A place dedicated to sartorial tragedies such as Catie's leg-warmers, Camille's glow-in-the-dark neon green heels, Tyra's neck-tie belts, Shandi's tablecloth skirts, the list goes on and on. Fishnet stockings, belly shirts, microminis, scoop dresses, corn-rows....Feel free to discuss.

I loved it when Catie got called out for her "down by the docks" attire!
And while I think that Tyra looked really, really goofy in that final scene this week, I do not believe that cornrows are ho-ish or even a fashion faux-pas for that matter. I think that Tyra could have picked a better hairstyle at that moment, but conrows in and of themselves are still a very accepable and revered hairstyle where I live. But when done incorrectly, without care, or on the wrong person, like many other styles, they just don't look right.
We're on the same page, Madeline Ashton. I got the ho/haute thing, but when I read that last list of undesirable items, that one jumped out at me. Thanks for taking the time to expound.

I don't think some of the clothes the girls wear are ho-ish, it's just a play on words (although "haute" is spelled differently). I think it's hilarious how Catie was called a hooker because she was wearing leg warmers and high heels, and later on in the elimination room Tyra was wearing leg warmers and high heels, so I guess she was tuning out what the guy said about personal style. Kind of off topic, but Tyra was on the Ellen Show yesterday and she said when Catie was called a hooker, it made her wonder what she looked like in her one piece jean outfit. She told Ellen she looked like the girls' "den mama," with her forced black ghetto girl voice, of course. I don't think cornrows look bad at all, but they just look weird on Tyra. The shape of her head paired with that bizarre red hair color (that looks spray painted on when you see her scalp) just scared me. And the ripped t-shirt, denim skirt (with neck tie as a belt?) and leg warmers didn't help things. She didn't look like a ho, she just looked like a homeless woman who got a shopping spree at the Salvation Army.

I'm still recovering from Camille's salute to the Jamaican Flag. I mean, could she have picked a more Beauty Pageant way to represent Jamaica? If her family was from Holland would she have worn wooden clogs and put a windmill in her hair? "It's a Small World After All" just kept going through my head after that scene.

Hee! Camille tries so hard to impress the judges, but each and every time she fails miserably. The outfit would have been fine if she didn't give a dissertation on every article of clothing she had on. Well, that, and if she didn't have a Jamaican flag sticking out of her butt like a toilet paper dispenser.

Those day-glow green pumps Camille has are pretty hideous too. And the salute to Jamaica was not the first time she's worn them. I distinctly remember her having them on in the make-up challange where Shandi fainted.

Are green glow-in-the-dark shoes "in" now? I recall that someonee (was it Yoanna?) had some on in her Steve Madden photo. Perhaps they let them keep the shoes and CaMEille keeps "borrowing" them. I kinda hope this is the case so that means there's one less pair floating around.
I blame Beyonce for the hooker heel trend. But, bear in mind that my shoe of choice today is Timberland boots, so honestly? I'm no fashion maven.

I thought Ugg boots were still the only sort of footwear on the hot sheet. Or is the Ugg five minutes up? Like, apres Sundance, only way to go is down?
That Cujo person who looks like Steven Tyler and purports to be a designer or fashionista of some sort has promised to tell us what the Shoe You Must Have For Spring is on tonight's Entertainment Tonight. If it's glo-green pumps, I'll be sure to report back.

I think the shoes Yoanna's Steve Madden shoes were snakeskin and not that bright, whereas Camille's looked like life-sized Barbie hooker pumps in the most eye-searing color imaginable.
Has anyone noticed the girls and their affinity towards wearing their shirts around their shoulders and not on top of their shoulders? It was distracting me in the past few episodes, but in the last one, at the Betsey Johnson runway test, Sara, Mercedes, Jenascia, Shandi, and Catie all had their shirts hanging down and off the shoulder. This could mean either they weren't wearing any bras (like Jenascia, whose breasts were flopping around like fresh out of water catfish) or that they were wearing strapless bras, which I doubt they would bother considering the time alotted to them. I don't think that it's really slutty looking to do this, I think it just looks stupid and sloppy. Everytime I see them in shirts like this, instead of thinking "sexy" I'm thinking "Naomi Harper from Mama's Family" and makes me wanna scream, "Pull your shirt up!"

It's weird, because I think the person that makes the most fashion mistakes on this show is "America's Top Model" herself, Tyra. Bad, hair, bad, makeup, bad clothes. Yes, girls, THIS is what you're aspiring to!
Oh and Catie not only looked like a whore, she looked like a whore from 1986.

I like that description. I'd only ever heard them referred to as "come fuck me" pumps.

As a "high fashion model" Tyra's favourite phrase, she should know how to accentuate and decentuate certain features.
Cornrows can look very cute on a lot of people... but not people who have large faces, and especially broad, wide foreheads.
Did she even realize the legwarmer/high heel thing in the SAME EPISODE as Catie getting knocked for it? As much as I'm starting to dislike Catie, I honestly thought she pulled off the look better than Tyra did. I think Catie's hair suited the outfit more... it's more of a fun, funky haircut, whereas Tyra was TRYING to achieve that look.
Phew. Done with the dissertation.

AngelofMusic, I noticed that, too! She did the same thing with Xiomara! Tyra showed a picture of herself wearing a bikini top with a ball gown skirt, using it as a prime example of one of her fashion disasters. Yet when Xionara walks out wearing a version of the same theme, Tyra praises her for her fashion innovation.
My favorite 'ho'ssociation happened without clothing (no, not like that!). In one episode, one of the girls (Catie?) retrieved the incoming Tyra Mail from a bowl brimming with one dollar bills. Should we assume the girls are doing a little waitressing on the side?

So what were those things they were wearing at the end of the video: high-waisted fishnets or bodysuits? It looked like they came up past the waist, but it didn't look like there was anything on the girls' shoulders holding them up. Maybe it's a two-piece dealie with regular fishnets and a matching cummerbund, because there was no seam up the back?

Few observations about "The Girl Who Cheated:"
Did anyone notice that during the post-orgy Shandi commiseration party, April bends over towards the camera and is wearing pink fluffy snow boots? Please tell me I wasn't the only one who saw this. Make up your mind. Either you're hot and therefore must wear a sheer nighty and thong ensemble, or you're freezing and therefore must wear Abominable Snow gear. The Aprilbot really suffered the most during the episode in terms of 'ho-style', all thanks to Mr. Fairchild. Or rather, she suffered because she spun around whatever he said to make her own deluded sense of style. Every outfit she had on for the rest of the episode was a mini and boots. I guess "showing leg" equates to "showing vagina." Mercedes, I believe, was wearing a bizarre straight-jacket styled shirt at their house at the beginning of the episode. It was green and had all these peculiar twists and turns and zippers and buttons and confetti and string in the back. What was up with that? Shandi looked divine, if not a little bit too scarecrow. (OT: Why were her bed and sheets wet after she had sex? I'm trying to convince myself it was because she had just come out of the jacuzzi, but...ew.) Was Yoanna wearing a cinnamon bun on the side of her head when the Italian boys first came over?
skagirl77
Mar 19, 2004 @ 4:21 pm
Oh, the sexy thong & snow boots were definitely discussed on the episode thread. That was more than I needed to know about her Italian PJ party.
But that flower headband that Yoanna put on her head? It reminded me of parents who put baubles & head bands on their babies when they still have no hair. Kuh-razy. Kuh-razy. I am all for having fun when you have short hair when young (for the last 8 years, mine has usually been pretty short) because you have the excuse of spiking it or putting some outlandish barette or bows. But that thing was worse than Sarah Jessica Parker's crazy flowers on SATC last year. Maybe it was some sort of honing device for mating.

Speaking of short hair, how many times has Yoanna's hair grown/gotten shorter/grown back into a peacock/ been slicked back in her pink-scarf interview? I feel indebted now to her and she must win; we've seen her go through everything in that room. She's laughed, cried, cackled, b*tched, been rained on, gone to sleep, got caught in a tornado in that confessional. Do you think she's wearing any pants for all those confessional days? I wouldn't bother if I were she. Or perhaps she's wearing a dickey?

BWAH! Maybe her hair moves with the position of the sun?
However, given the haircut, if they had to re-do any interviews & had her come back into the room for follow-up, that hair may not have reacted exactly the same way. Shandi's is easy to keep consistent what with the part down the middle, but I have noticed more/less frizz in Mercedes' hair too.

Bump. (Yes, this thread is packin' its bags, y'all and...OK, I'll just stop right there.)
Season 2 was *way* more focused on, er, "personal style" than Season 1, but there may still be some memorable outfits that spark discussion. As usual, perhaps many of them are worn by Miss Tyra, such as that bloated corsage from Episode 1.2. A sight which almost made me homesick for some flourescent green stilettoes.
Oh, and I hate everything Nicole wears. Everything. Including her blank looks (no, I'm just not believing Wyclef is the "best time ever" or whatever). And her hair which has an interesting role in Episode 1.3 is just [Catex]bleccch![/Catex]

So true, but I'm drawing a blank right now. (The lack of personal style may have something to do with that.)The "hay-spa-tu" (hee!) shirt and the poor, picked-on fake kente cloth hat overpower all other clothing events, good or bad, in my mind.

I believe YaYa wore one too, an even shorter one, also with the strings everywhere. That was one stringy, ragtag bunch, and there's a time and a place to be sloppy--Tokyo isn't really that place. You know how New York really dresses sometimes? Well, Tokyo is no different, except they really, really, really dress--and do it so very well. When I visited a couple years ago, there were plenty of kids in hiphop and crazy-ass goth lolita and so on and beyond of course--I don't know what the hell they are wearing right now in Tokyo, where the future is happening--but even that kind of extreme look is so beautiful compared to a wifebeater and cutoff skirt. The hamsters really could step it up about a zillion notches.
I'm sorry. I will apologize to the skirt.

I like Norelle's purple tee-shirt with the Boston Terrier on it. I actually have the same shirt, and underneath the terrier, it says "Le Petit Monstre," although the words are right under your boobs, so you can't really read it. I think she looks very cute in the shirt, and I like her fun, child-like style and I don't care what Grimley (tm Potes) says!
Additionally, that fake kente cloth hat? How would anyone even begin to accessorize it (like the judges wanted during that challenge) without making it look overly ethnic? An impossible task!

I'm going to try to do a rundown on all the girls and their fashion:
Magdalena: though we only saw her for a millisecond, the bathingsuit she picked (which she thought was "dope") was cute...but didn't work for her body at all! She should've picked something with less cut-out parts in it to flatter her figure.
Leah: All I remember of her fashion was that Tyra et al thought she was too "soccer mom." Part of the reasons why they should pick girls who have that model look, and cut them for more legitimate reasons: bad attitudes, non-photogenic, don't wanna be there, etc.
Julie: Julie's look was kinda varied. One minute, she lounged in J-Lo sweats, the next minute she added a little Indian flair to her outfits (I really loved that piece of jewelry she wore in the part in her hair), and the next she's "showing off" (loved the giant sunglasses). The only time I didn't like her style was when they had to "turn the heat up" (their makeup challenge) and look "dressed to kill." She looked very cutesy-wootsy in a red sweater dress with Christmaslike snowflake patterns on it...not edgy at all.
Kristi: I didn't think she really had much style other than that flag dress. Burn the flag!!
Jennipher: It looked like her wardrobe was very limited...the only thing I remember her wearing was a (cute) black sleeveless turtleneck.
Kelle: She can't help it that her pants are Gucci!
Cassie: We know your name is Cassie...please don't wear wifebeaters with your name on it and coochie-cuttin' drawers ever again.
Toccara: Though she could've put more effort into her "personal style" challenge, I thought her style was pretty decent. I liked her denim jacket. I also liked that dress she wore (to her audition and the makeup challenge), but if I had seen it a third time, I suggest that she do some shopping.
Nicole: Nicole's personality came out when she came out in torn hip-huggers, a wifebeater with a skull and crossbones on it, leather, spikes, and the tiara with the leather cap. Awesome.
Norelle: Her style may be cutesy, but I do like some of her stuff. Her accordion skirt is adorable, and the flats she wears are cute as hell. I can never seem to find a flat shoe that doesn't look clunky and boxy.
Amanda: I think I already summed it up a few posts ago with "po' couture."
YaYa: I can't stand her stank-ass attitude, but I love her style regardless. Ironically enough, I think her "hay-spa-tu" shirts remind me of the font that Pedro Almodovar uses on the covers of some of his DVDs (like the way All About My Mother was styled...reminded me of the shirt she wore with the five different words on it). Although his are Spanish and hers Portuguese.
Ann: really doesn't care about fashion, or how she carries herself. The Kool-Aid stain on her shirt was a disgrace.
Eva: another "I hate her attitude, but love her style" person. That purple top she wore on "personal style" day was cute with the snaps on the shoulders. The skirt she wore during the personal style challenge was kinda short but the outfit was cute as hell. And though she acts like a "li'l devil," she looked so angelic in that white camisole with matching flared pants she wore in one episode. I don't think there's anything that Eva can't wear. (Except her "lucky lady panties" look like "granny lady drawers.")

Leah: All I remember of her fashion was that Tyra et al thought she was too "soccer mom."
I don't remember too much of Leah, and she was eliminated way too early for me to really form an opinion of her (I think I would have liked her if she'd stayed), but I did scratch my head over what Tyra meant by "soccer mom." Watching last week's clip show, I got the impression that Leah had a very high-school, mainstream-trendy, junior-department, Delia's/Claire's Accessories look. I remember she had a pink newsboy cap and those fake pearls (didn't the judges say they were "too secretary"?), which they have racks and racks of at Claire's. Her overly and weirdly groomed eyebrows were also a little too high school. She doesn't seem to have developed an individual sense of style. Of course, this is based on one episode, but funnily enough, Leah's the only one whose style I've noticed enough to form an opinion.
It could be that this is what they meant when they said "soccer mom." I interpret "soccer mom" as polo shirts and tapered jeans.

Wow. Just watched the first epi of Runway, and what strikes me is how good those models were compared to the hamsters on ANTM. Jeez. They suck! They're too short, they can't walk, they aren't well proportioned. Funny that models are a dime a dozen in NYC, yet ANTM can't seem to find 14 for a show.
Day-um those models on Runway looked like models from the moment they stepped out.
The couture has been non-existent this season in favor of over-done styles (thank you Small Orange Man) that have detracted from the featured products. Nothing like those styles appears on the pages of Vogue or Elle.
Is anyone else wondering what this show is about? It doesn't seem to be about fashion. Or modeling.
It's some odd yet compelling amalgam of Real-world style Drama, self-abasement, absurd pseudo-challenges, product placement and worship of Tyrant.

franabanana, those are my exact complaints about ANTM's evolution. I used to watch the show for the shoots, with the drama as added flavour. Now it's all drama, with an occasional bit of "modeling advice" reminding the girls not to spread their legs too too far. Which would be fine if it were still as entertaining...but for me, not so much.

I remember them making a huge stink about her jeans being cuffed over her boots, while since that incident, I've seen nothing but girls wearing cuffed jeans over sleek boots. I have to agree to disagree, vicesick. I think it's jet lag or something, but the girls look WORSE than they did in NYC. Japanime looks like such a gorgeous subculture to be a part of, and all they did was roll their eyes at it (with Eva saying she was just going to throw together outfits that just look "stupid" together), and they didn't even try to throw together a fashionable look. The designer (who had the cutest accent, IMO) seemed really friendly and gave good advice, and those girls didn't take it at all. Seeing the Japanese youth with the brightly colored hair and outfits full of life was awesome. The girls could've had fun with it but didn't.
YaYa (in her Japanime street outfit in front of the panel) looked "street" and stank to boot.
ETA: I rewatched Julie's elimination episode, and didn't see Ann wearing a goofy skirt anywhere. But (let's not forget we can rib on the judges' fashion here) Janice was wearing this black gown in that episode that was cut in this kinda criss-cross design, with her old, saggin' saline bags popping out of it. You could see her huge tan meets white patches on them...ew.

WTF-in Hell is up with these extremely tacky message tee shirts the hamsters keep wearing?!?
So far we've seen, in one episode alone:
Sarah: 'Fashion Victim'
Michelle: 'Wardrobe Malfunction' (that is so 2004 y'all)
Christina: 'Today was a total waste of hair products' (how they managed to fit all those words on that narrow Head Louse I'll never know!)
And we've already seen Lluvy's 'Me So Corny' tee, but I have to profess my love for that because it's so freakin' meta.

I dunno? What's up with them? What's wrong with them is what I'm really asking. :D I love geeky tees. If I had a real job, along with books, that's all I'd spend my money on!
Granted, these are
fashion geeky, but what can you expect? I mean, seriously. It's like hatin' on a Trekkie for his tee with the Enterprise on it that says "Sweet Ride" (which, incidentally, I bought my boyfriend for Valentine's - he, in return, bought me a tee that said "I don't need Mario to save me"). Just 'cause it's not what
you geek on, doesn't mean it's fashion-tragic. :D (Now, if they wore these tees to interviews, yeah, hate on!)
Of course, "Today was a total waste of hair products." stuck me as being more Wal*Mart than fashion-follower, but at least their teeshirts (to me) amusingly are about what they're there for.
As for ragging on this season's fashion, why not start with
Brandy's profile outfit? Seperately, those two pieces of clothing could be worked with to be awesome, but, really.. Faux-Thai pants, heels, and a long-sleeved shirt with
puffy shoulders? Maybe that shirt with a cameo-choker and some sort of skirt (either long with wicked slits up the sides, or short and possibly leather).
