I think another possible reason was that they were airing Gilmore Girls: Beginnings last year on the WB to attract more viewers and reshow the first season. And they wouldn't have wanted to put out the first season dvds while they were still airing on the WB.
No, this wouldn't make a difference. After all, season 1 of Smallville is out and Smallville: Beginnings is airing this season.
Most shows wait until they have 4 seasons before they are released, they usually never rerun shows that don't last that long.
Is this really true? What about
My So-Called Life? And
Sports Night? And now Bravo (I think) is going to air reruns of
Keen Eddie, which didn't even make it a season.

Let's just say that that four year rule isn't as absolute as it used to be, DMW_SFU.
My guess is that when DVD technology was still new most network types that that premature releases of DVDs would take big bites out of syndication ratings and thus end up losing money for them. Subsequent experience has shown them that's not necessarily the case, resulting in good things for those of us who want our DVDs *now*. :-)

Also (and this is a minor nitpicky addendum), both My So Called Life and Sports Night were sadly off the air and their boxed sets were the whole and complete series, rather than one season at a time.

Just in from
TV Shows on DVD:
Warner Brothers Home Video announces that one of the most-requested modern television shows is finally coming to DVD this spring, just in time for Mother's Day. Gilmore Girls - The Complete 1st Season breezes onto DVD this May, shortly before the fourth season finale airs on The WB Network.
All 21 first-season episodes are here, along with these bonus supplements:
Gilmore Girl Beginnings - a documentary including interviews with the show's creators, cast, and crew.
Gilmore-isms - a montage of the witty comments coined on the show
Gilmore Goodies and Gossip - fun facts pop-up throughout the episode "Rory's Dance"
Additional/Deleted Scenes
Aspect ratio is in the originally broadcast 1.33:1 format, and the soundtrack is English Stereo. Subtitles are in "English, Francais, and Espanol", plus closed captioning is at hand. This 6-Disc set has a running time of 997 minutes, and the list price is $59.98. Look for Gilmore Girls - The Complete 1st Season to roll out on May 4, 2004.
They also have cover art at the site.

Be sure to check eBay a day or so after official release. I expect we'll be able to get it for about thirty bucks early, ten bucks in a couple of months.
Don't attempt to download it for free! Much too risky. Besides being, well, wrong....

I wish I could find the shows I like for $10. I can't EVER, no matter how long they've been out. Maybe I'm always in too much of a hurry to buy them, though. This is one I can wait on, though. It's been ages since I've seen the first season, so I can wait a few months after release date.
That's not to say I'm not excited. I just think my new philosophy will be to wait on buying TV on DVD in general.

10 Bucks is only a realistic price if they are used and somebody just wants to get rid of it on the cheap. If I paid 40-60 bucks for something, a 10 buck sale would be too little compensation for my hassle.
I mean, you get about 17 hours worth of content. much more than a theatrical movie. Renting the series at blockbuster, assuming it's broken up by 4 episode disks, will probably run you $25+ or so in rental charges.
Edited because I meant to say "more than a movie", not a TV show

If you plan on buying the DVD set from a large store (lika a Best Buy or Media Play) they are usually the cheapest immediately on and after the release date. This is true for most DVDs and CDs sold at such stores. Of course there's always E-Bay and Amazon!

It's not listed in their database yet, but when it is, this is the best place to find the best price for buying DVDs online:
http://www.dvdpricesearch.com/My experience with DVD shopping is a set with a $60 retail price can usually be found for about $40 or so at a Discount DVD online store, and quite possibly for even less...

I am making a mental note of May 4 right now...all right, I'm finished. I really dig the picture on the cover. Nothing says season one quite like Lorelai rocking the denim jacket and Rory minus eye makeup. The extras sound pretty good, too. It's also realeased early enough before finals that I don't have to worry about the DVD interfering with my study schedule, which is a plus.

Lucky for you! The DVDs are released approximately two weeks *before* my finals. Nonetheless, May 4th is going on the calendar, ASAP. I'll go price shopping, and eventually just buy the thing, on my breaks from completing last-minute, end-of-the-term assignments and studying for those darn final exams, and then I'll have to lock the DVD set away, until after finals, or else I won't get anything done!
I'm disappointed that we aren't getting a commentary track by ASP, but the other special features more than compensate for that (I don't know about other WB network shows on DVD, but I think we're getting a pretty good deal). Plus, DVD sets of TV shows are constantly improving, so perhaps the season two set will be even better, if that's possible. (But we have to *buy* the season one sets in order to demonstrate consumer demand for season two sets, so don't even entertain the notion of downloading! : )
Edited to say that Gilmore Girls is the first of my favorite television series to be released on DVD, so a huge thank you to Warner Home Video, and a great big, "What's the hold-up?" to Warner and the other studios responsible for my other shows. But you did something right by releasing GG, so you've earned your brownie points for the day.

Actually, the $59.98 is a decent price. It's $76.70 CDN. I mean, DVDs for 30-minute sitcoms are around $60 CDN (using Friends as an example), and the one-hour drama DVDs are about $145 (using The X-Files as an example). So, paying $75 for 21 hour-long episodes? Good deal to me.
And, wheee! May 4! Day after my birthday! Someone better get me this as a gift...
Alia James
Jan 15, 2004 @ 10:39 am
Best Buy only offers the sale price for the first week. Then it's at the MSRP, and they won't discount it again for a looooong time. But I bet once Amazon has it up on the site, we'll be able to get it for 25% off or something like that. Maybe even Super Saver shipping since it's over $25!

I've lately bought two TV shows on DVD (Alias Season 2 and West Wing Season One). Each was about $45 in store (Target and Walmart respectively), so I'd expect that GG would run about the same. That said, I'm so excited! And I had to comment on this:

Not only might it be cheaper on Amazon.com, but Amazon generally gives a rather generous discount if you pre-order before the release date. I generally get $55-$60 DVD box sets (e.g. for Angel and Alias) for $40-$45 dollars as long as I know the release date and make sure to order a couple of weeks ahead of time.

But bogtrotter, I have found that when you opt for the "Super Saver" shipping, Amazon.com takes a loooooong time to send it to you. They send the DVDs to people who paid for the shipping first. I made this mistake with Season One of "The West Wing". It took so long to get it, I had to get on the phone and CALL them.
I like doing the free shipping, but only on stuff I don't mind waiting for. Otherwise, it drives me crazy to see it in stores and know I have to wait. >:-P
However, for the sake of fairness, I will stipulate that you may not have the same experience. For me, though, it takes a good week to a week and a half to get "Super Saver" DVDs after they've been released. And I have them delivered to my work in Manhattan!
I'll shut up now.

Hee! I pre-ordered the instant I got that email from Amazon. I originally signed up for email notification, oh, about 18 months ago.
All I can say is you have to buy these DVD's, especially if you've never, ever seen Season One. There's a couple rough episodes in the beginning as they settle into the show, but then it's nothin' but pure, amazing magic from that point on.

Fortunately, A.J., I am a greedy, instant gratification-craving simpleton, so I said Nay to the free shipping and went with the quickie delivery.
And Sirfulcrum, I've never seen more than a handful of S1 eps. Never watched the show on first go-round because I thought the title was twitty, (you know, like T.J. Maxx and any restaurant name that ends in an exclamation point) but of course I have now seen the error of my ways. Yeehaw!

I've found the best prices for the DVD box sets are at Costco. If you're lucky enough to have one by you, I'd recommend going there. I always check around and they've always been the lowest IMO. The last DVD I bought there was Buffy S5. Plenty of places had it for usually $45 and over but they sold it for $36.99. And they also don't raise their prices after the first sale week.
So the GG DVD doesn't have the pilot? That sucks.
JRT
Jan 23, 2004 @ 1:42 pm
It has the pilot that we saw on TV--the one for public consumption--but not the abbreviated studio-only pilot that was used to sell the show to the WB executives.
sirfulcrum
Jan 23, 2004 @ 2:48 pm
Yeah, the unaired pilot. With Alex Borstein as Sookie. And some skinny, average-height kid as Dean.

I would just like to go Blah! on the DVD because I have found out that it probably wont be released in other zones, and as I am in zone 4, I miss out. Why oh why! Hardly anyone I know has seen season one because of TV2 messing around with it and putting it at lunchtime, when everyone is at uni, so we were all so excited. Blah.

Not released in other zones?! Seriously? I second your Blah!, ora wai. Apparently they're planning on treating the GG DVD's the same way as the GG soundtrack. The WB didn't release that one over here either. (I suppose I'll have to start saving for a region free DVD player now...).

Does anyone know how the set is likely to be packaged? I couldn't tell from the picture I saw of the (proposed/finalized??) packaging.
What I mean is, do you think it will be cardboard foldout style, or with individual cases? I thought it looked a little too thick in the picture to be foldout. I personally prefer the cardboard style, because it takes up less room on the shelf, and I think it looks nicer.

Do you by any chance own any Buffy DVD sets, aidanspencer? Not being a Smallville fan I can't say for certain but from what I've seen of them on the store shelves the packaging appears to be very similar. Which shouldn't be that surprising since they're both WB shows, IMO.

Here's a thought that will hopefully cheer up anyone who's feeling glum. It's less than 4 weeks now till the Season One set comes out.

Which episode do you expect to watch most often?

Apr 7, 2004 @ 10:39 am
First, "Christopher Returns." It's the only episode from season one I've managed not to tape, so I haven't seen it in forever. The first time I tried to tape it, the VCR broke, while the second time, I set it wrong. (And when Christopher was in "Haunted Leg," my cable went out. The elves in my TV do not like him.) After that, probably "Rory's Birthday Parties," one of my favorite episodes. (Partly, though not wholly, because of the appearance of the Dean bracelet. But the whole episode tells you everything you need to know about the strained relationship between Emily and Lorelai, in my opinion.)

But I guess I'll start with Rory's Dance. Then Kiss and Tell, Forgiveness and Stuff, That Damn Donna Reed, Emily in Wonderland, and Love, Daisies, and Troubadors.
I have these on tape -- but somehow the DVD is just bound to be better. Can't wait.

I probably won't buy the DVDs, but if I did, I'd probably watch them all roughly equally (I watch serial episodes in series almost every time). However, if I ever decided to go for a one shot, the prime candidates would be, in order of airing, "Cinnamon's Wake", "Kiss and Tell", and, of course, "That Damn Donna Reed".
