Part 1 aired at 10:30am EST this morning, and part 2 will air at 12:30pm EST. I've been watching. :)

I've been watching (and enjoying!) this show since Lifetime started rerunning it. I'm sure I haven't seen all the eps yet, but whatever happened with Yetta and Sammy (Ray Charles)? Did they ever get married? I remember discussion about their engagement but I have seen the last episodes (Fran's wedding, pregnancy, Maggie's wedding, Fran gives birth, CC and Niles marry) of the show and he wasn't in any of them. Anyone know the scoop?
neophoenix
This might sound silly, but can anyone tell me WHAT is up with Fran's voice during season 1? It sounds like she's trying to force herself to sound more nasal than she already is. Her wardrobe also isn't helping. Where are the short skirts, fun retro fashions and non-80's big hair & wigs?
Rychard
My favorite line?

(paraphrasing here)
Fran: You mean all those years you were continually mocking and degrading Miss Babcock, you were actually flirting?
Niles: No good?

I was an extra on this show many years ago, and it was one of the funnest sets to be on. Fran was generously nice.

I freaking love TN. I was less than ammused when Lifetime started airing it 37 times a day, barging into my Golden Girls territory, but after some sulking, gave it a chance. It really was a pleasant surprise. I too never watched it originally, but remember watching Beautician... at a friend's after it just came out on video, and being blown away at how beautiful Fran Drescher was. Before then, I just thought of the Noo Yawk tawkin' funny voiced woman, and nothing more really. Then I watched Lifetime, and learned she was a damn good funny lady, too. WORD about Fran's Joan Collins impersonation during the "Dynasty Spoof". Fabulous.

Anyway, this is one show where I honestly just love all the characters. Niles and CC are wonderful, Sylvia and Yetta are hysterical, and the kids are all pretty good. (I used to feel the non-Maggieness, as well as the "Who the fuck cares about Val?" vibe...but after the 1,678 viewing of the show, they really can grow on you).

Some of my favorites:

Sylvia: Oh my God! I'm having palpitations! Quick, get me my medicine!
Fran runs to the fridge, heroically carrying back a Hershey's Syrup bottle and a spoon.

Fran's French Dude: Hello CaCa...
CC: What?
F'sFD: Is that not was CC stands for? This is what the butler told me!
CC and French Dude kiss. Niles (of course) oversees
Niles: (to CC) Did CaCa do a no-no in the kitchen?

Or during the Niagra Falls episode, when Fran incredulously beats Niles into Mr. Sheffield's office, after Niles watched her go upstairs and dashed through the house to beat her to it.

I teared up watching the finale too. That's what it's going to be like saying goodbye to my high school at the end of this year. All sad like that. Every room has a memory, that kind of thing.

Um did I mention I was not that smart at 1 am? anyways....

Maybe its because I'm a sappy romantic at heart, but I really did love the relationship of Fran and Max (even though their engagement was totally rushed, I would've loved to seen them as dating couple for a couple of episodes, maybe, 3 epiodes between "Not Without My Nanny" and "The Engagement"). They were so wrong for each other, but it worked.

Even though Fran's voice was a tad grating, I think this show was a fairly good comedy... nothing out of the ballpark, but it had many of the funny moments. I think in the end, they rushed it all, probably cause they knew it was coming to an end... its noticable when they shift the show around the schedule so many times.

Oh, and Niles was great.
AimsRos
I loved the Fran/Max relationship as well. I just saw the wedding episode, and I saw something I had never noticed before...Before the curtain opens to reveal Fran in her wedding dress to walk down the aisle, she poses in the same way Barbra Streisand poses in Funny Girl as the pregnant bride. I just thought it was kind of funny.

I found ANOTHER forum on TWOP to be addicted to!

I just love seeing what Fran's going to wear. And then I get to be jealous cuz I could never pull most of that stuff off!

I loved Fran's outfits! Some of them were just TOO outrageous, but it was always interesting to see what she'd wear. One of my favorites, when she was trying to convince the kid to play the piano again after the guy died in the nursing home, she had that skirt that looked like piano keys.

I actually have a jacket similar to the one she wore in the episode where she deals with her compulsive shopping. I hate the episode, but I have to watch to see my jacket on tv.

The really weird part is that my first exposure to Daniel Davis (Niles) was as a southern-accented millionaire on the daytime soap "Texas". The guy's apparently from Arkansas, not the UK, but he had that Niles character DOWN.

I found this out recently and have noticed that when a line is really funny and he's in danger of laughing, you can hear his southern 'twang' ever so slightly. But he did have the English snooty bulter DOWN! Wasn't there an episode where he was supposed to be 'immitating' a southern accent?

The actress who played Fran's mom was just spot. on. at all times, and I LOVE the trivia that the actress who played grandma Yedda was 1) Millie on the Dick van Dyke show, and 2) Lizzie McGuire's mom's mom, in real life

This lady got on my last nerve. How old was she really? I am assuming that she was dressed/made up to look old like Estelle Geddy in "Golden Girls'.
senor coconut
In 1993 she would have been 65.

Cool, a Nanny thread. I worked on the show the last two seasons as a PA. It was my first (real) job out of college, and a total blast. I had previous reservations about Fran and "the voice", but let me tell you, the woman is fucking awesome. Just a really cool, nice, lady. And gorgeous to boot. Not that we hung out or even conversed a whole lot, but still.

Oh, and Niles is, and forever will be, the shit.
Wicked Wonder
I. Love. This. Show! I was one of the first ones to think that Niles and CC should hook up (at least in my circle of friends). Did anyone else think that Brighton turned out hot, or at least okay looking?
Or maybe I'm just a freak.
Shiraz
Randomly enough I've watched two things in the past week with Nanny kid alum... Madeline Zyma (Gracie) was on 7th heaven, and I just spent a lazy afternoon watching quality tv...and switched between Bev Hills reunion on VH1, and Ice Angel on Fox Family, with Nichole Tom (Maggie). Surreal seeing them outside of the Nanny!!!
daniel82
...and given the fact that two of Nicholle Tom's siblings are now employed by the daytime soap "One Life to Live," I wonder if Nicholle would be the next to sign on?
I recall Fran visiting the set of "The Young and the Restless" (back when Heather Tom was on that show) and thinking it would have been funny if Fran had commented on how much "Victoria Newman" looked like Maggie.

Then again, I always thought Madeline Zima was the most talented of the three kids anyway.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Spalding Gray in this thread. He played Dr. Miller, Fran's psychiatrist. I know this is one of his lesser credits, but I thought he was amusing on The Nanny. It's very sad what happened to him.

On a different note, am I the only one annoyed that Lifetime keeps showing the Niles/C.C. relationship arc out of order? I e-mailed Lifetime about it after the last run, but it obviously had no effect since they're doing it again.
Jazper
Spalding Gray actually brings me here right now. I just learned of what happened and his outcome. Remember him fondly as Dr. Millah'. I thought he was good on the show, as well as in his other works. The whole thing is saddening.

Oh, so that was him. I knew he looked familiar. Don't know much of his other works, but he was funny as Dr. Miller. And it is very sad, especially since his last few years of his life were depressing.

ha, I noticed this now. And they aren't even showing the finale... and now with the 12 am sessions of The Nanny they start on the 3rd episode of season one.... and then at 12:30 they go into the 9th episode of the 2nd season...

Maybe its only me, but I don't see any sense in that. But I don't think Lifetime has ever showed any of their shows in their actual run.

But, alas, I should not complain. Lifetime does treat their syndicated shows well. I mean, they do show 8 different episodes of The Nanny everyday. Unlike TNT/TBS who completely took off Lois and Clark of their schedules.

But I'm not bitter.
Softcocoa77
Lifetime was running it in order for awhile over the summer and even into the fall...but then they stopped awhile back and have NEVER shown the last couple episodes of the last season. That just angers me. I hope maybe lifetime will take their emails seriously?

outoffashion I am bitter right with you over TBS taking off Lois and Clark...grrr. I watched that and Nanny reruns all summmer bcuz I have no life hehe.
outoffashion
I feel ya, Softcocoa77. I hope there are DVD releases for both The Nanny and Lois and Clark (and Silk Stalkings, if I may add) in the near future... and by that, I don't mean like 7.5 years. sigh.
NewsGirl2
Yesterday I saw the episode where Fran is dating some famous hockey player, and at one point in the episode there's a scene that she imagines and she's doing a Barbra Streisand impression. I was rolling on the floor with laughter. It was too funny.
Jazper
My friend is working on the crew of a new sitcom that involves FD. They just shot the pilot yesterday. It's called Shaking Up (if I remember correctly) and is produced in part by Jamie Kennedy. Apparently, it has something to do with an older woman/younger man set up. Or something. Thought maybe some Nanny fans might want to know. There's prob. more info out there in which I am too lazy to look for at this hour. Just a heads up, though.

Columbia TriStar is going to release the first season of The Nanny on August 10th. Since this hasn't been officially announced by Columbia TriStar the date may change, but that's where it's sitting on the schedule for now
outoffashion
yes, I got a nice little email about Nanny coming on DVD. Needless to say, I was very happy indeed...

woa, I just watched an episode of the Nanny earlier today (The one where Fran finds out her mom is having an affair) and noticed Sylvia was unusually thin! I know someone upthread mentioned the actress that played her had to bring a doctor's note because of all the eating her character did, but Sylvia's weight loss just looks so dramatic.
Was that episode filmed after an extended break that allowed her to loose it all or were there some transition episodes that I have not been catching? I remember watching an episode that had a sideplot about Sylvia's diet (the episode where she runs upstairs with the chocolate cake) but can't recall anything inbetween. Also did the actress just end up gaining all the weight back because she looks like the "normal" version of Sylvia when they reached the final episode.

I was really happy to find this forum! I've been a huge fan of The Nanny since I was a kid and bawled and bawled when it left the air 5 years ago! My best friend Katie tapes the episodes off of Lifetime for me and I looooove sitting down to watch my nanny! My favourite episode of the ones I have seen has got to be the one where Lambchops comes to visit and she keeps hitting on Mr. Sheffeild. It had the best Fran quote ever, which was:
Lambchops (to Mr. Sheffeild): My room. Later.
Fran (aside to Mr. S): Better wear a rubber glove...
Makes me kill myself laughing every time. I also loved the episode where Fran goes to fill in for Maggie as a candy striper and Max comes in and she has to shave him for surgery!
Niles (watching Fran putting shaving cream on Max's... err... member): Bucking for a raise?
Love this show!
espie
"Nanny" buffs might be interested to know that it's currently being run in France, dubbed in French by people who sound nothing like the original cast, with the new title "La Nou-Nou de l'Enfer"... which I think might mean "The Nanny From Hell". (Please don't kill the messenger.)

It was really weird; it reminded me of my last trip to France in 1991 when I watched "Roseanne" dubbed in French and realized how much it took away from the show not to have Roseanne's distinctive (albeit somewhat annoying) voice to add to the character. Same thing with Fran Drescher; her voice is such a big part of the characterization, and when it's gone it makes everything else seem so watered-down.
daniel82
It must make all the jokes about her voice fall totally flat--and let's face it: they did make a lot of comments about it. You'd think, for the sake of the integrity of the comic material (shut up!!), they would just hire some French girl to do Fran with a squawky voice.
outoffashion
You know, the one and (possibly) only slight thing that annoyed me about the show is how quick Max and Fran got engaged. They only really went on one date (even though they have traveled to two foreign places alone) and they only start calling each other by their first name, and Max just got over that fear of commiting again finally said he loved Fran (without taking it back, of course) and he's ready to propose? I would've love to have seen one or two episodes with Fran and Max being a couple without being engaged. Maybe it's just me.
Tabbyclaw
Nope, not just you. But hey, it makes Niles happy, and that's what the show is all about, really. (It's all about Niles/CC, baby!)
MaryWebGirl
I have absolutely no clue what made me ponder this, but was "The Nanny" shown in the UK, and did they alter the theme song for it (fanny means something a bit different there)?

Bwah! I never thought of this!

I have a bunch of friends in the UK, I will ask them. Good question!

***********
Later:

Haven't heard from my UK friends yet but just spoke to a pal from Australia. "Fanny" means the same thing down there as it does in the UK. They DO get the show and they DON'T change the words! She said it was really funny to hear it the first few times!
daniel82
Well? Care to share? :-) Or do I need to find some Brit friends, too?

Topic: nearly died yesterday while watching the "Maggie wants to go the kibbutz" episode--lack of oxygen from laughing so hard at the late-1970's flashback. I can SO totally see Val with that frizzy perm and Fran with Bo Derek corn rows.
BewareThePhog
This raised my curiosity as well, daniel82, so I googled for slang terms. In the UK, it refers to what Monty Python would call "the naughty bits" for a lady.

I also agree with espie that it seems very odd that the French translation would make no attempt to use an over-the-top voice characterization for Fran - not only are there many direct jokes made about it, but the contrast between her accent and Maxwell's was part of the overall "flavor" of the show

Ah, yes, sorry. Forgot to clarify that. I finally heard back from friend in Ireland and she said it wasn't changed there, either, and she was on the floor the first several times she heard it.

I haven't watched on Lifetime in a couple months, as I've been very busy. Could someone tell me about where they are, timeline-wise? I would love to start watching again when they start over at the beginning.
outoffashion
bad news, according to tvshowsondvd.com, The Nanny was pulled from the schedule due to "marketing reasons"... who knows what that means. No new date is known.

I knew it was too good to be true. :(

well, I know at the midnight showings, I think the wedding episode is coming on Monday.

I think the mornings are in season 1, but they never stick to episode timeline, especially with season 1, they always skip around, going from season 1 to 2 to 3 back to 2 back to 3... you get the point. They only seem to follow original episode order is with season 4 and 5. And sometimes 6.

Lordy, I hope someone warns Fannie Flagg before she does a European book-signing tour. No telling what people will show up expecting to see.
MaryWebGirl
Thanks for clearing that up for me everyone! I'd be pretty shocked if a sitcom theme song went, "She was out on her pussy," so I can only imagine what that was like for everyone across the pond (and international date line)!

I think it's so funny that Ann Guilbert who played Yetta was Millie, Laura and Rob's neighbor, on the Dick Van Dyke show. Ann is one talented actress to pull of the Yetta role. What's funny is that I really only got into The Nanny in reruns on Lifetime. I also heard that they are possibly doing a reunion show to air on Lifetime.
sunny605

Me too - and now sometimes I can't get enough.

It was also funny to see "Yetta" as Evelyn, one of Morty and Helen Seinfeld's condo neighbors.
katisha66
Mr K66 and I were discussing The Nanny the other day and we both think this is one sitcom that didn't ever jump the shark, even though it could have. It actually ended up quite convincingly, although I am surprised they never tried to spin anything off featuring Niles and CC.
kariyaki
With the way they set Niles and CC up as married with a kid on the way, I was really surprised that they didn't do a spin-off. I totally would have watched it.
Jazper
Probably would have been more likely if the show wasn't canceled and later dragged through the mud by CBS. Probably would have been a good show, too.

I mentioned this in the "I Love the 90s" thread, but it might interest some to know that Ben Salisbury and Madeline Zima (and possibly Nicholle Tom) will be appearing on the aforementioned show. As well as The Nanny, itself.
Titian Sun
Oh jee, Hope I haven't missed the Nanny love train.

the good

It comes on from 6-7 in my area. Yippieee!!! Worthy replacements to Will & Grace & Home Improvement being shown, ad nauseum.
I love Mr Sheffield. I just love that grey patch in his hair. Distinctive & Sexy. I have my Pepe Le Pu fetish. Fran & those outfits. Yowza. This from a het (& horny) female.

Nile/CC ... the witty banter. Love them!!!!!

-----
the bad
Can't watch Roseanne from 6-7. Can't catch up with the episodes on Nick @ Nite.

They're showing the episodes out of order. I missed out on a few years but it's obvious.
--------------

the ugly

I saw the Candy Striper episode (ahh shaving cream/whip cream). I've only seen a few episodes, but Maggie-the oldest child, right?- looks absolutely anorexic. She is skin & bones. From her spindly legs up to her tell-tale anorexic hump. It's the hump that did it for me. Well it's not exactly a hump but she has no meat to smooth out the ridges and curvature of her back. However, she has that chubby face & double chin. definitely a genetic trait.

And the brighton kid was balding during adolescence.
valny
In the new TV Guide June 27- July 3, it says that there's going to be a reunion called The Nanny Reunion: A Nosh to Remember. It's going to be a "Lifetime special slated to air October 11." It was taped at Fran Drescher's "estate" and according to her, "we're gonna relax, schmooze and end with a delicious feast very much what it would be like if you came to my house on a Sunday afternoon". But they're going to have the usual clips and bloopers. Should be interesting to see everyone again.
WiseGal
One of my fave Niles/CC moments:

Niles warming up for a singing audition

Niles: Me, me, me, me, me, me, meee!
(doorbell rings)
CC: Who is gonna get that door?
Niles: You, you, you, you, you, you, youuuu!

Funny crap.
Lindsey C
I love the Nanny! I never got to see the finale during first run because of the way CBS scheduled it. I am so happy there's a thread for this show. I love it so freakin much! I tried to play the "cluck like a chicken" joke on my boyfriend thinking he never watched the show, but he had seen it and it didn't work too well. Though he does tease me constantly for watching the show. I'm a Southern girl who can do a mean "Oh Mistah Shefffffieild!"
Annlindgk
Re the reunion show: According to a posting from Benjamin Salisbury (Brighton) on his own website, Daniel Davis did not take part in the taping. It wasn't really specified whether it was because of his current Broadway committment or (as has been mentioned on other sites) he prefers to look forward, rather than back.

Who the hell wants to see a Nanny cast reunion without Niles, for Roman's sake??? It's like making a hot fudge sundae and leaving out the hot fudge!
ajra
Poo on that! IMO, The Nanny would have been unwatchable without Niles and CC.
cooldham
Just have to share...Maggie had a small part in The Princess Diaries as a reporter from "Teen Scene" or something like that. I was watching it on Disney (the shame, I know) and I was like, "HEY! It's Maggie!"
Now I wonder if it was instead a younger sister?
Fabrisse
No, definitely the girl who played Maggie. And she's filled out nicely. *g*
