Well, they resolved the Neil/Holly sub-plot, Chuck worked through some stuff about Paige's death, Kurt's little experiment got loose, they really ramped up the Kurt/Angela, and Sarah's life got very very complicated, re: Troy, Corey, and Paul. And they had some major stuff going on with the Cadre, Bright Star, and Sen. Perry.

Well, now I know what happened to O5. Had been wondering for some time. Damn. The concept was excellent; unfortunately, the execution was confused and confusing, and I blame that on the writers primarily. From what I could tell of the four or five episodes I actually saw, the acting was passable-to-good. I liked the show and would have kept on watching it.

Incidentally, even without O5 and if you're lukewarm about Jeremiah, IMO Dead Like Me provides sufficient reason to keep subscribing to Showtime.
WmDeKooning
I just assumed that Chuck just said f*ck it, and the rest of the crew continued half heartedly, and the world ended 5 years or so later.
LJC
nah, Chuck came back after "Begotten." There was some tension between him and Neil, and they wrapped up the storyline with his sister, as well. By "Follow The Leader" he was back in the thick of things, leading the gang.

I can only assume that the only reason that Showtime kept Jeremiah instead of Oddy was because of the budget

As far as I remember Showtime actually wanted to get rid of all of their Sci-Fi shows but ended up cancelling O5 but not Jeremiah because the contract for Jeremiah was different and didn't allow the show to be canceled after Season 1.

I liked the show, by the way, at least in the beginning. But I think it got all messed up somehow by the end of the season.

Poor show. :(

Hopefully, some station in the united states will eventually take the unaired episodes and broadcast them.
LJC
That's not so much with the likely (if only for the nudity and swearing). What would make more sense would be for Sony to put it out as a DVD box set. Which would be especially spiffy, if they could get Manny Coto and the cast to do commentary tracks. I'd especially love to hear Manny and Peter Weller's thoughts on the epsiodes (since Weller directed 3 of them).

I can't recall any other Sci Fi show with such a nice twisting of human, technological, and time travel story lines.

You take the basic human relationship variables: husband/wife/mother/son/widow/daughter/swinger and make them all intelligent, thoughtful, frail, and prone to making bad decisions.

Mix in some good nanotechnology nightmares, conspiracy theories, and cosmic guidance (or is it alien guidance with a hidden agenda? We'll never know now.)

Whatever. I hope they bring it out on dvd. I'd like an opportunity to see the uncut episodes from start to finish.

I loved Neil (any role that Gorham plays, I'm usually all over. I'm crazy about him) and felt so bad for him after Paige died. Brother walked off, as did Chuck. He completely deserted him. I really felt for him.

I wish there were a way for me to see the 6 unaired eps. It completely sucks that we probably won't.

Has anyone written any O5 fic? I'd be really interested.
Jane
God, I miss this show. And what a cliff hanger!!! I'm in the UK so got to see it. If only US videos played UK tapes, I would have been happy to have done copies.

Although sometimes clumsy in execution (so after Cuck got rid of his nanites, he jumped out the window and, er, walked home?), it was the characters and cast I loved best of all. The relationships were possibly the most complicated I got to enjoy on TV, especially Neil and Chuck. emziez, I always expected to see them addess later any abandonment issues Neil may have been carrying around. There was some fanfic, but I'll have to get back to you with the links. I'm happily planning some myself - because I wnated the closure! - but that'll be a long time coming.

I'm a Chris Gorham fan too and Neil is far and away my favourite role for him. Such a tough guy!
LJC
Neil fascinates me--and not just because I dig Gorham. I love the fact that even though Chuck is deeply bitter about how his own father favoured his older sister over him, he's utterly blind to the way he and Paige are repeating the past with Marc and Neil. And my heart just breaks for the kid (sorry--at 22? He may be a genius astronaut, but he's still a kid) because he's so desperate for his parent's love and approval, and feels like nothing he does will ever be good enough.

What kills me is where thus far, he's right. Chuck never--even when they're dying--tells his son he loves him. Just expects him to magically know. It's a deliciously fucked up relationship that I just adore. And Paige's reaction, once she finally believes, and asks Neil about what his future/past held? The "Who'd have thought?" just broke my heart. Not "Oh honey, I'm so proud of you. I always knew you could do it." But surprise and disbelief. And worst of all, confusion that just showed she never really knew her son--and never will. And just like his dad, Neil bottles it all up, squashes it down.

Seriously--had the shown gone to a 2nd season? I was soooooo looking forward to Neil having a total meltdown a la "Rage" only one his dad can't write off because Neil's not under the influence of some drug.

I haven't had any luck finding O5 fanfic outside of one or two token slash stories. I'm craving long and plotty genfic like MAD. And I'm resisting writing any at the moment because I have a backlog of unfinished Firefly and Jake 2.0 stories that I really, really, really need to finish before I launch into O5...

But I'm soooo tempted by the idea of the synthetics returning Angela. And more stuff with Holly. And Neil sleeping with the Kayli the reporter gunning for Sarah's job. And Chuck and the lady detective with whom he had mad chemistry. And Kurt--whom I absolutely love, darling. He so went from the guy I wanted to smack, in the pilot, to one of my all-time faves. Sarah and Corey remains probably the most compelling storyline to me--tho Troy bugged me slightly, the stuff with her and Paul's marriage? Her desperate love for her son? Couldn't tear my eyes away.

You should though. You're a great writer :-D.

When Neil completely flipped on the drug, I was thinking those were some seriously buried deep-down feelings rising. And I think Chuck and Kurt were sort of letting it go over their heads because he was under the influence. But the dude really needed an ear at that point-and most of what he was saying didn't register w/Chuck. I always liked Sara's dynamic with Neil. She seemed to be receptive with him when Chuck completely went batshit and left the restaurant in the end of ep 14. I felt so bad for Neil. Boy needed some grade-A hugging. I think he needed Chuck desperately at that point, as fucked up their relationship was. And then he just walked right out of the diner to go off somewhere. I know he was grieving, but damn, I got mad at Chuck for deserting his son like that. 22 or 17 or 32 or 15 or whatever, the kid freaking needed *someone*. Sara having (sort of) lost her son, I could see Sara kind of mothering Neil a bit. One lost her son, the other lost his mom. I always liked when they concentrated on family storylines. They could have done a good deal with that.

Poor Gorham has, like, the shittiest luck with shows. He's a really good actor though. He has a new pilot I believe. Hope it stays for more than 10 episodes.
Jane
Major word to the both of you. Chuck, for the life of him, can't express what he feels. After Neil slugged him (totally cracked me up) and launched into his loser/golden boy rant, I seem to recall Chuck's response was just a knowing amused smile - but we sure as hell didn't hear him vocalise anything to the contrary for Neil's sake (granted, Neil was in no receptive mood at that point). And when Neil told him, "I know you're checking out", Chuck's response was, "You don't know what you're talking about" - and then left it at that, without any kind of assurances to Neil that it wasn't a case of Neil not being worth staying for!

I tried to find the fanfic link but it's vanished.
LJC
What I loved was Chuck's unconscious repition of his own father's "You're catching flies" line to Neil--just makes you want to sit him down, give him a bourbon, ask him if he's comfortable, and then rip him a new asshole for being such a dick. Yet I LOVE Chuck. I love the character's flaws, and how realistically the show dealt with them.
LJC
For folks looking for links (fanfic or otherwise) this site seems to be the most comprehensive I've found thus far. And this French-language site has both images and complete episode synopses.
LJC
So, I marathonned the show with another friend, and am giddy all over again...

Anyone working on any fan fiction?
Jane
I am. It's a massive saga, my own not so little season 2, so gawd knows when it'll be done, in time for the world to explode I expect. But I need the closure so whenever time allows I enjoy messing with it. When it's done I'll let you know, 'cause I wont know what else to do with it.
LJC
Yay! I'm quite tempted to start writing, as I was hit with ideas pretty much the second I finished watching "Fossil." I'm keeping msyelf busy for the moment with "Jake 2.0" however...
LJC
okay, is it sad that my first thought when I heard Manny Coto was the new showrunner for ENTERPRISE was "Crap. I may have to actually start watching it, now that it will stop sucking like a Hoover."

Also, noticed that O5 is now airing in Germany as of last week, and starting over from the beginning on SPACE in Canada June 20.

ah, to live in other countries with better TV schedules.

Also, did anyone catch Sebastian Roche's "Touching Evil" ep? It was nifty. I hadn't seen him onscreen with his wife since "Roar." They have mad mad chemistry (which is not always true on-screen with husband/wife teams).
LJC
very small o5 fan site that I'm tinkering with...
WmDeKooning
Veddy nice LJC...

I like.

I'm almost tempted to sit and wait for the applet code="EnhancedCountdown.class" to reach the "countdown reached".

Oh! It's pretty too.
LJC
And now the fanlisting is open as well--and the sign-up dates for the ficathon have been extended.

LJC
I've taken the plunge, and posted my first o5 short story. Not surprisingly, it is Neil-centric. I'd love to know what people think?
LJC
According to the schedule posted at Showtime's website, Odyssey 5 will start airing Friday Sept. 3 on Sho Too (East/West), and air 3 eps every Friday night.

squeeee!
roosterboy
Ooh, are they gonna show the episodes they didn't show the first time around?

I suppose I could, y'know, check the schedule myself.

...

Ep113 is the first of the unaired ones, isn't it? In that case, woohoo! looks like they are gonna air 'em!
LJC
The unaired eps will air in October, according to their schedule, on regular flavour Showtime. I guess they're airing the oens that have already aired on ShoToo while "Jerimiah" finishes on regular Showtime.

I'm giddy. Does it matter I've seen the eps that are airing tonight a million times? Hell no! 1 million and 1, sez I!
FamousX
So I guess we've seen all the episodes now - turns out that nasty NASA woman might be a "good guy."

I wonder where the show was supposed to go from here. Probably some kind of peace treaty between humans and sentients.
LJC
I still don't think the Cadre are the "good" guys. I think they are over-reacting to the "threat" of the sentients--but I think that most of the sentients just want to survive--not dominance.

personally, while the over-all plot arc is nifty, I'm much mroe engaged by the character arcs. The cadre and the sentients can do whatever, so long as I get to see those fucked up Taggart boys fight, Sarah's life come together and fall apart and come together again, Kurt and Angela give it another go, etc.
dartmouthhoop
This was a fantastic show that was given short shrift by Showtime. Great actors/acting....great premise...maybe someday it will all be resolved.
booklad
I liked this show, I really did. There were many good things about it, acting, storyline, well thought out arc. But it suffered far too much for taking itself too serious. I know it's not supposed to be a laughfest, what with the impending end of the world, but would it have killed them to crack a smile or a joke once in a while.

My favourite episode, I can't remember exactly which one it was now, (it's been a long time since I've seen it) was with guest star Ted Raimes. Why? Because there was lightheartedness. Humour. A bit of slapstick. You could see the cast really loosening up and enjoying themselves. More of that would have been welcome.
SoTired
This is another show that has been picked up by HDNet. (Available if you have Satelite or certain cable and an HD TV.) It shows on Wednesday nights, and currently they are about halfway through the season.
Red Adept
Makes me wish that there was an INHD on-demand channel. We caught last week's episode after watching Dead Like Me. We never had Showtime, so now I'm looking around to find the episodes we missed so we can catch up with all this.
Bruinsfan
One thing I recall about this show is that, unlike every other exploding planet sequence I've ever seen in movies or on TV, its managed to be chilling and have a real impact. I think it was that image of the derelict car floating across the shuttle's nose that did it.
Kris_AB
Wanted to see this for a while due to the Christopher Gorham factor. Plus Manny Coto created it and he was one of the few good writers on Enterprise (I hear he did damn good work on 24's fifth season this year as well, though I still have to watch Season 4 before I can get to that).

Was surprised and happy to find out it got a DVD release.
voodoo lady
Terrific show. Wow, Gorham swears quite....coherently.
TheLabRat
Aww. All my chatter about Gorham in other shows and blame for y'all not getting anything done went poof with the forum ghosts. Oh well.

I'm curious if any of you watching the show right now are new viewers and if so what you think. Also curious aobut how people will like the unaired episodes but we aren't there yet.
dagnyshrugged
I just purchased the Odyssey 5 DVD. I'm on a Gorham bender, thanks to Ugly Betty and the showing of Jake 2.0 on Sci-Fi.

I'm almost done with the series, and have been pleasantly surprised. It is a little surreal to see so much nudity and swearing on a sci-fi series...it's a little jarring, but kinda awesome once you get used to it. My mind is still blown that Showtime even attempted this...guess it's not a surprise that it only lasted one season.

I've been enjoying it...mostly good acting, interesting plotline, if a bit convoluted at times. I'm kind of bummed I won't get any resolution...were there any interviews with Coto re: where he would have taken the show?

My only minor quibbles: I HATE the actress playing Sarah, and the Angela/Kurt romance really came out of the blue for me. But Weller is fun to watch when he's in full-on yell mode, and Gorham really transforms for every role. He's very subtle. Thank god he doesn't have to play teenagers anymore!
Emeraldfire
I'm watching this on Sci Fi channel on Foxtel in Australia. Due to my impatience and a need know how things end, I have read ahead, and now I am bitterly disappointed that it only lasted for one season, and so I'll never know if they did prevent the earth being blown to smithereens, or not. I'm torn between wanting to keep watching even knowing that it just ends, or not bothering because nothing gets resolved. I'll probably keep watching, time travel is my favourite sci fi genre.

The last episode to air here was the one with the rapture drug.
ElectricMonk
What's even worse, if you listen to the commentary on the pilot, is that Manny Coto has some kind of silly fantasy about Odyssey 5 returning to television so he won't tell anyone where the series was going.

Ah well. I enjoyed the show quite a lot, as it was.

ETA: There was only the one commentary, so no plural for it.
Fate3

I hate that. Just tell us what was going to happen, or at least somewhere where you were taking it!

I rented it from Netflix last year and quite enjoyed it. Would have liked some answers to what was going to happen though.
Bobby Drake
I still miss this show, one of my favourite ever. I actually love the actress who plays Sarah and can't believe she doesn't act much anymore apart from the occasional guest on Enterprise/Cold Case etc. I wish Coto would bring a book out or something to let us know what was going to happen, i think we have waited long enough.
mauberley
So... Sci-Fi aired the pilot for O5 and I must say, it was quite good. (Except for whoever was doing the closed captioning--the correct phrase is "should've," not "should of." Damnit. It was everywhere.) The destruction sequence of the Earth was very impressive.

I will probably add it to my Netflix queue, based on what everyone's posted. I was hoping that there would be some resolution despite the cancellation, though. I still reserve the right to harbor the same seething hatred for Showtime that I had when they cancelled Dead Like Me... grr.
TheLabRat
I was just coming here to post that Sci Fi was airing Oddy 5 but alas, you beat me to it. It's weird to see it cut up into commercials but I think they are mostly doing an OK job with that. I'm having problems with the Sci Fi schedulebot right now. Anyone know if they are going to air the whole series?
AngelKitty
When I tried, they list 6 more episodes. I'd never heard of this show before and now I know why they were swearing if it was first shown on Showtime.
WmDeKooning
I'm recording the series on my DVR to complete my collection of episodes. I think I taped like the last 5 back on Showtime. It won't be the same without Chuck's colourful language, but hey...

YO! Odyssey 5! Woot!
cutecouple
Anyone know if they are going to air the whole series?
I went looking here, and they seem to be running it through December.
WillowFae20
which means it's probably just a 'place holder' for BattleStar Galactica, which if I'm not mistaken comes back in January. Oh well, I guess this is just one more show to look for on DVD.
Glynnda
Does anyone know if the Sci-Fi Channel is airing entire episodes (aside from the fact that expletives have obviously been deleted)? It seemed like there should have been a scene where it was explained to Angela how she ended up five years in the past, given that she was unconscious for most of the pilot and completely missed the destruction of Earth and the appearance of the Seeker. However, as aired on Sci-Fi, she reappeared in the middle of a mission, was understandably extremely disoriented, and had to be talked in by Chuck. The next time we see her, she's completely on board with the mission to save Earth.
Bobby Drake
Glynnda - not sure if we ever saw that - as i have the box set, if I can I will check the episode tonight and get back to you.
Glynnda
Thanks, Bobby Drake, I would appreciate that.
