Oops! I'm terribly sorry. I seem to have done it again.
You see, the Matthew Rogers thread got full of people arguing about why other people voted for him (or didn't), which is a clear violation of our Show FAQ rules.
So I went to delete them, but there were so many of them that I got confused and deleted the whole thread instead.
I'm terribly sorry. But let's reduce the chances of this happening again by following forum policy and NOT generalizing about the attitudes of people who aren't you.
Thanks.
Man, I heart Shack. Thanks to ColdGreg for the new thread title.

I like Matt. A lot. For the same reason I liked Rickey last year, because he sang opera on camera and sang it well.
To me, that indicates training, a clue about music beyond the radio, most likely an ability to actually READ music. He's proven that he has at least control and intonation in his performances thus far. His sing out on Wednesday was really quite good, and his voice has a lot of uniqueness to it. He reminds me of Bill Medley, with the "blue-eyed soul" sound in the high baritone range (as opposed to Bill Medley's true bass.)
Call me a snob. I like singers to actually KNOW how to sing, as opposed to just doing it. Matt knows how, so he's got my votes. Should another person demonstrate an ability to actually USE the instrument correctly, I'll vote for them too.

Thanks for saying it so succinctly. I don't hate his voice and could listen to him without having my ears bleed, but his "personality" (which I think is being amped up for TV) is too smug and self-satisfied by half.
Considering that this could be the season of the "belting divas" a voice like his, that is on key and can hold notes, may be a nice palate cleanser. But everything else about him seems pre-fab and more than a little creepy.

"bag of ass"..! LOVE IT!
His voice is ass,too....if you ask me. My hair curled when he sang. It was even worse than his audition , when my hate was new.
How does he pick his songs? Are they the songs piped over the system whilst shopping in TJ Maxx for his fine threads? At least he isn't ruining anything that's actually good on its own.

I love you, Shack. I really do.
That being said, what bothers me most about Matt isn't so much his voice (because it isn't terrible), or the fact that he is, in no way, 25 (COME ON). It is because, when he was done singing, I looked at my best friend and said, "he'll go through - he'll be Josh Gracin. There's no war this year, so we'll vote to save the sanctity of sports."
And she said, "yeah, but he IS better than Josh."
Yuck. Yuck. Which means? He'll stay around longer?
I hate you Nigel. We can't blame The Seal anymore, but I am certainly blaming the live band. Damn you bass player!

I wouldn't go by the Roman brothers' opinions on any topic, but that's just me.
None of the singing on Tuesday night was "impressive", but Matt was certainly not the worst of the group. For a group of people who had months to practice 2 minutes of ONE SONG, they should all be ashamed.
That said, I think Matt did a fine job & I think he is sexy. My opinion.
Lisa should have gone through, because the "pancake waitress" looks like a zombie on prozac. Put on some lipstick and try a SMILE, hon.

Responding to
SoapBoxHero, on what kinds of things this asshole has said that make him a jerk:
- The most egregious example of them all, in his initial interview right before his audition, he thinks one of the things that qualifies him as a potential American Idol is that he's, among other things, an "American". Well, goody for him. So am I. So is an Asian, and a Middle-Easterner, and Camille, and Fantasia and a whole lot of other people who legally live in this country and have citizenship. What he should have said, and what I think he meant, was he's "white".
- He can't take any criticism at all, whether constructive or otherwise. None. It's always the judges' problem they don't get how awesome he thinks he is. Granted, the judges are tools. That doesn't mean that occasionally they actually get it right. Not everyone can be wrong.
- I didn't get as disturbed about his making-Simon's-head-bleed comment as others, but I think it shows the same personality flaw -- he thinks every word that comes out of his stupid, obnoxious mouth is cool, funny and endearing. And they are not. They. Are. Just. STUPID.
I'm sure there are more examples, but clearly I hate this guy, and I don't want to spend any more time thinking about him.

To me, "bellowing loudly in Italian" isn't opera. Do we know that he has studied the operatic literature and understands the meaning of the words that are coming out of his gigantic mouth?
I still will continue to call him a giant ass. He's partially responsible for wrecking my previous car (because of the traffic snarls that develop around the Seattle U-District on football Saturdays, I became lost on a side street and punctured my tire on a pothole. Being that I am such a dork, I drove around like that for a week until my rims were completely wrecked), so I have a legitimate reason to hate him. And I really do hate him with all of my heart.

I don't get any smug vibes from him at all. Just because he played football doesn't make him an ass automatically. I used to 'tutor' these types of guys in college in a Big Ten town. I've seen the best and the worst of em.
As for the head bleeding comment, it was definitely for the segue so I'm blaming that idiocy on Ryan Seacrest.

I've got to go with vallegirl on this one - his pleasant, though unremarkable voice will a welcome respite from the, ah, volume of some of the other finalists.
As for his personality, he's an ass, but he's at least a mildly entertaining ass. Since I watch this show primarily for entertainment, and no-one else (save Fantasia) has entertained me thus far, I hope he sticks around for awhile.

Well, this is either going to become a haven for Matty-haters or Matty-lovers. I believe myself to be a Matty-liker. I think a lot of what he says is in jest.
It may be that some people have hang-ups about him being a football player. I just heard a local DJ say "He's ok, I just hate football players." That's bunk.
He seems to know music well. He didn't use melismah as a crutch, which I appreciate. I'd love to see him sing some country. He seems to be on the edge of country and R&B.
What can I say? He reminds me of James Gandolfini, a man who exudes charm but I have no idea how or why.

Awww, Shack, you still crack me up, even when you don't mean to. Now I have to repeat myself. Matt is a jerk. But, he really didn't have a bad voice. Compared to the others. heh. I do agree that the "head bleed" thing was a segue to the commercial, but I think it sounded a little too sincere for it to be completely scripted. But, like I said previously, it will be entertaining to see him go on. Not so much for his performances, but he will be whining and arguing with the judges, and it could get interesting. Especially since none of the judges were happy with the fact that he got chosen. They wanted Lisa, but that's another thread.

True, the "head bleed" comment was one of those head-slapping, "doh!" moments, and made those of us that actually like the boy say "No! Bad Matt!" Interesting how it's gotten so much attention here, but was not mentioned AT ALL in the results show. Did someone say 'scripted lead-in for the Simpsons clip'? I thought so.

Is Matt really an intolerable jerk? That will be revealed during the season. I will say that there are some indicators, though. His insatiable love for attention is one - I just wonder to what extent he'll let that love of attention take him.
As for his voice, I don't think it's bad. I think if he calms down and focuses, I think he could really pull off the blue-eyed soul; i.e. Michaels McDonald and Bolton.

Heh! Me too! I thought of that today when I went to the Idol site, and I think you just hit the nail on the head as far as why I like him. He's actually like James Gandolfini during his Sesame Street appearance. Maybe a little afraid of giant talking vegetables.
What he should have said, and what I think he meant, was he's "white".
I did not get that vibe at all from him. Seemed to me like he was just grasping at something to fill in the space between thinking of a witty/decent/acceptable answer. Plus, wasn't he the last audition of the day? Seems to me either he heard every other contestant answer the question all day, or was just floundering for an answer to an otherwise, IMO, stupid question.

I do not hate this guy. Nor do I like him. He's just kinda...there...IMHO. But let's face it, he was not the best of the bunch that night. I'm not sure why he was able to beat out Lisa, but some quirk of the voring allowed that to happen. And you could tell from his shocked response that he didn't really anticipate being put through.
That said, I have to wonder if 19Evil "worked" the numbers so that he could be passed into the round of 12. Because his reaction to Simon was controversial, if nothing else. And this competition really needs that to keep it interesting.

A new Matt Rogers thread a week... that's all we ask.
I still think he's an ass, but he did demonstrate some modesty and self control on the results show. I thought his little dialog with Ryan on whether or not he thought he would be voted in was very tactful and restrained.

I not only like Matt but voted nonstop for him (shut up - I never voted for Clay, that must count for something) and I was still surprised that he made it thru to the top 12. I thought for sure when it was down to him and a female, the female (can't remember her name) had a lock on it. YAY for being wrong.
I know his song choice was definately not the greatest but dorky football player or no, boy can sang. Plus, the whole teetering on a fine line between funnyman and raging psychotic? Gets me everytime. It's nice to have an unstable source of lust in your life when it's no closer than a tv screen (saves time & money on restraining orders and such).

That much being said, Matt kind of reminds me of a guy I went to high school with. Of course, I'm 40. Which means the guy I went to high school with is also 40. Which is really, in a roundabout way, what I meant. Matt's 40.
I just think given his barely supressed assholish attitude so far, I'm quite curious as to what he'll be like when he
really gets criticized, later on in the competition. I mean, after all, he is in a coveted spot in the final 12 - he'd better be able to take the heat without acting like he's due for anger management counseling every two seconds. And I think that's what I don't like about him, really. His voice is just all right to me. But the attitude? The 'tude gets bigger and bigger everytime he's on camera, IMHO.

Since it's not likely they'll bring back Bre for the Wildcard, I'm on the Matt bus this year. 19's so intent on cramming a teenybopper down our throats, and heck, even when I was in high school, I hated Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. So give me option B, who seems to be the love child of James Gandolfini (thanks SoapBoxHero) and Tom Jones.

I guess I'm pretty much alone in my like for him. But I'll live. Maybe I just like the singers that are unpopular here, but popular elsewhere, who knows? (After all, I hate Fantasia, Camile, and Diana).
Anyway, I think he has a good voice and a good personality. He came off well on Seacrest's show today. More humble than on AI -- and he admitted that there was strong talent in the last group and the other group and that he and Camile were basically the "underdogs". (Of course, I'm sure someone will screw this to make it sound ass-y, but it didn't).
Of course, I like college football too. Maybe that's where I went wrong.

It's actually 25, but I have a feeling that, unless mental and emotional age counts, many Rose Bowls have passed since this guy was 25.

What burns me is that Lisa got all this flack for her looks and Matt is celebrated for looking like a 40 year old plumber. Double standard.
Something from the deleted thread: the women looked very unhappy with Matt's win, far more bitter than just the usual loserness. I never saw that in previous years. Everyone was usually hugging and dancing and "I'm so happy for you." Do you think he sexually harassed any of them? Not physically, but just obnoxious fratboy comments. Of course, he probably thinks it was innocent flirting, courtship of comely lasses if you will.

I didn't see anything wrong with how Lisa looked either. I'm sick of the expectation that every white female singer is supposed to have at least as good of a body as Madonna, and a bit of cosmetic surgery to correct any bit of the bod that isn't perfect. Heck, the biz probably wouldn't sign Janis Joplin today unless she agreed to get a nose job first.

Nobody remembers Matt Rosebowel because he played for three different teams: first at Citrus Junior College, then at Iowa for a year then at Washington for a year. He milks that benchwarming Rose Bowl glory ad nauseum because that's all he has.
From a local news article:
A native of Arcadia, Calif., Rogers played only one season at UW after transferring from Iowa, where he had played in 1998. After sitting out the 1999 season, he was a backup guard on the 2000 team. Although he never started, he played a key role as one of two reserves
