Wait wait there was a book? Time to hit ebay.
I loved this show by the way. I was in high school when it came out and i managed to talk a couple of my friends into watching and we used to sit in class and talk about it the next day. Those were some great conversations too and it actually made high school students, well us at least, think about good and evil. *gasp*
Ever since everytime i see Gary Cole i start thinking, "Do something evil, do something evil!" Heres hoping they bring back the series and release the old episodes on DVD cause i would buy those in a heartbeat.

American Gothic, yay! Man, I love this show. I'm not sure how well a movie would be, especially without Lucas Black or Sarah Paulson but...I'd still check it out. Why couldn't the story take place years later to match the actors' increased age?
Now if only the series would be released on DVD.

Me too. When was it on, anyway? Was it Friday nights? I really loved this show; it was so dark. I'm glad there are others who remember it. I think it's way underrated. I never saw
Twin Peaks, but would I be right in thinking it kind of had the same vibe?

American Gothic took itself a lot more seriously than Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks had some really offbeat moments (I'm just going by having seen the first on DVD. Haven't seen Season 2, the pilot, or Fire Walk With Me), due in no small part to Kyle MacLachlan's oddball character, the dreams, and the sometimes quirky music. That said, they do have a bit of a similar haunted-small-town-feel. Twin Peaks felt like a much more isolated place though, whereas Trinity somehow managed to be creepier at times even though it was more populated.
I enjoyed Twin Peaks, but I think American Gothic was lightyears ahead of it.

I loved this show and was extremely annoyed when it was cancelled. One of the few truly well written, well acted, well paced shows on the air at the time. Reading these posts have made me start thinking about what made Sheriff Buck such an effectively sinister character. I think it was his wholesome good looks and charm being exhibited a few minutes before he'd snap a neck. Or when he caused someone to do themselves harm then smiled at them in a good natured, awshucks kind of way. Creepy.
Fabrisse
Mar 16, 2004 @ 7:38 pm
For me, Buck's appeal was that he never made an overt move. It was all subtle pressures and moments until the person needed him. At that point the person who approached him knew that they were dealing with the devil. Whenever the final reckoning took place, it was always the fault of the person who approached him in the first place. Sherriff Buck was always a believable devil.

I absolutely loved this show:) My Gary Cole (and Jake Weber) crush is still alive and well. Question, has anyone ever came across any American Gothic slash on the internet? Specifically Lucas/Dr Matt? I've been searching high and low without any luck.

Wow!!! I couldn't believe it when I saw this on the forums!!! How cool! Not too long after I moved to England when I was 19, American Gothic aired and I absolutely loooooved it!!
I was heartbroken when it was cancelled but I was never sure if it was cancelled over here or if British tv had cancelled cuz it wasn't popular there. They never said. They aired the last episode (wasn't it where Caleb is given the choice to be bad like his Dad-Sheriff Buck-and it looks like that's what he's gonna do? It's been so long now I can only remember snippets) and then it just never came back.
I couldn't believe it.
It's funny how I should come across this thread, as last week I went to the Movies to see Dawn of the Dead and Jake Weber is in it and I was so excited as I haven't seen him in anything since American Gothic and so naturally, it made me think of it.
I didn't have a crush on him back then, I thought he was really skinny or something. Anyway, I found myself thinking him quite the hottie in Dawn of the Dead.
Maybe I really have matured. ;o)
If you're not too freaked out by zombies, I suggest seeing the movie. Jake Weber is really good in it. In fact the whole cast are really good. Worth seeing.

Mar 30, 2004 @ 10:52 am
Agreed Peanut03, Jake Weber is great in Dawn of the Dead. Is it just me, or has he buffed up a bit since American Gothic? He's looking pretty damn good:)
Anyway, I'm not sure how I'd feel about having any of the originals recast with other actors, particularly Lucas Black. I can't really imagine anyone else playing Caleb. But even if this has to happen, I'd still be on board for the movie/remake/continuation. As long as Gary Cole and Jake Weber are back!
Peanut03
Mar 30, 2004 @ 11:54 am
Yeh Eliza, I'm pretty sure he's buffed up! He certainly looked good in DotD. I definitely remember him being a bit of a scrawny thing in American Gothic.
I feel the same way about the recast. Would be weird, but a whole new audience who never saw it first time round, would maybe get into it. What is Lucas Black doing nowadays does anyone know? He was awesome as Caleb. Great wee actor.
I remember he went on to star in a movie with David Morse and (I think) Melanie Griffith not long after AG. I didn't actually see it although I love David Morse.

Thanks for that Kris AB. I don't remember seeing him in Cold Mountain. Who was he?
I remember seeing the girl from Stepmom in that scene where she boats Jude Law and the creepy reverend guy across the river and she gets shot.
Was interesting to see her in such a different role.
Don't recall Lukas though. (Shame on me!!!) Has he changed a lot?

I don't remember seeing him in Cold Mountain. Who was he?
He was the young Rebel soldier Jude Law tried to look after. Here's a site with some recent pictures. If you page down to 2-8-04, there's a nice interview where he talks about the film. Apparently his next film is the Texas high school football movie that Ron Howard is directing. Billy Bob Thornton plays the coach and Lucas is the quarterback. I think he said it was called "Friday Night Lights".

I loved the show until they vanished Dr. Matt. I loved him and was really disappointed when he left the show. The other guy that replaced him just didn't do it for me. Also, I couldn't understand why the cousin, Paige, whatever her name was, slept with Sheriff Buck. She did understand that he was evil, right? She knew that he killed her parents, raped Caleb's mother. What the hell was she thinking? I prefer to think that she was under some kind of spell of his because the sex couldn't have been that good.

I understand what you're trying to say
SusannahDean, but SatanSex? So hot. I mean, Sheriff Buck just had that thing going on with his eyes that just hypnotized you even though he was pure evil.
Anyway, I'm not sure how I'd feel about having any of the originals recast with other actors, particularly Lucas Black. I can't really imagine anyone else playing Caleb.
Word to the third,
Eliza. I don't think that there is anybody who could play the role of Caleb as well as Lucas Black could. He just had the anger, confusion, and innosense of the character down pat and Lucas was so young. Although, I was over at Fametracker in the "Pretty" thread and someone posted recent pictures of Lucas Black; that boy is looking
damn fine.

I don't think that there is anybody who could play the role of Caleb as well as Lucas Black could.
I think there are other people who could have if they'd been the first, but Lucas Black made his act unfollowable. Something which I'd credit most of the cast with (especially Gary Cole, Sarah Paulson, and Paige Turco), hence my earlier comment of reluctantly preferring no sequel.

Oh how I loved this show! I was 13/14 when it aired originally and I used to have to sneak around to watch it (up till 11 on a school night? My mom thought not) and plus, once my parents saw roughly 15 minutes of an ep (and of course 15 minutes involving sex) it was pretty well banned. I managed to see it all, though. Hee hee hee.
And then summer of 2003, I was in Ireland on a school trip and imagine my shock when I turned on the TV in Galway and there was American Gothic! Oh I squealed very loudly and was glued to the screen the entire time. It was so much better than I remembered it.
Why do the original, well-written shows always get the axe?

Apr 20, 2005 @ 7:13 am
simply put?
networks of all countries are convinced their veiwers are stupid, and are terrified by all evidence to the contrary.
they can never quite believe it when shows they think will fail, don't.
fantasy/sf/horror is always going to be on a sticky wicket, because some of it is quite niche, and harder for non-fans to understand.
if it has effects, then up goes the budget, and in an era when more channels fight for viewers, if they can run something up that's cheap compared to the amount of viewers it get, that's what they'll do.
to demonstrate - in the UK this saturday night on the two main channels, at 7pm one side is giving up the new dr who, effects laden and cost a bomb to produce, but guarenteed huge ratings. the other side is giving us celebrity wrestling. $ for $, ratings for ratings, which do think will give the biggest profit margin?

I adored this show as well, even though I was only 14 when it aired and at that time was usually more into shows like 90210...but I was obsessed with AG. It aired on Wednesday nights at one point (they moved it 5 million times) and I used to sit in class all day just dying for evening to come, and then I would want the weekend to hurry up and be over so that the next episode would come on! I was devastated when it was cancelled. Until Veronica Mars this year I have never loved another show that much. I would love to have the DVDs so I can get rid of my tapes, which I am still hanging onto even though the episodes are all out of order (I had to catch some on the Scifi Channel a few years ago when they re-aired it). Someone really needs to get on the ball. Many of those actors still get mentioned in connection to the show and they've pretty much all gone on to other great things.
I haven't checked in a few years, but for anyone looking for fanfiction there were several fan sites, including one called Virtual Trinity that had a virtual second season and third season. Some other sites as well. I just can't enjoy the fanfiction because half the reason I loved the show was the performances and the cinematography--the thing just looked great.
Looking back on everything, I'm kind of creeped out at how in love with Sheriff Buck I was. I mean, I was only 14 and Gary Cole was...not.

jenet27, yeah I had the same reaction when I saw it again. You wouldn't think that a 14-year old girl would really be attracted to a 40-something personification of evil, but oh, how I was. At least now I know I wasn't the only one.

Saw a preview for a new show on
TNT starring our very own Sheriff Lucas Buck. That's Buck, with a B. I doubt I'll be tuning in, the show didn't interest me but I did like seeing him as a "tough guy" again. As much as I love him in
The Brady Bunch movies and as Bing Bob on
The West Wing, I miss the functioning brain cells.

My mother used to call me and say "Someone's at the door." Then she'd giggle and hang up. I'd call her back and do the same.
I miss that show. I love Gary Cole(anyone remember his other show 'Midnight Caller?') and the little boy and the teacher. The teacher was a trip.
I think the first time I heard the term 'Drama Queen' was from Sheriff Buck. He was terrorizing some poor soul and they're screaming and carrying on and he says "Oh, don't be such a drama queen."
I would definitely buy this on DVD.

I've finally watched this show thanks to my cable's on demand service! What a cool show, I hope they make the DVDs spectacular with commentaries, a look back, behind the scenes, where season 2 would have gone etc.
I hope that the DVD has the episodes in order though. I think this is the first time watching a show on DVD or in this case on demand where the episodes were out of order bothered me. It was all over the place.
By the way does anyone know why they got rid of Dr. Matt (Jake Weber) he was awesome and while I liked Billy I wish they would kept Dr. Matt.
One more comment this is just anoather show I really liked (Brimstone, Eerie Indiana, Keen Eddie, Line of Fire, Eyes, Profit, Hawaii) where it had so much potential and would have been interesting to see where it went.

What I remember about Dr. Matt disappearing (I also love how this show was on during the adolescence of the internet) was that his character was too dour and depressing and that's why they got rid of him.
I always expected him to return, figuring he was't killed off. Dr. Peale sucked ass compared to Dr. Matt who was totally a father figure for Caleb.

Not a jail, a sanitarium, the same place Lucas Buck's girlfriend lived after the car accident. There was a woman who told Dr. Matt she was Buck's mother and convinced him to try to kill Buck because he was eeeeevil. Buck took advantage of this and got him committed.

Nope. Invitros were grown in an artificial womb/tank(also another term for people). So they didn't have a belly button. They were connected with an umbical cord to the tank. An umbical cord which was attached to them on their neck. It has been a while, and I can't remember if the science was ever explained for the odd placement of the attachment.

Well deleted and extended scenes are usually the extra I'm most interested in, so that's awesome. Don't always get them on the shows you most want them for (Buffy anyone?). One commentary is cool too, the pilot is definitely worthy of that. I think it's a bit strange that there isn't even one interview in there though, not even an old one. I guess they weren't willing to spend much money on this.
I can't complain about the small amount of extras (and I say "small" assuming that there'll only be a handful of deleted/extended scenes. Maybe there'll be dozens). I'm just glad we finally get the show.

Here's another
update from TVshowsOnDVD.com. Bigger shot of the cover, some shots of the menus, and a bit more info.
There's gonna be over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. That's pretty frickin sweet. A new episode's worth of material.
I knew if they didn't go for a purely artsy cover, we'd at least have Buck on the cover. He's arguably the cast member most recognizable to most, the one who might cause people casually browsing the TV-on-DVD section in the store to go, "Ah, I remember that creepy series. It was excellent. Must buy this." Caleb is the next logical choice, so it's good to see him on there too. I think Merlyn would've made a better choice than Gail, much as I like Paige Turco. Not only because Merlyn was a more integral part of the series right off the bat, but I'm pretty sure she was more of a fan-favorite and Sarah Paulson's been doing better TV and movie success-wise (
Down with Love, a brief but significant role in
Serenity).
The stone angels are kinda gaudy.
