Happened to catch this on Adult Swim last night as I actively tried avoiding sleep. I have no idea if this was just a pilot or it's an ongoing series (and if anyone has any info I'm eager to know).

It's kind of a spoof on the old Jonny Quest cartoon, and it's look is very similar. It's about Doc Venture, his two less-than-wordly sons, and the unbalanced Race Bannon-type character of Brock Sampson (voiced by Patrick "Puddy" Warburton).

I really loved it. Has anyone else had a chance to catch it?
Lantern7
Dang, and I was planning on starting this one.

To the best of my knowledge, this was a pilot, and new eps air in March. Yes, it's JQ on crack, but it does show promise. "Quick, Dean! Let's deploy the J-U-D-O!" Cue ineffectual karate chops.

The one potential drawback? Using JQ to spoof might work in the short term...like the pilot for "Harvey Birdman" and the custody battle. Long-term? I don't know...

ETA: "She touched me where I make sissy!" "Super run-away!" Maybe this show's got legs after all.
Amberosia
I think I'd have to say that my favorite part was when Brock killed the alligator that stowed awy on the plane, and turned to go into the UN building covered in blood when the guards told him he couldn't take a weapon inside. So Brock looks at the guard and says "Take it from me", the first guard looks at another who shakes his head telling him not to do it. BWAH!
Hasbro
Last I remember Venture Bros was slated for February. I loved Puddy (I know it's Wharburton, but he's now and forever Puddy,) as the borderline psycho Race Bannon.

Anyone else notice Dr Venture pitching a tent in the hotel room?
Hasbro
Adult Swim reaired the pilot and new episodes are scheduled starting Aug 8th (sorry to double, but it's been months)
muchsarcasm
I saw a commercial last night advertising the series premiere on August 7th. It was 30 seconds of Brock fighting and looked pretty damn cool.
Lantern7
Yay! Brock gets to be..."thorough"!

Zap2It.com article on The Venture Bros.
Dr. Girlfriend? Orange County Liberation Front? Sweet!
cinaea
Hee! Fun article. I adored the pilot--the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend were proof that there is more to the show than just the delightful Brock.

It airs this Saturday at 11:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., and repeats on Sunday night at 12:30 a.m. I am not missing this series!
Zerowing
It makes use of a lot uncomfortable and politically incorrect humor, but it's funny as hell!

I saw Adult Swim's other new show, Stroker & Hoop, meh. I wasn't that impressed, but Venture Bros, this one is a keeper in my opinion.
Lantern7
Why isn't this on Sunday nights? Must be because it takes the whole 30 minutes.

In brief: adventures in Mexico. Dr. Venture makes an ass out of himself and loses both kidneys. The Monarch (formerly Monarch Butterfly) kidnaps the boys and relates his origin to the husky-voiced Dr. Girlfriend. And Brock (dubbed "the Swedish murder machine" by Monarch) gets to beat and run over various henchmen.

Damn, this whacked-out "Jonny Quest" retread is gonna be around for a long time.
john mora
The first scene of the show has got to be the gayest thing I've ever seen on Cartoon Network. God bless this show.
Gnosis
While not as good as the pilot, I definitely enjoyed it a lot. I love Brock (and Patrick Warburton is perfect voice casting for the part).
MegaJ
Only caught the first minutes of this, and switch to the 'O Grady episode I missed. Really, really pretty.

A repeat will air 12:30am, in Baby Blues slot. Plus, AS inserted a comedy infusion in the Action Block, GRR.
Clockstomper24
Tonight's episode was actually #9...CN still dosen't want to air any non-anime show in order.
VWBug82
While this ep was better then the pilot, I still don't find this show very funny. Why couldn't we have gotten more Brak Show's instead?
Zerowing
Well the Monarch is actually funnier and more interesting than Doctor Venture and his two dumbass sons.

But Brock, he's pretty damn near indestructible. When I see Brock taking all those damn tranq darts and not go down, I'm reminded of a very funny line Cobra Commander said about Sargent Slaughter from the G.I. Joe cartoon...

"That man has the constitution of a Vending Machine!"

As long as the show focuses on Brock's over-the-top violence and the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend, I'm totally on board with this show.
LiberryLady
Did anyone else get a crazy-assed cartoon "Tick" vibe from this show?

(And not just because of Puddy.)

I loved it. My son Tivo'd it, and after we watched the intro I made him stop so we could call in the rest of the family to watch.

What did Dr. Venture call the Day of the Dead? "Your Crazy Christmas Dead People Day"? That really made me laugh, because I work in a school library, and every year I put up a Dia De Los Muertos display and carefully explain its significance. Mebbe this year I'll just go with Dr. Ventura's shorthand.
Clockstomper24
Ben Edlund, creator of The Tick wrote scripts for VB, hence the "Tick-ish" tone.
Lantern7
I'm guessing the ep was aired first, still Monarch was in there. I'm also guessing continuity isn't gonna be a hang-up with this show.

I'm also guessing that Dr. Venture originally found Brock in the Yellow Pages under "Escorts," but Brock was actually a bodyguard. Doc pays Brock, Brock takes the money and deals instant deal to anybody who harms Hank and/or Dean.

I think "going sickhouse" should be an everyday expression. Ditto with "Walking Swedish murder machine." Is "Samson" a Swedish name?
Skyblade
I always figured it for Jewish.
muchsarcasm
That was some funny stuff: Big, fat luchadors at the poker game. That henchman who sounded like Ray Romano ("Man... this suuucks!"). The fact that Dr. Venture had to count the number of kidneys he lost. Hopefully enough people are watching it.
cinaea
The kidney-affair was apparently the second time it had happened to him--he exclaimed, "Not again!" He needs to be less careless with his (beautiful new) kidneys.

"What was that?!" "El Chupanebre. Those things are all over Mexico. Quit screwing around." Awesome!

I thought the henchmen were great, and I love that they put Speedy out of his misery.

How great was Monarch's flashback? "The Summer of the Monarchs!" It was all so overblown. "New Jersey's famed Pine Barrens." As it's mostly made up of PINE, you can see why the leaves wouldn't be turning orange in the fall. That's just excellent. Oh, and the fact that they were flying out of Newark? It's the little details that made it so priceless. "It was like losing my parents a second time! Only quieter. So I walked to the nearest highway, caught a bus back to New York City, and collected a huge inheritance."

Monarch trying to love the boys ("Which one of my special boys wants fresh, hot cookies?") was awesome, as was his insistence on being Dr. Venture's arch nemesis. "Under-Bite"? Hee!

Helper didn't add much to the episode. I don't think it was in the pilot, so I hope they find a funny way to use it in other episodes.
savetheyak
The first scene of the show has got to be the gayest thing I've ever seen on Cartoon Network.

More like the gayest thing you've ever seen in a cartoon.

This didn't have a lot of jokes, but the jokes that were there were fine. Nothing rolling on the floor worthy, but still good. I loved Doctor Girlfriend (her deep voice cracks me up) saying,"We agreed when we went into this relationship we didn't want kids." Is she Monarch's girlfriend or his wife?
Marmoset_666
I love this cartoon. Brock as the out-of-control killing machine (who seems to get a great deal of booty in between saving the boys), the brothers as just these “aw shucks” kind of naïve buffoons, and Dr. Venture as this completely unsavory, egotistical freak. I love how tasteless, violent and twisted this show is – especially after having to sit through some rather unfunny cartoons from Adult Swim in the past (Baby Blues, Home Movies and that dreadful Mission Hill). Too cool.
Hasbro
Like VB. Has a fresh take on the much commented upon ho-yay in Johnny Quest. I like that they ape the animation aesthetic of Quest as well as the travel louge style.

I don't know wheter to cringe or laugh at Brock's randy West perm/mullet.

The scene that sold me on the pilot was Brock urinating on the Mummy, just so twisted.

Dr. Venture losing his kidney was a great plot twist.
Lantern7
I think the second episode was a step down from the first. Watching Dr. Venture hallunicate his father does explain quite a lot about him. Brock's as brutal as before. The boys act like dummies, and watch Brock have sex with an ugly woman. Lotsa funny moments, but I can't pinpoint one in particular...and that's not a sign of greatness. There's always next week.
muchsarcasm
I have to agree. I enjoyed it, but there weren't as many funny moments as last week's ep. I did like: "Her father invented the Mr. Mouth game, so she's an heiress."
Lantern7
Much better. We meet Baron Underbite, see him kill his minions (including Girl Hitler and Manic Eightball), see Brock fuck up Bigfoot, and see the Thaddeus and Dean lactate. Well...Dean did it in his pants, if you know what I mean. Oh, and Underbite's henchmen run into those of the Monarch, and freestyle bonding occurs.

Does it get any better than Lee Majors explaining his love for the female Bigfoot? And for Brock to be repulsed in shaving her hair for a disguise?
john mora
Even funnier to find out that Lee Majors bats for the other team.
Vermicious Knid
Everyone is funnier than the supposed main characters. The titular brothers are annoying and oblivious, Dr. Venture doesn't seem to do anything to justify all the arch villians, and Brock will be all GI Joe. Wash, rinse, repeat. The only thing different in this episode is Brock didn't get laid. The Monarch and Baron Underbite bits were much more amusing. The Bionic Man and the Sasquatch as an item is brilliant though.
savetheyak

Actually, the bigfoot was a man, and that was why Brock was repulsed. But yeah, still hilarious.

I liked when all the henchmen were saying how they became henchmen.
john mora
Everyone is funnier than the supposed main characters.

I think that's the point.
muchsarcasm
That was fun. I actually went "Yes!" when they showed one of Monarch's henchman. A lot of great lines and just so much stuff going on.
Monarch: Here let me just reboot the thing. [pause] I have a lot of extensions.

Underbite Henchman: In Underland, military service is required of all those aged 15 to 37.  At age 38, we are summarily executed.  [Other henchman bulges his eyes.]

As far as the main characters themselves, the brothers are one-note characters but I think they're occasionally funny. Dr. Rusty Venture I love because he's such an ass.
Lantern7
Dean and Hank carry the show the way Jonny Quest carried his. In other words, it's a group effort. The brothers are cute in their dim-witted way. "Deploy the J-U-D-O!" "Super run away!" "You said the double-d word!"
selfdog
Just watched this show for the first time last night. After the insane eps of Aqua Teen and Brak Show, this one fits right in. Bionic Man and a male sasquatch, together in love? Who the hell comes up with that?!
Lantern7
Wow. The name of the cute redhead with the heart-shape eyepatch: Molotov Cocktease. Welcome to Adult Swim, where you can get away with blowing a nun's head off and showing Brock's engorged manhood. Yeah, it was under a towel, but it was still there. And turns out Brock can get scared...like when he realizes he still can't get beyond second base with Molotov.

Plot? Basic Disney parody, with the Walt stand-in wanting Dr. Venture to clone him, and the Orange County resistance movement brainwashing the boys into fighting for them. Good times. And it turns out Dr. Venture isn't really a doctor. In my heart of hearts, I think we all knew that.
Zerowing
Very funny episode, but there was one thing I didn't get. It only took ONE drugged cigarette to knock out Brock, but in an earlier episode, it took a billion tranq darts to put him down?? Either the Monarch's men were using really weak tranquilizers, or that drug in the cigarette was strong enough to take down 50 elephants! lol

"Molotov Cocktease" Bwahahaha!!!! (Okay, so I'm immature!) Yes, it's so obvious that Molotov and Brock are destined to be together, have a bunch of babies who will grow up to be indestructible, superhuman killing-machines.
alliterator
Hee hee. When I saw that commercial for The Venture Brothers, I couldn't wait to see the episode the scene came from. It was like Robin Hood: Men In Tights all over again. And Molotov Cocktease is just a great name.

As for Disn... I mean Brisby, he was alright. His only funny schtick was how he would start with the villainous monologues and then get sidetracked by... being on fire. And his bodyguard was cool just because he was smart enough to walk away from fighting Brock Samson.

But really, the highlight of the episode was Molotov Cocktease.
Microprosa
The episodes without the Monarch aren't as good. He really carries the show.

Was Cocktease's crotch guard thing a reference to Aeon Flux?
JesseBaker
Was Cocktease's crotch guard thing a reference to Aeon Flux?

Not really since the big thing about Aeon Flux's chastity belt was that EVERYONE had the key to unlock it so that they could have sex with her EXCEPT for her arch-nemesis Trevor....
muchsarcasm
I really liked this episode.
Brisby: I won [Lin-Lin] in a trivia contest with David Bowie.  This was like 1980, '81, before the big trivia craze.  But then Bowie always was a trendsetter.

Dr. Venture: *sigh* No Hank, I'm not on the rag.  It's physically impossible for me-- I can't believe I'm even arguing with you about this!

As far as the billion tranq darts versus the drugged cigarette, best I can guess is that Brock was in full-on eye twiching rage when they were shooting the darts at him.

I liked Brisby and want to see him again, but we definitely have to have Molotov be a recurring character.
cinaea
I liked Brock talking down the boys: "Boys, you don't want to hurt me. You know me; you know what I'll do to you if you do." Gold, I tell you.
El Kabong
Best line of the night: "I dare you to make less sense!"

I'm so stealing that.
john mora
Everything about this episode was gold. This is by far Adult Swim's smartest non-anime acquisition.
Lantern7
Poor Brock...came thisclose to scoring with Malatov Cocktease. And he killed a deaf kid as a high schooler. He's kinda charming when he's around the boys.

Dean's so smitten, isn't he? Too bad he's a bozo just like his anal-retentive daddy.
muchsarcasm
That was a great episode, and was funnier upon second viewing.

My favorite line was Hank impersonating what is Dad would say after rescuing Brock, "You guys should totally get seperate rooms, with like Coke machines and bumper pool."

I've read the show isn't doing terribly hot ratings-wise, which worries me.
LiberryLady
Well that was something I've never seen before...

Even with (someone else's) hand up his ass, Brock can still take out two henchmen.

puffs cigarette... "I told you what I'd do for one of these things."
Lantern7
Well, that's what you get for going up Hershey Highway.

Random stuff....loved how Mrs. Tom remarried and told her dead husband to get over it. At least the boys are becoming more involved. Brock's teaching Hank how to kill? Awwwwwwww.

Boys: Go Team Venture.
Brock: (shrugging to Head Pirate) They do that.
john mora
I loved how incredibly lame the pirates were.
