primarily Tim Ryan on ESPN, this guy is a hardcore hack who never contributes anything that isnt mundane or pointless. And on NBC Ted Robinson is like that kooky loon of an uncle who won't shut up and thinks he can forsee everything and make clever comparisons but can't in reality. And dont get me started on Mary Carillo's negativity. She can trash Serena Williams til she's blue in the face, and I think to myself, does she not realize Serena, who Im a fan of and may be biased, has more Slams than Federer, Roddick, Mauresmo, Clijsters, and Sharapova COMBINED and yet still don't get bombarded with her verbal wrath. Instead all of those afformentioned players receive, mostly, unrequited praise and endorsement from her. OK enough ranting...Stupid TV people won't turn me bitter. Or bitter-er.

How many Grand Slam singles and doubles titles does Serena own in all? Isn't it about 12? However many it is Serena has definately earned some respect. For her game if not her attitude.

Maybe I don't listen hard enough but it seems to me that Mary Carillo is pretty negative about most of the players. All the commentators focus alot more on the negative then the positive. Except when it comes to Sharapova, Federer, or Roddick.

Serena has 7 singles, 6 doubles, and 2 mixed (with Max Mirnyi). She also won the gold medal in doubles in 2000. Venus has 4 singles and the same number of doubles and mixed (with Justin Gimelstob). She also won the singles gold medal.

Re: the praise for Andy. I think the reason that ESPN2/NBC tends to fawn over him a little excessively is because he is the top American man right now, and since Agassi didn't play, they need to have some draw to the Casual Viewer. I don't always agree with it, and I know they show him a little too much, but it's not like Andy has any say in the matter. I actually kind of feel bad for him because he's underachieved this year, and he's probably disappointed not having met all of the expectations.

I do like Grosjean (yes, even after what happened at the French this year), so I'll mind a little less if he beats Andy. Grosjean won my respect back in like 1999 at the French when he beat Moya or Rios or one of those guys who was attractive yet I didn't like. And that he kind of came out of nowhere when he did. As much as they show Andy, this should be good considering it's two guys who play really well on the surface.

Still hoping that Roger loses. The only plus is that there won't be a Federer/Hewitt final, which turned my stomach at last year's US Open, because I couldn't root for either. Normally I root against Roger, but Hewitt is a cocky bastard, and the only one who likes him in my family is my aunt (luckily, she's switched her favorite to Nadal lately). I really hope Hewitt loses tomorrow.

Federer's fiancee needs to get help for her addiction to hideous, unflattering, and oversized sunglasses. Everytime I see her she's got a new ugly pair on.

I liked her sunglasses in Miami, but then again, I like that look. And it's not that she's unattractive per say, but she's got really really bad skin. Though it may have been acting up due to the weather (it was pretty hot those two weeks).
